Texas Executes 500th Prisoner Since 1976

Terrehaute_gurneyperryYesterday presented what some would view as a striking contradiction as Texas Governor proclaimed that Texas “values life” in pushing for a bill that would have imposed strict new regulations on abortion while the state marked its 500th execution with the death of Kimberly McCarthy. She is the 500th to die in Texas since the reinstatement of the death penalty in 1976.

McCarthy was a 52-year-old former occupational therapist who was convicted in 1997 of murdering her elderly neighbor, a retired professor, in a botched robbery.

Texas continues to lead the nation in executions though last year Texas executed more people than people sentenced to death for an eighth year in a row.

Here is the most striking statistic: just four states — Texas, Oklahoma, Mississippi and Arizona — accounted for three quarters of all U.S. executions in 2012.

  1. laserhaas,
    Did not know you were a registered user on DKos. Took poll and rec’d diary. Tip jar was timed out. I did click to ‘follow’ you. Thanx.

    As for spelling, what can I say. It was early and my serum coffee level was still low.

  2. Fret not dear fellow good faith citizens, for Governor “Parry” is going to be “Thrust” with his own words and claims; if there truly be a heaven & hell.

    He put Cameron Todd Willingham to death (a man whose children were killed by a house fire and a phony forensic scientist helped faked evidence to execute him) – all the whil KNOWING that Cameron was innocent.

    The story still works up my emotional angst to the highest levels and tests my sense of civility. For, on this one issue – I would personally welcome time in a room alone with Governor Perry.

    An “after the fact” (murder) investigation that would have slammed the Governor and Prosecution of Cameron Todd was quashed on the eve of its release.

    Here’s a link to my previous story – with details of the forensic frauds that helped convict innocents – so that careers could be made by executions.

    I love Oklahoma (having lived there more than once);
    but hate its “Righteous blood lust” – more than I despise the tornadoes!

  3. KUDOs Otteray – on the look up!

    BTW – you should also be spanked;
    I spent 4 minutes trying to locate “Mirriam” (even tried Wayback)

  4. “don’t even question how many innocents die due to wrongful conviction.”

    Has anyone used data from the Innocence Project or other source to estimate an error rate for death penalty cases?

    Does anyone want to hazard a guess regarding how many innocent out of 500 executions?

  5. Dont u idiot liberal absolute morons fully void of anything aproaching truth common sence or simple understanding of right and wrong get it.? The streets are full of sick people all over the country and when they murder people they should not burden society nor ever threaten anyone again. It is so simple but with the utter and complete breakdown of truth and honosty even to take responsibility at any level but having morally bankrupt idiots rail at Texas for getting rid of people that are their worst and trying to do their job and protect thir citizens it so bankrupt and completly empty and indefensable that the press or others working against such necessary measures should be put in prison for a reality check. If this country had and leadership(its hard when u have a collective leadership that are paid off prostitutes only worried about staying in office) and first thought whats best for the country and then whats best for the people and used the simple principle that RIGHT IS RIGHT AND WRONG we would not have the problems we have today. It is very simple but the old saying stands proven again. Money is the root of all evil and add power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutly. We need to stop this and clean house at the top maybe before civil war we all corps included stop paying any tax. That could get their attention.

  6. His opposition to abortion is because it is a woman’s body. It has nothing to do with life because he is just as willing to let women die who are facing a crisis pregnancy.

  7. The four states are those where the value system reflects a combination of macho and pseudo-Christianity. They are also States where corporations are supreme. So much is wrong with Texas, yet they have produced Willie Nelson and have Cities like Austin and San Antonio. I think the main Texas problem is that too many Texans believe in the hagiography of their history and not enough apply reason to their suppositions. Then again my home is in Florida, so who am I too Judge. Maybe it is about having Governors named Rick.

  8. “You think you’re pro-life? You want to prove the power of your conviction? Start picketing cemeteries.” – Bill Hicks

  9. I looked up “Rick Perry” and found a definition of the term according to Mirriam-Webster:

    hypocrite (hyp·o·crite)
    noun \ˈhi-pə-ˌkrit\
    Definition of HYPOCRITE
    1
    : a person who puts on a false appearance of virtue or religion
    2
    : a person who acts in contradiction to his or her stated beliefs or feelings

  10. Contradictions exist everywhere…. This is just more obvious …

  11. Only 500? I thought that Texas was averaging 500 executions a year? Come on Gov. Perry! You can do better than this! (Sarcasm).

    … Texas is a symbol of all that is wrong with the US except for WENDY DAVIS who is a true patriot and some one I would like to get to know more about!

  13. For Rick Perry and individuals like him who loudly proclaim their “pro life” beliefs, life begins at conception and ends with breath. All the praying to Jesus and claiming a belief in freedom and morality has one point and one point only the maintenance of power and control with a bit of mysoginy thrown in. Jesus has nothing whatsoever to do with it.

    As to their beliefs in truth and justice, murder is a horrible crime and it should be punished but the way in which Texas runs its criminal “justice” system I have no idea if “convicted” means that this defendant was guilty or not.

    Neither pro life nor pro freedom in many ways Texas is a symbol of all that is wrong with the US except for WENDY DAVIS who is a true patriot and some one I would like to get to know more about!

  14. This strain of “Christianity” is quite bizarre. They cheer state sponsored murder and don’t even question how many innocents die due to wrongful conviction. Just as they justify the killing of innocents in corporate sponsored wars, it’s just collateral damage. But damn that woman to Hell if she wants to abort a pregnancy due to rape, incest or to protect her own life.
