Many civil libertarians around the world have rallied to support Clare Daly, Irish Parliament member of the United Left Alliance representing Dublin, after she challenged the prime minister and the reception given to President Barack Obama who she called a war criminal. The video of the speech is below. Daly called Obama the “hypocrite of the century” for lecturing children on peace while expanding drone attacks and funding civil wars around the world. Many in the United States particularly took note of her attack on the type of cult of personality surrounding Obama that seems detached from his horrendous record on civil liberties, privacy, and international law.
Daly noted that it is not just the government but the media fueling this cult of personality — spending endless time on what the Obamas were ordering for lunch rather than discussing his authoritarian policies. She is the former Socialist Party Teachta Dála (TD) for the Dublin North constituency but resigned from the Socialist Party and joined the United Left Alliance TD.
Daly is being attacked as immature and radical in her comments.

Ms. Daly is a socialist that represents working class North Dublin. She would never be elected in the anti union tea party libertarian USA. Politicians that represent labour are generally respected in Europe.
She tells it like it is with regard to President Obama.
Standing by all these years and watching my country go to hell while dragging along the other “civilized” countries of the world along with them had me feeling like these guys here.
Go Clare, Go!!! How refreshing to hear any politician tell the truth about corruption and abuse of power. Too bad we must go overseas to hear it. Sadly, she is one in a million.

Wow, she really torn the minister a new hole, didn’t she? I agree with most of what she said, but I disagree about Syria. Nevertheless it is wonderful how she put her views powerfully and clearly up front. We get nothing like this in the US.
Of course, for all we know there might be Congresspersons who make such speeches. The media would never broadcast the speech. At most there would be a scandal over her use of words like ‘pimp’ and ‘prostitute’ when ‘children might be watching!!!’

What did she state that is not true? What did she state that was true? That is the criterion for judging her speech.
Her speech sounds strange to us because it is straight forward and she is angry about the actions she is describing.
Our news is heavily managed. We are seldom able to hear from people who did not shift their values about war crimes once Obama started committing them. Instead, we are treated over and over again to far right criticism which is quite easy for any thoughtful person to dismiss. That is what passes for “news” and “analysis” in the US–propaganda.
I can’t fault Clare Daly for saying things I’ve said myself. In fact, not only to I support what she said, I’m so impressed that she had the dea-charachtair é (good character) to say so in front of Parliament and the world that I’d like to mail her a big ol’ Irish/English/Blackfoot smooch. Then again, that might be considered “material aid to a terrorist” by Eric “I Just A Fascist Puppet” Holder.
