Saudi Court Sentences Blogger To Seven Years And 600 Lashes Under Sharia Law

badawiRaif Badawi, who started the ‘Free Saudi Liberals’ website to discuss the role of religion in Saudi Arabia, has been sentenced to a Saudi “court” to seven years in prison and 600 lashes for his engaging in free speech. It is the latest outrage from our closest Arab ally. Yet, we continue to treat Iran as part of the axis of evil while our allies deny basic rights and enforce draconian Medieval laws against dissidents and non-believers.

Badawi’s chief crime appears to be insulting the Royal family and of course conservative religious clerics. The judge also ordered the closing of his site.

By the way, this was treated as a light sentence. Badawi could have been executed after being accused of apostasy. That charge was dropped but that still left insulting Islam.

What was particularly notable is the country that cried foul the first. No it was not the United States. These are our own religious extremists so they are harmless. No, it was France, which called for the protection of “freedom of opinion and of expression.” That is a bit curious from the country that has criminalized the wearing of veils, forced Google to turn over people for prosecution for anti-Semitic commentary on the Internet, and tried to criminalize opposing views of history.

While the French do prosecute people for expressing their views on the Internet, they do not actually flog them. Vive la difference.

  1. I think everyone here is being a little bit too hard on the Sauds.
    Really!

The guy only got 7 years. His wounds will have healed in the meantime, so he’ll be good to go.

It could have been a lot worse for him. A *lot* worse.

What if they had abducted him, tortured him and banged him up on some island somewere – indefinitely – without trial.
What if they decided that it would be ok to release him, but still kept him in the same hell-hole.
And then force-fed him – indefinitely – if he went on hunger strike in protest.

If they had done that to him then I think that it would be fair to describe them as bunch of perverted uncivilized primitive savages.
    But they didn’t.

Relative to a facist state that would do what I describe above ( Yeah. I know. It’s purerly hypothical..but… ) ……
… the Sauds are quite civilized really.

  2. Arrete!

Laisser les Français seuls de vos déclarations incendiaires …. ils ont au moins fait la bonne chose!

Nous revenons maintenant à notre gâteau …

I hear they do something almost as cruel. They make people watch an endless loop of Jerry Lewis movies.

And on a more serious note, Saudi Arabia and its leaders suck.

“You know what the business community thinks of you? They think that a hundred years ago you were living in tents out here in the desert chopping each other’s heads off and that’s where you’ll be in another hundred years . . .” – Brian Woodman, Syriana

Personally, I agree with that, but in the interim Saudi Arabia should be annexed and subjugated for their role in 9/11. Their leadership should be in prison. Their theocratic despotic tyrannical government should be dismantled. Their assets seized as reparations.

    That would be justice.

And that will never happen so long as the fascist despotic tyrannical government of the United States is bought and paid for by Chevron and Exxon.

A pox upon all your houses.

  4. Why is there such an amoral disconnect among Saudi Arabia’s oligarchial class . and the poor ? Is there a middle class anymore in Saudi Arabia or was iit just a memory of reading classic tales of magic cxarpets and likeable peddllers trying to make a living? People with a Peace Corps “attitude”should be encouraged to look into the socio- cultural history of Saudi Arabia . Call me foollishly optimistic ; the xenophobes don’t want to know what the Peace Corps is for, anyway.

  5. Raif Badawi, who started the ‘Free Saudi Liberals’ website to discuss the role of religion in Saudi Arabia

    He certainly accomplished his task.

Most of the world now knows.

  6. How is it that Bush managed to be this tool of the Saudis yet, simultaneously, the greatest friend of Israel ever to be President of the U.S.?

Maybe the foolish attempts at simplistic, knee-jerk analysis are wrong-headed, naive & stupid. Oh, or maybe its all just part of some giant Jewish Conspiracy. I know this site has “thinkers” along those lines.

  7. George Bush hands hands with Saudi King, Elected ‘leaders’ are Saudi patsies and most Americans are too mesmerized by their Netflix choices to pay any attention to Saudi brutalities. Anyway, it’s more fun for the war state to focus on the supposed Iranian menace, since they have technological abilities which makes it easier to play the fear card. And after what Obama and Co. have done to whistleblowers and truth-tellers in the US, they certainly aren’t going to care what Saudi despots do to their free-speakers. Now if it was China who was jailing a free-speaker, then the feckless and spineless politicians and media would be all over it.

  8. Wonder if all the “anti-Israel” folks will be up in arms about this human rights violation? You know, probably not. Seems like those anti-Israel folks give the less-civilised Arabs a pass when it comes to those complex matters of governance.

  9. Bunch of despots.

This is the reason why people should have their websites served from countries that don’t care what political or cultural content is put on them. Then if the saudi gov’t demands the ISP take down the website, the ISP can 404 their request.

I feel for this man Raif Badawi to me those like him are kindred spirits. They have courage and resolve to say what is right. If only our gov’t would hold saudi arabia accountable. If only we would hold our gov’t accountable for that measure.

But I have a special blessing for the saudi royal family:

“Your royal highnesses: I don’t know a word in your language so please translate for me. Conjugate a sentence constituting the greatest insult your language can express in a letter to each of your fellow despots and emboss my signature to it. It will surely be my pleasure to convey such sincere adornation to that which you stand for within an enlightened world community. For it is you who are wicked who pray upon those outspoken or downtrodden who are the blessed. The poorest woman in saudi arabia who begs on the street to feed her child is more cherished and beloved by God than all of you royal charlatans combined. So spare us your preaching and medieval retrospections and do the world a favor, go away.”

  10. This is yet another Pirate Territory. It is not civilized enough to be categorized as a nation state. Do not go in there on land. If you fly over, please flush twice.

  11. SA has oil and lets us have military bases there.

muslims continue to live in the 12 century.
