Adelson: Nuke Iran

220px-Sheldon_Adelson_crop250px-Nuclear_fireballSheldon Adelson, American mogul, believes that President Obama is not only mollycoddling Iran but failing to use a key vehicle for diplomacy that has too long been ignored: nuclear weapons. Adelson called on Obama to nuke Iran last week. Not Tehran mind you. We would start with a nuclear explosion in the Iranian desert.

Adelson is the chairman and chief executive officer of the Las Vegas Sands Corporation. He also owns the Israeli daily newspaper Israel HaYom. He was the largest financial backer of Newt Gingrich in his campaign for president. He then donated tens of millions of dollars to defeated Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney. His newspaper, Israel HaYom is viewed as closely allied with Benjamin Netanyahu.

Adelson made his startling remarks at Yeshiva University after moderator Rabbi Shmuley Boteach asked whether the US should negotiate with Iran.

Adelson, the nuclear diplomat, barked “What are we going to negotiate about?” Instead, he suggested that we call up the Iranian president and say “watch this” before exploding a nuclear bomb in the Iranian desert: “Then you say, ‘See! The next one is in the middle of Tehran. So, we mean business. You want to be wiped out? Go ahead and take a tough position and continue with your nuclear development. You want to be peaceful? Just reverse it all, and we will guarantee you that you can have a nuclear power plant for electricity purposes, energy purposes.'” Of course, we would have to add some decontamination equipment and radiation exposure measures.

This proposal appears based on Adelson’s belief that either Iranians are not aware of what nuclear explosions look like or not aware that we would be insane enough to nuke their nation (and spread radioactive fallout into the atmosphere) just to make a point. Of course, we signed the Partial Test Ban Treaty in 1963, banning nuclear tests in the atmosphere, underwater and in space. Of course, this would not be a test but an insane demonstration of power.

Rabbi Boteach did not appear in any way shocked by the suggestion of nuking a nation as a diplomatic gesture: “So a tremendous demonstration of American strength? So that they would get the message?” Adelson responded “It’s the only thing they understand.” It is not clear why Iranians can possibly understand anything short of a nuclear explosion. Adelson insisted that Obama does not realize that this is all simply “a game of chicken, who’s going to blink first?” Or in this case, who will explode the first nuclear weapon to make a point.

Rabbi Boteach later insisted that the suggestion to nuke Iran should get people to think about the double standard applied to Israel. Some have argued that it is a double standard in standing silent to Israel’s possessing nuclear weapons while threatening to go to war over Iran’s possession. However, Boteach was referring to the view that the U.S. is far harder on Israel than Iran — despite billions in aid that we continue to give one of the wealthiest nations on Earth. Boteach added “I would hope that those who seem alarmed by Sheldon’s overstatement on the extent to which the United States should go to stop Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon will at least protest that much more loudly against its actual development.”

Most people are really not prompted to think more deeply about world stability but Edelson’s sanity. It also reflects an utter detachment from the implications of spreading radiation over parts of a major nation, if not over much of the Middle East.

  3. Thanks for the data on how Israel got its nukes, Personanongrata. Very interesting. & very dangerous for our planet too, especially with Dr Strangeglove at the helm. (Netanyahu)

  4. if rich=smart=producer, then why don’t the randians (randiates)? (randiophiles)? ever show up with the cute little multiple links on threads like this?

because if nothing else, adlesons’ got some bucks.

  5. Note to Mr Adelson: we don’t have to nuke Iran. The Israelis will do it themselves, and soon.

Dredd I have rarely seen such BS on this site.

You need to start reading your comments then.

Link to someone that knows what is going on if you want to know who sabotaged the NWFZ of the middle east nations.

Dito for the other Southern Baptist Religious History of Cheezusville you cited when you cited yourself as authority.

  8. Dredd I have rarely seen such BS on this site. First off there is NO LAW or treaty making the Mideast a NWFZ. Thus Israel has done nothing wrong to begin with. Iran and North Korea have BOTH violated their signed agreements and international law. Israel has NOT. Just because Israel and the US will not accede to the wishes of your allies Iran and North Korea does NOT make US or Israel violators of international laws or norms. Therefore they are NOT rogue at all. It is Iran and North Korea who ARE the rogues who violated the treaties.

Iran has refused to allow free inspection of its facilities and is refusing any measures to ensure their compliance with their legal obligations. Then the silly idea that Israel was the victim of an attack in 1967 is also bizarre. It was Israel which started that war, and they are quite frank about the fact that they were the ones who started shooting. It was the disunity of the Arabs which screwed them and their poorly planned military ops which allowed Israel to take them on one at a time. The fact is that the Israelis having nukes kills off the idea that it is poor little Israel against the Arabs since Israel is a nuclear superpower in the area. As long as they have nukes, they are in NO danger at all that they can be attacked and wiped off the map. Thus the fact of a nuclear Israel, works against Israeli supporters in the US and the world since they have NO danger to their existence with such weapons at hand. In fact, even in conventional fighting with Syria and Lebanon, having nukes ensures that Israel will not be defeated. The worst that could happen for Israel would be that any opposing force would have to stop before hitting vital Israeli territory, otherwise, that force would be nuked.

They obtained their nuclear technology on their own and developed it without outside aid.

That statement is pure unmitigated hokum.

When Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser nationalized the Suez Canal, France proposed Israel attack Egypt and invade the Sinai as a pretext for France and Britain to invade Egypt posing as “peacekeepers” with the true intent of seizing the Suez Canal (see Suez Crisis). In exchange, France would provide the nuclear reactor as the basis for the Israeli nuclear weapons program. Shimon Peres, sensing the opportunity on the nuclear reactor, accepted. On September 17, 1956, Peres and Bergmann reached a tentative agreement in Paris for the CEA to sell Israel a small research reactor. This was reaffirmed by Peres at the Protocol of Sèvres conference in late October for the sale of a reactor to be built near Dimona and for a supply of uranium fuel.[32][20]

Top secret British documents[46][47] obtained by BBC Newsnight show that Britain made hundreds of secret shipments of restricted materials to Israel in the 1950s and 1960s. These included specialist chemicals for reprocessing and samples of fissile material—uranium-235 in 1959, and plutonium in 1966, as well as highly enriched lithium-6, which is used to boost fission bombs and fuel hydrogen bombs.[48] The investigation also showed that Britain shipped 20 tons of heavy water directly to Israel in 1959 and 1960 to start up the Dimona reactor.[49]

The CIA believed that Israel’s first bombs may have been made with highly enriched uranium stolen in the mid-1960s from the U.S. Navy nuclear fuel plant operated by the Nuclear Materials and Equipment Corporation, where sloppy material accounting would have masked the theft.[64][65]

    1. Sorry Persona, I should have said they did not get any ILLEGAL outside help. The NPT was only signed in 1968 well AFTER the time that you show the Israelis got help from the West. The FACT still remains, that the Israelis in this matter have done nothing wrong or violated any treaty or legal obligation.

  10. “It’s the only thing they can understand” So, to Adelson’s understanding, Iranians are mindless savages, somehow capable of producing a nuclear weapon. Rabbi Boteach could have easily put the matter to rest: While Mr. Adelson may, in fact, be utterly insane, his money, on the other hand, is quite well.

Dredd … I can sympathize with Israel needing such weapons since they are much smaller and live under a more immediate threat of extinction by conventional weapons than any other country in that region. Having nukes is the ultimate assurance of being able to survive as a nation for those is such a position.
    =======================
Oh yeah, the 1967 war proved that.

Israel dusted multiplier nations that mounted a surprise invasion on them, attacking them from all sides.

Israel disposed of them before the ink on the newspapers fully dried.

The only thing that saved those nations was them running to the U.N. to make Israel stop its counter attack that would have had Israeli tanks in downtown capitols of Egypt and Syria before the diplomats could fly to New York to plead for help.

Take some community college history courses before you hang out on blogs that have literate people participating who can spot Southern Baptist dogma faster than you can say Armageddon.
