Burger Joint: Seattle Restaurant Advertises Easter Promotion Showing Jesus Smoking Marijuana

Submitted by Darren Smith, Weekend Contributor

LunchBox Laboratory AdRestaurant chain Lunchbox Laboratory caused a bit of a stir when it presented its annual 4/20 sale offering a thirteen dollar Burger of the Gods in a “Buy one get one free” special. 4/20 is celebrated in the cannabis subculture as a national holiday of sorts and the numbers refer to California Senate Bill 420 which authorized medical marijuana in that state. Events during this day are celebrated in many areas of the United States.

For the year 2014, April 20th coincides with Easter. In a melding of the two holidays Lunchbox Laboratory sought a new way to generate business.

The restaurant e-Mailed the advertisement to 13,000 subscribers with the add featuring a burger toting, joint toking Jesus who laments: “When I Get Back, All I Want is the Burger of the Gods.”

“I wanted you to look at Jesus smoking a blunt, eating a hamburger and say, ‘Hey, I’m going to tell my friend,’” restaurant owner John Schmidt told Q13FOX.com in Seattle. “The chatter is much more than I anticipated. I’m simply trying to sell burgers.”

Schmidt argues he is a “family man” and practicing Christian who was just looking for a way to help his small business pay its bills.

“I’m not your moral compass,” he told Q13FOX.com. “We’re just trying to sell sandwiches. If you’re looking to me for moral direction, you’re probably misguided.”

The resulting free advertising was bolstered by Seattle’s KIRO Radio talk show host Dori Monson who declared “He will never go back to Lunchbox Laboratory after the pot smoking Jesus ad.” He added the following additional insight to the debate:

What this shows is not just a contempt for Christians and Christianity – and they’re free to do that, they’re a private business in a free society. They can have contempt for Christians and Christianity if they want. But to me what this shows more than anything is something that I talk about all the time, and that is this phony, hipster culture in Seattle, because there is nothing particularly edgy about attacking the center point and the center day of Christianity, there’s nothing edgy about that.

I don’t think it’s funny to show Jesus smoking a joint. I don’t think it’s cool. I don’t think it’s hip. It certainly isn’t edgy.

Some people are going to say hey you’re giving them exactly what they’re hoping for, you’re giving them free publicity. But I’ll tell you this is a place I’ve patronized in the past and I will never ever go back to Lunchbox Laboratory.

Again, free speech, I’m all for it, I’m not saying they shouldn’t be allowed to do this. If they don’t care about alienating whatever percentage of their customer base who are Christians, if they don’t care about that, go ahead and do it. But I will tell you it’s a place I’ve gone to that I will never ever go back to again.

It seems certain that Lunchbox Laboratory has lost a very important and valuable customer in Dori Monson. But, thanks to him his entire audience knows of a burger joint they might not have considered before. As for the flight of Christian customers Dori prophesized, one could wonder how many of the 13,000 fans will be deterred. Or, will they in thanks offer Bong Hits For Jesus?

  1. Darren,

420 has been around since the early 1970s, way before the medical marijuana bill was introduced. So the bill honored the subculture, not the other way around.

Q: OK, isn’t 420 the number of a bill in the U.S. Congress to legalize weed?

A: Hah! Interesting but wrong. In 2003, California Senate Bill 420 (SB 420), also known as the Medical Marijuana Program Act, established guidelines for Proposition 215, such as how many plants and how much processed cannabis a medical marijuana patient is allowed to have. Oddly, the specific legislator, clerk or aide who apparently numbered the bill in a nod to the 420 tradition has never been identified.

  2. “…It’s pretty clear that progressives dislike Christianity…” Well, I think Pope Francis considers himself to be a progressive.

  3. “…It’s pretty clear that progressives dislike Christianity…”

The paranoia and self-righteous victimhood of many posts here is hilarious. According some here, atheists hate Christians and only Christians, progressives hate (or dislike) Christians, whine, whine, whine.

First of all, many progressives ARE Christians. They’re the Christians who follow Christ’s messages of helping the poor, the sick, the elderly; who abhor capital punishment; who believe in responsible stewardship of our physical world and environment and who believe wealth is not the ultimate pursuit in life. Atheists, by definition, reject the concept of deity regardless whether it’s promulgated by Christians, Jews, Muslims, Hindu or Scientologists. Christians simply aren’t that special or different from any others in the atheists’ view. In short, get over yourselves

  4. That advert is weird. Maybe a little funny. It’s not an illustration of the “war on Christianity though”. At worse, it’s just bad manners. It’s free speech and it’s really none of my business. It’s pretty clear that progressives dislike Christianity. This article is proof enough really. It goes right along with the notion of “opium of he masses” and it competes with their doctrine of BIG government.

Carefully placed vocabulary: Free speech from Christianity=meddling. Free speech from a business making fun of Christianity=entertaining.

This article is dull and worthless. The.ad doesn’t illustrate the war on is Christianity, it’s become a tool to write an unnecessary article and to create a little whining. All it does is illustrate an underlying disdain for any competing forces of the socialist agenda. So it has it’s uses COMRADE!

  5. Washington (CNN) – A cybersecurity scare is forcing Obamacare enrollees who used the HealthCare.gov site to sign up for an insurance plan to now change their passwords.

The Obama administration says that although there is no immediate threat to users, all enrollees have had their password reset and now must create a new password.

…The site has already reset users’ accounts. Now, when they sign in, they will be prompted to create a new, unique password. The site includes a step-by-step process on how to do so and provides a hotline for any users who experience difficulty.

  6. leej, And I read the war on legit opiate patients just intensified. You have to see the doc every 2 or 3 months. You know leej it’s like so many things. Docs used to hand out pills like candy on Halloween. Now, there is an overreaction by them and now the government making medical decisions. The abusers of pain medication hurt the ones who need it, and the fakers and frauds cast aspersions on those really disabled. Our medical profession is so screwed up. I just read the HHS website is vulnerable to that Heartbleed computer virus. Everyone needs to change their passwords. However, it is important to wait until HHS has made the required fixes first. Non government websites have mostly all done that. HHS apparently released their screwup on Friday evening. That’s when the government always dumps bad news. Can’t anyone do anything right anymore,

    1. Havent heard about any recent changes but for some time now it changed so that some patients even have to go once a month so what is the result? Ups health care costs and makes those in pain whose pain is worse wih movement/travel have to endure more ain and need more meds., because of the bums. And the fact that the ‘war on drugs’ is an abysmal failure so instead we lament over this media hyped ‘epidemic’ of pain medication abuse and then take it out on patients rather then on how to prevent it by making safer meds
(Read article health.gov not vulnerable, so it seems but the suggestion to change passwords is a just to be sure suggestion.

  7. Those vicious Democrats are at it again!

Did you see the Pelosi/Miley nude bikini with tongue ad they forced on Breitbart?

  8. It is a problem for those legitimately disabled (just like the war on opoids hurts good docs and legit patients).
Thank you. I know you do and I know you have your own pain to deal with as well. And you are in my thoughts for that.
It’s a shame the doc didn’t take a picture when he saw the guy surfing,
It’s ironic, So many who cannot work long for the ability and day when they can get back into being productive yet others think being disabled is a walk in the park – but only so for the fakers. ):

  9. leej, What my 30 years plus of seeing people lie and cheat over disability claims did was make me MORE sympathetic for folks like you. I have followed your website and as I’ve told you, I pray for you. When you see the fraud I have seen it disgusts people. It disgusts work comp judges and juries. I knew you would be honest in saying it is a real problem. The black hole of fraud is California. I don’t work out there but I hear horror stories when I’m out there in the winter. I saw a doctor out there in Feb. In casual conversation he learned what I did. He ranted about being sued and he had seen the plaintiff surfing. The plaintiff testified in a deposition that his life was ruined by this malpractice, that surfing was his life, and he could no longer surf. His attorney and insurance company would not hire a PI. The veins in this docs neck bulged as told me about it. The case settled, as most do.

The Unabomber was an atheist who thought greed and technology, fueled by government, religion, capitalism, etc. was destroying our earth. You are correct. technology was his main obsession.
The devil was once a christian, but still is not an atheist (the worst).

    But only once:

And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven. And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

(Rev. 12:7). War in heaven Nick.

Have you figured out how that could happen Once upon A time In the west?

C’ mon Nick … show us some leather spirituality my bro.

pete, I think any reasonable person can believe there are many people who hate Christianity and believe it to be the root of all evil. Many feel that about Muslims, Jews, Atheists, etc. I contend only an unreasonable person would not believe that hate exists. Hell, we see it on a daily basis. You just personalized it and certainly you know I was not speaking of you! I’m not certain what our difference is here?
Nick, just so you can save some bucks when the christianoids come to hire you to find the root of all evil, here is a clue: evil is the root of all evil.

    Send me a stipend.

leej, The maker of the video is a Coptic Christian.
The cop haters here are not going to like it.

  16. Rick, When my sister was dying of leukemia that b@stard, Benny Hinn, took a lotta money from my dear mother, and she didn’t have much.

  18. This burger joint has the wrong business model.
Want to increase revenue? Do it Benny Hinn’s way.
$200 Million/year isn’t chump change. It’s something you can bank on.

  19. Nick Spinelli, Sorry. I thought we all understood that the conversation concerned the United States. I guess I must be more careful in the future.

So to be clear to those who read my comment and thought it was ignoring the laws and policies of China, the USSR (which no longer exists), Cambodia, or North Korea, my comment applied only to the United States. Further, I do not know enough about the Unabomber to understand how he applies in this post. I thought his deal was technology.

But, I must concede my defeat at the hands of Mr. Spinelli. He is obviously a brilliant thinker. Kudos, Mr. Spinelli.
