Italian Nurse Accused Of Killing As Many As 38 Patients

v3-TwitterDanielap copyOne of the stories making the news here in Italy is the arrest of Daniela Poggiali, 42, a nurse who is accused of killing at least 38 of her patients because she found them or their relatives to be annoying. She was initially charged in the death of an elderly patient and now police believe that she is a serial killer.

The case of Rosa Calderoni draw attention of the authorities because she been admitted for a routine illness and when she died there were high levels of potassium in her bloodstream. At least 10 other deaths are now being listed as “very suspicious”.

Prosecutor Rossella Materia called her a sadist who “who draws pleasure in provoking the death of the patients in her care.” One picture on her phone reportedly shows her giving a thumbs up next to when of her patients who had died seconds before. The public statements are an interesting dimension since Italy prosecutes people for criminal libel, as in the abusive case against the parents of Amanda Knox that we discussed earlier. While comments against the police can bring a charge, it clearly does not apply when prosecutors make such comments against individuals.

Even a colleague described her as a “cold person who was always eager to work.” This included the allegation from a co-worker that Poggiali would give patients strong laxatives at the end of her shift to make work more difficult for the nurses taking over.

Poggiali told police that she is innocent and the victim of a conspiracy by her enemies.

The case could prove very difficult given the length of time that has passed.

  1. Mespo, Karen has been known to grossly misrepresent what others have said, so it’s no surprise she twisted your words.

  2. Karen S:

For the record, I never asked conservatives to leave the planet. First, it wouldn’t happen and I do like the rest of the galaxy. (the latter is a joke). Second, the “reptilian mind” refers to stage of normal human brain development and structure coined by neuroscientist Paul MacLean in the 60s. It involves the impulses of aggression and dominance so evident in conservative politics. See Atwater, Lee. It’s not a pejorative.

That’s what I mean by the level of discourse. Most people knew this already without my lecture here.

  3. “I suspect the greatest problem with this, or any other future outbreak, will be the refusal of people to self-quarantine.”

    @ Karen

This is nothing new. The desire of people to flee from the disease or the refusal to think that they too should be subject to restriction (I’m so special and need my designer soup) has always been the case.

Back in the bad old days of the bubonic plague…..some towns or villages only survived by isolating themselves from the outsiders who were fleeing from the cities and carrying the plague. It is harsh. It is survival.

  4. WHY would JT entrust the keys to the kingdom to him? What the heck happened to this place?

  5. Amber Vinson, the 2nd infected nurse, says she got the go ahead from the CDC to fly! Will Obama fire Dr. Big Gulp and hire someone competent? Or is competence irrelevant w/ this imploding WH?

  6. You won’t get one. Blouise and I were on to this particular one from the beginning.

  7. I get called a “white knuckled drunk” by an abusive lunatic and Darren reacts by violating MY privacy. Despicable.

    1. Annie – he did not call you a white knuckled drunk. You really need to read the pretend insults that you are offended by.

    2. Annie wrote: “I get called a “white knuckled drunk” …”

Nobody has called you that. This has been pointed out to you. Please stop lying.

  8. SWM, the blatant abuse and bullying that female liberal commenters have been subjected to here on RIL turns my stomach. I am sickened by what this place has turned into, Darren owes me a huge apology. Guess MY anonymity means NOTHING to him. Are the civilty rules mere lip service when it comes to enforcing them when conservatives break them? It seems so. I am disturbed by Darren’s behavior, actually it shocks me.

    1. Annie – did I miss it. At some point while JT was gone did someone use your real name? I have seen your ‘real’ nom de plume exposed on a regular basis. We all knew it was you. As I said one time, you were as transparent as a tree.

  9. Spinelli, insanity is thinking you will always get away with what you have, one day karma will bite you…hard.

  10. “Darren violated my anonymity. Will JT recrify the situation? That is the question.”Annie, I doubt it. I wonder if there is a new rule that states if you pass the limit, you get outed. Maybe having over 15 posts and being a female liberal poster is the trigger. There have been males that have exceeded this number.

How do we know Annie is female? For all we know, Annie is an effeminate gay man, transexual, or even a 10 year old boy.

I am shocked about all the aliases Annie has used. Clearly Annie is not here for honest dialogue. It is one thing to allow a person to post anonymously like Benjamin Franklin did when he pretended to be a older woman named Silence Dogood because publisher bias kept him from getting his writings published. It is quite another thing to use numerous aliases in order to stir the pot and stir up trouble. Whoever this Annie fellow is, he / she / it needs mental health care in my opinion. The Baker Act would be deemed expedient in this case.

      1. SWM – sockpuppets do not have any protection as far as I am concerned. They are fair game.

And Annie (which is a nom de plume) is still anonymous. I did threaten to use her real name one time if she kept calling me Paulie, but that was found uncivil. 🙂

  11. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.

  12. Spinelli uses his real name and gets away with abusing other commenters DAILY, while people who use aliases to poke fun, are outed by those who have had the administrative keys handed to them for safe keeping. How low this blog has fallen. Do not claim that anyone’s anonymity is respected here when those in charge violate the rules they are entrusted with. What a poor administrator you have proven yourself to be. What a mistake to think you were worthy of the honor.

  13. Brilliant! Nick says:

“Enforced quarantine for all people who have contact.”

    Okay.

Now does that include all medical personnel? How are you going to make that work?
