Italian Nurse Accused Of Killing As Many As 38 Patients

v3-TwitterDanielap copyOne of the stories making the news here in Italy is the arrest of Daniela Poggiali, 42, a nurse who is accused of killing at least 38 of her patients because she found them or their relatives to be annoying. She was initially charged in the death of an elderly patient and now police believe that she is a serial killer.

The case of Rosa Calderoni draw attention of the authorities because she been admitted for a routine illness and when she died there were high levels of potassium in her bloodstream. At least 10 other deaths are now being listed as “very suspicious”.

Prosecutor Rossella Materia called her a sadist who “who draws pleasure in provoking the death of the patients in her care.” One picture on her phone reportedly shows her giving a thumbs up next to when of her patients who had died seconds before. The public statements are an interesting dimension since Italy prosecutes people for criminal libel, as in the abusive case against the parents of Amanda Knox that we discussed earlier. While comments against the police can bring a charge, it clearly does not apply when prosecutors make such comments against individuals.

Even a colleague described her as a “cold person who was always eager to work.” This included the allegation from a co-worker that Poggiali would give patients strong laxatives at the end of her shift to make work more difficult for the nurses taking over.

Poggiali told police that she is innocent and the victim of a conspiracy by her enemies.

The case could prove very difficult given the length of time that has passed.

  1. Olly, The hornets have been swarming and stinging all day. I just got back from a 12 mile walk and have that incredible calm of being physically tired. Read my 3 comments and compare and contrast to the other comments. I stand by all 3. I know you’re trying to assert yourself as an elder statesman. But, it’s currently above your pay grade. You need more experience here first. I see you in that role, but stripes must be earned. You know that. But, thanks for the comment.

  2. Karen I didn’t mock anyone’s family. Nice try at making it worse than it was. It was mild humor. I wasn’t abusive as are the majority of comments by your friends here. YOU seem to be obsessing over me and my sockpuppets, it seems to be escalating into something unhealthy and it doesn’t make you appear to be the decent, level headed person you seem to want to be seen as.

  3. Sorry, but once someone uses 19 aliases (at least) to target and mock another poster and his innocent family, no reasonable person can believe anything they say. I’m new to blogs, so this was my first encounter with a school of catfish. Live and learn.

LOL. I needed that laugh. Thank you.

Karen, you and I are so simpatico, it is kind of scary.

  4. Karen, wouldn’t it be interesting if those Swarthmore sockpuppets were to be Spinelli? That would be my guess. Who knows maybe they were YOU.

  5. Jack,
No, I did not use sockpuppets to harass. Whatever purpose I used them for, I DO NOT owe you any explanation whatsoever. It is I who is owed a huge apology by the bullies, defenders of bullies and by Darren for violating my anonymity which is clearly against the civility rules. YOU owe SWM an apology for you misogynistic comment earlier.

  6. Nick,
I made my comment to Darren earlier today with your proclivity to poke the hornet’s nest in mind. The blog would be better served to have your wit and experience contributing to the civil discourse and thus leave the blog management to those entrusted to it.

  7. So, Annie, you used 19 sock puppet aliases within a two day period to harass and interfere with this blog and you’re upset at being called out for it? Why? Did you think the limit should be 20?

Own it. Apologize for your actions.

    1. mespo – Annie has played a little loose with the truth so I would be careful taking her word about anything.

  8. I am not docmadison, I am no one but Annie. The only time I used aliases was two days ago on a lark. You people need to get a grip on your pitchforks and torches. It’s amusing how much you would like me to be embarrassed, sorry to dissapoinment, but I haven’t done anything that others here who are being protected by the anonymity rule have done. I’m still chuckling. I went back to using my handle of Annie as I wanted to engage in some serious discussion on several interesting topics JT posted.

  9. My wife and I are going to see Nick Offerman this weekend. He plays the hilarious Ron Swanson on Parks and Recreation. A great libertarian and meat eater. I hope he’s as funny as this demented nurse thread.

  10. Is there any evidence of anyone else ever using 19 (or more) sockpuppet aliases within a week period, or less, to harass others or just generally distract from the thread topic?

If Annie’s activity is not really unique, perhaps those claiming that she is being singled out unfairly can provide specific evidence to support her. If not, I’ll support Darren’s calling out as justified. (Unsupported empty claims of “like” activity prove nothing.)

Either way, Annie’s anonymity has not been violated. At best, her efforts have been subjected to a little sunlight. that disinfectant sure can burn.

  11. Can’t remember a time when I got personal and offended when discussing public/charter schools. Of course, some people may perceive such behavior when I disagree with them on issues, counter their arguments, and present additional information on the subject to support my posts/previous comments via links to informational articles and reports. Some people take umbrage and get offended when others disagree with them and may project that type of behavior onto others. So it goes.

    1. Elaine – you do take attacks on the public school system, public school teachers and teachers’ unions personally. We have gone around and around about it before. You carry water for the unions in their unwarranted attack on charter schools and defend the indefensible harm they have done to students.

  12. FYI, Trooperyork is another friend of Spinelli’s that no longer is allowed to comment on Althouse. A very abusive person. Are you getting a better picture of the ‘Spinelli Gang’ now? See the pattern of abuse?

  13. Wow, just wow. If you folks think that others here and everywhere haven’t used sock puppets you are extremely naive. I never used a sockpuppet before a few days ago and I was having fun with it. If you feel upset because you were deceived David, I suggest you need a reality check. And David, I could be extremely rude to you as you have been to me when I think of the things you have expressed here regrading women’s rights and gay people. As a religious person you certainly DO NOT embody the better aspects of a “believer”. Shame on you.

Pogo, you need to stop carrying Spinelli’s water. You can make all the allegations you want against me, but as a friend of Spinelli’s from Althouse, nothing more need be said. None of the Spinelli ‘gang’ comment on Althouse anymore, wonder why? I know we shouldn’t be dragging in arguments from other blogs, but Pogo did and now I’m put in the position, ONCE MORE of defending myself. There are OTHER blogs in which this group have created huge uproars and they are now deleted every time they comment at one of the blogs in question. WHY are Spinelli and Pogo being allowed to drag in arguments from other blogs anyway? I thought we were NOT. Allowed to fo so. Why is Darren not deleting this? I can just as easily bring up all the vicious stuff this group did to Ann Althouse, the many times they called he and her husband “drunks”, and worse, using vile sexist language toward Althouse. These new commenters, friends of Spinelli have engaged in this behavior on three different blogs now.

    1. Annie – you are the one who seems to be dragging Althouse into this. I know that your buddies from Gene’s came to your rescue yesterday, not sure why you needed it, but there they were. Arrived as a group. Almost as if someone had asked them to come. Had they? Or did they just suddenly intuit that you needed the help?

  14. I don’t understand why the other guest bloggers don’t support Darren, either. I’ve seen him rapidly retrieve comments that passionately disagreed with his blog post. He doesn’t flame, but typically contributes a calm, reasonable approach. And he stays above the fray. Some may disagree with his opinions, but I don’t think anyone can say he makes personal attacks or sweeping personal generalizations based on religious or political affiliation. Contrast with some of the other guest bloggers.

I find Elaine to be insightful, and I love that she writes poetry for children. But it is very difficult to discuss opposing points of view with her about the public education/charter school system, without her getting personal and offended.

Of all the guest bloggers, Darren is my favorite, both for his point of view, and for his refusal to make each and every topic personal or divisive.

  15. Actually, Karen, I think I have already told you, or some other character around here, who I am, I am the King of Romania.

    Unfortunately, panties still remained twisted.

  16. I’ll say it another way; I don’t care if I’m debating against one person using 150 “sockpuppets”, I’m going to argue with only those that maintain civility and stay on topic. I will fail from time to time but if I don’t feed the “others” then they will go away.

  17. doc,

All we mere tissue paper mortals wouldn’t exist but for his steely protection. From what I’ve read, he is PI to the stars, a professional witness, a food critic, a baseball coach, a world traveler, the toughest guy in any given room, a master teacher, married to the toughest and most wonderful woman in the world and likely Grand Poobah of the Shriners (Our Lady of Perpetual Motion Branch).

I wonder how he has time to blog let alone protect nationally recognized legal scholar Jonathan and whathisface.
