The Washington Jewish community has been rocked by allegations against leading Rabbi Barry Freundel of the Kesher Israel Congregation in Georgetown. Freundel is accused of using a secret camera to film Jewish woman engaged in the ritual bath known as a Mikva.
Freundel (shown above from a YouTube clip), is now criminally charged. He is viewed as one of the leading experts on Jewish law and ethics and “an intellectual giant” in the Jewish intellectual circles. Freundel heads the conversion committee of the Rabbinical Council of America and is vice president of the region’s Vaad, overseeing kosher dietary laws at Jewish institutions. He has a law degree and a doctorate and is affiliated with several area universities, including Georgetown University’s law school, the University of Maryland and Towson University, north of the Baltimore.
Ironically, the synagogue is part of Judaism’s modern Orthodox movement that has tried to accommodate the rise of women in leadership. His wife, Sharon Freundel is the leader of Kesher’s monthly women’s study and prayer group as well as the director of Hebrew and Judaic studies at the Jewish Primary Day School. She was in the courtroom with one of their three children for the arraignment.
His congregation includes U.S. Treasury Secretary Jack Lew and longtime U.S. Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman.
One alleged victim, Emma Shulevitz, 27, said that she was warned by Freundel not to move the digital clock setting on a sink — a curious concern but she said that Freundel was worried that it would be moved in any way. She said that Freundel said that Shulevitz should not hesitate to “take as many practice dunks as I needed.” However, a convert to Judaism, Shulevitz was not concerned until she read that congregants had accused Shulevitz of having a hidden camera in the clock.
The Mikva requires women to be naked and fully submerge under the water while reciting a blessing: “…asher kideshanu bemitzvotav vetzivanu al hatevilah, ….who has sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us on immersion.” Only one attending woman can be present who by Jewish law is charged with making sure that the woman is totally submerged.
Prosecutors say that a witness contacted police when Freundel was seen plugging in the clock in the shower area of the ritual bath. The witness said that Freundel said it was for ventilation. They identify the clock radio as the “Dream Machine” with a motion activated camera as well as a storage component. It is described as a “self-contained surveillance device.”
Freundel is charged with six counts of voyeurism and faces up to six years in prison. My guess is that we will see a superseding indictment with more charges to try to force a plea deal, which would seem likely. The greatest risk for his defense is that the prosecutors are still looking into whether some of the pictures showed girls. Assistant U.S. Attorney Sharon Marcus Kurn stressed that “He violated the laws up in the heavens and down.”
The synagogue posted the following statement:
This is a painful moment for Kesher Israel Congregation and the entire Jewish community. At this challenging time, we draw strength from our faith, our tradition, and our fellow congregants.
Upon receiving information regarding potentially inappropriate activity, the Board of Directors quickly alerted the appropriate officials.
Throughout the investigation, we cooperated fully with law enforcement and will continue to do so.
After today’s arrest of Rabbi Dr. Barry Freundel, the Board of Directors suspended him without pay. As always, Kesher Israel will remain open as a place of learning, prayer, and community, including throughout the remainder of the Sukkot holiday.
This is a very difficult time for all of us. We respectfully request that our community be granted privacy. Any further questions should be directed to the U.S. Attorney’s office.

It’s a free speech blog. I think JT would even allow point spread and over/under comments. Just no wagering. That would get Holder involved. I think Holder would like to bust JT.
Nick – Holder is a lame duck until after the election when a raft of people will be jumping ship. I think JT can hang on until then. 😉

http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2014/10/15/d-c-rabbi-charged-with-voyeurism-took-cross-country-trip-with-a-woman-other-than-his-wife.html“One of the most powerful Orthodox rabbis in America was arrested Tuesday for allegedly spying on nude women in his synagogue, but possibly sinful behavior by Barry Freundel may be more damaging.
Documents obtained by The Jewish Channel several months ago and reviewed The Daily Beast reveal that Freundel was booked on a cross-country trip with a woman who was not his wife this year, which is prohibited under Orthodox laws of yichud. It’s not clear when they met or what the exact nature of their relationship was.
Freundel’s work responsibilities until last year included setting standards for Orthodox conversion in the United States and overseeing thirteen rabbinical courts around the country, Until last year, Freundel served as the chairman of the Conversion Committee for the Rabbinical Council of America, the largest body of Orthodox rabbis in the United States. In his position, he oversaw 13 rabbinical courts and set standards for Orthodox conversion. In both positions, Freundel has been in a position to decide what activities make one eligible and ineligible to be an Orthodox Jew. Freundel is also rabbi of the prominent Kesher Israel synagogue in Washington. Not only is the congregation full of prominent Jews like Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew but it’s also one of America’s most modern, letting women read from the Torah and hold positions of leadership.”
DavidM,
I may have missed your answer to my question posed. Just in case you didn’t answer, here it is again: How did you get out of Mespos statement that he was promoting a homosexual agenda?
An answer would be greatly appreciated, if you have one.
Annie,
Why argue with folks that apparently have an agenda. They have not a concern what you think, but how to get you to react. Take DavidM for instance, he has yet to answer my question posed to him. How did he extrapolate a Homosexual Agenda out of what Mespo stated. He won’t because he can’t. It is that simple.
I have seen many speak of infringement on religious forums. They have the best tax breaks of any business going. But if you disagree with one you disagree with all of them. Apparently it is an agenda that they have. Perhaps they have been watching too many gangland shows.
This is a sad situation for the Jewish community; this rabbi has lost his credibility and trust of his people. We should all understand that temptation lurks in all humankind and it is up to us to reject those temptations for the love of our creator. No one is without sin and everyone has an opportunity to ask forgiveness and repent.
Gigi – so, do they bring is a sub while this guy is out or what?
maxcat, It must have been a bit melancholy to see former Nat, Michael Morse, hit a big homer for the Giants. I was happy for the guy, battling injuries all year. My Royals are the darlings of the nation. I may zip down to KC for a game, Got lots of friends there. I last saw WS games there in 1980. Went to Philly where a college roomie lives for games 1 and 2 and then 3 games in KC. That was the year George Brett hit .390. Jimmy Carter came to town campaigning and Brett appeared on stage w/ Carter @ a rally. Brett got a lotta shit. You don’t see athletes campaigning now. But, they used to. Stan the Man was on a campaign tour w/ JFK along w/ Angie Dickinson and James Michener. There’s an eclectic trio. You know Angie got a lot more “face time” w/ JFK.
Nick – I am happy to say I could care less who played yesterday and what happened to them. And Angie Dickenson was infamous for spreading her ‘favors’ around.
Nick –
“maxcat, It must have been a bit melancholy to see former Nat, Michael Morse, hit a big homer for the Giants. I was happy for the guy, battling injuries all year. My Royals are the darlings of the nation.”
Melancholy doesn’t even begin to sum up the emotions! Actually, I wasn’t too worked up about it, as the homer didn’t come against the Nats, and I have a strange habit of WANTING the team that has beaten “mine” to go on and win further on down the line, if for no other reason than to prove that the earlier win was no fluke. Yes, your Royals are the Cinderella story, and I know I’ll be pulling for them starting Tuesday. Talk about a come out of nowhere team, and I’m you realize that it’s both wild card teams playing? Someone mentioned the other day, and I’m not sure this is totally accurate, that there is only one player total on both WS teams who even played professionally in the 20th century, and that’s the Giant’s pitcher, Hudson. Feeling your bones creak, yet?
I do remember all sort of athletes campaigning in the past. I suppose their agents (alas, they all have one) now advise them against doing so in fear of alienating half their fan base. Instead, as in the case of George Allen, they wait for retirement and go into politics.

Well, certainly every Christian is not happier than every atheist or agnostic. That kind of goes without saying. It is just that as a group, religious people are happier than the non-religious. Interesting dilemma about Jesus’ return!
I, too, have found that odd cognitive dissonance about the Old vs. New testaments. Having been raised on the OT, I find that the “interpretation” of the tome by the supposed NTers leaves a lot lacking.
You guys are a trip. lol
Okay Paul, go ahead and ignore my debate while you pick at Annie. Fine over and out. Children that are molested whether or not there is a Holy Father watching over are unimportant I guess.

Interesting.. I find that as a questioning secular humanist, I have a very happy life. I find wonder in the vastness of the universe even when not convinced it was divinely created. I tend to find a fullness in this life, in the here and now, as I find the need to leave THIS world better and not worry myself about a mythic after/next life. Should I need “spiritual” nourishment, I visit our botanical garden, or go to the local pound and walk all of the dogs. I also love to look skyward and find stars and planets. In the Fall, several owls show up late at night and if I can’t sleep, I sit on my porch and listen to them. I work in the community, work in electoral politics, and take classes, always with my nose in a book. My mind, heart, and what some would call my “soul” are satisfied. Should I feel lacking if I don’t feel transcendent over a thousands year old tale, one that borrows from those that came before? Should I feel a lack, I’ll rediscover Buddhism. I wouldn’t want Squeeky to think I was anything other than a flaky old hippie. No one needs to fear my happiness.
And, hey….maxcat is back!
maxcat – first congrats on getting your name back. Not sure what went wrong to make that happen. 🙂 Probably some WP error that will be fixed tomorrow.
I think in the aggregate that religious people are more satisfied with their lives. I know that when I went from religious to non-religious it left a hole in my life, one that has never really been filed. Like you I feel fully satisfied, but maybe we could be more satisfied. 😉 I didn’t substitute secular humanism for my former religion.

You’ll find much here that you’ll find shocking, particularly how the Old Testament has been twisted around by the folks that claim to follow the New one.
= = =
Especially since Jesus said to forget the Old Laws…
Think of it this way:
Reading comprehension skills that depend upon someone else’s theories is a sign of zero ability to read and think for oneself. Just sayin’.
The question I only have is:
Upon Jesus’ return, will He seek the Temple to His Father or the alter to Himself?
I found this some time ago Max 1 and thought of it when you said that – The last reference is Revelation 21:1. Revelation 21-22 provides the crescendo to prophetic-apocalyptic biblical revelation. It is interesting that the imaging of eternity has humankind on a restored earth, not in God’s heavenly realm. This is certainly the eternal state and not a millennial scene. The sea is gone from Revelation 21 but not from other millennial images. Human history climaxes where it all began: on the earth.

We all have base emotions and learn to control them. I gave a speech on it earlier. I said that we need to be locked up if we can’t control ourselves around little children as they can’t defend themselves around adults. They do not have the experience. This is obvious and needs not explanation. If adults want to play with the each other in a narcissistic way – let them have at it. Fine, its not breaking any laws.

Paul – Coke has been out there forever. The drug of choice with the Boomers was LSD, and Pot and Mescaline and any Psylocibin. If you were in the War zone, you also got involved in Heroin to bring you down from this and Thorazine. Coke did not get popular until the 80s. You can say what you want, but most of us had dropped out of it by then and the nect generation had picked up and started “designing” the drugs.
If you want to argue about this, you picked a great arguement because I will not back down after what I saw being done to my compatriots that came back from Vietnam.
The United States has been in a constant State of War for God knows how long. So, I imagine you mean Declared War. Okay Mr Paul, since I know I’m right about the drugs, lets move on to the economy which I would be very interested in debating with you. Trouble Shot Thousands of accounts on my own because I could carry information in my head. And yes, I was proud of it. But moving on…..
Between 1968 and 1976 we had some special circumstances thanks to Nixon and Volcker Stagflation. Below I have gathered some of the statistics that have made these things possible in the time frame that I mentioned that I was a young and married adult with 2 small toddlers.
1968
USA
Congress repudiates redemption of all forms of “lawful money” in silver, thus turning Federal Reserve Notes into a fiat currency domestically for the first time.
The USA’s involvement in the Vietnam War reaches a peak. Dan Rather becomes the foreign correspondent for CBS News and his coverage of Vietnam helps make him one of the most recognizable figures in the national news media.
1970
US National debt $389,158,403,690.
1971
President Nixon repudiates redemption of Federal Reserve Notes (FRNs) in gold, thus turning FRNs into a fiat currency internationally for the first time.
1972
Luxembourg
The Bank of Credit and Commerce International was incorporated by Pakistani banker Agha Hasan Abedi. BCCI as it became to be know was initially capitalized by Sheik Zayed of Abu Ahabi the bank conducted all of its real business in London. It was reportedly a money launering operation for the hundreds of heroin laboratories in Pakistn’s North West Frontier as well as the central bank for the British and American arms flows to the Afghan mujahideen.
USA
The book “Limits to Growth” is published. It sold 12 million copies in 37 languages. The book was the result of a study commissioned by The Club of Rome, a think tank of scientists, economists, business people, international civil servants, and politicians from the five continents.
Five men are arrested for breaking into the DNC Headquarters, starting events that would later be known as the Watergate Scandal. Dan Rather covers the investigation as White House correspondent.
1973
USA
“It is very rare that you can be as unqualifiedly bullish as you can be now.” – Alan Greenspan in the New Your Times on January 7, 1973
The stock market crash of 1973 – 1974 begins.
The “Oil Crisis Recession” was sparked by quadrupling of oil prices by OPEC coupled with high government spending due to the Vietnam War, which leads to stagflation in the United States.
“Real wages” and standard of living peaks for the average American.
David Rockefeller asks Zbigniew Brzezinski and a few others, including from the Brookings Institution, Council on Foreign Relations and the Ford Foundation, to put together an organization of the top political, and business leaders from around the world. He calls this group the Trilateral Commission (TC). The first meeting of the group is held in Tokyo in October.
1974
Iran
Iranian oil production peaks. In August the Shah of Iran envisioned “a time when the world’s oil supply would run out, and declared: Petroleum is a noble material, much too valuable to burn…”
USA
Nixon resigns, allowing Gerald Ford to assume the presidency.
Things started to turn around then but idiot Carter had interest so High that I had to pay outlandish interest on my first house. This fighting over money and working and working just to make ends meet does make for insanity imo.
Your turn..
happypappies – because the area I lived in was ‘redllned’ because too many blacks lived there, when my wife and I bought our first house we made the down and assumed two notes carried by previous owners. So while others were paying horrible percentage rates created by Jimmy Carter, I was paying 4% on one and 5.5% on the other.
You have thrown a lot of stuff out there, none of which links together and I watch Conspiracy Files. You are sailing close to tinfoil hat territory.
I am not sure if I am reading too much into what you wrote, but it appears that at some point you went insane because of overwork?
Again you have thrown a bunch of stuff against the wall, but I don’t know what your point is and what you want to discuss.
Paul, my mind travels really fast when I get on something. I will slow down. Sorry. You are extraordinarily patient with me. But, we are getting somewhere. We sold that house but I had married another brute by then and we took the 10 thousand we made and put it on a 30 thousand dollar house. I lived in the same kind of neighborhoods. That lasted A short while and I made nothing of it. My point was…..Had I not the ability to raise out of the ashes, a third time because this is what I did and I just might as well tell you, in 1982 I raised out of the ashes into my 3rd relationship. It was not a good one but it was fruitful financially. I had more than I ever did then. All by reinventing myself with a very versatile Liberal Arts Degree.
Now with that in the backround and with your 2 houses being paid on in the Carter Years (I was Paying 294.00 a mo for 20,000.00 I owed)
This is my discussion. I was told by Guidance Counselors in School there was no future for us in Teaching which is what I wanted to do because of the economy, The Bond issues were not getting passed and we were in the middle of a solid recession. I threw against the wall what I did basically for the End of the Gold Standard the Beginning of fiat money and the Oil crisis of 1973 and the great recession in the 1970s, The Stagflation. You were there. And I started in that Job market. There weren’t even jobs for waitresses meaning you had to stand in line with 50 or so people.
Same deal with any person who wanted a factory job. They were laying off like crazy then. It was just hard then and my point was I don’t get the big deal about it being easy for all of the boomers because it wasn’t .
I know some of that crap was tin foil but it was tin foil I never saw before so I thought it was interesting and left it in because I took the usual tin foil out lololol. 🙂 I thought I would give you a good read since you are so erudite. 🙂
happypappies – well, the extra tin foil did confuse the issue if nothing else. 😉
My high school helped standardize tests so we took a lot of test while I was there. As a senior I went to the vice principal (guidance counselor) and asked him to put all those tests together and tell me what I should be. A week later he called me into his office to tell me I could be anything I wanted except a surgeon , because I was too clumsy. Well, that was a lot of help. 😉 I hadn’t wanted to be a surgeon to begin with, so it didn’t even take one opportunity off the table.
I did happen to see that there are some who think there is no gold in Fort Knox, that the soldiers are actually guarding alien technology that we are reverse engineering. The gold reserves have not been audited since the 1950s or something.
I did happen to see that there are some who think there is no gold in Fort Knox, that the soldiers are actually guarding alien technology that we are reverse engineering. The gold reserves have not been audited since the 1950s or something.
It doesn’t matter anyway because our economy is not on the Gold Standard any more. It’s all a giant circle kite by the Federal Reserve, the IMF and the /
Economic Hitmen they employ. I don’t care how tin foil that term sounds. It’s true. We send people out to take over small countries with the free trade agreements and with our fractional reserve banking they become hopelessly indebted to us. It is as bad as mercantilism. In fact, I would go so far as to call it Neo Mercantilism.
So. Call that debate no one.
That is what I went into, with no degree, Accounting, trouble shooting economics.
And it was what I had the least aptitude for. Kind of like shooting myself in the foot but that is where the jobs were in the Reagan years
Now, to get back to the Baby Boomers not having it sooooo great in job opportunities. Maybe it was partially because I was a woman. no# 1 no teaching job. I had the aptitude to do anything. I was an honors student and I excelled in science, history and the arts. I was intuitive in higher math. But you were not encouraged to be a Doctor, but a nurse and I was too arrogant to be a Nurse. I wanted to be a Vet and our Family Finances were prohibitive and as you know, there weren’t the gov. scholarships back then….. Also, perhaps, to be honest, part of my personal problem was my guiding force, my Mother, passed away suddenly in my early Sophomore Year so I worked 2 jobs and went to school to pay for it and just got the associates, But I still carried a 3,8. So, I have to admit, I probably would have had her at my back and gone on to a Presbyterian College and she would have pushed me into teaching anyway even though they said there were no jobs as I consider myself an exceptional teacher.
But, my point is I don’t think your criticism is fair. I think Reagan was the one who made for the looseness and promiscuity by repealing the Fairness Doctrine and allowing every type of filth in the world to be on tv in the name of the 1st amendment.
Give me a break. And the Fundies are the ones that scream the most for it.
Sooo. What do you think of that analogy? 🙂
Paul, now I feel better. lol And I know that Carter wasn’t President until 1976. But still. rant rant rant 🙂
@docmadison
I am not whining. I am just facing reality. The Boomers screwed up a lot of stuff, and it will not be repaired over night. To borrow an drug rehab phrase, Americans haven’t suffered enough yet. Sooo, stuff here will get a lot worse before it gets better.

That easy to figure out. Religious people are part of something greater than themselves. Their lives make sense. They take time out of the daily routine to contemplate their proper role in life. There is a sense that we are not the center of the universe, and therefore are free to just be humans and enjoy human things.
Meanwhile, the non-religious types have to re-invent the moral wheel each generation and without an afterlife to look forward to, their time is consumed by shallow creature comforts. In an effort to escape that particular trap, a lot of them turn to substitutes for religion seeking a transcendental experience thru sexual relations or some political outlet like extreme environmental movements, or adrenalin rushes like rock climbing.
