The Season of Our Discontent II: “Football Strong(Men)” Vs. Women

  1. True, Nick.
I am actually a little surprised how completely unable they are at discussing their assertions.

Sure, Mespo has argued before people much smarter than I am. But he seems unable to defend his post from my comments, doltish they may be.

I have worked around some serious geniuses myself, intellects of wondrous depth and breadth, yet they seemed quite capable of addressing questions and dissent of all kinds, with kindness, courtesy and clarity, even from those who are far beneath their station.

And I never ever heard them insult someone in Gaelic in lieu of response.

    Smug is the word, Nick.

  2. Pogo, Chuck comes over here when a weekend blogger is in trouble and adds some Scottish condescension to the discussion. Another sign things have gone south for a fellow weekend contributor. We have all the signs here. It is a weekend, and Chuck is a weekend contributor. Haven’t seen him in weeks.

  3. Pogo, The “sewer cleaner” comment is edifying on several levels, socioeconomic and elitist, among them. One of my great uncles was an immigrant and cleaned sewer. He worked for the city for almost 50 years. Saw the evolution of that cities sewer system and was so proud to work in one of the first water treatment plants in the state of Ct. I’ve known some very successful attorneys in my life. Few are smug. They don’t feel the need to look down on people, being secure in their position. The most smug are often the ham n’ eggers.

  4. Pogo,
    I believe I left a clue:
“There is an old Scottish proverb…..”

If I had used Irish Gaeilge, it would have read,
“Is dóigh le fear le srón mór bhfuil gach duine ag caint faoi.”

Bíodh gach duine lá go deas, toisc go bhfuil mé chun dul chun oibre.
    Cheers

  5. Pogo, Eye opening, isn’t it. But, we see this pathology elsewhere in our culture. But, you can search pretty long and hard to find a more smug crew. You can always tell you are winning when they go into hyper smug. Liberals have special immunity from being racists. Liberal pols can put on funky black accents. They can talk about a black man being “clean and well spoken” and become the Dem leader of the Senate. Going back to the female teacher sexually abusing the male student. As you said perfectly, “If it weren’t for double standards, liberals wouldn’t have any.”

Regarding “recruits.” Some people have the social skills to encourage smart and thoughtful people to come here. That is open to all people w/ the social skills to do so. JT wants more voices. Or, you can just make up many commenters. But, that’s not really healthy for the blog.

  6. Elaine:

You’re probably right about that post. Truth hurts. But if people really think a lawyer minds being berated for what he says they either don’t know lawyers or they think a lot of themselves. We get berated — and hold our own — with the best –other lawyers, appellate judges, physicians, CEOs … folks with great educations and real accomplishments and incredible life experiences. Amateurs, like we occasionally see around here, well, let’s just say they’re not worth the even minimal effort to read what they have to say. We have lawyer here in Richmond who says that your proximity to the truth varies in direct proportion to how angrily the witness responds to your non-inflammatory questions. I like that lawyer.

  7. Spoken like a true liberal.

    Shut up, he argued.

Literally, that’s his argument, stated quite smugly in fact, as if he need not defend his positions, but should only be lauded by agreement.

Don’t worry, mespo, I’ll not write on any of your posts anymore. I didn’t realize you wanted only praise, not discussion.

Ignore me, and I’ll ignore you.

  8. I’ve been experimenting with a great new Chrome app called “Shut Up.” It blocks comments from any website so you can load faster and concentrate on the actual post. I’m checking to see if they have one that will seek out and block comments from people you simply don’t enjoy and allowing them from people you like to hear from. If there is such an app, I’ll let everyone know. Facebook has something similar so you don’t have to read what a supposed “friend” posts. They never know and other people can see it if they would like to see it. Ain’t technology grand?

  9. Chuck, Annie, Elaine, bettykath:
Thanks, Chuck, for the proverb: “The man with a big nose thinks everyone talks of it.” Quite a good laugh.

Points up the curious situation when people try to respond to intelligent conversations in which they are not really a part because they conclude it must be about things that concern them.

  10. Sez Pogo. Now we could all be insulted or we can all just chuckle, like Mespo is probably doing.

  11. No, Annie, it doesn’t. No breath whoosh happened. None from your side addressed it. You ignored it.
La la la with fingers in your ears worked in kindergarten.

You and Mespo are racists by your own standards.
The post highlighted the behaviors of black men and only black men.
Why did he pick these examples, unless he is racist?
Where is the diversity of violence that surely exists.
I have to conclude that ‘sports violence’ is a liberal dog whistle for ‘black.’

But by all means, defend your position, Annie, I’m all ears.

  12. You’re getting no respect for your argument Pogo, because it’s not a legitimate argument, it’s a straw man who deserves no respect and gets blown away with a mere whoosh of the breath.

  13. And Annie chimes in with ‘recruits’ (again).
I’m waiting for respect for my argument about racism and their refusals to discuss, but get pettiness. And refusal to discuss.

They are getting back what they offer, and should expect nothing more.
I’ll leave them to their assumed moral high ground, to feel warm and comfortable in their white privilege.
