Iran: Human Rights Are Just A Western Lifestyle Choice

250px-flag_of_iransvgIran has denounced the latest report detailing its denial of the most fundamental human rights under its blood-soaked Sharia legal system. The report details the widespread executions of homosexuals and religious dissidents in the country in the name of Islam as well as the denial of basic free speech and association rights. The country executes people by stoning, hanging, and even crucifixion. Mohammad Javad Larijani, chief of human rights in Iran’s government, responded by calling such human rights as a Western invention and lifestyle choice. What is truly shocking is not that the troglodytes in Iran cling to their medieval system but that various countries stepped forward to praise or defend it, including Bahrain, Bangladesh, Belarus, Sudan, Syria, Vietnam, Venezuela, Yemen and Zimbabwe. Once again, the endorsement of Venezuela of the most abusive regime in the world shows the plunge of that country’s values in the Chavez and post-Chavez administrations. Notably, this report came shortly after the hanging of Reyhaneh Jabbari and shortly before the imprisonment of Ghoncheh Ghavami

The confrontation occurred during a three hour review in Geneva of the U.N. Human Rights Council which was reviewing each country’s human rights record. Obviously Iran was one of the most damning.

However, like some Muslim countries in the past, Larijani portrayed human rights as a Western conceit:
“This idea of, ‘the West and the rest, only the West has good things,’ this is wrong. . . . Please accept the idea that others have a good way of life. Western lifestyle isn’t only way of doing things.” He further denounced such objections as merely an attempt to “impose your lifestyle under the banner of human rights.”

The report detailed how 852 people were executed in the Islamic Republic over the last year, mostly for drug offenses, homosexuality and alleged crimes against sharia law. They apparently did not fit the Iranian “lifestyle.”

  1. What level of conservatism would please you, Paul? And in what realm, social or economy?
To me, a RINO is one I could vote for, as I was gonna vote for John McCain until he picked Sarah palin!
A Rino means, to me, someone who is a conservative at stock, but open -minded enough to entertain the thought he may be wrong, others may be right, and more importantly, dogma has no place in politics or society.

    1. Po – I cannot vote for McCain and have told his office that I do not support his running for re-election. McCain selected Palin because he needed cred with the conservatives. McCain has not been a conservative since Barry Goldwater retired.

  2. What party, the liberal party? My point is neither democrat not republican, it is liberal vs conservative. and it all facts, and only the facts. Under the guise of curbing voter id fraud, which is almost non-existent, the republicans are passing laws that prevent a great number of people (likely democrats, poor, and mostly black, brown and asian) from voting, all of it in the pursuit of a conservative moral agenda that is sure to corrupt what has been a very effective democracy.
But…I’ll quote Bill: “Today’s Democrats are owned by the same owners of the gop: the 1% crowd.”

ANd Nick: “I see the wackiness on both the left and right. And. I despise pandering”.
    Exactly!

    1. Po – I have been a registered Ind pendent for so long I cannot remember when I first changed my registration. Still, I call my Congressmen (they are all male) at least 3 or 4 times a year. Unlimited cell minutes are great, but I can call the local office if I have to. Usually I call the Washington office to annoy them. It takes a little time, but I feel I have done my part.
If the Republicans were more conservative I would be more comfortable voting for them, but most of them are centrist or RINOs. Our junior Senator is following the lead of our RINO senior Senator and every time I call his office I remind them he needs to grow a pair. We did not elect him to be Mini-Me.

  3. ns – kindly explain what you mean, by way of giving an example of an issue e.g.
income tax. as you see it, what’s the weakness on the left and on the right.

    Thanks, I’ll hold. Go ahead.

  4. po, I LMAO on Monday. I was in Huntsville, Alabama. There is a ballot measure making sharia law illegal in Alabama. I wonder if it will pass? Preachin’ to the choir for sure. I see the wackiness on both the left and right. And. I despise pandering. What a waste of money.

  5. po – you should have taken the opportunity to vote. Never miss a chance to vote.

  6. po,

agree about Jill Stein. I voted mostly Green today. Today’s Democrats are owned by the same owners of the gop: the 1% crowd.

  7. Paul C. Schulte
po – I am going to guess that if you are a citizen you voted a straight Democratic ticket today, right? It was the Republicans who passed the Civil Rights Act of 1965 not the Democrats. Democrats have done more to enslave blacks and the poor than anyone since the Ku Klux Klan

I am a citizen, Paul, but did not vote today.
I am an independent now, I vote the individual, not the party. I do not vote out of fear, only out of faith (in the candidate). last presidential elections, I voted for Jill Stein. Next one, still likely to vote third party. I may share the democrats’ social leanings but realize that they do not represent me, only their own self.
Our single best hope for a change in this country is in the rise of a strong third party, otherwise it is political ping pong as usual and we don’t get to play.

Last point, do you really think that the republicans that passed the Civil rights acts are these republicans? Really?!

    1. po – you might not have voted Democratic but you were sure talking the party line today. For someone who is supposedly independent, I do not see it.

  8. Nick Spinelli
po, You hit all the talking points. Superb job.

Thanks, Nick! The mentoring here has been effective! I am learning 🙂

  9. Paul — I am going to guess that for you, right-wing propaganda/talking points is about the zenith of what passes for deep thing and being a low-information
blowhard pretty much sums up your worldview.

    1. bill mcwilliams – I am what is is known as a very high information voter. So much I do not like anyone. I voted for Mickey Mouse in the last two Presidential elections.

  10. To add to Mespo’s point, the right is on the war path, subjugating all of our individual and democratic rights to vote for the sake of winning the moral war. They do not want the democrats to win for they would entrench the liberal agenda, which to the right means less caring for the poor and oppressed but more let’s all gay-marry and turn this country into a gay-loving, foreigner embracing, Muslim allowing land. That war drives them and they will cheat and subjugate all of our democratic values to ensure they do not lose it.
The specter of Jim crow has been fleshing out for the last few years, and whether new jim crow or old, the same methods of disenfranchising the minorities and those likely to vote democrat are in play and quite effective.
So I’ll reiterate that those who worry about shariah law crossing over should worry more about the local, domestic form of it we have, the fundamentalist right, for that one is making sure your daily life will no longer be the same.

    1. po – I am going to guess that if you are a citizen you voted a straight Democratic ticket today, right? It was the Republicans who passed the Civil Rights Act of 1965 not the Democrats. Democrats have done more to enslave blacks and the poor than anyone since the Ku Klux Klan.

    1. bill mcwilliams – haven’t gotten over that anger yet? It is probably going to be a long, angry night for you. Might want to go to bed early and just get the news about noon.

  11. Well we’ve got our own Party Of God right here in the USA. Here’s Republican National Committee Chair, Reince Priebus, on the topic along with his view of toleration:

Priebus: “I happen to believe that our principles are sound. I do believe, and I still will tell you that our party believes that marriage is between one man and one woman. Our party believes that life begins at conception. I think those are foundational issues that aren’t going anywhere but what I have said, which I don’t think should be controversy at all and I would think that Christians and pastors and everyone in between should agree that our principles have to be draped in the concepts of grace, love and respect and that’s not code language. That’s the New Testament so I don’t think there should be any problem with that thinking in our party.
If you’re looking at the evidence, what you will see is a party that embraces life, a party that embraces marriage and a chairman that understands that there’s only one sovereign God and that we ultimately aren’t dependent on what happens in politics. What ultimately matters in our lives is that we’re salt and light in the world and that we’re honoring God in the things that we do every day. I get that. I think our party gets that and there’s never been a movement away from that.

On the give and take about tolerating opposing viewpoints:

Brody: “I want to talk to you about this way forward for the GOP. When you use that word “intolerant” in what the RNC put out, Evangelicals start to grab the Excedrin bottles when they hear “tolerance” because they think “oh no the GOP is changing and the whole gay marriage situation.” Why don’t you address this and maybe put evangelicals at ease, or can you put them at ease at all here?”
Priebus: “Well, one hundred percent. I don’t know if I’ve used the word “tolerance.” I don’t really care for that word myself. I don’t have a problem with it. I just think it has another meaning politically that can go the other direction. I happen to believe that our principles are sound. I do believe, and I still will tell you that our party believes that marriage is between one man and one woman. Our party believes that life begins at conception. I think those are foundational issues that aren’t going anywhere but what I have said, which I don’t think should be controversial at all and I would think Christians and pastors and everyone in between should agree that our principles have to be draped in the concepts of grace, love and respect and that’s not code language, that’s the New Testament, so I don’t think there should be any problem with that thinking in our party. That’s all I’ve said. It’s not what you say, I think, it’s sometimes like our moms used to tell us, it’s how you say it; and I think that’s really the issue and quite frankly I think some of that has been overblown. I’m happy to address it but clearly myself and our party haven’t changed on those principles.”

We can see that view around here among the faithful all the time.

  12. pau –

Telling a lie causes anger. Telling the truth makes rightwingers furious!
Man up and own it, Paul Schulte

  13. Beldar here. We creatures from another planet have a bit different outlook upon the various cultures on planet Earth. You would too if you were wandering around Remulak looking at our creatures. I think of Earth as an ant farm in which the humans are the ants and they have different species but all walk the same. You are all very much judgmental creatures and all like to kill others, particularly if you can decree that the others are of a different stripe. You are not destined to grow out of this and probably it will all end in a nuclear war. Enjoy life while you can and stay out of the other ant territories.

  14. If a poll was taken of the 1%, I’d bet good money, the majority would support the adoption of Sharia law in the U.S. They’d also support having a dictatorship here, too.

    1. bill mcwilliams – you realize that your statement doesn’t make any sense and has nothing but emotion behind it.

  15. I’m on my way home from Alabama. They have a ballot measure banning Sharia law from being enacted. Really?? Travelling through Tennessee, Kentucky and Illinois, I have seen some NASTY political ads. Wed. will be much more sane watching TV. But, TV stations LOVE this. I watched the local Paducah news last night. It was all Grimes or McConnell ads. Grimes were negative, McConnell were positive. This is just a snapshot, because the Turtle is the king of negative ads. But, it shows who is losing in the polls.

    1. Nick – there has been a move to incorporate sharia law when deciding cases including Muslims. I think the ballot measures against it are just to stop it being used.

  16. And this is what happens under cultural diversity in the US. We are accepting of all diverse groups. Now what shall we do when these “diverse groups” that we have been so tolerant of want to kill the liberal constituency? I find this pathetic. “Oh, we have to accept the Muslims, oh only a small percent is bad.” Really do your research. 1.6 BILLION people are Muslim. Only 5-10% believe in Sharia Law. Well. that’s a lot of people that are TRULY misogynistic and homophobic. I’d say that the real war on women and gays is happening from the LEFT and the progressives. To allow this stuff as relative is UNFORGIVABLE. I live in the heart of Minneapolis. Let me tell you what the real threat is….LIBERAL FOOLS!
I can walk you where they are recruiting extremists in town. In the name of diversity and my congressman, that would politically incorrect. I’d like my neighbors next door (gay married couple) to keep their heads. Am I the only one seeing the dualism here? What they do over their is not important. We can’t even manage our own back yard.
