Just when I thought that I could not get more depressed about humanity, Fortune Magazine released its second annual list of the “extraordinary men and women.” The greatest female leader? Taylor Swift. Not German Chancellor Andrea Merkel. Taylor Swift. She was just two below Pope Francis.
Fortune Magazine selected those people who “are transforming business, government, philanthropy, and so much more.” The list was (1) Apple C.E.O. Tim Cook, (2) European Central Bank president Mario Draghi, (3) People’s Republic of China president Xi Jinping, (4) Pope Francis, and (5)India prime minister Narendra Modi. Then at 6 comes Taylor Swift according to Fortune.
Fortune based its ranking on the fact that Swift “the highest-paid woman in the music business.” After all what has Merkel done? She does not have a single POPS song to her credit.
Game Over,
I’m not quite sure what the point of your comment is. I happen to be a straight mother of four and grandmother of four, who thinks God made all manner of people who have a right to exist, same as you do. What does your story about lovesick lesbians have to do with anything? Sexual identity IS a result of a humans sexual orientation. The two aren’t seperable. Your comment smacks of anger that you must inhabit a world that isn’t made up of heterosexuals.

That’s three states now.
ALL THREE States have anti-discrimination laws on their books.
Why should a state employee from one of these states be forced to condone principles their State abores by entering into an act of commerce as a state employee? Sure, if they want to spend their own income supporting discrimination, I’m sure the state can’t touch them, unless it’s in a contract that they can’t engage in discriminatory practices… why should the state fund some other state’s bigotry?
happypappies,
I’ve linked to the article way above that has a great discussion about Ms. Swift and what she has done TO/FOR businesses and their
abuse of copyright law… This is why she’s #6 and not Merkel. Merkel hasn’t carved out a way for artists and businesses in America to scam the general public out of phrases and hip words. McDonalds ‘I’m Loving It’ could potentially pose a risk for anyone else seeking to use said phrase to advertise with… etc.I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Ms. Swift is carving the path for me someday, when I get the copyright on the word ‘the’.
You’ll all owe me…. mwahahahahaha!

Well there you have it, folks, About 7200 posts back there by “Imagin-annie” she referred to” being discriminated against because of sexual identity.” Not orientation, mind you, but identity. Maybe that is the problem. Maybe what we have here, is a failure to to just shut up and stop self -identifying.
I recall once in Santa Barbara during the first awkward “coming out’ of lesbians. We were having dinner in a landmark steak house. Everyone else had come to have a good steak. But these two had obviously (too obviously) come to profess their undying lesbian love for one another. First it was hand-holding accompanied by soulful, bovine eye-contact – the act of which spilled a tall glass of water, necessitating a change of table cover. That was followed by demonstrative kissing of “partner’s” fingers, which, sadly led to igniting the hair of the hovering suitor, so caught up in l’ amour of the moment, she failed to notice a tendril of her hair getting a little too close to the candle in the little hobnail pot in the center of the table….this required energetic whapping of smoldering hair and dunking in the new glass of water. We were all treated to the aroma of singed hair which somewhat overwhelmed the ambience of sizzling steaks.
I am more in tune with Queen Victoria, who was quoted as saying she did not care what people did as long as they did not do it in the street and frighten the horses.
Inga/Annie will probably say “Why do you delight in recalling a poor lesbian almost self-imolating while merely expressing affection?” I recall a lot of things. I recall a man whose dinner partner apparently thought he was yawning or about to sneeze when he actually was choking on something and in dire need of Heimlich maneuver, which, in the nick of time, was provided. I recall the night a waitress waltzed up to our table with a broiler half chicken that skidded off the plate into my husband’s lap. She didn’t miss a beat – said, “We’ll have that dry cleaned for you.” That’s it -three restaurant recollections; only one of them bigoted, mean-spirited and hurtful!
We will have true Equality the day San Francisco has a Straight Pride Parade and we have a Miss White America and a White Caucus in Congress.
Isn’t America a Scream where Taylor Swift can invent herself as the Girl next store and get a top dog award of the Universe for wearing white cotton briefs that others make fun of and being wholesome that way….
What a way to market herself.
I believe it because the TV and bright lights said so and I know that is true talent.
It’s great with all that money she has the smarts to pass out money to people in the audience and to poor people as well for the image in the future. Very smart.
Kinda like Joan Crawford.
Hollywood is so awesome so why am I never impressed?
I am bored.
But on the other hand, it is great that we can argue like this and not kill each other 😉
Ingannie,
“Anyone who thinks they could reason with you is delusional.”
Have patience, Inga. 🙂
@Pogo
Sadly, most Americans don’t even know enough about the other times to even say this time it’s different.

Happypappies,
exactly. And what do we become when “religion” dictates the measure of the law? Like I have said… Saudi Arabia elevates religion above an individuals Liberty.
Absolutely, Squeeky.
But of course, this time it’s different, right?
@SandiH
Well, for the time being it is the greatest place (or close) but so was Rome once, and Spain, and China, and Great Britain, and Egypt, and Greece, etc. etc. There seems to be a problem that once a nation really hits its stride, its subjects or citizens or rulers, start slacking off and enjoying all the prosperity. Then, the moral rot sinks in, and the self-discipline goes to heck, and the downward spiral continues. Which is why I think a good financial depression might work wonders to help us regain a sense of reality.
Re Toynbee:
Sadly, as wiki also notes:
FWIW, I have the one volume edition.

Governor Cuomo won’t let state employees go to Indiana on the state’s money. What progress we’ve made. Dumb is too kind a word.
Squeaky’s becoming an adult! She’s right, it’s hard! Solutions don’t come easy. We can govern ourselves. We ended slavery, we gave women the vote, we started child labor laws, we’ve won two gigantic wars, and some lesser ones, we are a generous nation. The first on the scene of disaster are US planes with people to help, equipment, food, water, doctors and medicine. I’m proud my country helps all over the world.
Whatever your issue is, this is the best place in the world to live!
First, this was a question about Taylor Swift that got way off target. But I’ve read some things about Taylor that I’m impressed by. She has gained celebrity without naked pictures. She manages her career without people telling her what to do. She could be a role model for young women to empower themselves. She makes decisions about her life after much deliberating. She is careful about where she is and how her actions might mess up little girls who are crazy for her. She’s kind to fans. She’s a lady. And she makes a phenomenal amount of money!
Now, Indiana. The purpose of this law is a protection of businesses not getting sued right and left. The activists, which are probably 10% of the gay people, are looking for places to raise hell. changing society does not happen overnight. Those that want to marry, should marry without bringing activism into it.
All the non smokers just wanted two-hour flights to be smoke free, that’s all they wanted. The gay people wanted to marry, that’s all they wanted, was to be married. We now have mission creep. A wedding should be joyful in every way. Get a photographer who shares your joy. Look at the accommodation we’ve made for Muslims, so they won’t be offended. Women walk our streets in garb that could have a machine gun under it, a la Paris. If a business has a moral issue, that is their right. Freedom of religion. You can be anything you choose. Choose to accommodate Christians. Animosity never helps to achieve a goal. It just makes people dig in deeper. Interracial marriage took a long time to be accepted, mostly, but they got there.
BTW, does anyone know why Gov. Malloy is being such an abusive Jackass on the subject of Indian’s Religious Freedom law? Is he gay or just in hock to the Gay mafia?
Many here at JT can’t present arguments – they just call names. Not that it matters.
That is an answer to Max-1
Not according to the Bill of Rights
If Businesses trump freedom of religion and who they can serve —- we are lost for sure. Why can’t you people see that? Did you think it was cool when the Black people were locked out and women did not have the vote also? This is DISCRIMINATION.
Are we a secular Nation… Or one where laws are passed to elevate a persons religion above that of the individual?
Oh Nick
Birds of a feather… Drown in their cesspool together.
I think that’s how that goes…
