Massachusetts Couple Announces That It Will Raise 5-Year-Old Biological Girl As A Boy In Controversial Transgender Case

Gender_differences_male_femaleWe have previously discussed the issues surrounding decisions to raise children according to their non-biological sex at a young age. Now, a Massachusetts couple has decided that their five-year-old daughter must be a boy and has decided to raise the child a such. I will readily admit that I am not an expert in this field, but as a parent of four I find such a decision to be highly troubling and premature. A five-year-old child seems far far too early to make such an extreme change. Indeed, this determination was made a year earlier.

The child is now called Jack Lemay rather than Mia Lemay. The change occurred after, at age four, the parents took the child to a family therapy team which concluded that the four-year-old was transgender.

The mother, Mimi, insisted that what she saw as a “psychological burden that I don’t think anyone should have to deal with, especially not my child.” She said that the child began early on saying that she liked boy things and saying that she was a boy. The father, Joe, said that “he was showing real signs of a lot of shame and self-hatred.” Now, as Jacob, they say that the child is thriving.

They are indeed the parents and must act according to their best judgment for their child. However, as a friend, I would have strongly discouraged such a change at such an early age.

What do you think?

You should know that gays hold gays accountable for fundraising with haterosexual Ted Cruz…

A message from Executive Director Tom Viola:

It is with regret that we have decided to cancel this year’s edition of the Broadway Bares Solo Strips fundraiser, which was scheduled for May 10 at the NYC club 42West. We cannot in good conscience hold an event at a venue whose owners have alienated our community, as reflected in an April 23 New York Times story and an April 24 follow-up post.

We do business with and accept fundraising support from a variety of people across a wide spectrum of political and religious affiliations. The rich diversity of our community makes what we do together so special. It is a rare instance where the actions of a donor negatively impacts us as an organization and potentially jeopardizes our relationship with others whose support is integral to our success. But when it does occur, in a way that’s blatantly against all we stand and work for, we can’t pretend it doesn’t come with consequences. Silence is not a neutral position. It is complicit.

  2. davidm,
Care to school this gay man about gay sex, again???
Come on davidm, speak from your experiences…

  3. You are expressing speculation that fits your favorite paradigm that people choose to be that way.
    = = =
    Fixed it!

    1. Max, I am just going with what the science indicates, not my favorite paradigm. If monozygotic twins were 100% concordant for homosexuality when one twin was a homosexual, I would be in the camp that homosexuals are born that way. The data shows a much lower concordance rate, so I accept the conclusion that genetics plays about as much a role in homosexuality as it does in alcoholism.

  4. Annie,
Thanks for adding the video’s above. It is important that people understand that children are people, too.

    1. “Self loathing Tammy Bruce dehumanizes trans children and calls them Cocker Spaniels…”

I watched the clip and Bruce did not call trans children cocker spaniels. Bruce used herself as an example and stated that as a child she thought of herself as a cocker spaniel. My understanding of Bruce’s point was that we know children go through many fascinations while growing up – with the implicit question of ‘how do we figure out which ones will be meaningful years later’?

It seems to me that when you start misrepresenting your opponent then you are showing us you do not have good arguments to support your position.

Trans gender children deserve our best understanding of the facts. If you cheat a little on the facts to support your favorite political position it is the children who loose.

You raised some interesting points. I have always wondered how come “bisexuals” got lumped in with gays and lesbians. And how could you lump them in, and then raise heck and get all indignant about how “We don’t have a choice in how we are!” Gee, it looks to me like if you are “bi-sexual”, you got nothing but choices. You can go any way you want.

Which leads me to my conclusions that the whole self-identifying aspect is a clue that something is screwy with all this crap. My goodness, 85% of self-identified lesbians have sex with men during the same time period they have sex with women. Sooo, are they perverted, fallen lesbians, or are they misidentified bisexuals???

I think these are the kind of questions we ought to be asking before granting special legal protections to this group.

  6. And Joan, were you aware that 20% of people who have a history of Gender Identity Disorder also have Body integrity identity disorder (BIID)?

That’s the disorder also called “amputee identity disorder), in which the person has the “desire to amputate one or more healthy limbs.”

    Curious, isn’t it?
So why *not* let them cut off an arm, losing it as one would lop off a penis?

  7. I see haterosexuals and I see positive role models…
… Who teaches the children well?

  8. Ok, so it didn’t work as well as I thought.
Here is a poor quality video. The story is as heart wrenching and wonderful as is the original above…

  9. Joan,

Isn’t there an overlap between body integrity identity disorder and gender dysphoria?

I’ve always had a problem with grouping transgenders with gays, lesbians and bisexuals because it seemed to lend credence to the theory that they all stood on equal footing psychologically. The transgender individual suffers from a psychological and/or medical affliction, i.e. being incapable of finding agreement between their minds and their bodies; whereas gay, lesbian and bisexual individuals do not. To me, grouping transgender individuals with gays, lesbians and bisexuals seems to perpetuate a “medicine according to Leviticus” paradigm — implying that homosexuality is something that can be “cured” or “treated medically and psychologically” like gender dysphoria.

Pogo does raise an important point regarding the recent trend of altering language and logic simply to please transgender individuals; almost as if there’s a strong bent towards solipsism. It seems that whenever there’s an incongruity between the world as it exists and the world as the transgender individual expects it, it is the world that must change and not his/her expectations. For example, a transgender individual will exclaim they are neither medically nor psychologically ill, and yet they will seek out the aid or psychologists and/or doctors while filling out insurance forms contradicting their earlier assertions regarding their well being.

  10. “if you can’t tell the difference between the delusion “I am fat” and the feeling “I am a girl”, I don’t have much more to add.

No, my argument is that *you* cannot tell the difference.
If you can, please enlighten me.

So, in GID (ender identity disorder) are there:
Genetically based systemic prenatal sex hormone differences that do not affect reproductive anatomy but alter neuroanatomy or connections? Where?
Sex hormone differences in the developing brain or respective CNS-limited hormone receptor defects? Which?
Abnormalities in the genes that interact with sex hormones to bring about sexual differentiation in the brain? Identify them.
Abnormalities of the neuroanatomic structures that underlie normative sex differences in gendered behavior?

    The literature is unclear.
    But you, apparently, know.
    So do tell.

  11. Karen, Ironically, David Brooks wrote a piece just today on the conditional love many kids get today from Tiger parents. I would tie it in w/ this in a macro issue. We have become an impatient culture. Pogo talks about how docs now feel obliged to prescribe some treatment or drug when really the correct path is to be patient and do nothing. Doing nothing in our current culture is equated w/ uncaring. These parents need patience. They may indeed need to take steps in the future. But, going back to that great baseball player Little League girl I coached. Any opposing player who didn’t know her just assumed she was a boy. She was 10/11 when I coached her. She got a LOTTA shit from opposing players. The kid just let it flow off her back. She was tough and just wanted to play. Make fun of her, she hit a double in the gap to shut you up. Her parents loved her. They supported her. They felt no compulsion to go through transgender steps. THEY WERE PATIENT!! As I said, she is a very pretty young woman now and there is NO DOUBT she is a woman. It would have been a travesty to have turned her into a boy. Again, don’t get Camille Paglia started on this subject. She lived it and thankfully had good parents like my player did, not Huey Helicopter parents.

  12. Isaac, I was just busting balls. I don’t do those vapid emoticons. A toxic commenter earlier today here called someone a “dummy” and then used a smiley face. Passive aggressive to the max. I apologize if you took offense. Are you enjoying the Stanley Cup playoffs? Who do you like? My son is a Blackhawks fan, my son-in-law a Wild fan. I just watch and enjoy.
