NAACP Official Faces Accusations That She Is White . . . From Her Mother

rachel3_t620-1.pngThere is another controversy over the veracity of representations of minority status in Washington. We previously discussed the controversy raised by the allegedly false claims of Senator Elizabeth Warren that she is a Native American. In this case, however, the accused is the head of a NAACP chapter and she is being accused of lying by her own mother. Worse yet, some have suggested that Rachel Dolezal, who is the head of the NAACP’s chapter in Spokane, planted hate mail at her office.

Dolezal has described her ethnicity as white, black, and American Indian in past papers and applications. However, her mother, Ruthanne, said that she is Czech, Swedish, and German, along with some “faint traces” of Native American heritage.

That has led to angry responses from different groups that she represented herself as a minority when she was selected for different positions. Dolezal has called the controversy a “multi-layered issue” and insisted “That question is not as easy as it seems. There’s a lot of complexities … and I don’t know that everyone would understand that.” She then added “We’re all from the African continent.” Many have interpreted that statement as a claim that, since mankind itself has been traced to Africa, everyone is an African to some degree. The definition is not sufficient for various groups. It raises, as did the Warren controversy, the basis for claiming minority status — a status that can give an edge in applications or hirings.

In addition, critics have raised suspicious racially motivated incidents reported by Dolezal while she was in Coeur d’Alene, including the discovery of a swastika on the Human Rights Education Institute’s door. Likewise, Spokane police records for February and March of this year showed that a hate mail package Dolezal reported receiving at the NAACP’s post office box did not bear a date stamp or barcode. Dolezal denies responsibility for those incidents.

The question is how to handle such cases in not only definition how to prove or what constitutes minority status or how to respond to allegedly false claims. If one receives payment for holding a position secured by assurance of minority status, can it be an actionable from of fraud or misrepresentation for the purposes of criminal or civil liability?

  1. So, the lying chameleon has resigned. Big whoop. Who cares? What people should care about is whether or not this disgraceful being obtained scholarship or grant money under the false pretense of being black. That’s important. What people should care about is whether or not she claimed to be a racial minority, on her application to Howard University, and displaced another well-qualified and deserving student of both financial assistance and a place at an institution of higher learning. That’s important. What people should care about is whether or not she filed false police reports about death threats, which she allegedly received in her post office box. The items, in question, from what I’ve read, had no bar codes on them, indicating that they were never actually sent through the postal system. It is purported that only a person, with a key to her PO box, could have deposited the objects. Well, I notice no shortage of multiple cameras, poised at various angles, in my local post office. Where are the post office tapes to solve this mystery? Anyone even asking to see them? Her decision to bow out of the NAACP position should not serve as a get-out-of-jail card for her. She has a lot of answering to do. Hope someone asks the questions.

    1. bam bam – it seems she sued Howard University for discriminating against her for being white.

  2. Squeek, LOL! Golden Corral would be appropriate as that is a white trash favorite, and a nightmare for our Food Sheriff. This wannabe’s adopted black brother said her act was like putting on black face. I love watching liberals have strokes over this.

I guess that Poor Rachel will have to go drown her sorrows now. I wonder where??? Oh, I know! Another Irish Poem!

    A chick named Rachel Dolezal,
Pretended to be a black gal.
    The next few tomorrows,
    She’ll drown all her sorrows,
In the “sweets” line at Golden Corral!

  4. She has resigned, and the NAACP released a statement that integrity matters to them.

It might not matter to MSNBC, but it does to them.

  5. Squeeky – MSNBC is the gift that just keeps on giving, isn’t it? And they call Fox Faux News???

This is just an inexplicable phenomenon to me – the fact that some people on the Left are DEFENDING someone who lied about being black in order to take opportunities away from other black people. Seriously. It’s a question that this is wrong???

If a conservative did this, there would be riots. At least one store would be burned down.

I know people can see things through rose colored political glasses, and I saw the same weird defense of the Filner Headlock sexual assault/harassment mayor. But I am still gobsmacked when I see it, every time.

  6. Will the fun never cease???

On Saturday, MSNBC host Melissa Harris-Perry shared her thoughts about the Rachel Dolezal story with one of her guests.

    Perry said:

“But is it possible that she might actually be black? The best way that I know how to describe this and I want to be very careful here. Because I don’t want to say it’s equivalent to the transgender experience.

But there is a useful language in trans and cis, which is to just to say some of us are born cis-gendered, some of us are born trans-gendered. But I wonder can it be that one would be cis-black and trans-black, that there is actually a different category of blackness, about the achievement of blackness, despite one’s parentage.”

  7. Donald Sterling also made claims of helping employ black people and had people like Magic Johnson considered a friend. That doesn’t mean he’d accept someone related to him by blood admitting that they were black. Her family threw her under the bus in the media for identifying as part black and her adopted brothers accused her of racism akin to a minstrel show saying it would be very racist in the early 1900s apparently no one told them films like A birth of a nation were acceptable for even the president to promote back then. They are fine with her laying claim to a splish splash of Native American but for claiming to be part black as well as white they’ve put her in the media spotlight where she is being ripped to shreds. Should they be immune to criticism for how things play out?

    1. ” They are fine with her laying claim to a splish splash of Native American but for claiming to be part black as well as white they’ve put her in the media spotlight where she is being ripped to shreds. Should they be immune to criticism for how things play out?”

You can criticize the parents all you want to for any reason. But is you criticisms don’t make sense or seem made up of whole cloth, people are going to tell you your criticism don’t seem to hold up.

Further, the actions of the parents and the daughter stand or fall on their own. What ever the parents did or did not do it has nothing to do with the actions and choices of the adult daughter.

I would guess there is something going on between the parents and the daughter. It might be interesting. And the parents might be due some criticism.

But the charge that the parents are somehow embarrassed by association with black ethnicity does not seem to stand up to scrutiny to me. On the contrary they seem to embrace black ethnicity – they have taken 4 African children into their home! What more do white people have to do to get a pass?

You want to criticize the parents? Fine. Find something real.

You want to defend the daughter? Fine. Go to it.

Just don’t try to use the actions of the parents to try to mitigate the choices of the daughter. They don’t.

      1. “But the charge that the parents are somehow embarrassed by association with black ethnicity does not seem to stand up to scrutiny to me. On the contrary they seem to embrace black ethnicity.”

The same could have been said of Donald Sterling and his association with nba players and friendship with magic for years. However adopting black children doesn’t equal wanting themselves to be thought of as part black. I don’t doubt their benevolence. Sterling also wanted his love interest to play up herself as a white Latina. Anything but black.

I’m not using their actions to mitigate hers. Though I would like you to explain what it is that she’s done and how that compares at all to what the republican movement to disenfranchise black voters, gerrymander states to make their voice irrelevant, and repeal the voting rights act. That’s what people who care about the black community should be focusing on. Not some woman who embraces the fact that we all have African ancestry while many with more recent such ancestry are still in denial. I’m merely pointing out they threw her under the bus and that its still rolling over her, in between breaks for shark attacks & the usual business

        1. CK07 – while she was at Howard she thought she was white enough to be discriminated against. That fact that you would defend her defies reality.

          1. Paul,
Read the lawsuit. The court dismissed one of her claims as due to a routine admin error there. Another about her loss of scholarship as being related to her failure to renew by following the normal means. The failure to hire and removal of her artwork seemed to lack evidence showing any such discrimination. She filed what he court considered a frivolous claim. This was filed in 2002. At a school that was known for having administrative errors. She felt it had to be because they considered her white, and since she was likely on scholarship as a white grad student why wouldn’t they. That was 13 years ago. She since had a child with a black man and discovered she like everyone has African roots and chose to identify with those roots. I’m pointing out that she’s done nothing wrong in comparison to the conservative agenda with regard to the black community. Yet she’s made a scapegoat while their actions are largely ignored despite affecting a much larger swath of people.

            1. CK07 – so, when my ancestors branched off to become blue eyed and lactose tolerant, they still stayed black? That will be news to them and me.

” People like her parents and Donald Sterling want those in their circle to be as far from black as possible because it is such a stigma to this day. She’s not even the whitest looking black person out there. Fairer people have passed or not with recent African ancestry. You want to go tell them that they’re not black?”

I don’t recall seeing anything from her parents that would support that statement. My recollection is her parents adopted black children.

Four of them, plus they moved to South Africa for a time, evangelizing to the primarily black poor.

I don’t know who said this but it’s a sad example of extremists inventing whatever circumstances help their argument at the moment. If anything this story is an example of how little racial discrimination matters. It’s not none, but if someone willingly chooses to be subject to whatever amount does exist they clearly don’t see the cost as exorbitant. I can’t imagine anyone doing this 50 years ago.

  9. “You know, I don’t want to pop your balloon, but ALL lives matter.”

Not only that….what you DO with your life matters even more. Just breathing doesn’t create a life that matters.

If you spend your life doing dope, drinking yourself into a stupor, beating on each other, stealing, living on hand outs, welfare, not working at anything other than your next high and wallowing in self pity you have a life that really doesn’t matter as much as if you strive to better yourself, better your community, help others, get an education, do something for yourself, your family, your children. Create something that will last and earn the respect of your fellow human beings.

    THIS matters.

  10. But, being the typical liberal, she refused to apologize or admit she did anything wrong. White privilege.

  11. This crazy woman just resigned. Good to see viral videos can nail liberals as well as cops.

  12. From (His comment anecdote relating to this story) :

“I had a run-in at a local thrift store (one of my favorite haunts) the other day with yet another black fellow wearing a “Black lives matter” tee-shirt. There’s nothing that sets me off like racial identity politics, black or white, so I said in a reasonable tone, “You know, I don’t want to pop your balloon, but ALL lives matter.” You could see he immediately got pissed off, but before he could give me a rejoinder, I said, “That’s why God invented firearms,” and patted my right front pants pocket. He saw the gesture and said the first thing that came to his mind, “F you, M F.” I replied, still quite reasonably, “No, that’s what the pistol is preventing, but I’m serious, all lives matter, yours, mine, everybody’s, regardless of skin color. We all matter, don’t you agree?”

This gave him a bit of pause, not being used to being asked to think about life in terms other than that of slogans. “I’m talking about cops killing young black men,” he replied. “Oh I know what you’re talking about, and I’m no fan of killer cops either, but when you put things in terms of race and race alone, you’re no better than the cowards of the Klan.”

Now he just looked at me. “You know,” I said, “I’ve been fighting THOSE b******s all my life and I’ll tell you something, they are damned happy to see you adopt their way of thinking about life in pure racial terms. And I’ll tell you something else, they are happy as s**t to see y’all murdering each other by the bushel-full every damn day. Hell, not even at the height of their power could they lynch you that fast. And I’ll tell you something else as well. The ghost of every Grand Dragon of the Ku Klux Klan and every wanna-be Neo-Nazi fuhrer who ever lived laughs like hell every morning when the abortion clinics open for business in your neighborhoods. They love white people killing black babies (and most abortionists are white) and they love black kids killing other black kids. Hell, y’all are putting ALL the lynchings of the Klan throughout history in the deep shade and you’re giving the Holocaust a run for its money (and here I raised my voice for the first time) — AND YOU’RE DOING IT ALL TO YOURSELVES. Lord knows that you’re good for comic relief in the parts of Hell that THEY inhabit. And the Devil does too.

He just gaped at me. And we were drawing a small crowd, mostly black women. And two of them were nodding.”

I agree with his assessment… There’s more at the link, it is a poignant read, if you’re interested. (I posted about half of it) Really good logic, eh?

(I posted this yesterday and did not edit out the curses, so I think it will be good now.)
