NAACP Official Faces Accusations That She Is White . . . From Her Mother

rachel3_t620-1.pngThere is another controversy over the veracity of representations of minority status in Washington. We previously discussed the controversy raised by the allegedly false claims of Senator Elizabeth Warren that she is a Native American. In this case, however, the accused is the head of a NAACP chapter and she is being accused of lying by her own mother. Worse yet, some have suggested that Rachel Dolezal, who is the head of the NAACP’s chapter in Spokane, planted hate mail at her office.

Dolezal has described her ethnicity as white, black, and American Indian in past papers and applications. However, her mother, Ruthanne, said that she is Czech, Swedish, and German, along with some “faint traces” of Native American heritage.

That has led to angry responses from different groups that she represented herself as a minority when she was selected for different positions. Dolezal has called the controversy a “multi-layered issue” and insisted “That question is not as easy as it seems. There’s a lot of complexities … and I don’t know that everyone would understand that.” She then added “We’re all from the African continent.” Many have interpreted that statement as a claim that, since mankind itself has been traced to Africa, everyone is an African to some degree. The definition is not sufficient for various groups. It raises, as did the Warren controversy, the basis for claiming minority status — a status that can give an edge in applications or hirings.

In addition, critics have raised suspicious racially motivated incidents reported by Dolezal while she was in Coeur d’Alene, including the discovery of a swastika on the Human Rights Education Institute’s door. Likewise, Spokane police records for February and March of this year showed that a hate mail package Dolezal reported receiving at the NAACP’s post office box did not bear a date stamp or barcode. Dolezal denies responsibility for those incidents.

The question is how to handle such cases in not only definition how to prove or what constitutes minority status or how to respond to allegedly false claims. If one receives payment for holding a position secured by assurance of minority status, can it be an actionable from of fraud or misrepresentation for the purposes of criminal or civil liability?

  1. Squeek, bam and Karen, George Soros and the Clintons are trying to steal the election via litigation on voting rules. Liberals scream about the Koch Brothers. Well, Soros makes them look like pikers.

  2. Squeek, I grew up in Ct. and have a lotta family there. It’s a solid blue state. They have a Dem guv and a 21-15 majority in the legislature.

  3. @WadeWilliams

It is NOT a matter of what “I” said. It is just simply the facts as presented at the link. If you think the National Conference of State Legislatures is a GOP front, then write them and tell them so.

  4. KarenS, In the real world her credibility is non existent. I saw Jake Tapper just shaking his head when he heard from a reporter the NAACP was backing this liar. But, you see she is backed up by liberals. They have different rules. She’s the victim. She has psych issues and needs to be coddled. Imagine a scenario where it’s a conservative group and a conservative liar.

Thank you for the information, but neither state has it yet. The Republicans may be holding it up in Connecticut, but how many years has Connecticut been a state??? How many years were the Democrats in control the last hundred or so??? Plus, why are the Republicans holding it up now??? Could it be the huge number of illegal immigrant voters the Democrats are trying to slip in???

HAMDEN, Conn. (WTNH)–The Connecticut DMV says more than 1,300 undocumented residents signed up today making appointments to take the test on the road to getting a Connecticut “Drive Only” drivers’s license.

Starting one month from tomorrow, January 2, it is expected there will be as many as 700 undocumented Connecticut residents coming to Connecticut DMV locations to take their ‘Lerner’s Permit’ tests every week.

Today Connecticut became the first state in the Northeast to allow undocumented residents to sign up, on line, and make an appointment for those tests.

Werner Oyanadel of the Latino and Puerto Rican Affairs Commission estimates there are at least 100,000 undocumented families living here. “Out of which we believe maybe 60-thouand people may be within the range of age to be able to apply for this license,” Oyanadel tells News 8.

Those applying will have to prove who they are by bringing a passport or some kind of birth certificate or consular identification document. “They have to have been a resident of the state for at least ninety days and written proof of residency to show us that and, they have to pass the exam,” says CT DMV Commissioner Melody Currey.

The ‘drive only’ Connecticut driver’s license will clear designation at the top that it is for driving only and
not a legal form of identifcation for other purposes.

You see, this Voter ID stuff is dynamic, and without the surge in illegals that the Democrats are to stuff ballot boxes with, we don’t know how the GOP might have voted. And you still don’t account for New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, etc. etc. But when the Republican states try to cut back on the number of early days of voting, its Jim Crow. Yeah.

  6. PA early voting?

    No. Legislature very very Republican.

I think Legree’s statement about no early voting whatsoever is inaccurate. All she calls out permit some kind of absentee ballot which is a (lousy) kind of early voting.

As to the rest? It’s a pity. Democrats are in favor but Republicans plead ‘too expensive’ or will enable ‘lots of fraud’. Stir in the usual voter apathy and nobody much cares.

  7. bam, I saw what makes the troll so much against the parents. They’re described in the local paper as “CHRISTIANS.” They hate Christians!!

  8. bam, If you learn nothing from this please understand LIBERALS TAKE CARE OF THEIR OWN! They will enable their own, lie for their own, cheat for their own, and do whatever is necessary to protect their own. And they will eviscerate the opposition.

  9. In addition to the questions raised about the possibility that she has built her career advancement by pretending to be a minority, thus fraudulently giving herself an advantage, there is another aspect.

Her credibility right now is zero. She could say that the sky was blue and I’d take out my color wheel and argue it was cerulean. She has a long documented history of lying, poor judgement, and she heads an organization to promote the welfare of African Americans while she’s arguably stolen opportunities from them.

I typically do not believe that success is “stolen” from anyone else, but in this case it may apply. She went to a majority black college, and she obtained many positions while lying about her ethnicity all along the way since 2006 or 2007. I hope this is thoroughly investigated, to if race was a deciding factor in any of her career and education. IF so, then she did, in fact, steal someone else’s place. Unfortunately, perhaps privacy laws will be cited to block the release of the findings of any of her previous employers.

Personally, I would rather that scholarships be given for a combination of merit and financial need. Jobs should be a strict meritocracy. Take skin color out of it, and everyone would have access to help regardless of something so superficial as the color of their skin. We should intervene early in the education system, so that by the time anyone reasonably capable of any socioeconomic status who has applied her or himself has the same opportunities to either get a job, go to trade school, or go to college.

None of us should be worried that we won’t get a job or a house or into college because we weren’t born with the right skin color. Talk about taking a step backward!

  10. Squeaky Fromm,
Way to ignore the fact that republicans are the main ones blocking early voting in those states too:
    http://mobile.nytimes.com/2013/05/04/opinion/early-voting-in-new-york-means-easier-voting.html?referrer=&_r=0

All but 1 republican votes no in NY.
Yet you fail to address the VRA repeal and voting ID laws which studies have shown are unnecessary and would only harm minorities and the elderly:

Meanwhile you say racism has no tangible effect on minorities while claiming half of black youth are feral savages. With views like that smog conservatives do you really think jobs will give a fair shake to blacks applying for jobs? Even those Jamaicans you described will be viewed as savages by people like you who see black and assume savage. Hence why you justify officers treating them in a discriminatory fashion like the one who killed mike brown saying he saw a demon as opposed to a citizen. Or the many neocons justifying the officer who manhandled that girl in Texas and only rounded up blacks.

Don’t label liberals as racist when you’re unabashedly making comments about half of black youth being savages.

You’re not wrong, but stop and think a minute about the circumstances. Here we are about 50 years past the Civil Rights legislation of the 60’s, and about 60 years past Brown v. Board of Education. These things were supposed to work to bring blacks into the greater prosperity of the nation, and out of being second class citizens.

Still, about half or more of black kids are just feral little savages, who have no desire to learn, and actively work to keep other motivated black kids from learning. The integrated schools are nothing but zoos, and the white and black folks who can afford it send theirs to private schools, including the white liberals. Other white folks who live in predominantly white areas don’t have to come in contact with this crap and are ignorant of it. Large numbers of blacks can’t speak intelligible English. 70+ % of the little b*sturds are born out of wedlock and think the whole world (including liquor stores and shoe stores) owe them a living.

To make it worse, darn if the Black folks who do get married, and do get an education tend to do just fine in life. Black immigrants from Jamaica and Africa seem to be productive and mostly do fine. Gee, does racism just blink on and off and not work on Jamaicans??? Sooo a reasonable interpretation of all this is that progressive policies and Democratic party policies don’t work worth a damn, and in fact are harmful. Now if you are a progressive or Democratic Party wonk, how the hell do you explain all this stuff to where you can still keep getting the black vote and the vote of dumb-a$$ white liberals who need to think they are helping the poor Negroes???

Simple! You just need a new concept to explain the differences and the general black failure to thrive! Because people really aren’t seeing, or doing much racist stuff these days. Blacks can get jobs, and vote, and they have schools to go to, sooo all the 2nd class citizen stuff doesn’t seem to be externally caused. And you sure can’t blame the black folks themselves, because that would mean that all the trillions of dollars that have been wasted were for nothing.

That is where White Privilege comes in! It is a nebulous thing, like Original Sin, and philosophically PRESUMES that white racism through “privilege” exists. Great! Now you know longer have to define racist acts, and basically anything can be an example of White Privilege. Like, reading stories to your kids at night. Your white kid has a mother and a father, and therefore somebody has time to read Goldilocks and The Three Bears! Poor little black kid has some whore for a mother who is busy with some unemployed loser black man, and they are both too busy drinking, smoking dope, and screwing to read a bedtime story. Do we condemn the black mother??? Oh hell no! We blame the white parents, and call it White Privilege.

    IMHO.

It’s astounding that someone accused of such irregularities, who very well may have potentially displaced a black student at a predominantly all-black university, who may have potentially usurped the financial assistance specifically allocated for use by a deserving minority student, who falsely portrayed herself as black to garner a lead position at the NAACP and on the police commission, is the recipient of such ambivalence. Wonders never cease. All the noise about helping minorities and seeking fairness in a racist society, espoused by liberals, appears to go up in smoke when someone has been accused of misappropriation of that very assistance or behaves in a deceptive manner with regard to minorities. Somehow, someway, this con artist is the recipient of sympathy. Granted, if she is truly mentally ill, there is a certain degree of that; however, if Caitlin Jenner is hailed as a hero and isn’t deemed to be mentally ill for believing to be trapped in the wrong body, then it’s gonna be a tough sell to allege that she is nuts for believing that she is a black woman in a Caucasian body.

    1. Yet if she had applied to an HBCU as a white woman she’d have been more likely to receive assistance for diversity. http://www.collegescholarships.org/scholarships/white-scholarship-guide.htm

If she did a poor job in her position would she have been elected head of the chapter? I’d rather the best person for the job be in a position of helping people of a particular group, than someone not as good who could only help less people. At most you’re saying her actions theoretically harmed one person. Meanwhile the GOP’s gerrymandering, Voter ID, restrictions on early voting and repeal of the voting rights act may affect tens of thousands, or more living in the states where droves are discouraged from voting. I don’t see how the two are comparable.

      1. It’s irrelevant as to whether or not she performed her duties in a competent manner. What is relevant is that she was (probably) offered the job based on her assertion that she was, in fact, an African American, applying for the position to head the local NAACP chapter. It’s about deception. It’s about lying about who and what you are. It’s about an organization, like the NAACP, having the right to know who, in fact, is heading one of its chapters and making a conscious decision about its leadership. Does anyone honestly think that any of the NAACP chapters have anyone in authority, like a chapter head, who is white? I seriously doubt it. She fooled them into hiring her, based upon a false premise, and the NAACP doesn’t want to appear to be discriminatory or racist, now that the ruse has been revealed, by coming out against her.

A few years back, the CEO of Radio Shack resigned. By all accounts, he had managed to turn around a company which had been faltering. Why did he resign? Because he lied about who he was: he lied about the qualifications that he posted as part of his credentials. The company discovered that he didn’t have two of the academic degrees that he had declared. He had to leave, not because of incompetence. He had to leave because of the deceit. Job performance is not the saving grace.

  13. I’ve seen many Caucasians adopt styles typically worn by African Americans – dreadlocks or braids without ever lying about their own ancestry. They just enjoy the style without becoming unhealthy about it.

Did she lie because she is mentally ill? I recall that man who murdered his wife when she found out he’d been lying about being a medical student. When his fantasy unravelled he murdered her. Is it a mental illness if you know you are lying? I recall in your link there was a video where someone asked her for the first time if that was her father’s picture, and if she was really black. She started panting, and you could see distress on her face. I think she knew she’d been caught. Or was this a deliberate strategy to make it easier to get a job. Because it is easier to get into school and get a job if you are a minority and are savvy about exploiting quotas and Affirmative Action. Her degree from Howard is from a traditionally black university. Or did she feel that her life was lonely, so pretending to be downtrodden made her feel like she belonged to a supportive group?

  14. Paul: I’m not really sure who I would get if I selected her as a juror. I don’t think she exclusively claims to be black; she identifies as multi-racial. Presumably someone who could adopt a different gender or ethnicity would be able to look at things from various perspectives….It’s an odd situation and rather sad.

LOL. When I first heard about this, I thought Elizabeth Warren Syndrome must be contagious. But it appears he’s claimed it was a mistake and he just checked the wrong box once, but no other times. Elizabeth Warren did not make a mistake because she argued that she WAS American Indian until it was proven she was not. If it comes out that he used the name “Juan” on his college application and got a scholarship for Latinos, then he’d be in some hot water.

The woman in the above article has a history of changing her appearance and getting jobs and a college degree by claiming to be a minority.

Maybe the conservatives should take a note from Hillary Clinton’s playbook. She won’t take an interview or answer any questions about breaking the law numerous times, but the polls show the Democrats just love her.

I don’t know who I’m voting for yet. Nobody “wows” me so far.

  16. LOL!! bam, NOBODY can enable like liberals. The liberal royalty Kennedy and Clinton families are prime examples. The largest contributors to Dems year in and out are trial lawyers. They are the ultimate enablers, erasing personal responsibility from our culture. With liberals, it’s always someone else’s fault. Poor girl is just misunderstood. Pitiful.

  17. Technically, this should fit in the bounds of America’s historic one drop rule. The average human has 6 liters of blood in their body. That’s 120,000 drops of blood. Even the most Aryan of neonazi’s is at most 200,000 years away from the mitochondrial Eve in Africa, or a fraction of the history of the universe. Natural selection led to your average european appearing White supposedly as recently as 8,000 years ago. So that’s maybe 300 generations.

So even if you have some heavy alien dna in there somewhere along the line you’re shedding at least 400 drops of distinctly black blood, and probably far more. Of course if the US had applied that definition during Slavery and Segregation everyone would be a slave and using the colored only bathrooms. But this recent distinction of race in human history is truly an unfortunate example of our willingness to collectively follow ignorant psuedo-science and take it as fact.

I think it’s beautiful she’s willing to embrace her diverse human ancestry, no matter how distant. This is different from Warren because not only does she actually have said ancestry but she’s taking an active role in supporting the community. Warren never affiliated with Native Americans and did so only for political purposes.

    1. “I think it’s beautiful she’s willing to embrace her diverse human ancestry, no matter how distant. ”

It seems to me there is a problem if she took advantage of any special programs for African Americans. Those programs were designed, however imperfectly, to support the efforts of those who have been disadvantaged by racism.

I think it is a stretch to argue that her background has lead to limitations based on racism.

The programs are not perfect. They don’t always identify those who were damaged or those who are deserving. But that is there purpose. And, regardless of the historical genetic argument, I see no reason to believe this woman suffered from or was limited by racism – except possibly that which was due to her own claim.

We can question the necessity or the efficacy of the programs. But a claim for special consideration by a person with her background would be an abuse.

      1. It depends if she took advantage of special programs for African Americans. Working for the NAACP and even going to an HBCU is not race restricted. In fact HBCUs provide scholarships for white students. It’s about diversity now.

I’m not sure what programs she was taking advantage of other than having a job with an organization people generally think of as being black only. If she did a poor job in her position there and didn’t really do anything to help the community I’d have a problem with it. But if she was appointed to the position because she was the best woman for the job and didn’t take any benefits from the community (of which I’m not sure what they’d be…she’s supposedly part native american according to her mother too so maybe she’d be eligible for some benefits there, however I don’t think she’d have the tribal paper’s for it) then I can’t say it’s a real problem.

Right now the bigger threat to the African American community are the efforts of the GOP to disenfranchise them, repeal civil rights laws enacted to prevent states known for discriminating against them, and gerrymander state voting districts into some of the weirdest shapes knwon to man. All the while conservative media outlets like drudge report and fox news happily demonize black victims of police brutality yet claim progressives are the racists for not supporting whatever minority they can find to run on a platform of destroying minority protections against discrimination.

  18. Some parents. They’re hurt so they go to the press to show the world their pain.

Sounds like just the thing loving parents should do.

It’s especially loving in view of the fact that, as most of us agree, this woman is probably ill.

  19. bam, Reading between the lines, I think it was this liar posting a photo of a black man and saying it was her father was what did it, but that’s not for certain. These parents weren’t pissed, their body language, tone, and demeanor was pain, they were hurt, not angry.
