“This Flag Never Goes Down”: Amazon Reportedly Takes Down Historical Book On Confederate Flag Due To Confederate Flag On Cover

3178086_480The extensive move to remove the Confederate Flag from public and some commercial settings has raised serious concerns over both free speech and academic freedom. While the flag has been used as a racist symbol, it is also a historical symbol. According to one author, that distinction appears to have been lost by Amazon, which reportedly took done the book by Michael Dreese, a civil war author with six books on the conflict. Two of those books concern both the Union and Confederate battle flags and their roles in the Civil War. However, “This Flag Never Goes Down” (a book on the Confederate flag) was taken down by Amazon from its listed works.

The move by Amazon is reminiscent of the move by Apple to remove games, including Civil War games, featuring the flag. Apple later back pedaled on the historical products.

Dreese says that he received an email from Amazon asking him to take down the listing. He says that the book is nonfiction and does not advocate for the flag. It is a historical work.

Amazon.com-Logo.svgI did find the book on the UK Amazon this morning. It is not clear if Amazon reversed the actions cited by Dreese or has not carried through on the delisting. The controversy is the subject of chatrooms on Amazon.

If the story is true (and I have no reason to doubt this author), it is a bizarre move by Amazon and captures the concern of free speech advocates and academics over the wholesale effort to remove every image of the confederacy from statue to mosaics to flags. There needs to be some recognition and tolerance for historical images and particularly academic work.

What do you think?

  1. Censorship is ugly and using the flag lowering in SC to justify it is knee-jerk crap. Put it in a plain brown wrapper if the cover is offensive.

  2. Do you think Rue Paul understands the word “reportedly” that I used?

  3. Rue Paul sounds like someone from a failed blog. Squeek predicted the rats would jump on this ship.

  4. This is interesting.

I checked Amazon, and the book is there. So I wondered if this was a mistaken story. I did find this Amazon Forum in which customers were outraged that the book had been pulled in the US, so it appears that this did actually happen.

Did Amazon come to its senses and re-list? If the book had been there all along, I would have assumed that would have been pointed out on the 3 pages of really pissed people venting on Amazon until the moderator locked the thread.

  5. Well, some stupid Liberals are behind Trump for the same reason they are against the Confederate Flag! I cut and pasted the whole editorial to here:

Donald Trump is catching hell for casting aspersions on John McCain’s status as a so-called war hero. Well, for once Trump is right! Why should we honor a person who tried to interfere in another country’s revolution? Who flew a supersonic jet fighter bomber and killed who knows how many innocent North Vietnamese?

What is heroic about being saved from drowning by the very people he was bombing? What is heroic about those same people providing him room and board for nearly 6 years, instead of executing straightaway him as a murderer?

Isn’t that exactly the same reason our country is finally driving down the Confederate Flag? Because there was nothing heroic about fighting to continue slavery. It took America 150 years to come to grips with that fact. If we do not go ahead and break this unholy cycle of soldier-worship, we can not repent for our intervention in Vietnam’s business until the year 2115.

Nor can we make the mistake of blaming McCain’s actions on his “orders.” We resolved that issue during the Nuremberg Trials during 1945-1946, when high ranking Nazis tried to excuse their genocidal activities on the excuse that they were just following orders. They were held accountable for what they did, and so should McCain.

While I would never support a racist like Donald Trump for President, he is right about John McCain. He is no hero. He is just another ugly American.

  6. But wait!

Maybe they will prefer Walker who promises War With Iran on his inauguration day.

Mark your calendars and order your kids gravestones.

  7. Oh gee. The author may be the source of the ‘story’.

    Oh gee….why would he lie?

    LOT of dumb readers here.

  8. Donald Trump is at 24%! McCain isn’t a war hero because he was capture, ya know. Conservatives are their own worst enemies, lol. We can sit back and watch the show, it’s going to be interesting. Oops off topic. Sooooo sorry.

  9. Another lie – so far Hervay’s death is a stupid accident. He wasn’t RUN off the road. There will be an investigation. Maybe we better send Nick. Then there will be no need of an investigation…

:A passenger in Hervey’s car, Arlene Barnum, tells The Associated Press that Hervey swerved and crashed after another vehicle carrying four or five young black men pulled up alongside them, yelling and looking angry. Barnum said Hervey yelled something back at the other vehicle before losing control and crashing.

“It spun like crazy and we flipped, flipped, flipped. It was awful,” she said.

She said she gave that account to a Mississippi state trooper when she was taken to a hospital after the accident.

The Mississippi Highway Patrol did not immediately respond to an Associated Press query asking if officials are investigating Barnum’s account.

Mississippi Highway Patrol spokesman Johnny Poulos said Monday in a written statement that no other details of the accident will be available until accident reconstruction experts have had a chance to take a look at the evidence.”

  10. The book is on sale.

Time to tell it like it is.

    Turley is a liar.

  11. Hervey was into Civil War reenactment, attended Harvard, and loved the writing of Sartre.

  12. Hervey is a supporter of the Confederate flag and was reportedly on his way to a rally.

  13. In what can only be described as surreal, a black man named Anthony Hervey, was reportedly run off the road and killed by a carload of black men, in Mississippi. It is Mississippi Burning w/ just a “slightly” different twist.

  14. Economic freedom? Isn’t EVERYTHING covered in this:

    The Preamble

We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

Looks like government is limited to security and infrastructure as

Justice, Tranquility, Common Defence, Promote General Welfare

    (utilities, roads, post office, etc.),

as the “blessings of liberty” are freedom and free enterprise without interference by government.

To be clear, the Communist Manifesto came along 72 years later because Marx didn’t like the Preamble, Constitution and Bill of Rights.

He gave us that which did not exist in the American founding documents:

    Social Engineering
Control of the “means of production”
    Central Planning
    Redistribution of Wealth

The American thesis is freedom and self-reliance.

    That is all.
