We have another unnerving case of a recent convert to Islam allegedly turning quickly to involvement in terrorism. Enrique Marquez, 24, legally purchased the AR-15 rifles that his neighbor San Bernardino gunman Syed Farook and his wife Tashfeen Malik used to kill 14 people and injure 21 others. Police say that former security guard Marquez had recently converted to Islam and was part of the planning for the attack but got cold feet after the arrests in a nearby town of terrorism suspects in an unrelated case. He will initially face gun charges since he transferred the weapons to the couple after serving as the purchaser.
Marquez is also related to Farook by marriage. He married the sister-in-law of Farook’s older brother. Marquez and and his new wife, Mariya Chernykh, listed their address on the marriage license at the same Corona home where Syed Raheel and Tatiana Farook live. He also converted and had gone to a few services at the local mosque. Just seven months ago, Marquez was attending punk rock concerts. He was working at local Wal-Mart, which has since fired him.
Law enforcement officials say that Farook and Marquez had discussed carrying out attacks in the Los Angeles area in 2012. executing an attack somewhere in the Los Angeles area in 2012, but decided not to do so after four people were arrested in nearby Riverside County in an unrelated terror case.
Marquez checked into a mental health facility after the attacks in San Bernardino. It will be interesting to see if the policy will seek confidential notes from that mental health visit. In the Menendez brothers murder case, police used the notes of the therapist against them at trial. L. Jerome Oziel was later accused of violating confidentiality and stripped of his license in 1997.
The rapid conversion and alleged radicalization of people like Marquez makes the task of law enforcement all the most difficult. It also shows the folly of Trump’s plan to simply bar all Muslims from entry into the United States. A terrorist is willing to kill innocent people. He clearly will not be troubled in saying that he is a Quaker if needed to enter the country. Moreover, these groups have ready made recruits within the country, particularly among the mentally unstable in the population.

What are you calling propaganda, Chip?
Explain your reasoning.
MPR DEC 9, 2015
“An Eagan man accused of providing material support to the terrorist organization ISIS in Syria made his first court appearance Thursday morning before a federal judge.
Abdirizak Warsame, a 20-year-old security guard, was ordered held pending a detention hearing on Tuesday. He will also be assigned
Prosecutors say Warsame encouraged the planned departures of several friends who have since been charged in the massive terrorism case — and at one point, was named their leader, according to a court document filed Wednesday.
Warsame is the 10th Twin Cities man federal authorities have charged with planning to join the terror group ISIS in Syria. He was arrested Wednesday evening.“
The propaganda spewed on here is unnerving…
An intellectual is supposed to strive for free thought…. That is not really found here.
Don’t have a solution in mind. However the exclusionary principle being espoused is a very slippery slope. At one time there were laws re. not just Blacks but Jews, Catholics along with LGBT to name a few.
There are two “dittys” which usually come to mind. One has to do with losing a nail for a horseshoe. The other is the one which ends with the authorities coming for man who didn’t speak up for his neighbor.
The first act leading to any war is the objectification of the enemy……Redskins, Nips, Krauts, Kikes, Slopes, Ragheads, Commies. Generalizations overwhelm sound strategic and tactical thinking.
Who among us can tell the difference between an Arab Isis extremist and an Arab Coptic? (No sarcasm please.).
Nobody (cough) saw this coming. The sad thing is that this is in danger of becoming a trend–young people doing stupid stuff because it seems to be the thing to do. Sort of the way suicides have a way of rippling through extended communities. I hope it runs its course quickly.
It also shows the folly of Trump’s plan to simply bar all Muslims from entry into the United States.
Does it? Does the fact that some felons access guns folly of denying felons guns? I’d say this is a fallacy, that because perfection can’t be reached mitigation efforts are not appropriate.
While I’m not a fan of Trump’s plans I’m also not a fan of the hysterical and unhinged response to it either.
Paul, you are spot on: Stop visas to and from states with sharia. Close down the radicalized mosques and madrassas.
We need spies to infiltrate every friggin mosque in America.
There is information from a law enforcement source the other target was a school. A photo of a local high school was reportedly found on the dead terrorists phone.
The brilliant and beautiful, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, was interviewed on CNN last night. She reiterated that there is a radical element in Islam, and it is no longer fringe. She stated it is quickly becoming mainstream around the world, including w/ Muslims who already live here. Ms. Ali clearly stated that this WH is burying its head in the sand.
While I don’t agree w/ all of the steps some here suggest, we are @ war w/ this growing radical sect of Islam. Normal Muslims, and I KNOW they exist, are intimidated. So is our President. I don’t believe Trump is the guy to lead us in a war, but he is at least moving the needle away from the appeasing prez currently occupying the WH.
So while there is a debate over the Trump remarks, France closes 3 mosques and finds hundreds of weapons.
Exit question: How will all of Europe’s leaders who screamed about Donald Trump suggesting a temporary ban on Muslim immigration or closing mosques react to this news?
I like KCFlemmings’ recommendations. This new guy is a friggin Mexican. Add them to the list. Not all Mexicans. Just friggin Mexicans.
Barring all people from Muslim states is good. Add: Muslim pirate territories. You really can not describe Somalia and Yemen as “states”. It is kind of like calling Texas a “state”.
I agree with closing down the radicalized mosques.
KCFleming – to your list I would add: Stop visas to and from Muslim states. This won’t stop them, but it will slow them down.

California Governor Jerry Brown leaves assault weapon loop hole open:
To hear Gov. Jerry Brown of California condemn Arizona and Nevada for lax gun laws that provide “a gigantic back door through which any terrorist can walk,”
you might forget that he personally kept open the back door that had long made the weapons such as were used in the San Bernardino killings legal and readily available in his state.
But he did exactly that with a veto two years ago , when he vetoed a bill that would have closed “the bullet button loophole.”
But the fact remains that the guns were only available for legal sale in the first place because of the bullet button loophole.
And because Gov. Brown subsequently vetoed the bill that would have closed it, the loophole persists even after the San Bernardino killings.
Alternative A:
1. Admit we are at war.
2. Stop immigration from Muslim nations.
3. Close down the radical mosques, including the one attended by these terrorists. France is already doing this; so can we.
4. Stop treating terrorism as a crime, because these are acts of war. Military trials for terrorists, followed by quick executions.
Alternative B:
1. Expect more and more Islamic terrorism until you submit to Islam and sharia law.
Choose one.
Guantanamo is there. Sort out those that have been there since 9/11 and clean out some new cells for the likes of this criminal, mentally insane, or however else he wishes to represent himself. That is where they should go to spend the rest of their lives; no communication from the outside world, no nothing.
The justice system must not trip over itself on this one. Take him out of society for good.
Reblogged this on L'horreur islamique à l'âge des ténèbres ن.
I’m a little surprised he waived his Miranda Rights and it appears thus far that he doesn’t have an attorney (at least not one that has come forward.)
that might be the only upshot in this tragedy – guy knows he’s guilty as sin and is sparing the victims’ families and to a lesser extent the taxpayers from having to endure some show trial.
he’s obviously got a plea deal lined up in exchange for his cooperation; if he receives anything less than 30 years-to life in prison then it will be a complete miscarriage of justice.
This gentleman needs to be introduced to the American penitentiary system. Better yet, use the Soviet 1941/42 method. Take him to a small room, sit him before a table. Slam down a revolver and advise you’ll be back in 5 minutes.
It’s a tough thing to say, but this individual deserves little consideration or compassion. The blood of the dead and maimed, and the suffering of their families fall upon him just as much as the dead terrorists. He didn’t just buy the weapons and (?) ammo. He knew what was intended.
