Risqué Rompe: Teacher Fired After Winning Dance Contest While On Vacation

3306FB1C00000578-3532399-image-m-18_1460287069373The teacher was on vacation during Easter and enjoying herself in her private time. However, when she returned, she was called to a meeting with the school’s administration and lawyer who pushed her to resign from the Instituto Cumbre Del Noroeste in Ciudad Obrejon.

I have previously written about concerns that public employees are increasingly being disciplined for actions in their private lives or views or associations outside of work. We have previously seen teachers (here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here) students (here, here and here) and other public employees (here and here and here) fired for their private speech or conduct, including school employees fired for posing in magazines (here), appearing on television shows in bikinis (here), or having a prior career in the adult entertainment industry (here).

Frankly, I tend to be a bit of prude about such things and find twerking rather off-putting. However, many do not and this teacher was on vacation. The message seems to be that a teacher cannot engage in any conduct viewed by parents or administrators as suggestive or inappropriate in her private time. What if this was a case of an artistic or expressive dance in a studio? Would that be allowed? The fact is that much more conduct is observable on social media today.  However, that has given rise to a type of fishbowl existence for teachers.  One teacher was even disciplined for a picture drinking wine in Europe while on vacation.   The obvious (and preferable) alternative is to explain to students that teachers are entitled to enjoy their private lives as they deem fit — according to their own values and interests.

What do you think?

  1. Terminating an employee for engaging in lawful conduct in his or her free time is an abuse of the employment relationship.

  2. so what if she’s stripped down to her undies? so what if she’s twerking? so what? What sort of power does the school think it has? Power to dictate what an employee does outside the work place which is totally unrelated to her job… You are not going to put someone in a stuffy box of your own moral expectations!!!! downright intrusive!!!

  3. I see, it was just a pointless critique of Fox without any logical basis and really has nothing to do with this topic.

It’s really just Obama’s fault. And the gays.

  4. mr. fox has never been worried about his country why start now. Trumps wall is nonsense so he has to get in on the high profile nonsense.

  5. No, Justice Holmes, speaking against Trump’s wall nonsense is more of an example of worrying about his country than getting involved in the firing of a teacher. Any negative effect on trade effects a nation more than a teacher being fired for dancing.

  6. Neal, I think there are a great many people around that wish we still had such rules for woman teachers. Sad that we are still so far from a society that lets individuals enjoy their lives as they see fit when that lifestyle has no affect on others.

  7. @joshzzzz: Review the video. First, she wasn’t wearing a bikini. She had stripped down to her underwear (white bra and panties). Second, she wasn’t dancing. She was “twerking,” which is a simulated sex act. Third, whether she’s a slut or a tramp I don’t know, but she’s certainly acting like one. Under these circumstances, I believe the school was justified in firing her.

  8. In the USA in the 1930s female school teachers who weren’t married had to live in school board approved rooming houses, had to appear in church on Sunday, and were allowed to see gentlemen friends under strictly controlled circumstances only.

  9. We had a teacher in high school who had previously worked in a cathouse prior to getting her degree. She had to keep it quiet. Those of us who knew became her “pen pals”. If you know what I mean jelly bean.

  10. If Lady Gaga, Beyonce and Madonna Material Girl finds out about this? They appear in schools as role models.

  11. No Joshzzzz. I am of the opinion that Mr. fox should focus on his country and we should focus on ours. I also believe that morality police whether in Saudi Arabia or Mexico or the US regardless of their title are dangerous.

As to Trump not a fan but Mr Fox doesn’t have much to recommend him either.

  12. Sure, this is something the former president of Mexico should be solving. The way Bush and Clinton are ALWAYS personally getting involved in these types of things.

Oh, I see, you just wanted to go after him for daring to oppose Donald Trump.

  13. Let me see the Saudis have allegedly put some Iimits on their morality police but the Mexican authorities who cannot control murders, the drug cartel and corruption are firing a teacher for dancing. Where is former Presten V. Fox when his country needs him? In NYC attacking Donald Trump of course.

  14. Robbing a bank is a crime. Dancing in a bikini isn’t, nor does it make one a slut. All clear?

  15. Someone at the school considered her to be a scandal to the institution, the students and society in general. She looked like a slut, and they don’t want a slut teaching their children. What’s so hard about this? What if she robbed a bank on “her private time”?

  16. Actually it wasn’t the twerking. She was fired because that red baseball cap she was wearing read: “Make Mexico Great Again – Keep Our People Home.”

  17. 1) Wondering if the school’s “administration” routinely peruses bikini contest and other salacious video in it’s quest to be the Morality Police.

    2) Methinks “Miss Clarissa” will get many lucrative job offers as this story gains some momentum.
