DNC CFO Marshall Apologizes For Email Pushing Religious-Based Attack On Sanders [UPDATED]

Wasserman SchultzThe Democratic National Committee (DNC) is still attempting to spin out of the scandal over the recently leaked emails showing that, as long claimed by critics, it was undermining Bernie Sanders and rigging the process for Hillary Clinton during the primaries. It would seem obvious to most of us that not only should Debbie Wasserman Schultz resign, but a number of DNC officials fired for the emails, particularly DNC CFO Brad Marshall. Yet, the DNC is been largely quiet and clearly hoping that Democrats simply do not care if they have been directly misled by the DNC, which sought to engineer the win for Clinton.  It may be right.  Many Democratic voters (like many Republican voters) seem to have simply accepted that politicians lie to them and that people who are demanding honesty from leaders are naive (or do not see “the bigger picture”).  The DNC is clearly hunkering down to see if “this too shall pass” with voters.  While Wasserman Schultz has given up her speaking role at the convention, she is clinging on to the chairmanship of the party. Update: Wasserman Schultz has resigned but there is still little media attention to Marshall, Davey, and others at the DNC who actively plotted against Sanders).

The sheer mendacity of the Democratic leadership in these emails is breathtaking.  At the very time that these officials were denying allegations that they were undermining Sanders at every turn, Marshall and his colleagues were secretly doing exactly what they were publicly denying.  However, Marshall was particularly disgraceful in his effort to use Sanders’ faith against him.  He pushed for an attack on Sanders as an agnostic or atheist. That should not sit well with the millions of agnostics and atheists in this country — one of the fastest going segments of the population.

Marshall wrote that “for KY and WVA can we get someone to ask his belief. Does he believe in a God. He had skated on saying he has a Jewish heritage. I think I read he is an atheist. This could make several points difference with my peeps. My Southern Baptist peeps would draw a big difference between a Jew and an atheist.” This went to various DNS communications directors who were also busy denying that any secret effort against Sanders.DNC CEO Amy Dacey responded “Amen”  Both Dacey and Marshall have been part of a concerted denial of such efforts and both should have been fired with other officials involved in these exchanges.

Marshall’s apology only magnifies the problem.  He wrote

“I deeply regret that my insensitive, emotional emails would cause embarrassment to the DNC, the Chairwoman, and all of the staffers who worked hard to make the primary a fair and open process. The comments expressed do not reflect my beliefs nor do they reflect the beliefs of the DNC and its employees. I apologize to those I offended.”

Really?  You send an email to other DNC officials suggesting an attack on a Democratic candidate’s religion and, after being caught, you say that it does not “reflect my beliefs”?  This was not some aside at a party but an email sent to other party functionaries.  Moreover, Marshall makes no mention of the fact that he, Dacey, and Wasserman Schultz were denying such a secret campaign against Sanders at the very time that these emails were sent.  The very fact that the DNC did not immediately dump Marshall, Dacey and others is telling.  Indeed, they should have been let go when these emails were sent, let alone after they were forced to acknowledge their dishonest and disgraceful conduct.

  1. Rose,

If Putin did it, is the information untrue? Putin is a red herring 🙂 There was clearly a plot to interfere with an American election. That plot was instituted and acted upon by the DNC. Why that doesn’t bother you is beyond me. But it is typical of what I’e come to expect from Democratic party loyalists.

  2. @Autumn

I watched Clinton Cash last night. I have not watched the other stuff because I find the whole “child soldier” thing sooo disturbing. Like animal cruelty stories. I just can’t watch them.

But yes, I know that rich white people make a lot of money off poor black people in Africa. And here in America.

  3. Rose, for you the important part is everything is well for the DNC. For others of us it matters that: 1. there is collusion between the press and the DNC, 2. that voters were disenfranchised, 3. that voters were disrespected on the basis of being gay, Hispanic and Christian and finally 4. that there is massive financial fraud in the Clinton campaign.

But Bernie is O.K. with it and so are loyal Democrats so–nothing to see here!

  4. @squeek

BTW – I started to watch the”Clinton Cash” film – watched up until the XL Pipeline and then shut it down as I’d like my husband to watch it as well. A lot I already knew – the Clinton Foundation pocketing the “yuuge” majority of “donations” for themselves, uh, I mean “administrative costs”, Africa & Haiti shenanigans. I happen to have studied both Nigeria and the Congo – such poverty and unrest despite incredible , natural resources which are being plundered by corporate interests – money flowing to the corrupt leaders, continual warfare and the Clinton Foundation. But then it is Trump who wants to kill the blacks right??

Did you ever see “Blood Diamond”? or Anthony Bourdain’s trip to the Congo?

It has to be one of the saddest countries on Earth….

  5. Jill. Really don’t consider the DNC officials to be my “leaders”. They are a bunch of hacks. Oh well, Debbie is gone and will quite likely be replaced by Julian Castro. Party chair is a thankless job. Marcia Fudge will chair the convention. So maybe something good HAS come out of the hack.

  6. Whew! Everyone can relax!

Obviously, cooler heads prevailed which is sure to please all of you.

Notice there was no public questioning (or sneering remarks) of Sen. Sander’s religious beliefs.

Maybe someone should contact Professor Turley about this. He obviously is in turmoil concerning the very possibility.

Interesting that he has not shared similar concerns about Trump’s (possible next president) idea to ease American libel laws. I think he mentioned someone about the American press being disasters or something.

  7. Professor Turley

Where is you comments on the FBI wonderful press conference on Clinton. You were on vacation. Right.
But no comment when you got back.
Can I take that you will accept Clinton even through the evidence was there. And the FBI chief remind the rest of us if we do the same all hell will fall on us. I just can’t again read this blog if you can’t as a Law Professor comment on that disgrace.

  8. SMM,

I keep hearing about these sources but no one will name them. Who are these sources?

Again, no matter if Santa, Satan or Dr. Evil released the e-mails, are they untrue?

  9. “On Friday, Wikileaks published 20,000 emails stolen from the Democratic National Committee. They reveal, among other things, thuggish infighting, a push by a top DNC official to use Bernie Sanders’ religious convictions against him in the South, and attempts to strong-arm media outlets. In other words, they reveal the Washington campaign monster for what it is.

But leave aside the purported content of the Wikileaks data dump (to which numerous other outlets have devoted considerable attention) and consider the source. Considerable evidence shows that the Wikileaks dump was an orchestrated act by the Russian government, working through proxies, to undermine Hillary Clinton’s Presidential campaign.

“This has all the hallmarks of tradecraft. The only rationale to release such data from the Russian bulletproof host was to empower one candidate against another. The Cold War is alive and well,” Tom Kellermann, the CEO of Strategic Cyber Ventures told Defense One.” From the article above. No one is surprised about this crap that has worked in politics including Bernie Sanders.

  10. Stick around. Unless Donald cleans up his act then more of his emails will make it to the “news”. All the news that’s fit to print. Which is not much of Donald’s news.

  11. SMM,

So, it is wrong for us to know that we are being manipulated, that voter fraud has been committed and that financial fraud is being committed? Also it is terrible that we learned about the collusion between the DNC and the media? Count me as a citizen who wants to know what my “leaders” are up to when it effects me personally. But glad to know how you really feel.

P.S. Your e-mail is already hacked by this govt. Too late to worry about that happening.

  12. I don’t know that the public has a right to personal emails. The DNC is not a government entity. I certainly don’t like it when my email is hacked. I guess the RNC’s emails are better protected. I can’t recall another time when a political party has had its emails hacked.

  13. O.K. I’ll try my comment again in a shorter form:

    SMM,

Let’s grant you that Putin himself put out this information into the public domain. As no one has denied its veracity do you feel that the public should not know this information?

  14. @squeek

Self-imposed delusion IMO I used to say heads in the sand, but sand is clean (cept for tar sands) Now I say sticking heads in the sewer – a cess pool – rank and toxic

  15. SMM,

Let’s grant you the fact that Putin himself released these e-mails. As no one has denied what is in them does this mean they should be ignored? Does the information they contain have any relevance to the public?

For you, does this mean the public does not not have a right to know this information since it came from Russia or Putin or Trump or whoever is the villain that put it out?
