There is a new controversy at Claremont Colleges where a housing advertisement specifically barred white students from living in an off-campus house. Karé Ureña (PZ ’18) posted a housing offer for People of Color only and added “I don’t want to live with any white folks.” There has been a rising objection, particularly from conservative students, that there is a double standard on campuses and that, in this case, the school would never tolerate a student barred blacks or Hispanics from applying for housing. Indeed, off-campus housing at Tulane University was recently the scene of students tearing down a display viewed as racist without any sanction from the university. Some (even CNN commentators) insist that African-Americans or people of color cannot be racist by definition. For example, CNN Political commentator Marc Lamont Hill has maintained that black people lack the “institutional power” necessary to “deploy racism.”
The post at Claremont states that “POC [people of color] only” will be considered for this living opportunity. Various students supported the right to bar whites. For example, AJ León (PZ ’18), a member of the Pitzer Latino Student Union is quoted as saying that “This is directed to protect POC, not white people. Don’t see how this is racist at all…” So, if a white student says, he does not want to live with Hispanics, that would not be directed at Hispanics?
Sara Roschdi (PZ ’17), also Pitzer Latino Student Union member, insisted, “People of color are allowed to create safe POC only spaces. It is not reverse racism or discriminatory, it is self preservation.” Another Nina Lee, a Women’s Studies major, objected to those objecting: “We don’t want to have to tiptoe around fragile white feelings in a space where we just want to relax and be comfortable.”
Other comments in support of the exclusion are too profane to include in this column, but can be read here.
Claremont has not responded what it would do with white students who bar students of color from off-campus housing. However, the controversy should produce a response from the school on its policy on such racial discrimination in housing.
What do you think?

I will keep the car til it dies as I always do. I’ve only ever owned 3 cars in my lifetime. Trust me, I’d love to own a Tesla, but that’s not feasible. I drive a “yuuge” Caddy Deville so I have lots of room. I put the stickers on magnets so I can switch ’em out — or take them off if need be. For example there is a particular area of town here chock full of SJWs who all support HRC. I am actually afraid of having my car keyed or a window broken so when I’m in that area I take off “Hillary for Prison” and put it in the trunk. The Hilbots truly scare me!! Seriously deranged folks. I have lost more than a few longterm friends because this primary.

The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. Firstly, you obviously did not watch Trump during his run against all of his opponents whom he ‘labeled’, lied about, demeaned, etc. Everything you posted goes many times over for Trump. He is Hitler and Goebbles reincarnate.
Secondly, if there ever was a parallel to Adolf Hitler and Goebbles it is Donald Trump. Trump is the quintessential boss who rallies his troops from the angry and shallow. He gives them targets for which to vent their over burdened spleens. The truth has no place in the mob mentality. The only ingredients necessary are anger, short memory, and to be coming along at the right time. One can vote for Clinton fully understanding that she is a snake, a sleaze, and a politician. Because, there is no other choice. Trump is all of those things many times squared but on top of that he is simply stupid. Trump could have taken America completely if he had simply not left reality so obviously. He has nothing else but what he continues to regurgitate.
It is not a statement that Clinton is not a liar, sleaze bag, and politician to vote for Trump. It is a statement that America is not up for sale to the latest carnival barker to come along. You need to read some newspapers and put things in perspective. Donald Trump may be wealthy at real estate development but that game far eclipses politics for all the sordid elements.
Why doesn’t Trump release his tax returns? Because that is one lie he couldn’t squirm out of. There’s nothing there but hate and angst. Enjoy the ride until November.

Huh??? I think I am pretty serious. You just have no knowledge about jesters and stuff! Just wait til Eulenspiegel gets here! (That’s German for “Christmas talk” which begins right after Halloween in the U.S.). I bet I have changed a lot of minds by that time!!! Just in time for the elections!

Posted that for Paul & Squeek, but glad you felt moved to comment. I love bumper stickers and get lots of reactions – I’ve met many nice Berniebots as well as Trumpsters who approach me in parking lots. Great method of connection. My “artists are here to disturb the peace” (James Baldwin quote) garners attention as well as “practice random acts of kindness and senseless acts of beauty”
Why are those older black ladies giving me the evil eye? Caus SC is a plantation state like GA, AL, MS, LA. The older blacks have been sold down the river by their brothers and sisters who get more crumbs from the Big House and support the Demoncrats for personal gain.
However, good news is that young blacks are more savvy and have have thrown off their chains. They will not accept the status quo. Like my brothers Will and Mike who produce excellent videos on their LTMB YouTube channel.
The Fair Housing Act does not apply to roommates. Applying it to a roommate situation violates the First Amendment right to intimate-association. If the school sanctions a student for soliciting their request to live only with a particular type of roommate such action would be unconstitutional.
@Squeeky Fromm
It finally hit me. You never intended anyone to take you seriously.
Squeeky,
Racism is real. Ethically, we owe it to each other to stand against oppression. What we don’t owe anyone is lack of intellectual integrity. Identity politics has displaced intellectual integrity but it cannot erase real racism.
Independent Bob,
I agree. There are enough people to keep Hillary or Trump from being elected. I worry about the voting machine vote rigging though and see this as a very real problem. The oligarchy does not have an ethical brake on their behavior. They are doing and will do anything to get what they want. We must band together right now. Even if they fix the general election, we need to stand together against their plans to harm the majority of life on this earth.
Gee, I wonder what will happen when the Saxon begins to hate.
@Eggbert:
Amen!

Everyone ought focus on the response from Jill, she really has it right.
All particular groups are being played against each other for the benefit of the elite.
They know all our buttons and into non-stop pushing, of course the wannabe’s are helping.
We are all in the same boat, at risk, just where they want us.
I know I’m off topic but this is in regard to IsaacB “Normal” post, sorry folks.

Doesn’t this remind you of Hilly when she repeats I’ve been truthful to the FBI?
Once again sorry for getting off topic. hey I’m a graduate of the University of South Vietnam class of 66-67, majored in M-79.
How do you know what they think? They might just be old fashioned ladies that believe you shouldn’t plaster bumper stickers all over your car as if anyone cares about your opinions.
@Paul
@Squeek
Y’all will get a kick of this: I have bumper stickers on my car: Bernie Sanders 2016, BernieorBust, JillStein 2016, Hillary for Prison 2016, Pro Woman Anti Hillary. My “Lock Her Up” sticker should be arriving this week.
At any rate, I get very ugly glares from older black ladies. They actually think she cares about minorities!
Autumn – Geez, how big a bumper do you have or are you pasting the stickers all over the back and never expect to sell the car?
@slohrss29
Tim Black is truly amazing – like Bernie he has introduced me to a parallel universe where people who value integrity and are not afraid to discuss hard issues and have discussions with people from all walks of life are gathering. He does a noon day show, but his 9 PM EST show is the real draw as people from all over the nation call in. I have learned so much from Tim and the callers. It’s on YouTube and also FB…
If you want to see an interesting side to black racism watch Spike Lee’s School Daze.

You are right on about the “identity politics.” A few decades ago, there was a more common name for it:
RACE BAITING
Democrats were pretty good at it then, too. But, blacks finally got the right to vote sooo, they had to flip it. So my question is, why do so many college educated white people buy into it??? I have to think it is because too many of them are not involved in their daily life with the lower class black people. Because if they were, the whole idea that “White Privilege” is why life sucks for too many black people, would be laughable to them.
And FWIW, it’s not just racism that liberals define in such a way that it can’t apply to them and their policies. They do the same thing with fascism, or at least fascist behavior. My goodness, the SJWs shut down someone’s political rally, on the basis that Trump is a fascist, while ignoring the fact that they are the ones shutting down free speech. There, and on campuses, too. I guess Liberals can’t be fascists because they are sooo special!

Nice Vid Autumn, it’s amazing to see how people set up camp but won’t think. I’ll have to look out for more Tim Black. And as Jill points out, and we have to keep it in the forefront, racism benefits the duopoly. It’s just divide and conquer. If we all get a collective voice at some point, then you’ll see the really scary government stuff start.
Olly makes the good point too. I think going all the way back to the beginning of this season, Rand Paul lost out because he changed his game. If he would have kept hammering “constitution, constitution…” instead of trying to attack Trump in his home arena, things may have been different.
Everyone of these stories of racism keeps the game alive. If something happened to all the public money available in college-level education, I think things would settle out quickly. These strange majors only serve as profit centers based on government funding (kind of like ME wars…).

The argument that people of colour can’t be racist is itself racist.
Not the watered down, micro-aggressions meaning of racist, either, but a fits-to-a-“T” racist view.
Is there ONE candidate running that is even pretending they will respect the rule of law?
