AJC: Some Historically Black Colleges Are Graduating As Low As Five Percent Of Their Classes After Six Years

download-1There is a disturbing study by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution which found that there is a chronic problem at the nation’s historically black colleges and universities with shockingly low graduation rates.  The newspaper found that the six-year graduation rates at 20 schools were 20 percent or lower in 2015.  Some of the schools showed a rate of only five percent — raising serious questions over not just the performance of these schools but the treatment of their students.

While Spelman College in Atlanta shows a 76 percent graduation rate, other schools have shocking rates even after six years. These include Arkansas Baptist College (5%); Virginia University of Lynchburg (5%); Harris-Stow State University (7%); Concordia College Alabama (10%); Southwestern Christian College (10%); Texas College (13%); Paul Quinn College (13%); and Southern University New Orleans (14%).  Even Morehouse College struggles with 51% (down from 57% in 2010).

These figures would suggest that some of these schools have student bodies where 95 percent of the students will not receive a degree after six years of work.

      1. Don’t hold your breath. David doesn’t like the statements, but he can’t for the life of him explain why they are wrong. He might resort to calling them racisssst!, but he can’t address the truth or falseness, thereof. IMHO. (I hope I am wrong about him!)

        1. Your not wrong…he favors one or two sentence judgements and proclamations.
It’s uncommon to see him extend himself beyond that.

            1. Did you know that David Benson has been based just outside of Moscow for years?

              1. No, but I would not doubt it. In general, liberals here have a bad case of assertionitis. They are really good at throwing out canards, but are not able to explain anything. I am on Linda’s case over on the McCabe there, to pressure her into explaining, in her own words, how Paul Ryan is destroying Social Security. She has clammed up on that, and several other direct questions. Apparently, “anonymous” is their handler, and like in this thread, he supports the non-answering of simple questions by Liberals.

This is why it is the Democratic Left that runs speakers off campuses. They can’t support their numerous assertions. They are like a cult, which isolates its adherents from any outside influence.

                1. Thanks for all your smarts, Squeeky. I don’t know where all us law-abiding folk would be without your braveness.

                  1. No. But she may be a Correct The Record type stooge, or a sock puppet. Several commenters’ here do little but post assertions in large numbers, and assiduously stay away from any real discussion. My guess is, that people like “Ken” are seriously mentally ill, if they get gratification from that type of activity. Or, they could simply be getting paid to be stupid.

Who knows??? I never could figure out why “Inga” used to comment here. She was a real person, but her trips here were pretty much just to post pro-Democratic talking points. Several times I caught her providing links that said the opposite of what she thought they did. I don’t know. Maybe she was just lonely for attention. Maybe that is what motivates Ken, and few of the others.

“The heavy focus of public education today is primarily limited to standardized test performance and the proliferation of privatized charter schools complete with private contractors teaching the tests, usurping the authority at all levels from state, to local communities, to individual teacher’s lesson plans, to home schooling parents, largely replaced by instructional software programs.

The New World Order educational system of the twenty-first century has been ushered in by the likes of former President Bush’s No Child Left Behind program as a transparent corporatized privatization takeover. Bush’s younger brother Neil after being banned from the banking industry after his savings and loan scandal in the late 1980’s has been making a killing with his educational software company Ignite that promises higher test scores. Behind the double speak deceit of No Child Left Behind, Washington began blackmailing school districts across America with the threat of cutting off federal funds should their test scores fail to make the cut. ”

        1. Ah “education”.

          – Close the Dept. of Education.

          – Decertify ALL lazy, greedy, striking teacher comm-unions.

          – Keep “education” local.

        2. I heartily agree, billmcwilliams.

High test scores do not equal well-educated. The NCLB abomination is still affecting schools.

They should have left it alone, and actually addressed the issues at struggling schools instead of hamstringing everyone.

Thank you for the link. I look forward to reading the article!

    1. How ’bout here?

“It’s not nice to fool Mother Nature!”

      or

      “Let It Be.”

      or

“Black College” is a self-refuting oxymoron.

  1. “Affirmative Action Privilege” is the cure that is the curse.

Natural “stations” in society of necessity engender civility among society’s members.

The problem is unconstitutional communistic “social engineering”.

Forcing assembly, habitation, hiring, matriculation etc. is unconstitutional, false and non-viable.

    Americans are free.

Cream naturally rises to the top.

You can’t keep a good man down.

You can’t force an untalented man up.

  2. Uh, hum. Excuse me. “Crazy Abe” Lincoln would like to say a few words on the subject.

    Go ahead, Abe.

“If all earthly power were given me,” said Lincoln in a speech delivered in Peoria, Illinois, on October 16, 1854, “I should not know what to do, as to the existing institution [of slavery]. My first impulse would be to free all the slaves, and send them to Liberia, to their own native land.” After acknowledging that this plan’s “sudden execution is impossible,” he asked whether freed blacks should be made “politically and socially our equals?” “My own feelings will not admit of this,” he said, “and [even] if mine would, we well know that those of the great mass of white people will not … We can not, then, make them equals.”

  3. Clearly there is a problem in the admissions standards and curriculum.

Are these serious universities, whose goal is to provide quality degrees, or are they merely political institutions? These are the wages of valuing race above all else. They are known for being black colleges, which is political, rather than just for being great colleges.

Race should have nothing to do with your admissions. It should be a combination of not only academics, but other factors that are indicators for being a success later in life. For instance, there are many brilliant people who get straight As, but who cannot handle adversity, or being independent and getting a job. That is why extracurricular activities carry some weight, too.

All of those dropouts wasted money – their own, the schools, and taxpayers through student loans. And they wasted time.

A high school graduate should be academically prepared for either college, junior college, a trade school, or a job. Not everyone needs or is prepared for a 4 year degree.

We spend vast sums of taxpayer money, for kids to be passed who cannot read or write, reason, think critically, or even express themselves. Those kids have very poor prospects.

The far Left took over the entire education system, and it is now a mess. If their way was best, then it would have worked. We would rival Singapore in math and a high school graduate could make change. There would not be this exponential growth of homeschooling and charter schools if US public education was the best in the world, in every city of the US. Our school system is a mess, and universities are devolving into political madrassas for socialism and totalitarianism.

I rather like the return to a classical education that some homeschoolers are pursuing: https://welltrainedmind.com/a/classical-education/ “Classical homeschooling involves teaching based on the three stages of learning: the Grammar stage, the Logic stage, and the Rhetoric stage. The Grammar stage involves learning facts, memorization, and knowledge gathering. The Logic stage is when reasoning and logic begin to be applied to the knowledge. The Rhetoric stage completes the Trivium and is when the student learns the skills of wisdom and judgment.”

“A classical education is more than simply a pattern of learning, though. Classical education is language-focused; learning is accomplished through words, written and spoken, rather than through images (pictures, videos, and television).

Why is this important? Language-learning and image-learning require very different habits of thought. Language requires the mind to work harder; in reading, the brain is forced to translate a symbol (words on the page) into a concept. Images, such as those on videos and television, allow the mind to be passive. In front of a video screen, the brain can “sit back” and relax; faced with the written page, the mind is required to roll its sleeves up and get back to work.

A classical education, then, has two important aspects. It is language-focused. And it follows a specific three-part pattern: the mind must be first supplied with facts and images, then given the logical tools for organization of facts, and finally equipped to express conclusions.”

Nowadays, there are myriad resources for homeschoolers that can also help kids in conventional education. I routinely buy books from homeschooler websites and do extra work with my kid over school breaks and on weekends. Whatever a parent identifies as a weakness, there is a resource for that. But it’s not going to just appear on your doorstep by osmosis. You have to actually go looking, and then either buy it or check it out at a library.

These poorly educated kids growing up into poorly educated adults dropping out of substandard colleges, not competitive in the workplace and not prepared to succeed, are heartbreaking. Contrary to the Victim Profiteers, this is not any white man’s fault, or the patriarchy, or oligarchs, or Russia, or a Right Wing Conspiracy to keep a man down. No. This is what happens when too many women have kid after kid out of wedlock, with absentee dads, and get caught in a cycle of poverty, and the public education system is an abysmal failure, jobs flee the community from violence and blight, and there’s no help at home on homework, and no guidance on your life, and politics telling you that there’s nothing you can do to improve your prospects, and a glossy college brochure of false promises.

This is preventable. A 95% college dropout rate is preventable. De-politicize the education system. Educate minds from the time they are precious, innocent little sponges. Teach them how to think. Prepare them for life, not jail or failure.

  4. Oh, and I had another thought! Maybe this low graduation rate should be given a less judgemental name, a name less stigmatizing. You know, kind of like how we call whorish, mega-b*st*rd producing, welfare sucking black behavior, black girl magic . . .

Sooo, what can we call this kind of dumb, stupid low-college-graduating, failure that makes it seem less Epic Fail-y and stupid???

Hmmm. . . Black collar choices??? You know, like blue collar work. Black collar choices are the choices to quit college, and enter the exciting, productive, and financially rewarding fields of fast food work, janitorial floor sweeping, and bed pan cleaning at nursing homes!

Or, how about calling it the Dashiki Option! You know, black kids are heroically eschewing to enter upon some culturally White career path, in order to get in touch with their Inner African!

I have given you two options. I would love to hear more.

  5. 6 years of full-time studies ? Or six years whether they’re full-time or taking one night course at a time? That would have the potential to seriously distort statistics for schools with a large percentage of non-traditional students.

  6. If only Beverly Hall was still around she could take care of this. Maybe Michelle Rhee is available?

  7. Would love to see the math on the student loan defaults from these “universities.”

  8. Maybe they stay to long in their safe space and not long enough at their studies.

  9. Michael A. You’re kind of responsibility just doesn’t seem to make it in this contemporary world we live in.

  10. IF those schools were graduating unfit students then there were be criticism of that statistic. So. The schools are being honest.

    1. Sir, Honest? really… Were the schools honest they would set academic standards, such as a minimum GPA, and release those that do not attain, making the seat available for someone who can/will. To take a student’s money for 6 years, and then say well you didn’t quite make it is disingenuous at best, and most certainly not honest.

  11. I don’t believe anything I read written by the White Devil in the White Man’s newspaper. It’s his fault the Black Man can’t read or graduate from college.

    1. Squeeky, thanks for that article. Very informative! What strikes me is that you have to read 2/3 into it before the author discusses the most obvious reason for familial incarceration: genetic predisposition. And the reported claim that parenting doesn’t count for much except in extreme cases is not supported by statistics nationwide. Young uneducated single moms left behind to deal with the children, unequipped and unprepared. Tragic that so many of these men didn’t get exposed to the value of education, hard work and keeping to the straight and narrow until they were incarcerated. Some good news in there, particularly the work of the Goodmans.

  12. Hey Enigma,
Please post a list of black Americans who pulled up stakes and move back to Swaziland since black independence from colonial rule. ………….crickets…………………

Martha Leah Nangalama is a black Canadian woman (like, real African black) who blames Africa’s modern failures since black independence squarely on black African rulers. Turns out these black rulers simply swapped white racism for black authoritarianism, says Martha.

Martha states recently deposed Zimbabwe Dictator Mugabe owned a sweet little 25 bedroom palace on 44 acres, and he amassed almost $2B in foreign real estate. Nice work if you can get it! Meanwhile his fellow Zimbabweans eat dirt…

Africans are now clamoring for the return of colonial rule! So says Martha, not me!

  13. Thinking back I can see up to eight years on a work a year study a year pay for it yourself or if a break for military service to get GI Bill status occurred…. That alone would negate the need for heavy student loan debts. But I also see where admission into schools like Berkeley are entirely race based and slots that could have gone to the Asian Community are given to another which garners 50% drop out in the first year. I did two then did the military then took courses for through various programs for about ten years to get a Bachelors and six additional to get a Masters. One major two minors. Zero debt and while not much was hard sciiences none of it was underwater basket weaving or sociology.

Looking back i chose to get a life … meaning some experience… before continuing as by 20 i had zero interest in anything. That changed and largely due to the different schools and instructors as I learn to not take courses from the duds.

My daughter on the other hand finished high school at 15 1/2 bachelors at 18 abut the time her contemporaries were finishing up tthe summer after high scool senior year and now has a two
Doctorates one in Medicine and one as a pShrink. However she has horrible bed side manner so go figure. She worked her way through finishing at 25 or 26 teaching and playing piano and flute, jobs on campus and scholarships.

I would hate to attempt that at todays prices. I started it woas $1200 a year including books, fees, room and board and two round trip bus rides half way across the nation. I doubt that would buy dust covers on the books these days.

Back to the subject at hand there is a marked drop in qualty and one might as well say to get a 1960’s highs school education one has to attend at least Junior ‘College and a then Bachelors is prorbably a Masters these days. We had no social promotions and you didn’t get to go to Harvard or Suntan U with less than B Grades.

Teaching on the other hand has held rock steady with most teachers coming from the bottom one fifth of their high school classes. Sociology and a flurry of stuff studies such as found at schools like Evergreen in Washington State do not rate much in the way of paychecks.

By the time i retired for good I could make more money as a deck hand on a freighter or tanker than by working in any of my degree fields So too late learned to value real sciences and math, economics etc.

    But .. education never stops.

    1. Michael Aarethun – I just want you to know that holding your breath is the key to underwater basketweaving. 🙂

  14. What do you expect??? Assuming the black kids are 20 years old, that means they were born in 1997. What was the black illegitimate birth rate in 1997? Here, lets look at the chart!

    https://thesocietypages.org/graphicsociology/files/2010/10/maritaldecline.jpg

Hmmm. About 70%. Sooo 7 out of 10 black kids have a baby daddy instead of a father, and we wonder why the little heathens can’t cut college. Worse now, where the number is 77%, or like in Minneapolis where it is 88%.

There are other factors, like teachers passing them when they become one year older, rather they can do the work or not. I mean if you start failing the stupid ones, and 95% of the stupid ones are black, then that must be racissst! And there is the whole “acting white” thing where the savage black kids intimidate the black kids that want to get an education. That is what school vouchers are really about. Letting Black parents get their Black kids away from the N-word kids. Nobody wants to say it, but that is what it is. Let your Black kid go to a school where they get teased and beat up by the N-word kids for wanting to get an education and most of them will just give up.

Family life among blacks is sooo horrible that any gains the kids make in Head Start, are lost within a few years. In some schools in Baltimore, there is not one single black kid who is proficient in either English or Math.

Yet, Democrats insist that “families come in all shapes and sizes”. But the ones that come in the size of one single black mother, and in the shape of low black culture, those families seem to not work out so well.

    1. Yep and he’s been doing it since the end of the civil war… don’t ask me to prove that I really can’t understand the words that’s a fact jack but I heard it somewhere …. .or something.

  15. It’s pretty alarming.
That said – & I really hate to make a wisecrack, but can’t resist – how long do you think it will be that we start hearing from the Left that its Trump’s fault!
No doubt that will be response to citing facts such as lowest blk. unemployment, more jobs, higher wages, tax reform leave’g more $ in employee’s pkt,…

  16. “. . . raising serious questions over not just the performance of these schools but the treatment of their students.”

Yes, it must be something about the way they are treating their students.

Or maybe it’s the students themselves? How high or low are the entry requirements for HBC’s?

Anyway, it raises a lot potential questions. Need more information.

    1. If you can stay awake during one class out of each school year you qualify to university.

Who gets short changed when all the freshman slots are filled each year with future 50% drop outs? In California it’s the Asian community kids who are B average or above and more often 3.8 to 4.0 What probably saved a lot of them is the government student loan program as the schools value money above all else. and education or ability as nought to do with it.
