Temple University Refuses To Fire Professor Dumped By CNN For Anti-Israel Comments

Temple University professor and CNN contributor Marc Lamont Hill caused a stir after he spoke before the United Nations and made pro-Palestinian statements that critics claimed were thinly veiled calls for the elimination of Israel.  CNN promptly fired Hill and many at Temple University demanded that the media studies professor also be fired.  Temple correctly stood firm on the free speech rights of faculty to speak out on such important but controversial issues. While disassociating itself from the merits of the commentary, the university stated that “we acknowledge that he has a constitutionally protected right to express his opinion as a private citizen.”

We have been discussing the often inconsistent approach taken to controversial statements or postings of students and faculty at our universities and colleges, including here and here and here. I have previously written about concerns that public employees are increasingly being disciplined for actions in their private lives or views or associations outside of work. We have previously seen teachers (herehereherehereherehereherehereherehereherehere, here) students (herehere and here) and other public employees (here and here and here) fired for their private speech or conduct, including school employees fired for posing in magazines (here), appearing on television shows in bikinis (here), or having a prior career in the adult entertainment industry (here).  This includes Halloween costume controversies.

In this case, Hill spoke at a meeting of the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People in observance of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People. He called the Israeli government of “normalizing settler colonialism” and called for a “free Palestine from the river to the sea.” That last remark was denounced as a type of dog whistle for the elimination of the States of Israel.  He also at one point poured himself from water and explained that he just got off a plane to Palestine and that “I was boycotting the Israeli water so I was unable to quench my thirst.”  He also said somewhat cryptically “We must prioritize peace, but we must not romanticize or fetishize it.”

He later defended his remarks by insisting that “In my speech, I talked about the need to return to the pre-1967 borders, to give full rights to Palestinian citizens of Israel, and to allow right of return. No part of this is a call to destroy Israel. It’s absurd on its face.”

Not so for CNN which promptly fired him.

Temple refused calls to do so.  That is the correct decision.  This is not about the merits of Hill’s statements — any more than it is about the merits of the criticism of those remarks.  Hill was exercising his free speech rights outside of his employment with Temple.  Regardless of how one may feel about his views, academics are allowed to hold opposing views on Israel.  If not, what is the standard to be applied to academics in the exercise of free speech?

Here is his speech that caused the turmoil:

  1. Bigots and anti Semitic people people can’t teach at Universities . It outrageous that Temple University defends this terrible person.
Demand that Lamont will be fired!

keep an eye on the “russian bot” media folks it may be the only place you can actually get anything critical of the US before long, the American mass media is going deep and hard into self censorship now!

  3. Yes, hate speech such as Marc Hill’s is protected speech in the US. Even Hill’s hate speech in this case is commonly protected, where he used language that clearly conveyed his position that Israel should be eliminated from the planet by any means necessary. The SCOTUS has repeatedly ruled that hate speech is protected under the First Amendment, except where such speech is directed to inciting imminent lawless action and is likely to incite or produce such action. Of course, allowing college instructors like Hill to make hate speeches against Jews and Israel normalizes anti-Semitism, and ultimately promotes more hate speech and violence against Jews. But that normalization is an express objective of the leftist agenda which predominates college campuses today and is consistent with the political ideologies of those individuals that lead college administrations.

  4. this story is not important. cnn stinks, it still does, the guy is a fool, but Temple wisely did not fire the loser, universities are Augean stables of cognitive filth, and yet political speech even stupid political speech should be tolerated.

As for the Israelis and Pals, I have spent a lot of time criticizing Israelis in my life and mostly it’s a waste of time. I’m not doing it anymore. You guys can try and sort their problems out for them and waste a lot of breath on UN resolutions and all that, but really it’s quite simple. 50, 70, 100 years ago the relative merits are irrelevant to the current outcomes. Only today matters. Today the Israelis are stronger and more unified and they will solve the problem as best they can and not wait on the Palestinians to suddenly get cooperative. That thing will just go sideways and maybe some day the Pals will wake up and cut the haggling and make a deal that will be good for their whole people and not just their tribal leadership stratum. But of course one should not wait for that in any other place in the Arab world either.

However I have seen that a lot of Arab people in the US get along with Jews just fine. And other folks too. And there’s a large number of Arabs inside Israel and in local area who benefit greatly from the law and order of the Israeli state and engage in legit jobs and commerce and all that boring stuff that actually makes life go forward. Then there are the rock chuckers and the rocket launchers who are not doing anything very constructive. a big contrast.

The thing I have noticed about a lot of erstwhile leftists of today, is they’re conflict junkies, they always are looking for a way to put somebody with money and authority down, and the white and closer they are to “The West” the better. Well, the Israelis are whiter and closer to the west for sure.
So they are hated more than the Arabs by the American left even the lilly white and often jewish left.
Figure that one out. And the Israelis got law order and money and authority so these same people like to put them down. Personally, I admire prosperous and hard working peoples and as I get older there seems little point in degrading them. But as I get older I see a lot more point in degrading unruly and habitually lazy and violent peoples. I however don’t believe in equality nonsense so my mind is free to move untrammeled by false ideological binds even those I have grown up with or cherished in the past.

Now, this is not really a big story. I think the big story is coming here in the US. In my gut i just feel like something is building and DJT is going to fire back somehow at the witch-hunt, in a way that will be very remarkable. The G20 meeting is a pause.

  5. HOMOGENEOUS ORIGINAL INTENT

“The influx of foreigners must, therefore, tend to produce a heterogeneous compound; to change and corrupt the national spirit; to complicate and confound public opinion; to introduce foreign propensities. In the composition of society, the harmony of the ingredients is all-important, and whatever tends to a discordant intermixture must have an injurious tendency.”

“If all earthly power were given me,” said Lincoln in a speech delivered in Peoria, Illinois, on October 16, 1854, “I should not know what to do, as to the existing institution [of slavery]. My first impulse would be to free all the slaves, and send them to Liberia, to their own native land.” After acknowledging that this plan’s “sudden execution is impossible,” he asked whether freed blacks should be made “politically and socially our equals?” “My own feelings will not admit of this,” he said, “and [even] if mine would, we well know that those of the great mass of white people will not … We can not, then, make them equals.”

  6. Professor Hill’s remarks are largely true on the surface but fail to acknowledge the toxic leadership of former Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat. Arafat’s insistence on “The Right To Return” squandered many opportunities for peace ‘before’ Israeli settlers had colonized the West Bank.

Professor Hill appears young enough to have no first-hand recollection of Arafat’s long presence on the world stage. Instead, Professor Hill, and people under 50, are more familiar with Israeli policies of the last 20 years. To a younger generation, Israel could easily be perceived as an occupying power imposing an apartheid system on West Bank Palestinians.

Personally I believe the time has passed when Israel and the West Bank can be neatly divided into two different states. Israeli land grabs, by ultra orthodox settlers, have created a reality on the ground where any West Bank state would look like Swiss cheese on the map. Israel deliberately sought this reality by encouraging West Bank settlements in defiance of the world community.

Therefore I propose a ‘One-State’ Solution. The state would be known as ‘Palestine’, which has always been the geographic designation of that area. ‘Israel’ would still exist as the coastal region of Palestine. Jerusalem, of course, would be the capitol. The Israeli parliament would then be expanded to include Palestinian representatives from the West Bank.

The Palestinians would relinquish their rights to pre-1948 property claims in what is currently Israel. Yet they would have the legal right to live anywhere in the new state. The legality of West Bank claims (by Israeli settlers) would be subject to review by an international tribunal. If Palestinians can prove, through titles and documentation, that land was seized from them, they should either be compensated or have their property returned.

This One-State Solution would, no doubt, create endless complications. Jews could become a minority in the new Palestine. But I at this point any Two-State Solution would be equally as complicated. What’s more, the current reality is not sustainable. Palestine is simply too small and interconnected to be neatly divided. And one should note that Israel draws it drinking water from aquifers on what is now The West Bank.

        1. True. No better or worse of an idea than all the others. I keep picturing Rhode Island with all the surrounding states wanting them destroyed; pushed into the ocean. How long would that last?

        2. Hey PH–Regarding your “one state solution” with the new entity to be called “Palestine”, I wish to offer a solution to the ongoing CIVIL WAR between democrats and republicans in the U.S. Here is my solution:

The United States will now become but one state. There will no longer be 50 states. This one state will be called Native America, and it will be governed by a Native American Council. There will no longer be a need for the democrat or republican political parties. With this solution, everyone will now live in peace. Does this sound dopey? No more dopey than your solution for the Israel-Palestinian situation!

          1. Lawrence, ‘what tribes’ would compose this Native American Council? And would tribes with only a thousand members have the same representation as tribes with 5,000 members?

And if, as I suspect, you’re only being sarcastic, then tell me how long the status quo in Israel can continue?

            1. ” …how long the status quo in Israel can continue?”

How long was the war against Japan (WW2) going to last. The answer was until Japan gave up. In the case of Israel the status quo of terror and poor maintainance of Arab run property will continue until the leadership and the people of Gaza and the West Bank give up on the idea of pushing Israel into the sea.

Now I will take you back in history. How long and how many wars would be fought until the Peloponnesian War ended? Until victory.

How long and how many wars did it take for the Punic War to end? Until victory.

How long and how many wars did it take for the Great War (WW1 and WW2) to end? Until victory.

              1. Allan, as usual your comments here are detached from any reality outside the right-wing bubble.

                1. Peter, how do you feel about Bette Midler hoping for Trumps family to hang?

                  https://www.breitbart.com/entertainment/2018/11/30/bette-midler-fantasizes-trump-and-family-hanged-high/

It used to be that kind of remark would get a visit from the secret service. But, I somehow doubt they have time to check on Bette Midler and all the other loudmouths in Hollywood.

But hey, If people like Bette Midler wants to elicit that kind of talk in return, maybe she should get it. I won’t be the one to talk that way.

But, I wonder, do you want to see Trump and his family hung? Maybe we should saying such things. I will ponder that. I also wonder why twitter doesnt ban Bette Midler ?

twitter, what a biased left wing extremist hate website!

Civil war, seems like it inches forward every day. Ya know, I know some people who saw the last civil war in the western world, in the Balkans. Civil war in the modern era is a real bitch especially for people who live in big cities who can’t get easy resupply of food, and don’t have much experience with guns.

which side does that sound like to you? if it’s civil war, sooner the better. january is a good time as any

                  1. Kurtz, is there some rule somewhere saying that anyone who expresses liberal political views has to support any statement by anyone identified as ‘liberal’..?????

This is another example of how right-wing media dumbs-down its consumers. The fact that you think I should have to respond to this shows that right-ring media has dumbed-you-down.

                    1. i only asked. if you condemn her hateful rhetoric than say so.

I am not a big consumer of your socalled right wing media but i do like brietbart

now do you reject the hateful extremist rhetoric of bette midler or not?

she is free to say what she say under 1st amendment law i just want to know whether the average liberal is ready to take it to that level. i mean that kind of reminds me of Louis Beam’s “hit list” from the 80s a well known screed of recommended victims for “antigovernment extremists”

i just want to know, does the average liberal stand with outrageous hollywood actresses calling for assassinations ?

                    2. Kurtz, last I heard, Bette Midler lived in New York and was going to appear in a revival of “Hello Dolly”. One could hardly refer to her as ‘Hollywood Establishment’.

                    3. The simple answer to the question posed to you by Kurtz about Bette Midler’s statement ” hoping for Trumps family to hang” is that Bette Midler’s statement was dumb or that you agree with her. It is as simple as that unless one is too dull witted to figure it out.

                2. It is clear that your claims aren’t valid for if they were you would be providing evidence. Absent knowledge or evidence you merely repeat your meme demonstrating a very dull intellect.

            2. then tell me how long the status quo in Israel can continue?

Israel isn’t suffering any deterioration in it’s economic, politico-military, or demographic position. Again, the position of the Arab parties is that the Jews must bend their neck for the axe. No one does that willingly and the Arabs have never in the last century in a position to coerce the Jews to do that. Your ‘solution’ doesn’t address any real problems and it would cost the part with the upper hand dearly. We get to see how your mind works when you haven’t received the day’s talking points: not very well.

              1. Tabby, Professor Hill of Temple is not some aberration. Outside of Trumpland, Israel is being increasingly viewed as a rogue nation. Even my Jewish nieces are skeptical of Israel. Most millennials are! Only Trumpers think that Israel is right no matter what.

                1. actually the Palestinian cause has lost some strength in some corners in Europe. And Israel has gained ground in its reputation inside Europe

                  https://www.jta.org/2018/11/20/news-opinion/support-israel-among-european-jewish-leaders-survey-finds

And, in some unexpected places. the ascendant populist parties such as orban’s and FN, actually embrace the right of Israel to exist as ethnostate, which they claim in turn for their own peoples

the current populist concerns in europe no longer have to do say with Jewish commissars; that was a problem from a century ago. now it’s migrant invasion but for them, from the middle east and north africa

Israel shows a way to how a country can maintain a strong border, and we take notice! they’re to be applauded for strength

                  https://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/background-and-overview-of-israel-s-security-fence

all that said, the Palestinians have a right to exist too, and a measure of autonomy which is commensurate with them living peacefully, that’s how i would see it as an outsider. but if they want perpetual war then I’m not going to be the one to tell the Israels what to do!

Jewish people in America are often very confused; on the one hand they’ve been behind all these other “liberations movements” for the past 100 years (inspired by the commissars perhaps) and yet they are perplexed by the Biblical tribalism of their Israeli cousins.

Well, I think it’s a good thing to talk about it. it may help white american gentiles grow up some and learn to think as a tribe too.

let’s live in peace but not if it means we have to go extinct. then forget about the peace, let’s go out with a bang

                  1. Kurtz, I just read an article noting that opinion polls on Israel can be misleading. People like me might support Israel’s right to exist, but that doesn’t mean we totally back Israel’s current leadership. It’s not like you have to ‘blindly support’ or be ‘completely hostile’. There are many in-betweens.

                    1. i certainly agree with all of that. polls can be wrong and there is a continuum of reasonable opinion on the subject

                  2. The right of the Arabs on the West Bank and Gaza to ‘exist’ has never been at issue. It has their right to be free of security controls which contain their misbehavior and free of retaliatory strikes in response to their misbehavior. If they’d like to be free of security controls or retaliatory strike they can quit being violent meatheads. Which is what they refuse to do under any circumstances.

                  3. Jewish people in America are often very confused; on the one hand they’ve been behind all these other “liberations movements” for the past 100 years

Yeah. John Reed, Lincoln Steffens, Anna Louise Strong, Scott Nearling, Lillian Hellman, Corliss Lamont, and Jessica Mitford. Bunch o’ Yids.

                2. Outside of Trumpland, Israel is being increasingly viewed as a rogue nation.

That moral idiots abound is of no interest to me. It doesn’t surprise me that they’re to be found in your family.

                3. Peter, no country is right all the time, but Israel is right most of the time. Some of their errors even benefit their enemies. With ~150,000 missles aimed at its core and able to hit anywhere in Israel in a few minutes they are in a stratigically bad position. One can walk through the center of Israel in a matter of a few hours.

You seem to have ideas that run amok and aren’t well thought out. I don’t think a true two state solution will be found but like Israel does today they will likely have some type of two state solution with local sovereignty on portions of the west bank.

Look at the Hamas Charter. Hamas governs Gaza. How do you suggest this be addressed?

Just one small portion of the Hamas Charter follows.

“The prophet, prayer and peace be upon him, said:

The time will not come until Muslims will fight the Jews (and kill them); until the Jews hide behind rocks and trees, which will cry: O Muslim! there is a Jew hiding behind me, come on and kill him!”

    1. Israel is the leader in water conservation and also has desalination plants. They are so successful at it that water prices are not high and they are able to export water to Jordan and Gaza.

I wouldn’t dictate to the Israeli’s what they require for security. Don’t forget no one reimbursed the ~700,000 Jews forced, under the threat of death, out of their homes in other areas of the Middle East without compensation. We seem only to talk about the Arabs that left Israel voluntarily and the lands that were captured after war. The freest Arabs that are not part of the Arab elite are freer in Israeli controlled areas than any other area.

The numbers of Arabs and Jews that left their homes is close to equal. Israel absorbed the Jews. The much larger Arab lands placed their people into camps surrounded by barbed wire. There were much larger transfers of population around the world. Just look at India and Pakistan where many more people became refugees. Today they are not considered refugees but the Palestinians still are for no rational reason.

      1. its a good point,. when Pontic Greeks were brutally and forcibly ejected out of Turkey, the Greeks let them back in and absorbed them. Whereas, adjacent Arab nations instead wanted to keep a lot of them in camps. This was partly because they saw them not as co-ethnics but rather a convenient thorn in the Israelis’ sides that they should wisely hold in place and not alleviate their suffering.

The Arabs are always willing to take huge casualties. they are very fecund. That is a continuous them going all the way back with them. Islam makes sure that the system stays in place. So whatever nonsense the feminists say, the patriarchy is a huge advantage for Arabs, if only demographically. The irony is that birth control etc has tapered off their population growth in some places where one might not expect it such as a Iran which had a big reduction in rate of growth widely publicized around 2012. Then, the Mullahs finally noticed and decided to try and reverse that.
        https://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/apr/15/iran-ban-vasectomies-birthrate

you see the pointy headed social studies geeks have actually been looking very closely at Arab population trends and so forth very carefully for many decades. They are not entirely useless; they don’t just pump out feckless surveys of transgender issues, they have actually measured some pretty important factors and trends.

what are the trends facing white guys in America? I think about his because, well, I’m a white guy in america.

white Americans face a problematic demographic situation: low fertility and foreign invasion. To make matters worse family formation is low, with growth in wages very weak until DJT’s term recently; and a poisonous toxic anti-male culture bred into young women over decades has left white men deciding it’s better to play video games and look at porn and take it easy, then be stupid like their fathers, work hard for the family and a lazy wife who will cheat as much as she likes, spend too much money, maybe work or maybe not, if she does keep most of it, hang around until she’s ready to divorce and then take half in two decades. (how many times I have heard this story from men? a lot it’s really sad and pathetic. I wonder if there ever has been a lazier, nastier, more spoiled and grasping generation of women than what we have now., but Im sure the next crop will be even worse) So why should the young white boys form families. They wont wear the pants; they won’t make enough money; they will experience getting “cut off” if they don’t obey, they will be expected to work AND do the dishes and and change the diapers while mom swills chardonnay on the couch complaining about patriarchy. En route to her retirement plan being funded by divorce. Well, not all women are that bad, just a lot! Especially the university girls. LOL. Probably the same ones in the suburbs who couldn’t bring themselves to vote for Hillary but just voted blue after a red turnout 2 years ago, characteristic of their lack of loyalty, staying power, and team spirit. Never a more disloyal, selfish generation of lazy white women than the ones we have today. I hope the good women will understand me when I say this and only wear the shoe if it fits.

See that’s a lot of tail end baby boomers and gen x white people there. The men got screwed hard due to the fulfillment of trends allowed to take hold by the ww2 and baby boom generation and mostly just the worst most toxic social idea ever: feminism.

The irrevocable result of the white race embracing feminism and sexual libertinage and endless false notions of equality will simply be a precipitous demographic collapse within 20-50 years. It’s underway, but will get worse and maybe worse faster than anticipated.

DJT is actually just a last gasp of the white man. the white hating leftists can all cheer but the post-European dominated world you inherit without us will be one in which you become slaves of a far crueler master, the Chinese. Get ready for it; I hope you like it. I can live with Chinese just fine. They suit my preferences just as well as any other gaggle of foreigners. But it will come only slowly and once the dam bursts and the DJT is removed and the trade war ends with total capitulation to the Chicom leadership. Maybe not in one year but soon enough. And by degrees perhaps. Degrees over which I age and likely the illusion will only be fully unmasked once I am dead. Thank God my kids have already seen the writing on the wall and are adjusting. But like Daniel I say, the near future multicultural America with whites crammed down into a rump minority, will be an untenable social-political structure. How it fails I do not know, what comes I dont know. But it won’t be anything like what we have now. Again the Artificial general intelligence golem may just wipe us all off the map in a way we can’t even imagine. But for now my gut says that the dream means this: mene, mene, tekel, upharsin. you have been measured and found wanting. Cyrus is coming for you and you will be reduced.

        1. The Arabs are always willing to take huge casualties. they are very fecund.

Total fertility rates of Arab countries vary geographically between 1.7 and 4.4 children per woman per lifetime. Egypt’s is currently 3.3 and has fallen by 1/2 since 1960. Israel’s is 3.1 per 100,000 and has fallen by about 20% since 1960.

    2. “Instead, Professor Hill, and people under 50, are more familiar with Israeli policies of the last 20 years. To a younger generation, Israel could easily be perceived as an occupying power imposing an apartheid system on West Bank Palestinians.”

Yes because it’s a demographics game. The poorer and more fecund peoples want to take from the less fertile and more productive ones. You’ll notice that wealth tracks with lower fertility and IQ. You can go read up on why from the anthropologists, but I don’t need to be one myself to see the obvious.

This is a human group dynamic and it plays out all over. Including even in China where the huge Han population is waning and they’re worried about the more fertile Muslim Uighurs to the west. Well, trust me, the Chinese will massage the problem with a carrot in one hand, and beat the hell out of the Uighurs with a stick in the other. Because they are Chinese and they are smart and they are “Racist” and they could care less about our Western standards of morality mostly they focus on survival and success and whatever it takes to make it happen.

How it will play out in the US? It’s far more complicated than it seems. It seems like the Dems are signing up the lower IQ lower productivity higher fertility peoples in the USA and bringing in more migrants to win a long term demographics game. The Republicans can see it and are wisely fighting mass migration. But the Dem leadership can be cashiered very quickly if it gets out of hand. They’ve got a tiger by the tail. So they should be careful.

Republicans are in a pickle. They better study the Israelis methods very closely and think of how solutions can be implemented here, because the situation is more analogous than anybody would like to admit.

Trade is an even more imminent disaster. The trade war was long overdue. Americans should thank highly competent genius POTUS Donald J Trump for finally taking on the Chicom trade monster which holds its own domestic market hostage, pimps them out as cheap labor, restricts them from buying foreign goods, and steals from all foreign nations with glee. Somebody needed to stand up to the PRC and if it wasn’t going to be American than it would be nobody. And bless Steve Bannon for playing Cassandra on this.

In 20-50 years the Chicoms might be decided the solutions to all our problems for us like it or not especially if they get to general AI first and they are pushing hard. These are interesting times. DJT is a wise leader and the Democrats are the bane of America’s future for weakening him at a time when our national existence and future is far more precariously poised than people see or admit.

    3. ” Israel could easily be perceived as an occupying power imposing an apartheid system on West Bank Palestinians…” Only by an uneducated or incorrectly ‘educated’ younger generation.
