The Fourth is one of my favorite holidays as a time when citizens should put aside our differences and focus on the freedoms that unite us. The American Republic is still a work in progress, a constitutional system that must be renewed by each generation. This holiday unfortunately shows how our differences threaten to overwhelm our common article of faith in this representative democracy. The Nike controversy shows how our differences are now overwhelming our core shared values, including the very symbol of this nation. Nevertheless, many of us will join today to celebrate these United States and its history and values. My family will celebrate with a cookout and, of course, fireworks.
The Betsy Ross flag is a wonderful symbol for this day. She has long personified the considerable contribution of women to our Revolution. Women made huge sacrifices to gather material for the Revolutionary cause from saltpeter to clothes to lead. Ross made uniforms, tents, and flags for the Revolution from her upholstery shop in Philadelphia. Her iconic flag remains a symbol of a struggle for freedom around core values that still define our nation.
Happy Fourth everyone.

It’s a military industrial complex until there is a crisis, then it becomes the arsenal of democracy.
IB,
“Crazy Abe” Lincoln violated and nullified the Constitution by denying legal and constitutional secession and initiating the Northern War of Aggression. The American Founders’ thesis on war was to avoid foreign entanglements and “…provide for the common DEFENCE…”
NO NATION IN HISTORY ENDED SLAVERY WITH WAR.
Lincoln was a psychotic with homosexual tendencies who was corruptly ensconced as president with 39.8% of the vote and martyred by the “deep deep state” of bankers/industrialists/politicians when his “job” was done and his usefulness expired.
Lincoln eliminated “classes” paving the way for the Progressives (progressing to communism), Roosevelt and finally Lyndon Johnson to eliminate the rights, freedoms, privileges and immunities of Americans and to forcibly impose the principles of communism on America.

Its raining hard in our area and it is forecasted to continue including nearby DCA, which means we are not going to see this wonderful attempt by Trump to make Americans feel great again about our country.

Military-Industrial Complex Speech, Dwight D. Eisenhower, 1961
https://avalon.law.yale.edu/20th_century/eisenhower001.asp
I’d a rate Eisenhower as one of our better presidents, in the top third of the historical “presidential pack”.
When he gave that speech nearly 60 years ago, defense spending was well over 50% of the U.S. budget. Today, it’s probably about 20%. Also, the number and influence of lobbyists, and the role of Megabucks in politics, etc. are far bigger issues than they were 60 years ago.
I think if Ike were to give a similar speech today, he’d probably include a warning like the one back then, “watch out for the military- industrial lobbyists”.
But the entire situation is so much different c.60 years later that he’d probably look at where the percentage of federal spending goes and give far different warning about federal spending in general and lobbyists.
https://images.app.goo.gl/R3EJAHyvV79Jjej86
It’s hard to believe that defense spending was 55% of the U.S. budget in 1960.
Vs.
about 20% today. I’d guess that we probably had close to 3,000,000 active duty military personell in a population of about 160 million.
Today, there are about 1,500,000 active duty military in a country that has about 320,000,000.
There is likely waste/ inefficiencies that need to be addressed in the area of military spending. But those who think that “cutting defense spending” is going to have a major impact on the budget, when that share of the budget has become a much smaller share of the budget, are not being realistic.
Tom Nash, you really, really NEED to read:
“Crimes and Cover-Ups in American Politics – The History They Didn’t Teach You in School”
– Donald Jeffries.
I think we’ve been over this before, George…..sorry, but I can’t dismiss the Mount Everest stack of evidence against Oswald.
Facts? We don’t need no stinking facts!
http://22november1963.org.uk/oswald-fingerprint-palmprint-evidence
speaking of stacks
Americans were taxed at a disproportionately higher rate when Eisenhower made his speech, mostly for defense spending, which has fallen to 20% of the Federal budget.
If President Eisenhower had a crystal ball at his disposal, he’s have warned us about Kennedy and Johnson’s crippling insecurities which cost us $25.4 billion in 1960s dollars ($153 billion in today’s dollars) for Project Apollo and 55,000 young American lives in LBJ’s pecker contest in Vietnam.
While, if Nixon had been elected in 1960, the same unimaginative, uncharismatic guy every right-thinking liberal liked to crap on would probably have insisted the space program stuck to things like getting us overhead photographs of Russia ad China with a minimum of fuss and muss.
The real cost- drivers of the exploding federal budget have been the “entitlement” programs that are have been on “autopilot” for decades.
And continue to be on autopilot. I see from watching the Democratic debates that the answer to these cost drivers is more entitlement programs, or the expansion of existing ones.
Seriously? You haven’t noticed that all the constitutional rights, freedoms, privileges and immunities of Americans, including their English
language, their security “…in their persons, houses, papers, and effects…” and their national borders are gone?
Let’s see, an unconstitutional invasion of foreign parasites seeking “alms for the poor” from American taxpayers, mass importation of
communist (i.e. democrat) voters, free medical care for illegal alien foreign invaders, affirmative action, quotas, welfare, food stamps, rent
control, social services, forced busing, minimum wage, utility subsidies, WIC, TANF, HAMP, HARP, Education, Labor, Obamacare,
Obamaphones, Social Security, Social Security Disability, Medicare, Medicaid, MediCal, “Fair Housing,” laws, “Non-Discrimination” laws,
etc., etc., etc., and actual Americans can find something to celebrate?
“Crazy Abe” Lincoln, Comrade Franklin Roosevelt, Lyndon “$22 Trillion War on Poverty and Poverty Won” Johnson et al.
comprehensively nullify and void the Constitution and Bill of Rights, and actual Americans have something to celebrate?
No. Actual Americans have something to recover; their country.
What would George Washington do?

Happy 4th JT.
A special thanks to President Trump
For sharing the magnificent power machines
Which gave us Liberty and Freedom.
IJt’s a shame with your education you don’t the difference between Our Representative Constitutional Republic which does exist and what was that ‘representative democracy’ which has never existed.
Still waiting for someone to point where that other word, after being rejected by the founders nine times, might be found in the Declaration of Independence, The Constitution, or the Bill of Rights or anywhere else that is an official document.
Opinion pieces such as the federalist and anti federalist papers are not official documents. .
And the PC professor (and Fox news contributor) says nary a word about today’s charade parade.

“Anonymous” should submit a schedule of topics and dates that JT should follow in covering these topics…..I think Anonymous and others who whine about these columns and the the topics/ lack of topic/choice of topics/ dates topics covered should be the ones making these decisions.😄😃😂🤣
When JT gets done reviewing all of the demands for what’s covered and when, he’ll have a better idea of how to accommodate people like “Anonymous”.
JT, be vigilant
When those F-35’s show up tonight in Wash DC & the sky jocks come in hard & fast there could be some collateral damage. Sonic booms from F-35’s have blown out windows & cracked sheet rock inside homes.

While I don’t disagree, there’s no need to arrogantly and unnecessarily flaunt it. In doing so, it ultimately works against us.

The Nike controversy shows how our differences are now overwhelming our core shared values, including the very symbol of this nation.
No, the Nike controversy shows there are people in gatekeeper positions at Nike who aren’t loyal to this country and fancy themselves superior individuals to its founders. They’ll do tricks for a tiresome no-account like Colin Kaepernick. It isn’t business, it’s the culture of a large slice of our professional-managerial class.
“the Nike controversy shows there are people in gatekeeper positions at Nike who aren’t loyal to this country”
Nonsense.
Enjoy the day, you old sourpuss.
To all those Americans who still think she is worth whatever it takes, I say Happy Independence Day. And to those who would oppress us and take our birthright, don’t tread on us. We remain Revolutionaries!

Get thee to Trump’s big parade and mingle with like-minded yahoos. And psst: No one is wants to “oppress” you, “take [your] birthright” or “tread on you.”
That works out well since their alternative isn’t pleasant – for them.
What are you yammering about, mespo?
