American Conservative Union Chair Says That Romney Could Be In “Physical” Danger

The Chair of the Conservative Political Action Conference has made news this week by not only saying that Sen. Mitt Romney (R, Utah) was not welcomed at the annual conference, but that the former Republican presidential nominee could be in danger of being being assaulted in such venues. Matt Schlapp said that ” I’d actually be afraid for his physical safety, people are so mad at him.” I recently wrote a Washington Post column defending Romney but the attacks have continued, including an attack by President Donald Trump last night at a campaign rally. It appears that the “Big Tent” party of Ronald Reagan has become a pup tent of exclusion.

In an interview Saturday on “Full Court Press” with Greta Van Susteren, Schlapp added that Romney’s vote was reprehensible: “When he needed a conservative like Donald Trump to endorse him in his Senate primary last time, he wanted him in. But then, when he gets the Senate job, he wants to distance himself from Trump. He’s a use-’em-and-lose-’em kind of guy.”

In fairness to Schlapp, he was not saying that he felt such a violent urge against Romney but that he believed some might harbor such urges after his Senate vote. He was expressing his concern for his safety and he may be right.

The Republican party has long had its famous and inspiring dissenters. Their opposition to aspects of the Party or its leadership was not necessarily correct on the merits, but the party once proudly cited the breadth and scope of its memberships. The statement that Romney is not just unwelcome but could be in physical jeopardy is a chilling statement about the state of our politics. As I wrote recently, there are similar threats being voiced from the other side, though this is a view of one of the main political organizations associated with the Republican party.

Romney voted against one article of impeachment and in favor of another. He did so out of his deep-seated beliefs not just in the case but his religion. That does not mean that he was right, but it means that he did the right thing. When did the party get so small, that there is no room for such a man?

  1. Hostility to Romney is to be expected, as its a reasonable inference that his political activity since 2016 has had purely personal motives. It’s hard to see how it makes any sense otherwise. The same deal with Jeff Flake’s peregrinations in the fall of 2018. Can’t be bothered with that sh!t, especially when it’s laden with sanctimonious trumpery. He needs to retire.

Yeah, so no equivalence, though Turley’s need to find one is ALWAYS there.

  3. I doubt Romney will be in physical danger, though there are a certain number of nuts in this world and all it takes is one. Still, in our time, political violence is generally a portside thing, because local politicians insist that police allow it and the courts will issue a slap on the wrist if the police do not allow it.

  4. Romney was for Trump when Trump was donating big bucks to Romney’s presidential campaign; against Trump when Trump announced his candidacy; for Trump when he wanted an administration job and when he needed Trump’s endorsement for his Senate run; and against Trump in the circus known as the impeachment trial.

This makes “I was for it before I was against it” look positively rational.

  5. They’re all in danger without their armed guards. They want your guns. but want to keep theirs

  6. Romney voted against one article of impeachment and in favor of another.

I’m indebted to the wag who described this as the “I-only-banged-three-of-your-six-bridesmaids” excuse.

  7. Geez, I’d feel real sorry for the man if we weren’t already aware of how many threats the President continues to receive on a daily basis>

  8. I agree with Schlapp. Romney is in physical danger. He has been patting himself on the head so much that he might suffer Traumatic Brain Injury. That, and holding his head at an angle, and looking up towards the Heavens in that angelic pose, could put a serious crick in his neck.

    1. LOL;)

How can he even get health insurance when his health is endangered by him tripping over his tongue.

  9. ROMNEY is two face LIAR, SELF CENTERED, he wants to be President, he had his chance, he is a failed politician, Voters of Utah should throw him out. He likes the attention, needs to simply go away.

  10. Republicans would boo him out of there for sure, but I really doubt they’d hurt him. It’s not like walking into a room full of left wingers – now those fruit loops would shout him down, throw water and cement at him, pull his hair, try to slit his throat, beat the tar out of him, then drive a van over him. Cause that’s what they do.

  11. What Mitt, a practicing Mormon doesn’t want you to know about

The Mormon Church LDS, Amassed $100 Billion. It Was the Best-Kept Secret in the Investment World.

The Mormon Church LDS has misled members on $100 billion tax-exempt investment fund, whistleblower alleges.

    1. Just look at the landowners of the surface Rights in Osage County Oklahoma.

The Mormons are not there to raise cattle?

  12. Being a “traitor” to your party now means accepting its leader’s reprehensible acts even though you honestly believe they make him guilty of impeachable offenses. So where does the hypocrisy lie? (No counter-comment is warranted; that’s a rhetorical question.)

Yeah I wouldn’t want someone wondering aloud if you stopped beating your wife rhetorically, either.

  13. Good to see JT taking a strong stand against potential harm to a founding member of the 1%.
    That’s courage, my friends.

Now, back to disparaging progressive ideas.

    1. Bill mcwilliams:
JT’s Pauline moment came in a plane ride with Romney when the Senator “plopped down next to him.” Not exactly the Road to Damascus but it’ll do. Apparently, the man was charming and introspective which made JT’s scales drop from his eyes (I’m very Biblical today) and see him as more than a “fantastic plastic” candidate. I didn’t get that privilege but I will say I represented a notorious con man once and I was willing to write the check by the end of our ride to the courthouse. Crocodiles have big — and persuasive — tears. Such gentle creatures!

          1. Interesting song that I haven’t heard before.

My wife’s genealogy research shows to her this song. Big John was written about a guy on one of her family’s lines back east.

Lots of guys killed in the mines, damn few had a song written about it

Then there’s Merle Haggard song that should have had far more play.

              1. “Jimmy Dean. The pure pork sausage king!”

Pity the losses to the world corporate leaders a so stupid they ruin almost everything they touch.

IE: They’ve got a bottle of the best single malt scotch.

                It’s worth X.

Corporate leaders dump half out & fill it back up with piss.

                What’s worth now?

We here no long buy Jimmy Dean sausage as we all know Corporate Ph’d up Jimmy’s recipe, so they bought his name, trash his product & it’s worthless now.

Rules of Biz 101: Name a Biz, Never use the family name if you think it’ll be sold.

At least Jimmy Dean made his wishes known to the public & put in the sales contract.

            1. For what ever reason the Meril Haggard song, Ghost Train, didn’t post so I’ll attempt to post again?

Please note the picture water station on the tracks. I find the engineering of industry interesting back then.

I’ve been of sites of old oil well round house that ran the oil field pump jacks, very large water wheel/gasoline ran saw mills. Among other stuff.

It’s all very simplistic when you see it yet I can see the complexity of whom every dreamt the solution up to address the problem.

              Anyway…

I checked with my wife, her John from that side of the family was a John McNeil, a coal miner in W Virigina.

The story goes, there was a cave-in at the mine & he became a local hero leading something like 30 men to a safe passage & out of the mine.

  14. 1. Romney stabbed Trump in the back with his vote.
    2. Romney threw the first punch. Trump is a counter-puncher.
    3. Schlapp’s wife works in the Trump administration.
    4. Schlapp is using non-credible threats against Romney’s safety as a pretext not to invite him to appear at CPAC.

    The end.

  15. “He did so out of his deep-seated beliefs not just in the case but his religion. That does not mean that he was right, but it means that he did the right thing. When did the party get so small, that there is no room for such a man?”
    *******************
And I say he did it out of hatred for Trump. No man knows another’s heart but the misery caused by corporate raiding at Bain Capital and the imperious crack about 47% ought to make anyone wonder about the motivations and piety of Saint Mitt. If I’m right, no party is so big as to include a hypocrite like Romney and as for doing the right thing? Well it all depends on what you mean by “right.”

    1. ‘Corporate raiding’ refers to hostile takeovers and greenmail extortion. AFAIK, BainCapital didn’t work those lines of business. They bought, managed, and sold businesses. Some of the companies they bought were distressed firms which later went bankrupt.

The remark about the ‘47%’ was a commonplace in starboard discourse during the Tea Party years. The problem with it is that it refers only to personal income taxes, when impecunious people pay property taxes and FICA, bear some portion of the burden of sales taxes, and bear some portion of the burden of property taxes if they’re renting. You wouldn’t expect someone of Romney’s sophistication to make that mistake.

  16. Maybe just a way for Matt to gin up attendance as the Seb Gorka aura wears thin and Bolton has bolted!

  17. “The Republican party has long had its famous and inspiring dissenters. The statement that Romney is not just unwelcome but could be in physical jeopardy is a chilling statement about the state of our politics.”

The Republican Party has become a shell of whatever it once was. They have been swallowed whole by a man who allows no dissent and encourages violence, Republican Senators bemoaned Adam Schiff when he quoted an article saying their heads would be “on a pike” if they voted against Trump. Isn’t that exactly what’s happened? Trump is now exacting revenge on everyone who had the nerve to put their conscience above Trump’s edicts. Don Jr. wanted Romney put out of the Party, Louie Gohmert was lauded for wearing a “Quit Mitt” button. The Attorney General sat in the front row cheering while Trump verbally assaulted his foes, large and small. This is certainly the pettiest President of all time who many of you embrace. He can’t appreciate a stance based on religious beliefs because he has none of his own. The Party has not only lost its way, they’ve gotten onto a runaway train with a conductor unconcerned with their well-being. Enjoy the ride.
