No Joking Matter: Survey Finds Six Out Of Ten Students View Offensive Jokes As “Hate Speech”

We have been discussing the growing intolerance for free speech on our campuses and the ever-expanding scope of both hate speech and “microaggression” definitions. Now, College Pulse has released a survey of 2,000 college students that finds six out of ten view offensive jokes to be hate speech — a view shared by many European countries which now regularly prosecuted people for such jokes.

There is a considerable contrast between the views of Democratic and Republican students. The poll found that 76 percent of Democratic students “believe offensive jokes can constitute hate speech” while only 36 percent of Republican students who hold that view.

We have previously discussed the alarming rollback on free speech rights in the West, particularly in Europe (here and here and here and here and here and here and here and here and here and here and here and here and here and here and here and here). We have seen comedians targeted with such court orders under this expanding and worrisome trend. (here and here and here).

Notably, comedians are refusing to perform on our campuses because of the threat of protests and shutdowns over jokes deemed by some to be offensive or discomforting. Comedy has always occurred on the edges of propriety and constitutes a long-valued form of social and political commentary. The effort to chill jokes and parody is part of a broader anti-free speech movement on our campuses.

  1. Speaking of goofy.

“Goofy Gavin,” Supreme Emperor of the Imperial One-Party Communist State of California, prosecuted Pacific Gas & Electric, with extreme prejudice and to the fullest extent of the law, in the amount of $30+ billion for causing “wildfires” which resulted in deaths and damage in multiple California counties.

“Goofy Gavin” hasn’t even rung up his legal pit bulls yet regarding the devastating, mortal and existential threat from the “Wuhan Flu” created either deliberately as a biological weapon or by omission as a random result of “wet market” or similar practices involved in food generation in China.

“Goofy Gavin” went after the source” in the case of “wildfires” and he has gone after no responsible party in the exponentially more serious “Wuhan Flu” outbreak.

“Goofy Gavin” could see clearly but has now, suddenly gone blind in terms of liability and recompense.

    What’s Wong with this picture?

    1. Bloody Trump has done his share of suing in his time but now he has the DOJ to do his bidding with Bully Boy Barr to carry the laboring oar.

And yet poor bloody Trump still claims victimhood and whines and threatens protected by Moscow Mitch, the destroyer of Democracy and the Constitution.

He has no wit but is filled with bile and anger…still raging at his disappointed and withholding father like a character in a Shakespeare Tragedy without the introspection or language.

But it’s not a play and he does not strut upon the boards but upon the backs and lives of Americans once the blessed of the world but he has cast us down. It may not be a play but it is a tragedy.

      1. He said, apropos of nothing; with emphasis on the exploits of “Goofy Gavin.”

Attorney General “Mr. Deep Deep State” William Barr is in position precisely to do nothing and nothing is precisely what AG Barr is doing. I don’t suppose anyone has noticed. Special Counsel John Durham is following U.S. Attorney John Huber (John who?) down the track to nowhere. There most certainly has been sufficient time for the AG to round up, coral and subject to the severest of penalties the whole “Obongo Gang.” It hasn’t happened yet…and never will.

        To wit,

The Obama Coup D’etat in America is the most egregious abuse of power and the most prodigious scandal in American political history.

        The co-conspirators are:

Bill Taylor, Eric Ciaramella, Rosenstein, Mueller/Team, Andrew Weissmann, Comey, Christopher Wray, McCabe, Strozk, Page,

Laycock, Kadzic, Yates, Baker, Bruce Ohr, Nellie Ohr, Priestap, Kortan, Campbell, Sir Richard Dearlove, Steele, Simpson, Joseph

Mifsud, Alexander Downer, Stefan “The Walrus” Halper, Azra Turk, Kerry, Hillary, Huma, Mills, Brennan, Gina Haspel, Clapper,

Lerner, Farkas, Power, Lynch, Rice, Jarrett, Holder, Brazile, Sessions (patsy), Nadler, Schiff, Pelosi, Obama, James E. Boasberg et

        al.

        1. George – the IG had a lovely report out the other day that in the 25 FISA applications they had checked, there were major problems in all of them. They pick 25 at random. That does not bode well for the FISC

          1. Obama has been manipulating the FBI, general “holdovers,” the FISC and legions of “resistance” and other liberal forces, conspiring to falsely incriminate and remove a sitting and duly-elected President of the United States.

Obama must have been charged and in previous centuries, and in some select other countries, he would have long ago been “adjudicated,” shall we say, with extreme prejudice.

The Lincoln coup d’etat and assassination conspirators, not the “assassin,” were hanged by the neck until dead within three months.

  2. Oh my! What has the world come to!! Cannot make my racist jokes anymore.

For a change try writing a blog on the dear leader – the maniac with blood on hands, the liar who is now trying to walk back everything he said just days earlier.

The kids will be fine. They are better human beings than the generation you yearn for.

    1. Sure, let’s let the kiddies overturn ancient notions of law and rights because it makes them feel better. Maybe we can just split the country in two…I’ll take the George Carlins, Lenny Bruces, and Bill Hicks of this world while you’re being run by Mao and an army of vicious children waving little red books.

  3. “In December 2019, an outbreak of apparently viral pneumonia of unknown etiology emerged in the city of Wuhan, in the Chinese province of Hubei.

“On January 9, 2020, the Chinese health authorities and the World Health Organization (WHO) announced the discovery of a novel coronavirus, known as 2019-nCoV (isolated on January 7), which was confirmed as the agent responsible for the pneumonia cases.”

What? You’re blaming the Chinese Dear Leader She for the “Wuhan Flu,” the one with the Wuhan signature from the city of Wuhan in the Chinese province of Hubei where the “Wuhan Outbreak” was first detected?

Oh, you got the Wong guy!

  4. If these ideologues of the Left bothered to take some history classes,

First, they’d very quickly learn that all of their oh-so-glorious goals are doomed to result in a great big bloody mess.
Second, they’d find out they’re doing things out of order. Gotta get our guns first, dummies.

And best of luck with that.

    1. What ideologues of the Left? The only ideologues evident on this thread are knee-jerk right wingers eager to place their preferred meaning on a sloppy poll lacking any specificity about it’s questions.

      1. That’s true. Neither you, nor Peter, nor Natacha have a coherent ideology. You all have a portfolio of antagonisms. Natacha supplements this with general lunacy and you supplement it with conceit. Not a good look.

          1. Karl Marx, Vladimir Lenin, Leon Trotsky, Joseph Stalin, Mao Tse-tung, Xi Jinping, Kim Jong-un, Woodrow Wilson, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Lyndon Baines Johnson, Barack Obama,…

      2. “What ideologues of the Left?”

…Uh, the 42% of respondents that think comedians have to be politically correct?

        But way to out yourself.

        1. em, your standards are dipping. You have no idea who the respondents are and what they meant. There was no example presented of the subject of “an “offensive joke” by those asking the poll question. They could have imagined aborted babies, black welfare queens, Donald Trump, Jewish bankers, or dumb rednecks.

          You see the problem?

          1. bythebook, I don’t disagree with you about that particular question, but that’s not the one I’m referring to.

  5. The communists are promoting dictatorship; the “dictatorship of the proletariat” from the Communist Manifesto.

The communists must be introduced to the full force and effect of law and fundamental law holding dominion.

A judicial branch and Supreme Court which cannot grasp and will not support the Constitution must be impeached and convicted.

The judicial branch has no authority to modify the Constitution or legislation by act or omission.

Freedom of speech is not qualified by the Constitution and is, therefore, absolute.

People must adapt to the outcomes of freedom.

Freedom does not adapt to people.

    Dictatorship does.

“Congress shall make no law…abridging the freedom of speech…”

    1. Monty Python is good 👍 gold stars

I like this photo of Kathleen Hughes, quite the face, it’s from the movie, IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE. It sure did.

A lot of students are still very young, some will grow up, and change their mind/opinions. Some won’t.

But yeah, everyone should be able to take a joke. That’s why George and I are BFFs now, and starting the Turd Police Task Force 💩 👮

  6. The people who say “offensive jokes are hate speech” are also the same people who regularly say vile things towards Trump, white people, men, Christians, etc…and they aren’t joking. These people are capable of genocide just like Pol Pot.

    1. Ivan, they are also capable being resolved, such as Saloth Sar aka Pol Pot resolved the academic chatterers and urbane sophisticates and do nothings in his time.

Shovels, re-education centers, etc. Pol Pot was imitating Mao., Read a little here:

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Down_to_the_Countryside_Movement#cite_note-1

“The Up to the Mountains and Down to the Countryside Movement, often known simply as the Down to the Countryside Movement, was a policy instituted in the People’s Republic of China in the late 1960s and early 1970s. As a result of what he perceived to be pro-bourgeois thinking prevalent during the Cultural Revolution, Chairman Mao Zedong declared certain privileged urban youth would be sent to mountainous areas or farming villages to learn from the workers and farmers there. In total, approximately 17 million youth were sent to rural areas as a result of the movement.[1]”

Ivan, I find this notion inspiring. Perhaps soon, the unemployed, unruly urban youths of today, who presume to tell others what jokes to enjoy or not, that is to say, the footsoldiers of political correctness; will one day be re-purposed and re-educated by digging irrigation ditches in the desert in Arizona. There, in the hot sun, they can work for their food, and learn the usefulness of youth respecting their elders.

I think that there is a center mass in the USA of regular folks, who are like the regular folks among the peasants who supported Mao in his civil war against the urban power of the Nationalists. History calls them communists, but they were Chinese nationalists, every bit as much as Chiang Kai Shek’s faction.

Eventually, these political issues are either negotiated, or they are managed as they were at other times, more rapidly and forcefully. There is probably no way around it, so there’s not too much sense in worrying as things slide downwards towards hotter conflict.

      1. Whole mess of stupid comedy there in one post Kurtz. Can you spread it out next time? I especially liked “…the unemployed, unruly urban youths of today, who presume to tell others what jokes to enjoy or not, that is to say, the footsoldiers of political correctness;…” So the crips and bloods are the college students who responded to this poll ….. or what? Your readiness for the revolution was another. You really don’t know what that means, and what you have to lose, do you?

        1. Oh, I have been thinking it over for decades. One thing I’ve learned is that I’m not in control of where it’s all going. It happens or it doesnt, I’m ready for contingencies either way.

But to the rest of your reply. If you mean blacks, well sure sometimes those unemployed urban youths are occasionally lumpenproletariat shock troops for the commissar types agitating over racial issues. but that’s not who i had in mind today.

in this instance that’s not really who i was referring to….here i am more thinking of the college kids. they too are unemployed urban youths, with a certain precise demographic representation due to admissions racial standards, but a majority are probably just spoiled white kids who should be in university dorms but now have had to go home and do “Remote learning” which we will all soon realize is not half of what it’s been cracked up to be.

these spoiled kids are going to learn fast that all that political correctness junk doesn’t matter very much at the end of the day. they better learn fast because the pace of change is rapid.

I am a huge fan of spoiled white kids learning through hard labor. I am going to take one of my spoiled white university kids and put that kid to work with a shovel myself. The garden beds need to be turned over asap. and that labor will be healthy and rewarding.

but the toughest kind of hard labor that i had in mind, when he mentioned Saloth Sar, was that which would be most salutary for a bunch of fat purple haired harridans in “gender studies” departments, or perhaps some slick fast talking “upwardly mobile” HR types working in university diversity offices. they should all be laid off post haste. right now the universities need competent janitors more than they need overpaid “diversity managers”

          to to recap:

useless managerial posts like “diversity managers” should die off fast. they very well may be fired sooner than workers who actually do something useful like build, stock, and sell.

useless professorial posts like “gender studies” need to die off fast too.

          metaphorically speaking of course

I love the way you casually dismiss property rights with the same trite verbiage you do everything else important. The American Revolution was fought over taxation and property rights, the latter fostered when British soldiers “wouldn’t stay off the lawn” of the colonists. It’s the smug know-nothing pop culture of the Left that thinks they have the moral monopoly with no regard for history or even human nature.

So let me set it out plain for all, you come on to my property and refuse to leave after I’ve told you to do so, prepare yourself for some self-help, cowboy justice that Chuck Aspinwall alluded to earlier. I presume your outright defiance to my face is lethal and no one will be around to dispute my assessment of the facts of the encounter or what they find on or about your person afterwards. No warnings, no pleas, no nothing!

        1. it worked out poorly for those who croaked, that’s for certain. Surely that was a majority of them. A very sad outcome for Cambodia, at least at the time. They seem to be doing ok now. Perhaps for a long time, Cambodians will hesitate before they undertake careers in useless social parasitism. I am just speculating. I suspect that today, most of the people there, who have the scanty few “careers in diversity and inclusion” are foreigners working for foreign companies. In a global depression, they will be sent packing.

I also speculate, that in that majority of the victims of the Khmer Rouge, who were innocents, and that majority there were some number of shiftless urbanites and social parasite types who contribute nothing to society. Probably that was a lot smaller percentage than what we have in america today. In my mind, we have a big surplus of useless positions sucking up resources from those who actually work.

There will be a silver lining in these clouds watching some of that waste shrivel on the vine.

a long time ago a conservative told me he saw some logic in Mao’s notion of the “Down to the Countryside” movement. Not everything the communists did was stupid.

I suggest that people thinking too much about “Careers in diversity and inclusion” perhaps learn something useful instead. Welding or plumbing perhaps?

Many today are imagining that this disease crisis will pass and all will return to normal. That is not possible. There are people filing unemployment already who will learn the bitter truth that they had berths in an overly complicated system that is now being hollowed out rapidly.

          1. Kurtz, by “shiftless urbanites and social parasite types who contribute nothing to society” you don’t mean civil attorneys do you?

            1. some of them are certainly parasites.yes. if the shoe fits they will wear it soon enough.

my wheelhouse will be very busy the next year. i swim as a fish in the water

                1. there are scads of legal parasites out there who make a lot more money than me. I told you i am just a humble guy out in flyover. i am not in biglaw, I am not on the government payroll for one thin dime, and I am not a hotshot of any kind whatsoever.

the thing is a lot of them just got laid off, but I’m still at work, deemed essential by government, and my clients too

some people think small business is screwed now. i beg to differ. small business will flourish as leverage big business choke on their fat lines of credit wrapped around their necks like a noose, tightening. small business is a small fish that will slip the net of economic doom.

                  1. OK, but maybe try to be less judgmental about what others do. We live in an advanced civilization where very few are “essential” to staying alive or well, but are part of what makes most of our lives more interesting, enjoyable, and more than just existing.

          2. 5th Amendment right to private property precludes any and all interference by Congress – no affirmative action matriculation, no affirmative action employment, no minimum wage, no rent control, no “Fair Housing,” no “Non-Discrimination,” etc.

Article 1, Section 8, precludes taxation for individual or specific welfare as it allows taxation only for “…general Welfare…” such as eminently general roads, water, electricity, sewer, trash collection, post office, etc., that which ALL require in similar amounts and frequency (people don’t require the same clothes, housing, food, healthcare, etc.).

Specific or individual welfare is distinctly not “…general Welfare.”

“…and never the twain shall meet.”

Article 1, Section 8, allows regulation only of the value of money, the flow of commerce among jurisdictions and land and naval Forces. No other regulation is constitutional.

The entire welfare state is unconstitutional. Government may only “take” property for the public good after compensation. Government cannot direct any aspect of private property or claim or exercise dominion over private property. Charity is industry conducted in the free markets of the private sector. Welfare is up to each individual. Regulation is an activity of private industry. Privatization is the operative word at this juncture in American history.
            ____________________________________________________________________

Private property is “that dominion which one man claims and exercises over the external things of the world, in exclusion of every other individual.”

    2. By “…white people, men…” do you mean Americans?

Do you mean those who wrote the U.S. Constitution?

Do you mean the American Founders?

Do you mean the “…free white person(s)…” the Founders required for citizenship four times in the Naturalization Acts of 1790, 1795, 1798 and 1802.

      Those “…white people, men…?”

      Those Americans?

      1. I have no idea what you’re getting at.

I’m talking about hatred towards people because of the color of their skin TODAY. The racist fashion of the day is hatred towards white people…throw in male, Christian, straight, and older to create the ultimate triggering cocktail.

It is these hateful people who are pushing “hate speech” laws with no sense of irony.

  7. A Hasidic Jew walks into a bar with a parrot on his shoulder. The bartender says, “Where did you get that?” The parrot replies, “In Brooklyn —– they’re all over the place.”

    1. This is true. We are talking kindergarten. The young teachers of today have been fully brainwashed and radicalized. top to bottom, and if you aren’t paying very close attention to your children’s schooling you may never know. Every parent everywhere should be involved.

    2. Right now, universities have more need to staff the payrolls with janitors than they do with “diversity and inclusion” programs. Budgets WILL be readjusted, over the next year, one can be sure of it.

  8. Why are dead attorneys buried 100 feet underground? Because deep deep down attorneys are really good people.

  9. Here’s the link to the poll, which LT left out. The poll is near meaningless in that no examples of “offensive jokes” are given, so each person answering is imagining what that means. Something JT doesn’t reference is the gender divide on the question.

By the way, there is no shortage of comedians engaging in outrage just to be outrageous as somehow being disgusting has taken the place of clever wit in contemporary “comedy”.

  10. Not surprising. The whole Social Justice Warrior and Wokesterism is the same mindset of the old Women’s Christian Temperance Union – the rabid Christians who broke up saloons with axe-handles prior to Prohibition. And they are just as preachy.

The Left mostly can’t stand Christianity, but it is a denominational schism IMHO. The same “rational” folks who becry The Flying Spaghetti Monster embrace all the latest insanity such as self-identified gender, or the Superior Wisdom of People of Color.

It is hilarious and sad at the same time.

    1. Very much agreed, and heaven help one if they are democratically secular. I have had the same thought, this is Puritanism all over again. A difference I would observe is that they are cowards hiding behind social media and complicit others. Most would and do fall in a heap if confronted face to face.

      1. James, have you actually seen any contemporary comedians, and especially of the age that college students would have seen them? Your fear about coming Puritanism is way off. The more grossly detailed is the norm as if “honesty” about things we all for social reasons don’t want to dwell on is the new norm and is disturbing for that very feature but also for it’s lacking cleverness and subtlety. If you think a young woman telling us the details of her last period is amusing or some guy discussing bowel movements and erections, yeah, perfect.
