“Needs To Be Quashed Immediately”: Michigan Clerk Files Criminal Complaint Against Resident Who Mocks Mail-In Voting

Byrum insisted that “It is a felony to take illegal possession of an absentee ballot. Elections in this country are to be taken seriously and there are many people who are voting by mail for the first time this election.”

In so saying, Byrum succeeded in looking even more crazed than the residents with a toilet on their lawn.

The relevant provision appears to be:

(f) A person other than an absent voter; a person whose job it is to handle mail before, during, or after being transported by a public postal service, express mail service, parcel post service, or common carrier, but only during the normal course of his or her employment; a clerk or assistant of the clerk; a member of the immediate family of the absent voter including father-in-law, mother-in-law, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, grandparent, or grandchild; or a person residing in the absent voter’s household shall not do any of the following:
  (i) Possess an absent voter ballot mailed or delivered to another person, regardless of whether the ballot has been voted.
(ii) Return, solicit to return, or agree to return an absent voter ballot to the clerk of a city, township, village, or school district.

This of course is a toilet and a joke.  If a voter actually thought he or she was voting by lawn commode, would we really want that person participating in an election?

If the resident is joking, it is not solicitation to return.  Moreover, Byrum is using this ridiculous interpretation to effectively punish a voter for engaging in political speech.  The picture shows that next to the toilet is a sign reading “Recall Whitmer.” This is clearly political speech protesting the massive increase in mail-in voting that has many citizens (and President Donald Trump) complaining over possible fraud.   So Byrum responds with a criminal referral that seems retaliatory and harassing in character.

Byrum also comes across as a petty tyrant in proclaiming “This kind of behavior needs to be quashed immediately. They are making a mockery of our elections. I’m not going to stand idly by and watch it happen.” That comment seems so over-the-top that I double checked sources to confirm that she said it.

Byrum appears to view her office as empowering her to “quash . . . mockery” like some humor police. The mockery in this story is using a felony crime to threaten political critics.

This is why Einstein said “Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I’m not sure about the universe.”

  1. I already mailed my ballot for Trump in the outhouse. There is also toilet paper with photos. Choice, not an echo. One roll on a spindle with Trump’s photo and another roll on a spindle next to Trump’s with Biden’s photo on the toilet papers.

The resident should replace the sign with a picture of Byrum in the toilet and have all the other residents flush Byrum to where he belongs.

IMO, this says about all there needs to be said on this matter!

  4. If the statute cited by Barb Byrum, clerk of Ingham County, is to be upheld as intended, then ballot harvesting is illegal in the State of Michigan. This in the face of last week’s ruling by Michigan Court of Claims Judge Cynthia Stephens, who essentially extended the deadline for mail-in ballots to be counted, even if they arrive after the polls close on Election Day, which stood as the previous deadline.

  5. Obviously doesn’t have any real work to do. In a rational system she would be top of the queue for redundancy. In the present set up she will probably get promoted so she can be even more stupid on a grander scale. Is this what happens when you employ other than meritocracy?

  6. Another irrelevant column to jerk the chains of his mostly right wing audience.

Meanwhile, completely relevant actions surrounding mail-in ballots by the most powerful man in the world go unnoted by JT, month after month. No doubt we’ll get the obligatory “many of us have spoke out about (fill in the blank) by the President”..with a yet another full column denunciation of (fill in the blank from among CNN, MSNBC, Jerry Nadler, a Clerk of the Court from Bumlove, Mich).

With a pandemic ongoing, which his own administration has produced guidelines for which include mask wearing and social distancing and extreme care by the elderly and those in at-risk groups, the most powerful man in the world has done nothing to aid Vote by Mail efforts and has actually acted to sabotage this entirely rationale option for many voters. He further uses doubts about that option to spread conspiratorial theories about why it should not be trusted and his (expected) loss will be due to that.

This – along with actions upon learning of the pandemic’s threat to our country – is where a half way decent and competent president would marshal resources in a way only he can, to make the process more reliable and available to those feeling they need to use it.

The man is a self dealing scum bag of the lowest order and this issue demonstrates it as well as any, though there have been numerous others throughout his presidency. I don;t know how people who consider themselves moral and serious people – and I know they exist – can continue to support someone like this. The stain on them and their party will not go away quickly. JT’s regular silence stains him more deeply as ignorance is not an excuse.

    1. I don;t know how people who consider themselves moral and serious people – and I know they exist – can continue to support someone like this.

You don’t know despite JT giving you opportunity after opportunity to know. You remind me of The Drowning Man sory.

A fellow was stuck on his rooftop in a flood. He was praying to God for help.

Soon a man in a rowboat came by and the fellow shouted to the man on the roof, “Jump in, I can save you.”

The stranded fellow shouted back, “No, it’s OK, I’m praying to God and he is going to save me.”

      So the rowboat went on.

Then a motorboat came by. “The fellow in the motorboat shouted, “Jump in, I can save you.”

To this the stranded man said, “No thanks, I’m praying to God and he is going to save me. I have faith.”

      So the motorboat went on.

Then a helicopter came by and the pilot shouted down, “Grab this rope and I will lift you to safety.”

To this the stranded man again replied, “No thanks, I’m praying to God and he is going to save me. I have faith.”

So the helicopter reluctantly flew away.

Soon the water rose above the rooftop and the man drowned. He went to Heaven. He finally got his chance to discuss this whole situation with God, at which point he exclaimed, “I had faith in you but you didn’t save me, you let me drown. I don’t understand why!”

To this God replied, “I sent you a rowboat and a motorboat and a helicopter, what more did you expect?”

So yes, you not understanding is not because you haven’t had the opportunity.

  7. People should look into the number of issues Ingham County had in the 2016 Presidential election. Ingham County was one of the counties that was unable to completely re-count their ballots because several bags of ballot had compromised seals.

  8. “They are making a mockery of our elections.”

Us vs them? Whose elections are they? Methinks the elections belong to the people (even people joking about mail-in ballots going down the drain), since from amongst us we choose our representatives in government.

In any case, the political leadership seems to be doing a pretty good job of making a mockery of it all by themselves.

  9. Obama was illegally robbed of nearly 100 federal judge picks and then robbed of a U.S. Supreme Court pick. One of the greatest subversions of democracy in 200 years but bureaucrats want us to view the process as legitimate. Obama might have a very legitimate federal court case using recent legal precedent. Why aren’t we talking about this?

    1. Ashcroft’s remark is so typically uninformed and out of the planet, but so typical for a leftwinger. Yes, Ashcroft, you should put your ballot in the toilet where it belongs.

  10. When I first saw this, I thought it was pretty funny. However, I did not think anyone would take it seriously. Still, we know the Left can’t meme, so it appears they don’t have sense of humor either.

  11. In reading this article, I’m not sure who the stupid/crazy one is here. You used a great term to describe Ms. Bynum: petty tyrant. Definitely a pursuit by the lunatic fringe.

  12. Ms. Byrum is living proof of why we need the Constitution.

Can you imagine if she had unrestricted power comni9ned with her authoritarian views and her intellect?

NB – Those Dems who are in the process of shredding the Constitution need to think about this incident.

    1. Yeah, I know. Did you see Jim Inhofe explain how an ice cube melting in a glass of water doesn’t make the level rise, so icebergs melting in the ocean won’t make the seas rise. There were many Republicans who watched, nodding their heads, Yup. Have you listened to Trump at all. And, people actually vote them in. There are left wing idiots and right wing idiots. Perhaps we should have an ‘idiot off’ here on Turley’s blog. Turley seems to weigh heavily for the right and runs a seemingly unending rant on left wing idiots. He forgets there are far more right wing idiots and in far more dangerous places.

      1. Though glacier melt isn’t the only consideration, that experiment happens to be correct, feel free to try it. The sea likely would’t rise by much. But the left is ‘the party of science’, amirite? Sheesh. Cavemen had more sense than the modern left. Mr. Wizard used to do that experiment on his kid’s show, so yes, even 10 year-olds in the 80s had more sense. And the rest of us have memories, no matter how erasure is perpetrated by millennials and their associations or others. You guys going to kill all of the 2/3 of the population we constitute?

        1. James, you are correct, left believes itself to be the Party of Science, just as they did when they believed the world was flat, and would burn any non-believer as a heretic.

        2. You must have turned your brain off early like Inhofe. Placing an ice cube in a glass of water and watching it melt and not affect the level of water in the glass, and then using this to argue that global warming won’t raise the sea levels is the argument of a blithering idiot. Inhofe, arguably the most blithering of idiots in the Senate and the head of the Republican committee on environment issues, is the quintessential political dolt that was elected by a preponderance of dolts, or Republicans.

It’s not the ice cube in the glass that will make the level rise. It is not the icebergs in the ocean that will make the sea levels rise. Try measuring the level before and after the ice cube goes into the glass. Now imagine the three mile deep ice caps on top of the ground in Antarctica and Greenland, being placed into the oceans. Now, take a deep breath and try and figure out how you ever made it this far in life.

          1. Issac, put a can of Coke in your freezer and see what happens. It expands, correct? Did the amount of Coke increase? No. There are other factors involved in what happens when there is melting but free flowing glacier ice floats because ice is lighter than water based on the molecular structure of ice compared to water. Freezing water doesn’t increase the number of molecules of H2O.

            1. OK, genius, so instead of raising the sea levels 15 feet, it will only raise them 14 feet. I can hear the wheels a turning from here, rusty, decrepit, somewhat mindless, and definitely obtuse.

              1. Issac, it seems you still don’t get the physics and can’t seem to integrate the different things that are happening. That is the problem with people that can be convinced without scientific proof and unquestioningly draw conclusions about complex events. Calling me “genius” was an insult even though I explained some of the chemistry and physicis to you. Last time it had to do with a Canadian court case you didn’t know about or understand. That was Chaoulli v Quebec.

I don’t fault you for not having adequate knowledge of the law, physics or chemistry. I fault you for drawing conclusions when you don’t have any idea of what you are talking about. I should probably include the history of the earth’s surface because at one time there was farming where there is now ice.

Hysteria is not a way to discuss these problems and your comment was a bit hysterical.

      2. Your point is?
If you melt an ice-(cube or berg) that is floating the water level changes little.
If you add an ice-(cube or berg) to water the level rises.
If the ice floating in the Arctic all melted the water level would change little.
If the ice resting on Greenland (forget Antarctic) all melted the water level would change quite a bit — maybe six inches.
How many degrees of change would be required to melt all the glaciers on all the land? Multiples of the worst-case 100 year estimate by the IPCC. No wonder Obama feels safe in a home a whole foot above sea level.

        1. The consensus of scientists around the world is that the Antarctic and Geenland ice caps, not counting the caps on Arctic islands, if melted would raise the sea levels 10 to 15 feet. This is on the conservative side. But, hey, you can believe the Republicans like Inhofe, Trump, Cotton, Graham, etc. Blind leading the blind, with idiots interspersed.

        1. Rhodes

The maniacs in Philadelphia chasing down people are scum that happen to have attached themselves to a just cause and pervert it to its detriment. You have this scum on the left and on the right you have the scum that take their arsenal to a protest.

The scary thing is the maniacs in the Republican Party, Senate, White House.

      3. “so icebergs melting in the ocean”

There is a lot to consider so I will just ask a question. Do you know why icebergs float?

          1. Icebergs barely float. Almost all of the mass is below the surface. Air captured in the ice is the answer and it is inconsequential, except to someone obtusely grasping for straws. Icebergs are not the issue here. Three miles thick ice caps over Antarctica and Greenland are the issue. Another thing to consider is the tipping point. When the seas become warmer, deeper, methane that is trapped by being under cold water will be released into the atmosphere. This will accelerate the warming process, and so on. It’s called the tipping point.

The one thing most obtuse people, or people in the pockets of the fossil fuel industries fail to surface is that mitigating global warming is an enormous industry that already generates wealth, jobs, and over all good. If a minuscule tax were to be put on the goods consumed that contribute to the fouling of our planet, it would fund an economic revolution that would surpass the industrial revolution. The future of mankind depends on increasing and redistributing wealth at the same time. The status quo is an anchor holding us back. Witness, if you can, the tech revolution. It took the place of almost nothing and the world is better for it. What would happen if a ‘clean revolution’ took the place of our ‘dirty existence’ and created and redistributed wealth? Why, it’s almost a conservative concept.

            1. “Air captured in the ice is the answer”

It may be part of the answer but the molecular structure of water that is frozen is another part of the anwers.

I don’t wan’t to argue climate science since no one really knows what is happening and that is why the models don’t work.

The only question I concern myself with is whether or not the political remediation of the problem, should there be a problem, work. To date none of the remediation would save the planet should it suddenly heat up which I find very doubtful. To me that is the problem. Spending money to make certain people richer isn’t the answer.

” If a minuscule tax were to be put on the goods consumed that contribute to the fouling of our planet, it would fund an economic revolution”

That deals with both pollution and the claim of global warming. We do that type of penalty today and it is more along the methodolgy of Milton Friedman. The problem is that one has to be careful with how that impacts people. I’m for a clean environment so there we have a good deal of agreement.
