Will Adam Schiff’s Claims Now Be Blocked On Twitter?

Twitter LogoJust a day after more than 50 former senior intelligence officials signed on to a letter declaring that the recent disclosure of emails from the Hunter Biden laptop is likely Russian disinformation, the FBI reportedly confirmed that the material does not appear to be Russian disinformation. While former officials like John Brennan insisted that the story “has all the classic earmarks of a Russian information operation,” the FBI appears to have found no such evidence thus far. This followed a similar conclusion from the Director of National Intelligence in response to House Intelligence Committee Chair Adam Schiff saying that the story was pure Russian disinformation. The question is whether Twitter and Facebook will now bar access to Schiff’s statements pending further review since the actual intelligence agencies are suggesting that this could be democratic disinformation. After all, a former Twitter executive is calling for President Trump to be barred from all social media until after the election to prevent “misinformation.” The burden of being a free speech advocate is the the answer is clearly no. Those, like Schiff, who have called for censoring material on the Internet still should benefit from the protections of free speech.

From a free speech perspective, it does not matter if the Schiff statement and the letter have “all the classic earmarks of a [Democratic] information operation,” we all benefit from a free and robust discussion of such issues. We do not need these companies to censor or inhibit stories to protect us from misinformation.

The letter itself is striking not only in its sweeping conclusion (without actually reviewing the laptop or the emails), but it signatories. This includes some of those who have been associated with the Russian investigation of the Trump campaign, which was based in part on the Steele dossier. That dossier, funded by the Clinton campaign, was recently found to have been based on information supplied by a known Russian agent.

Throughout the campaign, and for many weeks after, the Clinton campaign denied any involvement in the creation of the dossier that was later used to secure a secret surveillance warrant against Trump associates during the Obama administration. Journalists later discovered that the Clinton campaign hid the payments to Fusion as a “legal fees” among the $5.6 million paid to the law firm. New York Times reporter Ken Vogel at the time said that Clinton lawyer Marc Elias had “vigorously” denied involvement in the anti-Trump dossier. When Vogel tried to report the story, he said, Elias “pushed back vigorously, saying ‘You (or your sources) are wrong.’” Times reporter Maggie Haberman likewise wrote: “Folks involved in funding this lied about it, and with sanctimony, for a year.” Even when Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta was questioned by Congress on the matter, he denied any contractual agreement with Fusion GPS. Sitting beside him was Elias, who helped devise the contract.

Of course, the contents of the Steele dossier were reported in detail by the media. The reporting covered thousands of articles. It turns out that the FBI warned early in the investigation that Steele may have been used to spread Russian disinformation — a view that was strengthened by the disclosure of Steele’s many source.  To this day, the media has largely ignored this story and how it was used to spread possible Russian disinformation.

If this is not disinformation, the emails magnify concerns that Hunter Biden was involved in a pay-to-play scheme. The emails appear to refer to Joe Biden receiving money and certainly refer to influence peddling.

I have previously stated that I remain suspicious of the timing and means of this disclosure. I want to see it investigation including the role of figures like Rudy Giuliani. Conversely, I have also been struck by what the Biden campaign has not said in response to the story.  Both sides of the story should be investigated.  However, there is a virtual news blackout on the contents of the emails even though (even with hacking) the emails could be legitimate. As discussed earlier, this is what a state media looks like . . . without the state apparatus.  Major networks are still reporting that this is clearly Russian disinformation and dismissing the story.  There is a clear effort to avoid scrutiny of the emails for just two more weeks. However, the disinformation claim is now being reportedly challenged by intelligence agencies. It does not matter. This is a fact too good to check.   We are left with an entire media establishment turning blue holding its collective breath for weeks to see if they can make it across the line. There is an easier approach. It is called journalism. You investigate and report on both sides, including a demand that Hunter and Joe Biden respond to these specific emails as well as conflicting past statements. Sometimes the simplest things are the most difficult.

  1. No. The answer is no. The Dems will not be banned from Twitter…or facebook…or be scrubbed from google. Know why? Because even though we’ve known about their censorship for years now…nobody on the Right has done a thing at all to stop it. We on the Right do NOTHING to defend ourselves. Half of the time some members of the GOP peel off and defend the Democrat duplicity. That’s why it’s so hard to win. Conservatives can’t get out of our own way.

  2. That letter is a textbook example of a defense attorney’s gambit. When the facts are against your client, create a strawman ex nihilo.

  3. It is outlandish to so casually concede that some/most/all of the contents of the laptop might be a product of misinformation, and also state that Biden and journalists must act as if they are real and respond accordingly. Even if some of the e-mails are real, responding to those e-mails would give the entire hard drive credibility that is so far has not earned, and would thereby allow Rudy to claim that misinformation/false contents are real. This post continues a trend of deference to the administration that ignores how out of step from tradition it has been acting, such as by the Prof citing the DNI as if he has not shredded his credibility by his political activities. Everything in the laptop fact pattern is suspicious and incredible, and the fact that Rudy refused to allow journalists to verify the hard drive or its contents, that he conceded noone but the Post would have published the story because they would have wanted to verify it, and that he said he plans to drip drip contents for maximal political impact shows where the burden lies. The post ignores Rudy’s highly suspicious activities in this area, from going to Ukraine to dig up dirt, to meetings with suspected (by the current Admin) Russian agents. You can’t both-sides this. If the FBI actually investigates and verifies, which it has not yet done, then of course Biden should respond. In the meantime it does not make sense, politically or legally.

  4. There is a photo of Schiff on the wall of an outhouse here at a marina. A scrub under it says: Snake In The Grass.

  5. 50 former spies, spooks, and supposed intelligence experts, without evidence, say they believe the sudden emergence of the Biden family influence peddling schemes documented in emails MAY be a Russian disinformation campaign.

They’re relying on their reputation as supposed intel experts, and using the skills they’ve been taught by the federal government to lie on behalf of the federal government, to plant the idea in the minds of voters that it COULD be Russian disinformation. No evidence. But it could be.

We can’t “unread” it. We can’t “unhear” Lester Holt on NBC Nightly News, and his peers on the other networks, authoritatively report about the existence of this letter.

So the idea is now firmly planted in our subconscious.

They are engaging in a psy-ops campaign. Except that rather than target foreign populations, they are targeting voters in their own country. Extraordinary.

    1. SCOTT,

It could be their years of experience where they recognize something familiar. The Russians have already done it before. There’s no reason to to assume they are not doing it again.

Even Turley himself is suspicious about the whole thing. Here he’s trying to whitewash his own suspicion with hopeful assumptions that a trump official is being…honest. An assumption that is often shown to be a fallacy.

Two Trump investigations have already turned up nothing. It seems Trump is engaging in the very thing he despised, a witch-hunt. The irony here is that most of the allegations against hunter Biden are no different than what Trump’s own children are engaged in.

Now it has been revealed that trump has a Chinese bank account.

      1. You keep using my email address to share talking points from our troll group. Use your own assigned email address. No one on here seriously believes what you write under my avatar reflects how I think. I never use complicated phrases with multiple adjectives and adverbs. C’mon bruh

        1. “Svelaz” at 10:46 AM, who isn’t the real Svelaz is trolling the real Svelaz. The icon isn’t correct for Svelaz, even though the person is using that name.

          1. Anonymous, yep.

            “ SCOTT,

It could be their years of experience where they recognize something familiar. The Russians have already done it before. There’s no reason to to assume they are not doing it again.”

That’s my actual post. The other “Svelaz”, the troll is the one complaining. Smh.

I’ve noticed the icons change throughout multiple postings. It doesn’t seem to be a permanent identifier.

      2. “Now it has been revealed that trump has a Chinese bank account.”

The ignorance of some. Joe Biden was VP and Hunter used such influence to earn millions of dollars. Joe sold out America to the Chinese and other enemies. Their fortune is linked to his high public office. Biden’s practices led to our technology now being used by the Chinese military.

The Trump Children earned their money in the private sector.

Trump had an account because his organization has interests ( Owned by others as well as Trump) all over the world.) They needed a bank and chose one in the US and China. I believe that account has been inactive since 2015 except perhaps to pay taxes.

You should learn the difference between the Biden family that got rich while being in public office and selling influence and the Trumps who earned money in the private sector.

          1. Ignorance is bliss JF so you are a happy man. Trump paid millions in taxes, but blissful thinking makes you unable to understand that simple fact. The IRS makes sure the returns are correct. The total amount paid in taxes was extremely high and the smaller part of the bill amounted to just under $7.5Million.

            1. Allan,
” Trump paid millions in taxes, but blissful thinking makes you unable to understand that simple fact.”

Not according to his own tax returns that were just made public by the NYT.

He didn’t pay squat for nearly 15 years.

              1. Svelaz, you are not a financial genius. His tax bill was huge one part that was paid was just below $7.5 million. Do you dispute that ~$7.5M?

              1. Let us hear what you think he is hiding in his tax returns.

That will be a very difficult task because other documents that had to be released were far more revealing.

        1. Allan, showing everyone how obtuse you can be is not a good argument.

“ The ignorance of some. Joe Biden was VP and Hunter used such influence to earn millions of dollars. Joe sold out America to the Chinese and other enemies. Their fortune is linked to his high public office. ”

Trump IS president and his kids DO use that influence to earn millions. Ivanka, according to Trump’s own tax records obtained by the NYT show she got “consulting” fees by representing her business for Trump. Jared, uses his position as Trump’s son in law to get lucrative contracts.

If your really concerned about hunter’s dealings as highly suspect and criminal you should have no trouble criticizing the trump children too. If it’s perfectly legal for them to do it as you would say. Hunter Biden’s making some money is too.

          1. For years there has been talk about Biden’s actions that have made him wealthy. There is tangible evidence from many different sources even his own mouth. There are bank receipts and transcripts. All this money was earned while Biden was in office.

Trump earned his money before interring politics. If you have data to say that Trump used his influence like Biden used his in order to make money show the proof. You can’t because what you say isn’t true These Trump kids were successful long before Trump became President.

Just because you are a relative failure don’t assume everyone else fails like you did. Most people are smarter than you and are able to succeed.

    2. Psyops from these creepy intel geeks never stop. They run them on the job and then they run them when they retire.

We ought to retire some of them, permanently, from flapping their stupid gums

Starting with the Seditionist Cabal Kingpin, Brennan

      1. Mr. Kurtz,

“ Psyops from these creepy intel geeks never stop. They run them on the job and then they run them when they retire.”

Looks like you have been reading too many Tom Clancy novels. The excuses are becoming as ridiculous as the “scandal”. It’s hilarious.

        1. I haven’t read one of those since “Red October” like 20 some years ago

Psyops are happening all around you svelaz. They are little different than an advertising campaign except that advertising is what it plainly appears to be. Psyops must seem like something other than what they are to be most effective.

The goal is to influence mass behavior by whatever means. Go read up on it first if you want to chat.

  6. Look for the Democratic donor moderator on Thursday to ask tough questions of Biden, like “What flavor of milk shake did you have today?”
Media, Tech and the Democrats in total coordination. Truly amazing to behold the slow drip of the demise of the US.

  7. You investigate and report on both sides, including a demand that Hunter and Joe Biden respond to these specific emails as well as conflicting past statements. Sometimes the simplest things are the most difficult. Surely you jest! Journalism is ON ITS LAST BREATH IN AMERICA.

The best solution for this instance would be for shiff to be voted out of congress.

  8. Just one question, Jonathan: How do you know the FBI and DNI Director have got this right? Both have been wrong in the past, and the FBI (especially back during the Red Scare and Vietnam days has lied its balls off per Hoover’s vendettas/paranoias). Meanwhile, good posts. Stick with this. This is your best point: “demand that Hunter and Joe Biden respond to these specific emails as well as conflicting past statements.”

    1. “ demand that Hunter and Joe Biden respond to these specific emails as well as conflicting past statements.”

They are not required to. Just as Trump isn’t required to respond. Trump desperately wants a distraction from his string of bad stories. He’s just regurgitating his 2016 strategy against Biden. That’s not a good sign.

  9. Steve Bannon’s “Hunter” story is really about an aging rage-demented POTUS with Federal indictments lurking who is losing his grip on “power” and a desperate bunch of his inner grifters fearing unemployment and slinging stuff at the wall to see what sticks. Too late.

      1. Oh, c’mon man! You know those video clips are Russian disinformation! Joe Biden is the bestest, mostest qualified, and smartest guy to ever to run for president in all of human history. Besides, orange man bad!!!

  10. Everyone knows the rules by know. DNC lies, misinformation, and disinformation are always not only fully permitted, but are encouraged and rewarded. But the truth from any source that threatens the Deep State criminals is always punished, censored, and silenced. The media pressitutes’ model is Communist China. And their holy savior is China Joe, China’s Manchurian Candidate.

  11. Adam Schiff should be banned from Twitter/Facebook due to lies, fantasies of Russians. Spreading lies from the so called ex intelligence/CIA officials who many are being investigated for what they did to Trump on the false Russia/Ukraine stories. Some may go to Jail, I hope. But Twitter/Facebook will look the other way.

Journalism you mentioned, it died years ago, in Obama error.

  12. That they actually signed that letter is another one of those ‘the country’s in the best of hands’ moments. What I cannot figure out about American life is how we have just about the most productive economy on Earth while having such inept slipping-clutch public institutions (run by people who lie as readily as normal people breathe). It’s as if every jerk in America goes into the public sector.

    1. Pretty much. I don’t think he’s advanced one thesis in the last four years that wasn’t subsequently discredited.

  13. According to Hunter Biden’s text msgs to his father, Hunter has an Weiner problem, too. His computer was given over to the Delaware State Troopers, who reportedly have passed it on to the FBI.

  14. There are no journalists anymore. Only elite reporters who have been taught by their socialist professors that they know best and not to let the facts get in the way of overthrowing’s the President you don’t like.
