Daily Beast Editor Calls For “Humiliation” and “Incarceration” For Trump Supporters

We have been discussing the rising threats against Trump supporters, lawyers, and officials in recent weeks from Democratic members are calling for blacklists to the Lincoln Project leading a a national effort to harass and abuse any lawyers representing the Republican party or President Trump. Others are calling for banning those “complicit” from college campuses while still others are demanding a “Truth and Reconciliation Commission” to “hold Trump and his enablers accountable for the crimes they have committed.” Now, Daily Beast editor-at-large Rick Wilson has added his own call for “humiliation,” “incarceration” and even ritualistic suicides for Trump supporters in an unhinged, vulgar column. Wilson declared “[o]nly exposure, pain, humiliation, and (inshallah) incarceration will lead to a moment of reckoning for the GOP.”

 Not surprisingly, Wilson is a key advisor to the Lincoln Project which was blocked recently on Twitter for abusive doxxing efforts directed at Republican lawyers.  His column captures the level of hateful rhetoric fueled by the Lincoln Project, which is funded by thousands of lawyers despite its attacks on fellow members of the bar for their representation.

“Remember, the Trump GOP is shorn of all ideological and philosophical pretense, and even when Trump leaves office, it’s not over. ‘His cultists’ reign of terror will shape elected GOP members as long as he and his foul spawn walk the earth unpunished. Only exposure, pain, humiliation, and (inshallah) incarceration will lead to a moment of reckoning for the GOP. It should start at the top and work down from there.”

Wilson notes that he is not interested in the “reconciliation” part of “truth and reconciliation,” declaring a “hearty f— no” to people calling for reconciliation. Inside he called for the “motherf—ers” to consider “seppuku.”

Just as I recently criticized Trump counsel Joe diGenova for his rhetoric about drawing and quartering Chris Krebs, I will assume that Wilson is not seriously calling for ritualistic suicides.  However, he is clearly calling for retaliation against Trump supporters as the Lincoln Project has carried out in its campaign.

Others like Elie Mystal, The Nation’s justice correspondent, have called for a “Truth and Reconciliation Commission” to investigate “[a]ll of these moral and ethical failures … and that’s before we get into the actual statutory crimes potentially committed by Trump, his administration, his enablers, and his family.”

The call for a commission to establish the truth of past controversies is ironic given Mystal’s abuse of teenager Nicholas Sandmann.  We previously discussed the case and the example of one such segment involving “Above the Law” writer Joe Patrice in his interview with Mystal, where he attacked this 16 year old boy as a racist.  Patrice agreed with Mystal’s objections to Sandmann wearing his “racist [MAGA] hat.” They also objected to Sandmann doing interviews trying to defend himself with Mystal deriding how this “17-year-old kid makes the George Zimmerman defense for why he was allowed to deny access to a person of color.” Putting aside the fact that Sandmann was not denying “access to a person of color,”  Mystal and Patrice were comparing this high school student to a man who was accused of murdering an unarmed African American kid and even assailing his effort to clear his name as the media continued to label him a racist. Mystal continued to slam Sandmann in postings on “Above the Law.”  In one such posting, Mystal derided Sandmann for filing for defamation. Various media outfits later apologized or settled with Sandmann for their false reporting.

What is most striking about these views is how disconnected they are to the actual election.  Instead a “blue wave” and the widely predicted Democratic takeover of both houses, Republicans picked up a sizable number of seats in the House where Democrats have been reduced to the thinnest margin since World War II. The Republicans may retain the Senate and won handily in many state races across the country. Roughly 74 million people voted for Trump. I was not one of them, but that is roughly half of this nation. Yet, these writers continue to write as if the nation is now unified in rejecting the policies and priorities of the Trump Administration. It is the distortive effect of existing entirely in siloed media spaces where an alternative reality can be maintained and fostered.

My greatest concern is how the media remain detached not only from roughly half of the country but from reality. It has decided that it will cater to literally one half of the country and foster openly biased narratives of what is still unfolding in this country. As I previously discussed, the loss is considerable since the public now has a deep and widening distrust for the media.  The result is that our media is no longer viewed as a place for citizens to resolve questions over things like contested elections. There is only rage where reason once prevailed.

    President-elect Biden’s bipartisanship is one of his most promising strengths. Appointing Deb Haaland (D-NM) as Secretary of the Interior would be another good step forward on the path of healing. Spearheading a retaliatory GOP witch-hunt is a bad idea for all concerned.

              I think you set an extremely low bar ,quite contrary to the “following an exceptionally rigorous vetting” you say Biden went through.

                  Hopefully the slim chance of victory for Trump will play out. If not we will have to face the left’s destruction of American ideals and watch as the Democrats weaken America shipping jobs overseas with a stagnant economy.

                  Durham will be special prosecutor who according to the left cannot be removed or it would be obstruction of justice. But the left is hypocritical for I doubt Durham will be permitted to do very much if anything.

                  Low bar for the American people for the next 4 years unless… You ain’t black if you vote for Trump.

    1. Yes, a retaliatory GOP witch-hunt would be harmful. But so would ignoring wrongdoing that would be identified in a non-retaliatory investigation.

      I read a comment elsewhere that compared it to the need to clean a wound for it to heal properly. Ignoring wrongdoing in the name of bipartisanship or healing is contrary to what’s needed.

        Would it apply only to domestic and international wrongdoings alleged of the Trump Administration, or would it include wrongdoings alleged of past administrations, the Obama and Clinton administrations not excepted?

I don’t have anything specific in mind, other than appointing an ethical A.G. and leaving the DOJ room to do its job without political interference, filing charges if they believe that crimes have been committed and the statute of limitations hasn’t expired, including criminal acts by previous administrations and by current or former members of Congress from both parties.

I lived in almost all of the Western States and have yet to see a qualified candidate selected by either party. Poor forest management, range land, and public or private concerns can’t come to a consensus, it’s always eliminate this or that faction. Nevada, Utah and other near by States get little benefit from Federal Management of their lands and suffers depleted development and low taxation.

    On Friday 16 U.S. Attorneys signed a letter to Barr saying they could ‘not’ verify Trump’s claims of election fraud.   12. Trump’s Election Claims Boomerang In Georgia

    Trump has carried on for weeks attacking Georgia’s election results where he lost to Joe Biden by some 12,000 votes. That margin has held despite a recount Trump hoped would reveal extensive fraud. ..It did not..! So now Trump has taken to attacking Georgia’s Republican Governor, Brian Kemp and Republican Secretary Of State, Brad Raffensperger. They have been singled-out as ‘complicit in the fraud’; drawing waves of anger from Trump’s Georgia base.

    But as widely reported Georgia will be the scene of a January run-off election deciding control of the U.S. Senate. The Republican incumbent Senators, David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler find themselves trapped by Trump’s lies. They must parrot the lies to pacify Trump’s Georgia base. But already that base has indicated they may not vote in said run-off. Because if the elections are rigged, with rigged voting systems, ‘what’s the point in voting’?

    Republican party leaders of Georgia are deeply concerned. If they tell voters election machinery is legitimate, they’re contradicting Trump and rightwing media. Yet telling voters to vote with ‘rigged machinery’ sounds ridiculous. This complicated situation illustrates how Trump’s lies create a dangerous web that entangles even Republicans.

    Yet Johnathan Turley feels that conservatives are the victims of ‘liberal oppression’. ..Go figure..!

    Suppose “Steve” wants to manipulate the U.S. elections — perhaps by purchasing a voting machines company with a large share of the U.S. market. However, he cannot make such an investment because he’s considered “dirty.” So he finds a “clean” proxy, call her “Mary.” Steve makes the investment through Mary, and now has his “influence.”

    In this scenario, “Mary” (the “clean” proxy) is “UBS Securities,” a Swiss investment bank. “Steve” (the dirty actor) is “UBS Securities CO LTD” — an entity that is 75% owned by the Chinese government.

    Why is this important? Because in the *fall of 2020*, UBS Securities LLC — the entity 75% owned by the Chinese government — invested $400 million in Staple Street Capital. And, wait for it: Staple Street Capital owns Dominion Voting Systems (DVS).

    So here’s the upshot, without the obfuscating links: The Chinese government owns a large (majority?) share of the company (DVS) whose voting machines were widely used in the November election.

    Did somebody say “corruption?” “Fraud?” “Foreign influence in the U.S. elections?” (Payback for Biden?)

The central theme of Turley’s article had to do with un American calls for retribution against those to whom you disagree politically. It has nothing to do with a perceived predicament of the Republicans in the upcoming run off in Georgia. It also points out the pervasive characteristic of the Democratic Party. HYPOCRICY!!!
