The Washington Post Gives Biden “Four Pinocchios” For Statement on New Georgia Election Law

The Washington Post has issued a rare rebuke to President Joe Biden over his statement about the new Georgia election law.  As noted earlier, Biden’s statistical claims about the crisis on the Southern border have also been challenged by news organizations as false or misleading. However, one statement on the Georgia law stood out for many when Biden declared “What I’m worried about is how un-American this whole initiative is. It’s sick. It’s sick … deciding that you’re going to end voting at five o’clock when working people are just getting off work.” The statement was repeated in an official White House release from the President. The is untrue and the Post awarded Four Pinocchios.  However, one other statement in the article was equally surprising.

The election law actually does the opposite of what Biden claimed. It guaranteed that, at a minimum, polls would remain open for a full work day while allowing the extended hours commonly used on election day.  The prior law was ambiguous and would have allowed earlier closing of polling places.

So the new law requires polling places to be open “beginning at 9:00 AM and ending at 5:00 PM.” However, the law also allows individual counties to set the hours anywhere between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.

The Post went further to note that the law, according to all of the experts consulted, has “the net effect … to expand the opportunities to vote for most Georgians, not limit them.”

The statement is in sharp contrast to Washington Post columnist Jennifer Rubin’s public criticism of “PBS NewsHour” correspondent Yamiche Alcindor for referring to the crisis in an otherwise fawning question at the same press conference. Rubin effectively criticized Alcindor for diverting from the approved narrative and told her to “see the Washington Post’s report of data.”  The data does not support Biden’s statements on the crisis and this is one Post column that is unlikely to be highlighted by Rubin or the White House.

  1. It’s a wonder only four. As a Socialist the nose length factor must have been much longer.

  2. Jonathan: I think you, not President Biden, should get “Four Pinocchios” for misrepresenting Georgia’s new voter suppression law dubbed “Jim Crow 2.0”. Trump lost the Georgia election but then tried to get Secretary of State Raffensperger to change the votes. Raffensperger refused because he said the election “safe, secure and honest”. That should have been the end of it. But the Republican controlled legislature decided otherwise. They knew that Georgia has now become a swing state and if Black voters, who provided edge for Biden, were allowed to vote in vast numbers Democrats would continue to win. So what did they do? They found a solution for a problem that doesn’t exist. In the preamble to SB202, the new voter suppression bill, the Republican controlled legislature states: “There was a significant lack of confidence in Georgia’s election systems, with many electors concerned about…allegations of rampart voter fraud;…” Baloney! There was no evidence of “rampant” voter fraud because after several re-counts Raffensperger couldn’t find any! Naturally, Donald Trump loves the new Georgia election law and for good reason. Had it been in place last year Trump would probably have won.

SB202, among other things: (1) requires a voter ID to apply for an absentee ballot–a difficult task for most voters, especially elderly Black voters.; (2) cuts off absentee ballot applications 11 days before an election; (3) limits the number of absentee ballot drop boxes (widely used by Black voters last year) and (4) makes it a crime to handout water or food to voters waiting in long lines to vote in the hot sun. And crucially the new law strips the Secretary of State of authority over elections. Pay back time for Raffensperger who certified the election for Biden. In the most significant change SB202 establishes a new Republican controlled Election Commission with the power to remove local election officials and change local voting rules. The new law also prohibits out-of-precinct voting. This is important because many Black voters often move frequently and, for convenience, vote in their old precincts.

Now this brings us to the issue of changes to voting hours and your claim President Biden misstated the new law. He didn’t. SB202 requires polling stations to be open from 9am to 5pm. That is a significant burden for many working voters, especially Black voters who often hold 2 to 3 jobs and can’t get time off to vote. The law also allows local election officials to extend voting hours from 7am to 7pm. But the ultimate decision rests with the Election Commission dominated by Republicans because they appoint the Commission members. For example, suppose a local election official in Fulton county is faced with long lines of predominantly Black voters and wants to extend the voting hours. He or she knows that such action would require the approval of the Republican controlled Election Commission. I know what I would do if I were a local Georgia election official. Don’t rock the boat just to accommodate Black voters. So the possibility of extending voting hours is meaningless because of the rest of the new SB202 voting restrictions designed to suppress the Black vote. You are extremely naive if you believe otherwise!

    1. Gee, i’m really impressed with your ignorance. “Recounts” do not rectify voter fraud. They rectify any count errors. I suspect that the new law will be challenged on up the appellate level. When justices rule on it, I’ll look the other way while you stew in your own politcal garbage.

    2. You just can’t get it right can you. In every state there is a distance from the entry to the polling place that you cannot be approached and campaigned to vote for a candidate. Before you get to that point there are the signs and people that want to talk about their candidate-you can get their water with their candidates photo before that no campaign zone. The campaigners cannot enter that no campaign zone to give you a bottle of water with their candidates photo on it…plain and simple. The bill allows the polling places to provide water in the no campaign zone. This is fair and proper. Stop what you are doing and consider what the bill is saying.

    3. RE:”SB202, among other things: (1) requires a voter ID to apply for an absentee ballot–a difficult task for most voters, especially elderly Black voters.; Leave out the word ‘black’ and your point might be well made. However, ‘the soft bigotry of low expectations’ which drives the Democrat agenda demands playing the race card whenever deemed advantageous.

  3. Turley says: “this is one Post column that is unlikely to be highlighted by Rubin or the White House.”

Now, you see, I would not point out someone else’s hypocrisy when you yourself are an abject hypocrite. When you start commenting on the defamation lawsuits against Fox News, you will have the moral standing to call out another’s. We see you for who you are. It’s pathetic.

    1. I am waiting for the children that are not in crisis at the border to be placed on Airforce ONE and flown to the White House for the annual Easter Egg Roll.

  4. Why should Biden let the truth get in the way? It’s not like very many of his voters will check the veracity of his statements.

  5. O’Biden, I would have more empathy for him would it not be for his fleeting thoughts and ability to forget his faux pãs in less that 2 minutes. Now he has stated that the migrant children that arrived yesterday can be released to a relative or caregiver immediately. He is able to do so by waving the NCIC & LOCAL background that was mandated after in 2016 Obama’s immigration team sent kids to a couples sex trafficking farm that also was also it’s own farmers farmers market In town. How unfortunate that these children will be scarred as they will never forget how their protectors released them to American pedophiles as they are lining up to take them home. This situation is a nightmare for them already and I can’t believe that an administration would risk subjecting these adolescents to it again. Now we know exactly sub standard human dwells in the Capital and I am afraid to say out loud that monsters do exist, they all live in Washington DC..

  6. Mr Turley,

The new law allows the state to usurp local control of the elections process. Therefore, the GOP-run state government has the power to take over Fulton County’s process and force the polls to close at 5pm, and as you know, the polls closed at 7pm in Fulton County in 2020. Therefore, there actually is a world in which what Biden said is true: the state now can come in and force predominantly Democratic counties to close earlier than they did in 2020, no?

The main gripe we Fulton County residents have is that the partisans in the state house now can take over local control!

Please revise your above analysis accordingly.

    A Fulton County independent voter.

    1. “the polls closed at 7pm in Fulton County in 2020”
No they didn’t and that is the problem. They are tape continuing to count ballots long after observers had been sent away and that is very bad. Whether they cheated or not [and I suspect they did] they destroyed the belief in the integrity and honesty of the vote.

Just follow the damned law and there won’t be problems like this!

      1. You’re confusing when the polls close (to voters) and when the ballot tabulations stop. Those have never been the same thing.

        “observers had been sent away”

        No they weren’t.

        “Just follow the damned law”

Fulton County did follow the law.

    2. Anonnowfultoncountyvoter, the election rules are set by the state legislatures not the counties. According to your assessment if a county wanted to add 50 days to the polls being open the legislature should not be allowed to enforce the rules. Dumb and dumber.

      1. State law gives certain discretion to counties. What is necessary in Atlanta may not be necessary in Valdosta.

That discretion does not include extending polling by 50 days. It does include extending the hours that the polls are open from 5pm to 7pm.

The point I was trying to make is that the new law allows the state to take over a county’s elections process, thereby taking away a county’s discretion. A purely partisan move would be to take over Fulton County and change the hours from 7pm to 5pm. It is not hard to imagine the effect such a change would have. Fewer voting opportunities in a Democratic county.

    3. If you have had issues with elections in your county , the problems almost all reside with the management team at the Fulton County Board of Elections

Georgia law lays a number of significant election responsibilities at the feet of county authorities. Some of those include:
“To select and equip polling places for use in primaries and elections.”
“To purchase, except voting machines, preserve, store, and maintain election equipment of all kinds, including voting booths and ballot boxes and to procure ballots and all other supplies for primaries and elections.”
“To appoint poll officers and other officers to serve in primaries and elections.”
“To make and issue such rules, regulations, and instructions… for the guidance of poll officers, custodians, and electors in primaries and elections.”
“To instruct poll officers and others in their duties, calling them together in meetings whenever deemed advisable, and to inspect systematically and thoroughly the conduct of primaries and elections in the several precincts of his or her county to the end that primaries and elections may be honestly, efficiently, and uniformly conducted.”

    4. “the GOP-run state government has the power to take over Fulton County’s process and force the polls to close at 5pm”

Try reading the actual bill. The State does not mandate that all county polling locations close at 5 PM.

“Contrary to what Biden claims, the bill actually expands early voting time:

One of the biggest changes in the bill would expand early voting access for most counties, adding an additional mandatory Saturday and formally codifying Sunday voting hours as optional. Counties can have early voting open as long as 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., or 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at minimum. If you live in a larger metropolitan county, you might not notice a change. For most other counties, you will have an extra weekend day, and your weekday early voting hours will likely be longer.”

What the bill does do is help prevent the same fraud that occurred in Georgia in November and January.

Which is what Stacey Abrams & Co are truly worried about. Stacey should focus on staying away from the chip aisle at the Kroger, and cease eating chicken and waffles altogether.

Her food addiction and subsequent morbid obesity sets a horrible example for young black girls.

  7. There trying hard but it’s a little to late for the Washington Post to get their readership back. The twisting of the narrative was present before the election. Where were they then. Now they try to present themselves as the defender of the people. The only thing that will suffice is a complete edition dedicated to their retractions. Just one edition may not be enough.

  8. Have to wonder why JT never wrote a column about “The Washington Post Gives Trump “Four Pinocchios” For Statement on …”

      1. Anonymous talking to Anonymous. The doctor would observe him talking to himself in public. What might be the suggested treatment? The taking away of his keyboard?

        1. Yes, it’s probably the same guy. Editorial masturbation was first diagnosed by S. Meyer, for which he should get the Nobel. Unfortunately, Dr. Meyer believes the condition is incurable.

          1. Diogenes, you have an awfully low standard for the Nobel.

As for “editorial masturbation,” Allan (S. Meyer) does as much of that as any anonymous commenter, and John Say does even more.

        2. Multiple people comment anonymously. This wasn’t one person talking to himself.

A doctor would observe that you like to troll. What might be the suggested treatment?

          1. Anonymous, I didn’t say only one person talking to himself. There were two Anonymouses talking to themselves and now there are three. Has anyone noticed that most all of the Anonymouses come from the same side of the political spectrum, there syntax patterns are the same and they always defend each other. Just coincidence? Curious indeed. I can hear it now. He can’t say things like that about us, I mean me.

            1. You said “The doctor would observe him talking to himself in public.”

“most all of the Anonymouses come from the same side of the political spectrum, there syntax patterns are the same and they always defend each other. Just coincidence?”

    1. Anon at 3:25, you might be correct. Maybe Trump knew he was playing fast and lose with the truth. The difference is that your boy Joe doesn’t know he is lying. He just searches down in his head for the same propaganda he has been spouting for fifty years. “There going to put you all back in chains”. “I scared Cornpop out of the pool”. “Asking voters for an ID is the same as Jim Crow. “When I sign this bill we’ll have them N——-s voting for us for the next 200 years”. Oh wait, that was another race baiting hero of the Democratic Party, Lyndon Johnson. Sorry, it’s easy to get the two of them mixed up. If it worked for Lyndon why shouldn’t it work for good old Joe. If you don’t have a good answer holler RACISM to cover your a—. The days of cheap tricks have passed. Times have changed Joe. Times have changed.

  9. Yesterday New York reported 8,022 new cases of Wuhan Virus and Florida reported only 3,374.

For some reason our despicable national media [and federal government] insist that it is Florida that is doing it wrong.

“China is missing 500,000,000-7000,000,000 tax payers, potential military and labor under forty years old because of their famous One Child Only Policy. Their labor force began to shrink for the first time two years ago and their demographic dividend will certainly fade. Theoretically China could fix this issue with immigration but they would have to annex Indonesia completely, three times. And besides they are xenophobic. Their decline will be slow and certain and cannot be reversed. Regarding their apparent success in all categories, consider the source of the data.”

    China is Doomed

    1. “China Flu, 2020” was deliberately released by China, from its Wuhan Institute of Virology, to reduce its population of elderly people as China is doomed by its one-child policy from the past. China will move further in the future to reduce its elderly population. China’s population is terminally out of balance by its overabundance of old people – China has no workforce or Social Security and Medicare to address this segment of the population.

    2. “China Flu, 2020” was released 9 months prior to the U.S. presidential election to support the malleable Joe Biden and remove President Donald J. Trump, China’s adversary and nemesis.

The Chinese Communist Party is not hindered by law or morality; by brutality and violence.

They are merely tools; means to an end.

  11. Are you deliberately not seeing the forest for the trees?

The communists (liberals, progressives, socialists, democrats, RINOs) have been cheating in elections for decades. They have been importing parasitic, unassimilable, foreign, hyphenate communist voters to obtain their fair share of “free stuff” purchased with the white man’s money, dilute the American population into extinction and VOTE AMERICANS OUT. “Fundamentally transforming” means diluting Americans out of America. They have been facilitated by American women who have become faux men and stopped making Americans, causing the American fertility rate to enter a “death spiral” as more Americans die than are born – where’s the future in not being here? No one said women were not smart, they said women need to make Americans. Duuuuuh!!!

Repeal the 19th Dumbmendment and start making Americans again.

Illegal deportation is as legal and moral as illegal importation – illegal emigration is as legal and moral as illegal immigration.

The one thing America lacks and is dire need of is George Washington 2, The Sequel.

American needs a leader with a pair of —-s to take George’s country back.

  12. This is the second time this morning I’ve been stunned by random acts of journalism. If a Democrat has to be called out by the WaPo for fake news, somebody must be planning a coup.

I was hoping for Joe to stick around because I was so concerned about Vice President BLM. I’m now looking at events on the southern border and realizing there isn’t a spit’s worth of difference between Madame Mao and Corn Pop. A President who gets his depends and his mask mixed up is a problem. A VP who hates America and white people–unless they’re rich communists on the West Coast–is about as bad.

Could America’s luck get any worse?

      1. When I saw Joe caving to the hard left, I got very concerned. If they kill the filibuster, I’m pegging secession at a 70% probability.

And then of course, there’s the banks. Maybe I should make that 100%.

        1. I will wait on secession but I am hoping states will start reasserting their sovereignty in many areas. Telling the feds to butt out when it comes to Covid passports and perhaps prosecuting federal officials for criminal violations of state law would be a good start. I don’t see much difference between sending plague victims into nursing homes on one hand and feds recklessly pushing Covid-infected illegal immigrants onto public transportation and into communities on the other hand. Also, the feds don’t have the authority to immunize illegals from criminal trespass on private property.

I think we may have to re-think the authority of the Supreme Court as well. They just ruled that Hillary didn’t have to participate in normal discovery in a judicial proceeding. Why? They didn’t say and I suspect that there is nothing they could say based on current law that could justify that decision. More recently the Court cowered and refused to render a decision in any of the cases touching on election fraud. I don’t doubt they will stick their noses into the tent again when they think it is safe on issues of immigration and voting, but it may be time for the states to tell the Court we don’t care what you think. You whiffed on issues that could have settled many doubts in this country and you failed abysmally. Washington State has done a runaround on the Janus decision and some district courts have appeared to basically ignore Court decisions. The Court is losing its prestige and authority. Time to ignore it when it meddles in some issues.

          1. secession or civil war will have to reset the economy. not reset it the way Klaus Schwabe and the Davos boys wants it, but reset it from financial capitalism to industrial capitalism, reset it from billionaire oligarchy to more genuine democracy, reset it in a way that will make the difficulties of war count. the question of our fundamental social organization is at hand.

the next big fight has to be not over one little pet issue or another, it has to be over the big thing that affects everyone, economic systems. and at the heart of ours is debt. both public and private.

our current system sucks, basically the banks run everything. most of all they run American politics.
they use their political control to oppress us, screw things up on purpose. they love social chaos, it keeps the workers off balance.
but our system is a rentier system of continuous exploitation of banks in every sector, it’s unfair to people, and there are better models.

read Michael Hudson, it’s worth it. all his books. read this interview or listen to it, it’s a little confusing, but it’s important

he’s an economist, with a long tenure in private finance, public finance, and public policy. he is the only guy worth reading now on economics. everything else is a waste of time and does not grasp the entire picture.

if you watch or read this selection from Hudson, be sure to get to the bottom. HE SAYS not me, HE SAYS, the western plutocracy is seriously considering war on China-Russia to protect its rackets. they don’t care how many of us die in a nuclear exchange, they don’t need workers now anyways. he says that.

so, no worries about collateral damage there OR HERE/ they will have the AI and robots to replace us and when they are sure of it, they are gonna pull the trigger. Ultimately, our question will be, do we pull the trigger on our plutocrats first, before they envelope the world in global nuclear war, or not.

does this sound crazy? Hudson worked for Herman Kahn. He knows a thing or two about how these guys think.

a massive restructuring of public and private debt is at the heart of what must be done. but it will not be done without a fight. elections controlled by plutocrats will NOT get it done. and without restructuring public and private debt, the future is dim. dim for us, not the plutocrats. they think they got it all in hand……. but do they?

            sal sar

            1. Harry Dent says a market swoon and banking calamity is 80% likely by June. I always take predictions like that with a grain of salt, but Harry has been right a lot, and June or not, it will happen. Too many excess reserves and too many Democrats in charge. Whenever it happens, I’m sure I’ll get squashed like a bug, and I fear the millennials will draw the wrong conclusions from it. We’ll see.

    1. If a Democrat has to be called out by the WaPo for fake news, somebody must be planning a coup.

I had a similar thought. I doubt Biden even knew what he was saying. What’s more likely is this first 100 days are to get Biden to inflict as much damage as possible and then Harris et al come to the rescue with the 25th amendment. By then the damage will be done.

      1. Yes, they may be keeping Joe around to scapegoat the old white guy for any banking collapse. I doubt that dog will hunt though. She’ll just make things worse.

        1. She’ll just make things worse.

It’s all a matter of perspective, or worldview. FWIW, I agree with your perspective.

  13. It appears that they finally realize after that abortion of a press conference last week that their goal of keeping Biden around for 2 years so that Harris can run in 2023 and again in 2026, is unattainable.

So they’re going to start killing Joey D slowly and softly ahead of getting rid of him by this Fall. Then Kamala can ride in to the rescue to straighten out the mess that old Uncle Joe made of things. And all will be well in Bizarro world again.

Vegas has got large money on Biden being gone by November.

In other news. Every State that still has draconian mask mandates is seeing covid spikes. While the States that have opened back up are experiencing rapid declines.

    What was that about “science”?!

    1. “so that Harris can run in 2023 and again in 2026”

      Run for what?

She and Biden are in office until Jan. 20, 2025. There aren’t even any national elections in 2023.

      1. Keyword being “run”.

Have you failed to notice that politicians now start running for office (whether they are incumbents or not) at least a year and a half before the actual election?

So, Kamala will start running for reelection in late 2023.

Dementia Joe will be long gone by then. Apparently you agree.

But their hopes of keeping Corn Pop at least semi-comatose for 2 full years are now over. Therefore Harris will only have a chance for an additional 4 years.

      2. Did you say Kamala Harris?

Kamala Harris will NEVER be eligible to be U.S. president.

Kamala Harris’ parents were foreign citizens at the time of her birth.

        – A mere “citizen” could only have been President at the time of the adoption of the Constitution – not after.

        – The U.S. Constitution, Article 2, Section 1, Clause 5, requires the President to be a “natural born citizen,” which, by definition in the Law of Nations, requires “parents who are citizens” at the time of birth of the candidate and that he be “…born of a father who is a citizen;…”

        – Ben Franklin thanked Charles Dumas for copies of the Law of Nations which “…has been continually in the hands of the members of our Congress, now sitting,…”

        – “The importance of The Law of Nations, therefore, resides both in its systematic derivation of international law from natural
law and in its compelling synthesis of the modern discourse of natural jurisprudence with the even newer language of political
economy. The features help to explain the continuing appeal of this text well into the nineteenth century among politicians,
international lawyers and political theorists of every complexion,” Law of Nations Editors Bela Kapossy and Richard Whatmore.

        – The Jay/Washington letter of July, 1787, raised the presidential requirement from citizen to “natural born citizen” to place a “strong check” against foreign allegiances by the commander-in-chief.

        – Every American President before Obama had two parents who were American citizens.

        – The Constitution is not a dictionary and does not define words or phrases like “natural born citizen” as a dictionary, while the Law of Nations, 1758, did.

        Law of Nations, Vattel, 1758

        Book 1, Ch. 19

        § 212. Citizens and natives.

“The citizens are the members of the civil society; bound to this society by certain duties, and subject to its authority, they equally participate in its advantages. The natives, or natural-born citizens, are those born in the country, of parents who are citizens. As the society cannot exist and perpetuate itself otherwise than by the children of the citizens, those children naturally follow the condition of their fathers, and succeed to all their rights. The society is supposed to desire this, in consequence of what it owes to its own preservation; and it is presumed, as matter of course, that each citizen, on entering into society, reserves to his children the right of becoming members of it. The country of the fathers is therefore that of the children; and these become true citizens merely by their tacit consent. We shall soon see whether, on their coming to the years of discretion, they may renounce their right, and what they owe to the society in which they were born. I say, that, in order to be of the country, it is necessary that a person be born of a father who is a citizen; for, if he is born there of a foreigner, it will be only the place of his birth, and not his country.”

Ben Franklin letter December 9, 1775, thanking Charles Dumas for 3 copies of the Law of Nations:

“…I am much obliged by the kind present you have made us of your edition of Vattel. It came to us in good season, when the circumstances of a rising state make it necessary frequently to consult the law of nations. Accordingly that copy, which I kept, (after depositing one in our own public library here, and sending the other to the College of Massachusetts Bay, as you directed,) has been continually in the hands of the members of our Congress, now sitting, who are much pleased with your notes and preface, and have entertained a high and just esteem for their author…”

  14. The sheer amount of lies and straight up misinformation coming from the dems in our Congress at this point in time would make Mao blush. All I can say is that unlike in revolutionary China, we are all much more well informed, we have access to a world wide web, and many of us are armed. If the American Democratic party survives the next three years, it’ll be a miracle. They have dug themselves a very impressive grave.
