Fairfax Board Member Rails Against The Dangers Of “Excessive Individualism” In High School Graduation Speech

There has been a great deal of controversy over the graduation address of Fairfax County school board member Abrar Omeish to the Justice High School in Falls Church on June 7th. In her remarks to the graduates, Omeish praised a teacher who made social activism part of her class and warned the graduates that they are going into a world filled with racism and white supremacy. However, what really struck an admittedly libertarian chord with me was the third danger that she warned about: “excessive individualism.”  Like free speech, individualism is now being presented as a danger rather than a strength in our society.

Omeish is a strong speaker who impressively moved between English, Spanish, and Arabic in her address. However, many parents objected in Fairfax (where I live) to the content of the remarks. She labeled those who do not agree with the activism agenda as effectively opposing anti-racism values:  “You understand that social justice is only political for those that can afford to ignore it. You understand that ‘neutral’ is another word for complicit. And you have made a choice to take a stand.” She encourage the students to remain activists and pursue “jihad” because “we struggle with human greed, racism, extreme versions of individualism and capitalism, white supremacy, growing wealth gaps, disease, climate crisis, extreme poverty amidst luxury and waste right next door. And the list goes on.”

As we have previously discussed, “jihad” in Arabic does not mean violent acts despite the common view of the term. It is a reference to good acts or public service. There is no basis to suggest that this speech was encouraging violent action.  Rather, she declared “Every part of your being may scream in rage at the ways others have wronged you,” but “let compassion for your fellow human beings, not anger or rage — and believe me this is hard to do — fuel you.”

What stood out for me was the reference to “extreme versions of individualism.”  There was a time when individualism was viewed as a core protection and value in our society. Now it is often denounced as a harmful value that resists more collective and communal priorities from fighting Covid-19 to racial justice.

For years, academics have lashed out at individualism as a barrier for public policy goals like health care. On study on the “excesses of individualism” concluded, for example, “Libertarian individualism has created political isolation and prevents the evolution of democratic decision making and real partnerships in healthcare.” The case against individualism has been made in books ranging from Robert N. Bellah’s book Habits of the Heart: Individualism and Commitment in American Life, Amitai Etzioni’s The Spirit of Community. Writers like Nick Romeo insist:

Radical individualism today retains this highly circumscribed conception of government’s role; the body politic – above all – serves to protect the safety and the property of the individual. This is exemplified in a line made popular by the US president Ronald Reagan: the nine most terrifying words in the English language are: ‘I’m from the government and I’m here to help.’ It is a radical philosophy that suggests the political collective should have no role beyond the protection of the individual.

The old view of “rugged individualism” has become reactionary individualism for those arguing for a new collective consciousness.  The move against individualism brings to mind a quote from Pasternak’s Doctor Zhivago:

“The main misfortune, the root of all the evil to come, was the loss of confidence in the value of one’s own opinion. People imagined that it was out of date to follow their own moral sense, that they must all sing in chorus, and live by other people’s notions, notions that were being crammed down everybody’s throat.”

Few would argue that there is no value in collective action and policies.  Individualism is not anarchy. The concern is that the attacks on individualism are coinciding with attacks on values like free speech.  There is a movement to force adherence to accepted norms or values — and a corresponding intolerance for opposing views.

That is why the dire warning of Omeish for the young graduates to fear “excessive individualism” was so jarring for those of us who find believe that on certain rights, to paraphrase Oscar Wilde, nothing succeeds like excess.

  1. Jonathan: In objecting to Abrar Omeish’s graduation speech at Justice High School you say she warned the graduates against “excessive individualism” that you claim “is now being presented as a danger rather then a strength in our society”. You go on to say that “individualism” should be “viewed as a core protection and value in our society”. The concept of “rugged individualism” has been a mantra thru out the history of this country. From the portrayal of the pioneers moving west across the country to the image John Wayne conveyed in his movies we all learned that the “individual” was a prized icon of what this country stood for. If Native peoples stood in the way John Wayne quickly dispatched them. General Custer has also been held up as an example “rugged individualism”. Unfortunately, Custer’s go it alone attitude came up against the collective action of Native tribes at the Little Big Horn. Custer went down shouting: “Where did all these damn Indians come from?” In more recent movies like Dustin Hoffman in “Big Man Little Man” in Kevin Costner’s “Dancing with Wolves” we see a different side of how Native peoples operated best as a collective to provide sustenance and collective security.

The ultimate proponent of “rugged individualism” was Ayn Rand who is still worshipped by former Speaker Paul Ryan and Senator Ted Cruz. In her novels Rand pushed her philosophy of “objectivism” that held that unfettered capitalism was good and altruism is destructive. Rand’s philosophy has found a home in the GOP that opposes most government regulation as an unjustified interference with the right of the “individual” to run his affairs as he sees fit. Of course, Rand’s extreme views do not reflect the actual reality. of the history of the human race. We hominids did not get where we are by by being more ruthless, more competitive and more predatory. We still exist because we recognized that collective action works better to get results. That’s why our distant ancestors practiced the free exchange of ideas and inventions across continents and different racial and cultural groups. Had the hominid who discovered fire kept his invention to himself we probably would not be here today.

There are numerous examples of why collective action trumps “rugged individualism” when it comes to more rapid progress. During WW11 it took collective action by industry, the government and millions of Americans working together to assemble a fighting machine that defeated Nazi Germany and imperial Japan. The same is true when it came to fighting Covid-19. Collective action by nations around the world was required to effectively fight the coronavirus. But Trump and his GOP supporters opposed state pandemic restrictions and other other measures to control Covid. Even today we haven’t reached herd immunity because millions of Trump supporters refuse to get vaccinated. They believe requiring them to be vaccinated is a violation of their “individual” rights. Some people never learn the hard lesson that going it alone can produce deadly results.

Say what you will. “Excessive individualism” has never been a “core” value of societies. You can’t find the term any where in the Constitution. When you go into the DMV to renew your drivers license you acknowledge that society has a right to control who drives on the streets and highways–to make sure every driver is qualified. This protects other drivers and pedestrians form accidents and injuries. Except for the few who drive without a license most of us willingly accept these restraints on our “individual” rights because it’s part of the social contract–something we accept as part of the collective. Think about this as you re-read Ayn Rand’s “Atlas Shrugged”.

    1. It was “Little Big Man”. Without individuals the collective has nothing. Groupthink in the absence of strong individual leadership, is what makes collectives so dangerous.

  2. Homogenization is very much a Muslim/Desi value – those cultures and families absolutely live under codependence (not interdependence) and a hive mind mentality. It is yet another example of the disparity between Eastern and American values. Ironically, she really is imposing *her* values on the students, no question. The difference is that in this country, you may choose (at least for now) which values to adopt or espouse yourself, indeed that is what allowed her to make this speech in the first place, something that is completely lost on ignorant fools like her.

People from countries with not just fundamentalist religions, but fundamentalist governments, will probably never really jive with what America represents. It has been engrained generationally as in China or North Korea. It’s what modern dems, universally, are currently engaged in here. And it’s just baked in. Changing their minds would be as difficult as changing minds here on this blog in favor of abandoning Constitutional law. It’s a large part of why our current direction is supremely troubling.

As a personal pet peeve, as with the Southern countries, many of these folks don’t care about any of this anyway, they came here strictly to make money, at least initially, and send a great deal of it back to their countries of origin. There is zero desire for most to actually be an ‘American’.

    1. James says:

“many of these folks don’t care about any of this anyway, they came here strictly to make money, at least initially, and send a great deal of it back to their countries of origin. There is zero desire for most to actually be an ‘American’.”

You lifted this diatribe out of
      “Der internationale Jude”
      didn’t you?

  3. Yes the socialist, communist, collectivist attitudes say your individual freedom must be surrendered to the state. That’s why we have a 2nd Amendment, for the day our government decides she is correct.

    1. Democrats of a few decades ago would be called conservative–and racist–these days. They haven’t changed so much as everything else has.

    2. He’s figured it out enough to be a trumper for pay. What confuses me is why he’s staying in longer than his buddy Barr. Probably mandated by the home office, but still, sometimes you have to jump out of the burning car strictly for reasons of survival.

      1. Eb,

I read somewhere that Turley is writing a book. The real payoff on working for Fox is the opportunity to pitch it every time he appears on its network. So I don’t think he will allow his contract to expire until he reaps that financial windfall.

It’s interesting though that Turley has not come to his friend Barr’s defense over the allegations that the DOJ collected the phone records on Trump’s “enemies.” Perhaps he will when more facts emerge. I don’t necessarily believe there was misconduct in this case though Barr’s claim of ignorance seems a bit far-fetched. Fox News will not report this story as well- at least its prime time hosts have not. As I have noted before, Fox is no longer covering the “Big Lie” ever since it got sued for defamation. Indeed, it will not report any of Trump’s efforts to find fraud which explains why Turley has not appeared on the network for weeks.

        1. +100

Agreed, Jeff. There can be a pause before Turley comments on Barr’s situation because comment isn’t required just yet, and he’ll probably do it like he’s beginning to now…, picking off details in minutiae to divide and conquer. That seems to be Turley’s go to move (and my guess, how he justifies it to himself).

  4. Madam Omeish is exemplary: she is the reason that Muslims who by virtue of their faith must convert, extort or otherwise subordinate (kill) the infidels; and they cannot “honestly”, “truthfully” swear the oath of citizenship not only because the US Constitution is based on Judaeo-Christian values of equality and respect for each individual, but because in the Qu’ran and Hadith it is acceptable / in fact required to lie and deceive infidels / dimmni. The US Constitution is fundamentally inconsistent with the Qu’ran and Hadith. … These subversives should not be in the US let alone have any role in government at any level; they are an “invading enemy”.

    1. Lagman,

Round-up and deport I presume? And if no country will accept them, then what?

      1. I think JT is very wrong about those people.

But what to do with them?

Drop’em off back in their big Sand Box ME along with their low IQ blacks BLM/antifa friends? Sell their organs to China?

Hell, China is already harvesting them.

What does the God of Abraham suggest we do with Satan Worshippers of Islam?

        1. Maybe you’re a Satan worshipper to talk about your fellow Americans this way.

          1. This is NOT a “fellow American”; she certainly isn’t espousing American values of freedom. And if she is an immigrant, she CAN (and should) be deported for inciting insurrection against our country.

            1. She IS a fellow American. She was born here. That you dislike her opinions doesn’t change her citizenship.

She hasn’t done anything close to inciting insurrection.

        2. What does the God of Abraham suggest we do with Satan Worshippers of Islam?

Oh, I remember now, the God of Abraham tells the Pedos like Mohammad & his Pedo Islamic Followers that they’d be better off to tie a Millstone around their necks & jump in the Ocean.

So No, there is No Room in the USA for the Satan Worshipping Pedo Govt of Islam here. They should go from us in peace.

            1. What, no orginal thought or even cliff notes?

Hell I’ve still chores to do tonight.

I forget wear the doc is from Christoper Columbus & his chews a bit before 1492 that stated they’d rather Sail off the Phk’in edge of the Earth then have to deal those Islamic Nuts.

            2. I glanced at your link,

Looks like just more of that 1619 type BS.

BTW: ME Islamic States were Slavers back the & still are Buyers & Sellers of Slaves Today. Just look at the great job Obama did in Lybia with the return of Slave Blocks.

              1. They quoted several Founders. Interesting that you consider the Founders to be “like just more of that 1619 type BS.”

    2. What a bigot you are.

“the US Constitution is based on Judaeo-Christian values of equality and respect for each individual”

      These are not Judaeo-Christian values.

If you do not accept the right of Americans to practice Islam if they choose, then you do not value the First Amendment of our Constitution.

      1. “If you do not accept the right of Americans to practice Islam if they choose, then you do not value the First Amendment of our Constitution.”

The 1st Amd is among other things about Citizen’s Religious Rights, Islam is not a Religion, there are no Religious Right under Islamic Govt type, it’s an opposite type of the US’s Govt.

For those who swear an oath to Islam is to also to swear war against the US Govt (.) Obama, Brennan, etc….

        1. “Islam is not a Religion”

Why are you lying? Doesn’t your god command you not to lie?

          1. “Islam is not a Religion, there are no Religious Rights, (1st Amd), under Islamic Govt type, it’s an opposite type of the US’s Govt.”

Sharia Law, how far can they all shove it up the backsides?

            1. “ Sharia Law, how far can they all shove it up the backsides?”

Just as much as the Ten Commandments or biblical law.

Islam is certainly a religion, no different than Christianity or Scientology being a religion. Muslims have the exact same claims to religious liberty as Christians do. Religious liberty applies to every single recognized religion in this country, including Satanist religion.

              1. Svelaz,

Do you here now on this website Denounce Mohammad the Pedophile & his satanic Islamic Pedophile Govt?

If not then we all know you are Endorsing it.

                It’s up to you.

          2. Of course Islam isn’t a religion. It is and always has been a political movement intent on spreading their twisted agenda by way of slaughter and other forms of terror.

“Kill the Infidel wherever and whenever you can” is anything but a message of peace and it is in their “holy book” the Quran.

            1. JV correct. But there’s more: in the beginning Mohammad promoted his visions to provide a common focus to competing nomadic (“zero-sum” mentality) Arab tribes. He admired the unity of the Jewish tribes with their monotheist G-d. And, importantly his purpose was to reduce competition among the Arab tribes thus facilitating growth in his wife’s “trading business”. And, of course because he could not write the “visions” were sung; only first written 3 – 400 years after his death (anyone ever play “telephone” as a child ?) …

Now before some of you allow your “ignorance” to explode through your finger tips for starters get a copy of and read (its readable and has authoritative footnotes (which is why it could be a “starting point”)) Karen Armstrong’s “A History of G-d” (a NY Times Best Seller).

              1. “only first written 3 – 400 years after his death (anyone ever play “telephone” as a child ?)”

Just like the New Testament of the Christian Bible was written 40-100 years after Christ’s death.

                1. Anon, You are simply wrong. Paul started documenting Christ’s teachings while He and other disciples were alive. For starter – https://rsc.byu.edu/how-new-testament-came-be/first-century-sources-life-jesus

But perhaps more significant there is no comparability with the teachings of Jesus Christ to “love another” and “love your enemy”, and Islam’s hatred for all who do not submit to the theocracy of Islam. In Islam “peace” is only an obligation to other devote believers in the teachings of the Koran and Hadith.

Certainly Christianity has been used to “legitimize” much evil beginning with Constantine, the Holy See (throughout its history), European monarchies, etc. but such abuses do not alter Christ’s teachings.

Muhammad teaches “convert, extort, kill” for all dhimmi and for any Muslim to ignore those fundamental facets of the theocracy is to be a “bad muslim”, an apostate, a murtad. In the most generous thoughts non muslims might expect that the way to reconcile how such an apostate would still call themselves a “devote Muslim” is out of fear of the punishment for apostasy in Islam – death. … There is no equivalent punishment in Christianity; Christians can always return and ask G-d’s forgiveness.

            2. Curious if you could isolate specific points about Island that back up your assertion?

““Kill the Infidel wherever and whenever you can” ‘

I don’t believe that’s an actual quote from the Quran.

              eb

            3. If what you say is true. Then you have fi apply the same reasoning to Christianity. They too killed those who did not convert to their way of thinking. History is rife with such examples. So they too cannot be considered a religion.

      2. Anonymous………..It is not against the law for me or anyone to be a bigot. It IS against the law for the government to be bigoted.
The Bill of Rights was written to keep the government in check, and to preserve individual freedoms.
I can like or dislike whomever the hell I want. And they can dislike me. If I think someone’s “religion” is stupid and misogynistic, I have every right to say so. Period.

        1. Cindy:

Especially when you’ve got so much proof of it and its practitioners won’t accord you any right to practice yours. A pox on these lib fools – burka -clad or otherwise. I’m sure after Pearl Harbor these cretins would have been having tea and praising the emperor. Better a bigot than an obsequious fool.

        2. Straw man much?

No one said that it’s against the law for you to be a bigot, Cindy. Of course you’re free to say what you want (within the bounds of the law, which are broad), as am I.

          1. Anonymous………..I don’t know what a straw man is….but apparently, I am one?

      3. I can’t be a Bigot when it come to Islam as their own words, beliefs & actions are proof I & most others should have a serious dislike/distrust for any followers of Islam.

        1. Oky1…….good to see you….
Do you notice the Lefties never discuss the number of gays that the Muslims have killed?
They throw them off of buildings!! Nice religion, isn’t it?!

          1. Hi Cindy:)

There’s a difference between Moderate Islamist & Radical Islamist. A Moderate Islamist stands at the base of the building watching as the Radical Islamist throws the Gays off the Roof!.

But what the heck, if they Gays support the Islamic nuts who am I to interfere with the gays freedom?

            OT:

The other night we talked a bit about favorite music. That Randy Newman material made me remember some all the other great stuff also.

            1. Oky1………..thank you! He is such a neat guy.

Btw…….I loved your explanation of the difference between Radical and Moderate Muslims!

              1. Cindy, Oky1’s explanation equally applies to Christianity. There are moderate Christians and radical Christians too. Moderate Christians do the same with different methods.

                  1. The commandment, ‘thou shalt not kill’ is violated by Christians who kill. The Quran commands death for unbelievers and blasphemers and those who spread mischief in the land. There is no comparison and you know it.

                    1. The commandment: “Thou shalt not Murder”

                      Kill is defined different.

Get yourself a better bible, I suggest.

                  2. Hi Candy 🙂

                    2. Oky…..I have an old friend in Tulsa who has a small band country/rock. They’ve rehearsed every Tuesday night for 11 or 12 years. ……….and have never had a gig!! LOL….I may have told you before> He is one optimistic Okie!

                1. Svelaz,

I’ll ask you again, Do you Denounce here on this blog & elsewhere, right now, Mohammad the Pedophile & his Satanic Pedophile Islamic type govt/Quran & even Denounce all other Pedophiles in the world?

                2. Svelaz– You know, or ought to know, that is not true.

As for ‘moderate’ Muslims read “Why They Hate” by Brigitte Gabriel. Growing up in Lebanon she thought her family had a good relationship with their Muslim neighbors. Then one day they attacked. Something like that just happened in Israel when the savages in Gaza rained rockets down on civilians Muslims in Israel attacked their Jewish neighbors. In France see how well you will fare in one of the banilieus. Even the police are afraid to go there. Yes, lovely religion.

        2. Oky1,

“ I can’t be a Bigot when it come to Islam as their own words, beliefs & actions are proof I & most others should have a serious dislike/distrust for any followers of Islam.”

Who is saying you can’t be a bigot when it comes to Islam?

You can be as much of a bigot as you want. The consequences of doing so is being called out being a…bigot.

You can say whatever you want about Islam just as I can about Christianity or any other religion.

          1. I have an over 100 yr old dictionary behind that’s definition say’s I am not a Bigot when it comes to my views of the Evil Pedo Islamic Nut Jobs.

Svelaz, it’s easy, just say it, you Denounce Mohammad the Pedophile & his Satanic Islamic Gov’t/ IE: Quran & all other Pedophiles!

            Say It!

          2. Svelaz–Nice parallel stories about Christianity and Islam. Plutarch would have liked them.

When Jesus came upon a woman about to be stoned he talked the mob out of doing it.

When Mohammed came upon a woman about to be stoned, he picked up a rock and hurled it at the woman.

Those two instances, almost alone, define both belief systems.

      4. +1000. The hypocrisy of that poster stinks to “high heaven.” The original pioneers left Europe for NA primarily to flee the religious wars common throughout Europe at the time. They longed for land and land maps not defined by religion, something that is now rampant in the US, esp. by Western evangelicals whom toss around the oxymoronic term “Judeo-Christian.” .

When the first pioneers left Europe for NA, the Catholic Church wrongly practiced and still supports “Christiandom,” claiming geographic maps and the people therein for the Pope; all else are to be cast out or slaughtered, hence the enslavement of American indigenous persons.

P and X are the Latin letters for CH the first two letters of Christ’s name. Catholics still today use a P with elongated stem and at X crossing the bottom fo the stem (see the back of the priest’s robes among many other uses.) Constantine’s first use of this sign (after he converted) was to lead Roman troops into battle to KILL ROME’S ENEMIES. (SOUND FAMILAR? See crosses soldiers scratch onto US bombs in the ME.)

So-called Western “Evangelicals” lecturing about the evils of Islam is offensive in the extreme. Islam has not even scratched the surface of killing the world’s innocents compared to the US. If not for unlimited evangelical support it would be almost impossible for American POTUS’ to launch the many failed and mostly illegal military excursions, esp. in the ME.

      5. Judeo-Christian values discourage the idea of individualism. Religion requires devout obedience to a deity or another figure. Any deviation from doctrine is considered a sin or blasphemy. Both which are safeguards against individualism. If individualism was a judeo -Christian value there would be no incentive to follow the rules if you didn’t agree with them without consequences.

    3. You are correct that Islam is ‘fundamentally inconsistent’ with the constitution of the US. So it is troubling the Mr. Turley cannot see that this sharia compliant Muslim woman is doing her jihad part for Islam. There are many forms of jihad. Her part is softening up the population, normalizing the use of terms like jihad.

      1. Puraposta,

“ You are correct that Islam is ‘fundamentally inconsistent’ with the constitution of the US. ”

So is Christianity. The Bill of rights is inconsistent with the tenets of the Bible, even the Ten Commandments.

        1. That’s absurd. Thou shalt not kill. Kill the unbelievers. The contrast could not be more clear.

    4. The muslem has now reached a concentration of population they no longer feel the need to lie.

  5. Dear Prof. Turley, as a former student in your first year torts class, I implore you: Please denounce Critical Race Theory as Anti-American Marxist rot. If we are to turn this ship around, the change must come from academia. We are destroying everything that 200 years of American generations toiled to create. Please, please, speak up in your class against this dangerous Communist propaganda.

    1. It’s not communist propaganda.

I suspect that a lot of people who refer to CRT don’t actually know what it is.

      1. The majority haven’t read it at all. That’s the problem.

They just take it for granted what they are told.

  6. When a Muslim with a family background rooted in the Muslim Brotherhood, (The Omeish Family- MSA members, board member of Falls Church al-Hiraj terror mosque) the use of the word ‘jihad’ can mean only one thing. But the beauty of Islam is it’s dualism. She could always say, I just meant ‘struggle’ jihad not the ‘killing’ type. Sorry Jonathan, she knew exactly what she was doing.

  7. It’s the Dim wet dream: Bring in the third world and their attitudes and then let them push the natives out. They haven’t won the white male vote since the 60s and so they hate white males. We’d better wake up to wokeness and stop it dead in its tracks. This miscreant is just the first wave.

    1. I just met a US Marine at a bar and he said the US is so messed up he never wants to have kids and that is the 3rd marine to tell me that…that speaks volumes about the divide…and it’s NOT getting better!

      1. They should each have as many kids as they can while they still can. Just keep them of of public schools/govt control the best the can

The Deep State Globalist , & their insider govt puppets, have already been at war with the our citizen’s govt for decades. Many are now seeing this isn’t a conventional war against US Citizens.

  8. the opposite of individualism = collectivism

    see also:

    marxism-leninism

    anarcho-collectivism

    the takeaway:

    it never ends well

    ever

    ever ever ever

UNLESS youre a member of the political and ruling class

    then its GREAT

  9. Collectivism is, of course, a euphemism for socialism (and by extension communism).

Make no mistake socialism is the most beguiling, deceptive and ultimately oppressive socioeconomic system ever devised–the greater good, everyone has a right to guaranteed education, job and healthcare for life. An absolute triumph of first order thinking. What’s not to like? All you have to do is give away your rights, freedom and power to an apparently omniscient but certainly omnipotent government.

In actuality, what transpires is that what constitutes the “greater good” for all (see Orwell) is, in fact, completely determined by a small group of political elite (see wealth and power disparity) aka a totalitarian regime. That the “greater good” happens to align with what’s good and power sustaining for the ruling political elite is pure coincidence (see Brooklyn Bridge for sale).

What history shows us is that economically and societally, socialist and communist economies have a near 100% failure rate. The level of economic devastation that follows for all (excluding the ruling political elite naturally) can only be described as cataclysmic–hyperinflation, value destruction, resource dislocation and misallocation, chronic shortages of basic human staples, lack of innovation etc., all typically resulting in the de facto collapse of the country itself. In the 1980’s, ~35% of the world’s economies were under the yoke of socialism–that number today is in the low single digits and declining.

In Cuba, for example, the guaranteed job for life officially ended in 1995 as the government needed to make its economy more efficient. Apparently, the government figured out that the drudgery of soul-deadening jobs with no opportunity for advancement and de minimis pay (~$25/month) provides little incentive for anyone to do anything. The saying: “the government pretends to pay us and we pretend to work”. Interestingly, private ownership of property is now being allowed.

Postage-sized grocery stores with half-empty shelves, rationing and shortages of basic staples such as paper products, milk, eggs and butter are a fact of life. A healthcare system often bereft of doctors as many opt to work overseas and chronic shortages of even the most basic of medications such as paracetamol (fever reducing medication) are the accepted norm.

Let’s bear in mind that Cuba was once one of the most prosperous and thriving countries in the Western Hemisphere.

Lastly, there’s the not so trivial matter of human rights abuses and outright loss of human life (estimates are as high as 150 million people dead or murdered under the various regimes) as socialist and communist governments, like all totalitarian regimes, must ensure complete compliance and indoctrination with the “greater good” in order to survive.

In the Western world, the advent of socialism will be driven by the emergence of large scale existential problems that ostensibly only government can solve, the resulting growth of government as a percentage of GDP (at the expense of the private sector) and the positioning of government as not only part of the solution but the solution in and of itself. Government as the the end all, be all solution to all the world’s problems (or should that read a problem to all the world’s solutions?).

It is indeed a very beguiling and easy narrative until, in a microcosm, one thinks of all those solutions and experiences offered up by such venerable and time-honored government bureaucracies such as the USPS, Department of Motor Vehicles, the IRS and a legion of others.

In the end, socialism (wherein government is the overwhelmingly predominant social and economic societal force) is nothing more than a fanciful, narrative driven fiction….and an incredibly dystopian one at that. If you don’t think so, see Orwell, 1984.

Let’s hope it never becomes reality.

      1. I object to Social Security as an unfunded liability whilst proposing deficit spending of tens of trillions of dollars and I fundamentally disagree with Modern Monetary Theory.

I agree with Social Security as government can have a positive impact in providing a social safety net to those in need.

I’m not arguing that government has no role just that less can be more when it comes to government. In a nutshell, a threshold argument.

  10. Biden is about to meet Putin which is sadly funny.

But the frightening thing is that Putin, who is rational, has to wonder whom he is dealing with among the cloud of puppeteers struggling to make Biden’s jaws work right.

We are dangerously unpredictable and it is easy for other leaders to mistake weakness where there is hidden strength or count on strength where Biden has mistakenly been left in charge at a bad time.

The world is safer when America is predictable to friend and foe.

    We are no longer predictable.

Did the folks who helped steal the election not know this could happen?

  11. “Omeish is a strong speaker who impressively moved between English, Spanish, and Arabic in her address:: As if this mitigates the evil content of the speech. Hitler, Stalin, Castro were also strong speakers and their messages led to the deaths of millions. This is an evil woman who should be kept as far away as possible from any young impressionable mind.

  12. Since inception in Greece and perpetuation in Rome and Washington, D.C., “democracy” has been restricted-vote, republican self-governance.

Turnout in 1788 was 11.6% by design.

What this clown means is gimme-“free stuff,” one man-one vote, “democracy,” which is impossible, and always ends in dictatorship.

American governance is just like that of China, a restricted-vote republic, with the Constitution and Bill of Rights being the essential, critical difference.

Were the Constitution and Bill of Rights to be implemented, as they were pre-Lincoln, there would be little need for dependent parasites such as this to vote because the Constitution does not allow taxation for anything but “…general Welfare…” or regulation, and the right to private property prohibits a governmental take over of said private property.

The Constitution does not allow redistribution of wealth, central planning, control of means of production (i.e. regulation) or social engineering.

The entire American welfare state is unconstitutional.

Capitalism is a pejorative created by Karl Marx.

Under the Constitution, Americans engage in freedom and freedom of enterprise – freedom not an “ism.”

Free Americans, under the Constitution, engage in the “pursuit of happiness” and free enterprise.

This clown is a liar who simply endeavors to disparage and penalize success out of his personal envy and jealousy.

  13. ““The main misfortune, the root of all the evil to come, was the loss of confidence in the value of one’s own opinion. People imagined that it was out of date to follow their own moral sense, that they must all sing in chorus, and live by other people’s notions, notions that were being crammed down everybody’s throat.””

    An excellent quote.

  14. Professor Turley,
Has your wife considered running for the school board?

  15. It would have been nice to hear the students boo this lady during her “jihad” speech.

  16. As the admonition predicts, our proud, prosperous and productive country will be destroyed from within…that school board member should be barred from public education forever

  17. “The enemy is within the gates; it is with our own luxury, our own folly, our own criminality that we have to contend.”

Certificates, from “…the religious societies to which they belonged…,” that testified to their good character in Scotland and other immigrant nations of origin, were known to be of Christian origin, distinctly not Muslim, the historical “enemy” of the Crusades.

“Rufus King, a Massachusetts delegate to the Constitutional Convention, wrote in 1798 that emigrants from Scotland had typically brought with them certificates from “the religious societies to which they belonged” that testified to their good character. King proposed that something similar be required of all those wishing to settle here.”

    – Human Events

    1. It is not a surprise why so many Western men are searching to meet https://mailorderbridess.com/ foreign ladies for marriage. American men want to have a traditional wife at home. Someone who looks after the home and cooks lovely meals every day. Russian, Thai, or Mexican brides are the number one choice because they love to cook for their man. It is part of their culture. Singles from other parts of the world are more traditional brides who respect the man and treat their husbands as to the household leader.

    2. The corporations have eaten our democracy alive. They has bankrolled the right wing and the Republican Party for decades. They have reworked and deforrmed our laws and made it almost impossible for individuals to enforce their rights by making redress in the courts almost unattainable for any but the obscenely rich. They have stoked the fires of class and races division by blaming immigrants, women, the poor and others for the problems that they themselves are causing.

Frankly I think Omeish missed the boat. The enemy is uncontrolled and unregulated capitalism. Even Adam Smith Shaw the danger of unregulated capitalism and he is unlikely to have envisioned the stranglehold that nontaxpaying mega corporations have on our society and our governments.

      2. It ain’t just Republicans, Holmes. Who’s in charge of the tech giants, for instance? Democrats. I’d wager most are really just statists aiming to increase corporatist power no matter which party is at the helm. Better to keep the little people throwing spitballs at each other than paying attention to what’s really at stake.
