“Minor-Attracted People”: Old Dominion University Professor Faces Calls For Termination Over his Views of Pedophilia

An assistant professor at Old Dominion University is facing calls for his firing after an interview where he discussed his highly controversial views of pedophilia.  Allyn Walker, who teaches sociology and criminal justice at Old Dominion University, believes that it is not immoral for adults to be sexually attracted to children. He insists that “minor-attracted persons” are wrongly stigmatized for “an attraction they didn’t ask for.” As will come to no surprise to readers on this blog, I believe that Walker’s views are protected by free speech as well as academic freedom principles.[Update: Walker is now on leave from the university].

The controversy was triggered after Walker gave a Nov. 8 interview with the Prostasia Foundation, a San Francisco-based child protection organization, on Walker’s book, “A Long Dark Shadow: Minor-Attracted People and Their Pursuit of Dignity.” Walker explained the use of “minor-attracted persons” or MAPs rather than “pedophile:”

“A lot of people when they hear the term ‘pedophile,’ they automatically assume that it means a sex offender, and that isn’t true. And it leads to a lot of misconceptions about attractions towards minors…From my perspective, there is no morality or immorality attached to attraction to anyone because no one can control who they’re attracted to at all…In other words, it’s not who we’re attracted to that’s either OK or not OK. It’s our behaviors in responding to that attraction that are either OK or not OK…We have a tendency to want to categorize people with these attractions as evil or morally corrupt. But when we’re talking about non-offending MAPs, these are people who have an attraction they didn’t ask for. … So, their behaviors are moral. But they’re still being subjected to this same idea that they’re bad people and they’ve often internalized that for themselves.”

The interview caused a firestorm of controversy and Walker issued a statement that “I want to be clear: child sexual abuse is an inexcusable crime. As an assistant professor of sociology and criminal justice, the goal of my research is to prevent crime.”

The backlash was so great that ODU officials felt it was necessary to declare that it was not in favor of pedophilia:

“Following recent social media activity and direct outreach to the institution, it is important to share that Old Dominion, as a caring and inclusive community, does not endorse or promote crimes against children or any form of criminal activity.”

I would have preferred a statement simply reaffirming that the school honors academic freedom and free speech. It does not have to agree with the views of faculty members to support the right to express those views. Indeed, as a public university, it is bound by the protections of the First Amendment.

Nevertheless, a Change.org petition signed by more than 1,600 people as of Monday called on ODU to oust Walker over concerns that such teaching “in the sociology and criminal justice department … will effect the next generation in a negative way.”

Walker could successfully challenge any such termination. It is certainly understandable why people are upset about these views. Even the thought of being sexually attracted to children is deeply upsetting for most of us. That view is being heard loudly across the media platforms this week. However, that is the value of free speech. Each of us can use our own free speech rights to confront and to condemn such views. Universities are places for intellectual exploration. We often challenge orthodoxy and each other. Some views may be offensive or obnoxious. However, the diversity of thought is the very essence of our education mission.

Professor Walker has caused a raging debate. Have at it. Denounce him. Better yet, debate him. But do not try to fire him.

  1. If someone had the overwhelming urge to cannibalize a lover, admitted this to their girlfriend, would it be smart of her to keep dating him? He should be commended for fighting his urges, but very likely should not be out on the street, but rather in a residential care facility as long as those urges persisted, or were likely to return.

This is because the horror of what would happen should he give in would be too great.

Likewise, if someone felt an overwhelming urge to murder his wife, resisting the impulse so far isn’t the end of it. While his wife’s family would certainly feel grateful that he’d resisted the impulse to kill her…so far, they would immediately want to remove her from his reach, and put him in treatment.

I actually do think it is honorable if a pedophile turns himself in to get treatment BEFORE he or she harms a child. This proclivity should qualify one for permanent residential care. Simply resisting the impulse to irreparably harm a child isn’t enough. One would assume most child rapists resisted their impulses for at least some time. They need to go further, and report for mental health treatment and possibly commitment.

It’s wrong to try to normalize pedophilia with euphemisms such as minior-attracted. NAMBLA, if I’ve got the acronym right, has put considerable effort into trying to normalize pedophilia, hoping that one day we will revert to ancient times, when such abuse was culturally accepted, and the victims had no rights.

    We cannot let that happen.

The professor not only commends the pedophile from resisting the urge to sexually assault children, but he goes further with promoting euphemisms like minor-attracted to replace pedophile. It’s the logical conclusion from continually pushing the envelope. Gender is no longer biological, but some undefinable internal feeling that can change at any moment. There are pan sexual, gender fluid, non binary…the pedophilia movement will try to ride on the coattails of pushing the envelope on what’s culturally acceptable.

This professor’s statements once again illustrates that when an employee makes offensive remarks in the capacity of his work, it taints his employer. Many parents will now be wondering why this university would hire, and tenure, a professor espousing pedophilia as a moral attraction.

The reality is that people may have traits or impulses that are immoral and detrimental to others. A psychopath, sociopath, and narcissist all have traits that they didn’t ask for, but that are injurious to others. One can have sympathy for them, while simultaneously not want to be anywhere near them for reasons of personal physical and emotional safety.

I agree. I have sympathy for Trump’s traumatic upbringing while simultaneously not wanting to be anywhere near him or listen to his pathological lying for reasons of personal physical and emotional safety.

      Well said, Karen!

  2. The strange behavior of Michael Jackson. Was Michael a Pedophile, a Democrat or Republican?

There are photos of Michael with Donald Trump, Ronald Regan, Bill Clinton & Barrack Obama.

Here is Howard Stern’s rendering of Michael Jackson on New Years Rotten Eve

  3. Cancel culture strikes again! It seems the SJWs and QAnons have something in common. Is it really outrageous to say someone has a condition? It is like being mad at someone for saying having depression is a condition. Americans simply don’t want to understand anything and are reactionary in nature. I wonder how they’d react if suddenly whatever social froup they are in were declared anathema by the rest of society. This is another reason the sex offense registry needs to be abolished– we are simply promoting Predator Panic.

Professor Walker is one of those faceless academics who, having mean talent, attempts to substitute outrageousness for public attention. He failed. How’s about we frustrate him and his preposterous argument by simply ignoring this scum on your shoe of a man?

    1. Mespo says:

“How’s about we frustrate him and his preposterous argument by simply ignoring this scum on your shoe of a man?”

Exactly stated! We are perfectly free to ignore, shame, shun and ostracize those whose speech we find reprehensible. That’s what I have been saying all along- Never Trumpers are perfectly free to ignore, shame, shun and ostracize lying Trumpists.

  5. Just a few facts here amongst the outraged there are teens who have been diagnosed with pedophilia. There is a difference between the medical diagnosis and the designation of pedophile which is thrown around on television series programs which like to media fear-mongering is unsubstantiated and irresponsible. If you watch the documentary ‘Untouchable’ by David Feige one of his subjects is a guy who with the help of qualified therapists has learned to manage and control it.

We as a nation have been sufficiently groomed by some law enforcement, television and print media continue to use terms more as opinion than investigative journalism. We are a nation that has become proficient at ‘othering’ and dismissive to escalate our own self assessment.

Pedophilia is not a medical diagnosis. There is no medical diagnostic test, no lab test, no radiology, no histological tissue test, nada. It’s psychological. To submit a minor to such selfish depravity deserves the most severe and harshest rebuke and punishments therein.

We are a nation that has become proficient at ‘othering’ and dismissive to escalate our own self assessment.

Your dismissiveness of pedophilia is noted.

“ Pedophilia and DSM-5: The Importance of Clearly Defining the Nature of a Pedophilic Disorder”

“ Many in society are likely to equate Pedophilia with child molestation. They are not the same. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5)1 may be contributing inadvertently to the misconception that they are the same, for the following three reasons:

First, DSM-5 states that an indicator of a Pedophilic Disorder would be that an individual has “acted on” his sexual urges (Ref. 1, p 697). “Acted on” could mean that he has actually molested a child. On the other hand, it could also mean that he has masturbated to pedophilic fantasies or that he has viewed child pornography. The current criteria for diagnosing a Pedophilic Disorder place some persons who have never molested a child into the same diagnostic category as those who have done so. That could cause confusion, suggesting that the current definition of a Pedophilic Disorder may lack adequate diagnostic specificity. As a consequence, the distinction between being sexually attracted to children in some fashion (e.g., experiencing urges to view child pornography) and experiencing urges to act on that attraction with a child can easily be lost.”

Asking questions such as, did any family members have breast cancer, to determine the likelihood of breast cancer occurring in an individual is not a diagnostic test.

Now, I will wait for your response with two diagnostic tests that led you to criticize Estovir’s statement. Of course, I expect you to run away as usual.

  6. Let him have his free speech. At least now we know not to let him watch the kids or teach primary school children. It’s the pedophiles that hide in the shadows that are the greater threat.

  7. What he said was pretty much standard sociology, and he was not advocating pedophilia. The people who started the firestorm — let me guess, “woke” students and a few faculty — should have listened more carefully to his actual words. He’s simply claiming that the attraction is biological-neurological, and should not stigmatize the individual if that individual doesn’t act on it. It’s the act that constitutes the offense, not the thought or the feeling. These knee-jerk, factless reactions from the woke mob are destroying our freedoms. Teaching CRT and Howard Zinn’s version of hate has done more to destroy knowledge and society than anything this prof has said. As an assistant professor, he probably does not have tenure, so this exaggerated ignorant reaction may have ended his career.

    1. Sorry for the double entry — was having trouble signing on and didn’t realize it had already posted.

  9. The crime is in the conduct for sure….and I am sure we do not condone premeditated murder….or tolerate folks that tell us in advance they have that predilection.

Is that not what Red Flag Laws are all about when it comes to guns….so why not Child Molesters?

Show the signs of being a danger to others and the Left shall happily apply Red Flag Laws to you…..but when it comes to Child Molesters….suddenly they are quite willing to ignore risks to Children.

Same as in their protection of Killers…but not the unborn.

I suppose it is anyone’s right to be a latent Child Molester in the Left’s eyes.

  10. I’m surprised. I’m thinking that this would be just another personality variety to the woke radical left, who seem to support every other unusual variety.

  11. In my youth, lo these many years ago, attraction to the same sex was considered a disease. Those who couldn’t help it had the choice to do something illegal or not. Society has changed and homosexual attraction is considered normal — has become “normalized.”
There are people attracted to children. Those people have the choice to do something illegal or not.
These two situations are not the same. Acting on an attraction may not be moral. As Ellen Evans says, being hopelessly attracted to someone not your spouse is normal, but acting on it may be immoral.
Moral minor-attracted-persons exist who understand that acting on those attractions is immoral because it may be harmful to children.

To merely acknowledge that such people exist — m-a-p who do not act on that attraction — does not “normalize” harmful behavior. There is a difference between the thought (not a crime) and action (a crime).

  12. Turley says:

“ Professor Walker has caused a raging debate. Have at it. Denounce him. Better yet, debate him. But do not try to fire him.”

Good for you Turley. Finally, you are stridently advocating denouncing a speaker. I agree he ought not to be fired; just his speech condemned, shunned and ignored.

Debate? Always? Do we need to debate Creationists still?

BUT what about John Eastman? EASTMAN, Turley. He was forced out of his law school for his views. Why have you not come to his defense? Why the utter silence?

Could it be because you don’t want to go on the record to criticize the merits of the legal memo he wrote to Pence? And in so doing, you would be acknowledging that the ELECTION WAS NOT STOLEN and Pence was right in ignoring Eastman’s analysis? In which case, you implicitly would be conceding that YOUR network SPREAD Trump’s Big Lie that it was stolen by massive fraud?

    1. Jeff

You really ought to get help for your TDS.

More than a year since Trump lost the election and he still lives in your head.

Friendly thought: if we are tired of your obsessing, imagine how your family must feel hearing this every day.

      One trick pony.

      1. Monument,

When you lying Trumpists get help for your Leftist Derangement Syndrome (LDS), I’ll seek help for my TDS. You lead by example, mkay?

  13. How many people have signed the petition without reading the interview? Walker takes the position that you cannot blame someone for having feelings of attraction to a minor (because you were born with it, I guess, is what he means) but you can blame (and prosecute) them if they give in to that feeling and abuse a minor. I tend to agree.

      1. No, because homosexuality often involves two consenting individuals instead of one person just being attracted to the notion of being with someone else especially children.

An older man can be attracted by a younger woman, say a 60 year old being attracted to a 20 year old or vice versa. The age difference isn’t really a very controversial issue in that scenario, but if the age goes below a certain point it is certainly highly controversial or taboo. Let’s keep in mind that it was common in the past for older adults to marry girls as young as 15.

        1. “homosexuality often involves two consenting individuals”

So as long as the 10 year old consents, then it is ok? Have you read “Brave New World”? With religion being replaced by govt. and the moral decay that has happened since, It’s hard to see a future where pedophiles don’t become a protected perversion.

          1. In 1880 the age of consent in THIS country was 10 to 12. That didn’t change until 1920 when it was raised in most states to 16. That was with heterosexuals.

The point being missed here is the professor was NOT advocating or condoning sexual abuse of minors. He was talking about an important distinction that is being lost on the ignorant who only see one meaning of the term pedophilia.

            1. The point being missed here is the professor was NOT advocating or condoning sexual abuse of minors.

Right. 🙄 And CRT isn’t being taught in K-12 schools. The jig is up.

            2. Svelaz is anxious to return to the 1880’s so he could legally get his 10 year old supply. This man is looking for things that accept aberrant behavior so he is freer to act out his fantasies. Just listen to all of his shallow arguments that he later runs away from

  14. I am sorry but even in the absence of a Supreme Being society has the right to determine what behaviors are contributing to a peaceful, orderly, and stable society and what behaviors should be prohibited. Some behaviors have a long evidential history of contributing to the deterioration of a society – in this particular case see Greece and Rome.

The problem is the normalization of deviation and that practice primarily occurs from a teaching and encouragement standpoint in the university. Hiding behind tenure and free speech (for me but not for thee), university professors represent one of the most destructive forces of an orderly and peaceful society in their push to destroy societal norms that have withstood the rest of time.

While I have typically supported Turley’s call for the protection of radical ideas, Turley has gone over the hill into the land of arguing there should be no societal repercussions for those ideas. Its like arguing that a Professor advocating that all progressives be forcefully sterilized should receive no condemnation or consequences for their statements in terms of holding a position of influence over gullible children.

If we are going to literally protect the advocacy of pedophilia then we actually not only protect the pedophiles we are actually rewarding them. Well then, lets just erase that prohibition from our federal and state codes.

    Next to be normalized: Rape,
    robbery, and murder

    1. You are so square man, there are no “rapists” only “forced sex-attracted persons” or FSAPs rather than “rapist:

    2. Wilson says:

      “Next to be normalized: Rape,
      robbery, and murder.”

You left out “lying” thanks to Trump and those those who remain silent or are indifferent to his cascade of lies.

  15. Admire Walker’s courage.

    His judgment, not so much.

He is guilty of no crime (that we know of), so he should keep his job.

But recognize this interview for what it is – the camel’s nose trying to get into the tent.

Wish that the left was as tolerant of the 1st and 2nd amendments.

    1. “the camel’s nose trying to get into the tent.”

Correct. this will be pushed more and more as time goes by. Add another letter to the alphabet soup the liberals keep pushing.

    2. But recognize this interview for what it is – the camel’s nose trying to get into the tent.

Exactly. This will follow a regular process in our culture war. Inject the taboo topic into the public domain; use free speech arguments to enhance the visibility of the topic; normalize the topic; then start defending criminal cases where the minors “gave consent.” With one win involving a 17 year old, move on to 16, 15…and so on.

      1. Olly,

You forgot to add Hollywood and media normalization. Movies will start to trickle it in as well as advertising commercials. Funny how the progressives have told us over the decades there is now reason to have fear of the slippery slope.

      2. Olly warns:

“This will follow a regular process in our culture war. Inject the taboo topic into the public domain; use free speech arguments to enhance the visibility of the topic; normalize the topic; then start defending criminal cases where the minors “gave consent.”

Blame Turley the Free Speech Originalist and defense attorney?

  16. Yes, freedom of speech should be free for everyone. The problem is today it’s only free for the left. Each time a conservative professor freely speaks he’s attacked and terminated. When you listen to this (whatever he designates himself) you understand why college and universities are turning out morons. All these wack jobs are attempting “normalize” their perversion. Would anyone here leave their child or grandchild alone in a room with this “MAP”?

    1. Ms. Ballhere says:

“Would anyone here leave their child or grandchild alone in a room with this “MAP”?”

I wouldn’t leave my child in a room with a lying Trumpist. That much I do know.

      1. Jeff here seems to be saying that he would rather leave his kid with a MAP than with a conservative republican! Now please explain to me how we can have a unified nation when liberals claim that they would rather leave their own children, or any children, with men sexually attracted to them than to someone who favors a smaller government.

Years ago it was said that conservatives think liberals are wrong while liberals think conservatives are evil and this is because leftism is a religion, not a political outlook.

        1. HullBobby,

Liz Cheney is a Conservative Republican; I said a “lying Trumpist.” This country is being divided by Trumpists not MAP’s.

          1. Jeff, you are an idiot. “lying Trumpist.”, a meaningless statement dominates your entire existence on this blog and now you are telling the world that you would rather leave your child with a MAP than about half the nation of voters.

That attitude can only come from a nutcase and one who has the potential of being guilty of child abuse. You are acting out your fantasies a weird manner, so weird that I wouldn’t leave a child in your care because God only knows what would happen should suddenly your TDS were activated.

Has Jeff not convinced even the most strident liberal that he has nothing to offer of value? I guess not when one considers how nutty some of the left has become. Rioting, burning buildings, looting and other heinous actions are done and supported with people like Jeff all in the name of TDS.

        2. North Korea has its dear leader. Republicans have Trump. Both involve a level of loyalty that cults strive for.

      2. Margot, nowhere in the column is an indication to be found that Walker is a pedophile himself.
Jeff, you have to bring Trump up in this context? You need help!

        1. Dutch,

Counseling is expensive. Would you Trumpists give money to a Go Fund Me so I can get the desperately needed treatment? Put your money where your mouth is?

        2. DD-No where in the article indicates he/she is not. Based on the video I’ll make my own conclusion on what she/he is/is not.
PS: Articles indicate he is a she who thinks she’s a he. Ignore Jeffy he’s just a troll who gets his jollies stirring the pot.

          1. What does Turley suggest for an unpopular speaker, Margot Sweetheart?

            “Better yet, debate him.”

      3. Your poor kids. You would rather they be with a pervert than the best President we had in my lifetime?? Maybe you should hand your kid to Delusional Joe, since he is so good with kids.!!!!/SNARK

      4. Jeff, since you implied that you would have no issue with leaving children with an admitted pedophile maybe the authorities should look into your kids or grandkids.

Also, would the left (or anyone) give a gun permit to someone saying they have murder fantasies? No, they would be red flagged. So why no red flag for someone stating they have sexual feelings for children?

        1. Listen to this old video on teachers.

BREAKING: NJ Teachers Union President Will “Bend the Truth,” Cover Up Child Abuse in Schools

        2. HullBobby asks:

“So why no red flag for someone stating they have sexual feelings for children?”

Why no red flag for Trump for lying to millions of his followers that his election was stolen so that some in his horde wanted to hang Mike Pence?

    2. Margot Ballhere,

Too many people here are doing exactly what the professor in the interview was pointing out. The term MAP is not a reference to people being sexually attracted to children. His point is that there are people who find children attractive. The thought itself is what he’s referring to , not acting on the thought. It’s not about “normalizing” people who are SEXUALLY attracted to children. The professor was making a distinction, however his point is being drowned out by hysterical conservatives losing their minds because they are not really paying attention to what he is saying. All THEY see is a professor who is trying to justify sexual attraction to children. They are not really thinking. They are just reacting to the misconstrued idea THEY are perceiving to be since the word pedophilia is commonly associated with sexual abuse of children. He’s trying to make a distinction. That’s all.

Keep in mind that the age of consent in this country is 16 at its lowest. In the 1950’s time the age of consent in the state of Georgia was 14.

The formal position of the Catholic Church is that homosexual attraction (the thought) is not immoral, but practicing it is. The priests get to confess and clear the slate as if it never happened. This theology is immoral on its face. Anything may be forgiven, from murder to rape to torture.

    1. Through statistics we know the percentages of pedophilia are much higher in the General Population than in the clergy. And also—pedophilia is not only found to be a problem for Catholic clergy, some other people involved in religious teaching have been found to be afflicted. To the people who are afraid of the “Slippery Slope” analogy: When University study, through published, peer-reviewed articles and journals, is able to change our Nation’s Sexual Education Curriculum to teach Anal Sex is a form of Birth Control—then, and only then will the liberal indoctrination be complete.
