Washington’s Pandora’s Box: The Opening of the Hunter Biden Laptop Could Expose the Cottage Industry of Influence Peddling

Below is my column in Fox.com on the impact of the likely GOP takeover of the House on the Hunter Biden scandal. Hunter Biden’s laptop is Washington’s Pandora’s Box. Opening up that laptop to greater public scrutiny could expose our local cottage industry of influence peddling.

Here is the column:

In the legend of Pandora’s box, the star-crossed Pandora releases a slew of evils upon the world. Notably, the only thing that she was able to trap in the box or jar was something that is likely to be at a premium in Washington this week: hope.

The likely Republican takeover of the House could yield a slew of investigations in the months to come. Washington is famous for managing scandals. Indeed, it is a virtual artform in the Beltway. However, there is one investigation that comes the closest to Pandora’s box for the Washington establishment. A serious investigation into the Hunter Biden scandal could put the political and media elite into an existential crisis.

Here are the “usual suspects” who could find themselves under a microscope for the first time as a result of a full investigation into Hunter Biden.

The Bidens

The Biden family has long been associated with influence peddling to the degree that they could add an access key to their family crest. While they may be more aggressive than most families, influence peddling has long been a cottage industry in Washington. For decades, I have written about this loophole in bribery laws. It is illegal to give a member of Congress or a president even $100 to gain influence. However, you can literally give millions to their spouses or children in the forms of windfall contracts or cozy jobs.

James Biden has been remarkably (even refreshingly) open about marketing his access to his brother. Former Americore executive Tom Pritchard and others allege the Biden openly referenced his access to his brother and his family name in his pitch for clients. James has faced a wide array of litigation over allegedly fraudulent activities as well as a personal loan acquired through Americore before it went into bankruptcy.

Hunter worked with his uncle but also branched off on his own in the family business. While his father recently emphasized that his son was a hopeless addict, that defense stands in glaring contradiction to the fact that he maintained a multimillion-dollar influence-peddling scheme. The question is why foreign figures (including some associated with foreign intelligence) rushed to him international money transfers and complex deals worth millions from Moscow to Kyiv to Beijing.

However, the Biden most concerned may be the president himself. Joe Biden has repeatedly denied knowledge of Hunter Biden’s business entanglements despite numerous emails and pictures showing him meeting with Hunter associates. That includes at least 19 visits to the White House by Hunter’s partner, Eric Schwerin, alone between 2009 and 2015.

While emails on Hunter Biden’s laptop make repeated reference to his father as a possible recipient of funds derived from influence peddling. Indeed, in one email, Tony Bobulinski, then a business partner of Hunter, was instructed by Biden associate James Gilliar that the Bidens wanted to avoid such references: “Don’t mention Joe being involved, it’s only when u [sic] are face to face, I know u [sic] know that but they are paranoid.”

In discussing these deals, Joe Biden is referenced with code names such as “Celtic” or “the big guy.” In one, “the big guy” is discussed as possibly receiving a 10% cut on a deal with a Chinese energy firm. There are also references to Hunter paying off the bills of his father from shared accounts. From his board memberships to venture deals to legal fees to his art deals, Hunter Biden is a tour de force of alleged corrupt practices used in Washington. Indeed, while his skills as a painter and a lawyer have been questioned, Hunter’s remarkable skills at influence peddling could soon be the focus of Washington.

The Beltway Bandits

One of the things that most worries the establishment is that these emails threaten to pull the curtain away from the influence-peddling cottage industry. The emails contain an array of children connected to powerful Democratic and Republican leaders. For example, one of Hunter’s closest associates was John Kerry’s stepson, Chris Heinz. Like Joe Biden, Kerry is also accused of falsely denying knowledge of his son’s business dealings. Even the late mobster James “Whitey” Bulger’s nephew, Jim Bulger, was a business associate of Hunter Biden. The Bulgers were a powerful Democratic family in Massachusetts.

Surrounding these well-connected children are an array of insiders tied to the very top of the Democratic and Republican parties. An array of lawyers and political operatives quickly formed around the kinder of the powerful to cash in on these foreign dealings. An investigation of Hunter Biden could not spotlight his conduct without putting a floodlight on all of those who support the influence-peddling industry.

The Media

The media is the final group that could be collateral damage in any investigation. This influence peddling could not have occurred without the assurance that the media had the back of the Bidens. Imagine what the media would have done with even one of these deals with foreign political or influence figures if a Trump child was the recipient. The genius of the Biden influence peddling operation was to make the media an early and active participant. The media and social media companies almost universally buried the Hunter Biden scandal before the 2020 election. They became invested in the denial over two years of belittling or dismissing the story.

The disclosure of the corrupt practices linked to the Bidens will erode what little trust remains for the media. Figures like Bobulinski and the underlying emails were available to the media before the 2020 election. However, the media showed strikingly little interest in pursuing the facts of the influence peddling. Bobulinski and others will now presumably have a chance to be heard.

Obviously, other groups are also worried about what sunshine will expose in this scandal. That includes the FBI which appears to have scuttled or slowed early efforts to investigate the Biden dealings. It also includes Attorney General Merrick Garland, who steadfastly refused to appoint a special counsel despite overwhelming support for such an appointment.

There is of course a difference between opening Hunter’s laptop as opposed to Pandora’s Box: few in the Beltway expected to find hope within its sorted contents.

  1. Oh they wanted so hard to believe that Trump was a Russian stooge. Oh they wanted so hard for Trump and his businesses to be investigated. Now that there’s a good chance that the Biden’s will be investigated a cacophony erupts amongst our bloggers on the left. All politicians including Trump should have their feet held to the fire for misdeeds. Those who wanted investigations of Trump but now don’t want investigations of Joe and Hunter lay their heads down on the pillow at night and say to themselves “I am a fair minded person.” Fair minded delusion prevails but fairness has nothing to do with it.

  2. My question is this; does the Hunter Biden laptop reveal an actual crime or strong circumstantial evidence of an actual crime? If it does not, then an investigation into the Hunter Biden laptop and the associated information it contained is just another in a long line of Washington DC political witch hunts.

I’m sick and tired of all the political witch hunts in Washington DC.

    1. Steve Witherspoon, there were those who said that Trump was colluding with the Russians without evidence of any kind. Now there is ample evidence coming directly from the mouth of Hunter, his uncle and a business partner that reveal their millions of dollars relationship with Ukraine and China and you want to just sweep it under the rug. A witch hunt occurs when their is no evidence to support the claims but a worthwhile investigation occurs when the evidence available supports such action. I say, buckle up buttercup. The world is what it is.

      1. “A witch hunt occurs when their is no evidence to support the claims but a worthwhile investigation occurs when the evidence available supports such action.”

Proof that cognitive dissonance is alive and well on this blog.

Hearsay is not evidence and making millions on deals with foreign companies is not illegal nor a crime. The reason for a witch-hunt is to search for a crime absent any evidence. At least Witherspoon acknowledges the frivolity of pursuing this dead horse of a “scandal” about Hunter Biden and his deals.

        1. Svelaz wrote, “At least Witherspoon acknowledges the frivolity of pursuing this dead horse of a “scandal” about Hunter Biden and his deals.”

Whether it’s intentional or not, you’re misrepresenting what I wrote.

I’m only acknowledging the frivolity of pursuing this if, and I do mean IF, the Hunter Biden laptop does not reveal an actual crime or strong circumstantial evidence of an actual crime. No one has provided substantial evidence to support either side of this laptop scandal argument to me yet and I’ll not jump on a witch hunt bandwagon like so many partisan hacks do based on pure partisan innuendo.

          1. Steve Witherspoon. I appreciate your attempt at fairness but the laptop is a real physical thing. It has a hard case and a keyboard. In a court of law the laptop would be considered hard evidence. Tap tap tap yep there it is hard plastic. Open file open file open file yep there it is Hunter worked with Ukraine yep there it is. Open file open file open file Hunter worked with China yep there it is. Hunter used the money he got to pay daddy Joe’s bills yep there it is. Maybe until now you just didn’t know that yep there it is. No witches jumped out of the laptop yep there it is.

            1. Thinkitthrough wrote, “I appreciate your attempt at fairness but the laptop is a real physical thing. It has a hard case and a keyboard. In a court of law the laptop would be considered hard evidence. Tap tap tap yep there it is hard plastic.”

Using that kind of logic then my personal laptop is a real physical thing and could be used as hard evidence proving that Hunter Biden engaged in criminal acts. Your logic fails on this aspect. No Thinkitthrough, the fact that the laptop physically exists is not the hard evidence that proves illegal activity, it’s what’s contained on that laptop that’s would be the hard/digital evidence.

Thinkitthrough wrote, “Open file open file open file yep there it is Hunter worked with Ukraine yep there it is. Open file open file open file Hunter worked with China yep there it is. Hunter used the money he got to pay daddy Joe’s bills yep there it is.”

You’re implying that all those things are criminal acts; what criminal act, state it, what is the statute that was violated? Is it a possible sign of unethical behaviors, from what I’ve heard and read so far I’m absolutely sure that’s true, but is it a sign of actual criminal activity, I’m not convinced of that yet.

Consider this statement of fact; all criminal acts are certainly unethical but not all unethical acts are criminal.

Thinkitthrough wrote, “Maybe until now you just didn’t know that yep there it is. No witches jumped out of the laptop yep there it is.”

You’re welcome to your opinion on this, but I stand by everything I wrote and your comment hasn’t convinced me otherwise.

              1. Steve Witherspoon, your laptop is not Hunters laptop and your laptop does not have the evidence on it that Hunters contains. Saying that your laptop could be used to associate Hunter with foreign entities is ridiculous on its face. In grammar school they played a little game. “One of these things is not like the other.” Your right, no crime shown so far but let’s follow the bread crumbs. Hunter gets money from China and Hunter says he pays Joe’s bills with the money he has earned. Hunter Biden typed these words on a real laptop that does exist. If you would be so inclined you would recall that when the press said the laptop wasn’t Hunters, Hunter himself would not deny that it was his laptop. He said it could be his on national television. I repeat, if you were so inclined.

                1. Thinkitthrough wrote, “Steve Witherspoon, your laptop is not Hunters laptop and your laptop does not have the evidence on it that Hunters contains. Saying that your laptop could be used to associate Hunter with foreign entities is ridiculous on its face. In grammar school they played a little game. “One of these things is not like the other.””

It’s very evident that the logic blew completely over your head. I’m not explaining myself on that point anymore, think whatever you like.

Thinkitthrough wrote, “Your right, no crime shown so far but let’s follow the bread crumbs.”

I bet you don’t realize it, but that’s the exact same kind of nonsensical justification that the Democrats have used over and over again when they’re trying to “get” Trump. It’s BS.

Thinkitthrough wrote, “Hunter gets money from China and Hunter says he pays Joe’s bills with the money he has earned. Hunter Biden typed these words on a real laptop that does exist. “

                  Where is the perceived crime?

Thinkitthrough wrote, “If you would be so inclined you would recall that when the press said the laptop wasn’t Hunters, Hunter himself would not deny that it was his laptop. He said it could be his on national television. I repeat, if you were so inclined.”

Yes I recall that, what’s your point?

Is your point that the media was trying to cover for Hunter Biden thus protecting Candidate Joe Biden from a possible scandal just before the election, well hell yes, that’s exactly what happened. The hackified Pravda like media was in total lock step with the Democratic Party and chose to do anything to protect their chosen candidate. The left dominated mass media has turned into full blown partisan activists and they justify it with one unethical rationalization after another. Their now propaganda outlets for the Democratic Party and Propaganda Is Destroying Trust In The Fourth Estate and Wreaking Havoc On Society.

            2. Thinkitthrough wrote, “your attempt at fairness”

Nope, it wasn’t an “attempt” at anything, it’s me being who I am and that included me not being a hypocrite regarding the basis for political witch hunts. I abhor hypocrisy.

You really need to “Thinkitthrough” a bit more. 😉

          2. Witherspoon, I’m only pointing out the fact that you indeed have a healthy measure of skepticism on the issue of the Hunter Biden “scandal”. That is not an attempt at mockery or insult.

            1. Svelaz wrote, “I’m only pointing out the fact that you indeed have a healthy measure of skepticism on the issue of the Hunter Biden “scandal”. That is not an attempt at mockery or insult. [bold emphasis mine]

There you go again, you’re misrepresenting what I wrote again and this time it’s lame attempt at an intentional false smear! Just stop it Svelaz.

I did not say or imply that you attempted at mockery or an insult, I unambiguously stated that you misrepresented what I wrote, period! If you don’t know the difference in the words, then I suggest you visit the English Department at any college in your area and ask one of the professors.

              1. Witherspoon, I was referring to MY posting that it was NOT mockery or insult. Not your observation!

Pay attention man. I was agreeing with you.

        2. Svelaz, making millions from a foreign nation is not a crime when a person has the expertise to justify the work being done. Hunter had no qualifications for the job. Now you tell us that the evidence found on Hunter’s laptop is only hearsay. We have no evidence that Trump colluded with foreign nations but we have it in writing that Hunter and Joe did so. Have you conveniently forgotten that Joe said he never was involved with his sons business dealings when Hunters business partners met with Joe in the Whitehouse nineteen times. There are photographs of their meetings that you just don’t want to see. No matter how hard you want to block out these facts it just ain’t gonna happen. Some things should be embarrassing.

          1. Thinkitthrough wrote, “making millions from a foreign nation is not a crime when a person has the expertise to justify the work being done. Hunter had no qualifications for the job.”

It’s also not a crime when the one hired is a blithering drunken/stoned imbecile that can’t keep is wanker in his pants and has no qualifications.

Thinkitthrough wrote, “Have you conveniently forgotten that Joe said he never was involved with his sons business dealings when Hunters business partners met with Joe in the Whitehouse nineteen times. There are photographs of their meetings that you just don’t want to see. “

            State the crime?

          2. “ Svelaz, making millions from a foreign nation is not a crime when a person has the expertise to justify the work being done. Hunter had no qualifications for the job.”

It’s not a crime if a person has no expertise or qualifications. Jared Kushner became a Middle East advisor to Trump and he had zero experience.

Your biggest obstacle is an inability to articulate exactly what crime it is you’re implying Hunter Biden is guilty of. Nobody has been able to articulate it, Even Turley.

            1. “Kushner became a Middle East advisor to Trump and he had zero experience.”

              Wrong!

        1. A follow-up…in another thread you stated I falsely assumed you were a Marine. As I cannot reply there, I offer here. I apologize for falsely assuming you to be a Marine. No reply necessary, I’m merely bringing my Taegeuk back into balance.

          1. safeside824 wrote, “A follow-up…in another thread you stated I falsely assumed you were a Marine. As I cannot reply there, I offer here. I apologize for falsely assuming you to be a Marine. No reply necessary, I’m merely bringing my Taegeuk back into balance.”

Apology accepted but it really wasn’t necessary. I’ve got rather think skin too after spending years as an 11B in the Army. I really didn’t take any offense to the assumption, others have done the same thing in the past and I generally just blow it off but you had alluded to it numerous times by then and I didn’t want others to start making the same assumption. It’s all good.

I had a Tae instructor a long time ago that was trained by a master in South Korea and he used to say that something to the effect of sometimes you’ll have to drag your Taegeuk out on the mat and pound it back into balance.

  3. Turley could care less when Trump and family were taking in millions from taxpayers and politicians, but now, Turley thinks maybe they should start looking now at corruption.

  4. As much as I admire Professor Turley’s blog posts on legal issues, I have made a 2023 New Years Resolution that I will not read any post he puts up about Hunter Biden’s laptop. So after reading this one, I only have about 45 such posts to go before the ball drops

      1. People can’t watch Turley flog this dead horse longer than he already has. It will still be dead.

        1. Svelaz gets to flog the Turley works for Fox News dead horse but he wants to sweep the collusion of Hunter and Joe with the Ukrainians and the Chinese away with his dead horse exclamation. Svelaz roars there is nothing to see here folks move along. The Hunter laptop horse is far from dead but Svelaz his doing his best to hurry along the horses demise before someone looks at its teeth to find out if there’s something rotten going on. It just goes to show that Svelaz is far from being an equine expert.

      1. I do not reply to people afraid to use their own names except to reply that I do not reply to people afraid to use their own names

  5. There are plenty of establishment Republicans who do not want to open that box and will do all they can to prevent it. Romney (the snake) is implicated too, along with John Kerry, Paul Pelosi, Jr. and many others. Lots of ‘family grift’ going on in the Swamp. The uniparty protects its own. Just remember how many of them are good old friends of Joe Biden. They keep blaming Trump for the midterms being less than a big red wave, yet there were dick moves galore from McConnell, McCarthy and others –like Lindsay Graham’s federal abortion ban nonsense. Republican “McLeadership” ain’t exactly working “for” the will of the voters in case you hadn’t noticed. They are working “against Trump” every way they can. “Blame Trump” is their new mantra (lie). Don’t believe it. And don’t believe for one minute Republican “McLeadership” will allow an investigation exposing Biden family corruption. They’ll just say “it’s best for the country” that we not open that can of worms when what they mean is it is best for them in the Swamp.

    1. So you’re saying Trump is completely blameless?

What about the MAGA nutties who ran on stupid for a Trump? They certainly helped didn’t they? Republicans didn’t get the midterms they wanted BECAUSE of Trump and his MAGA nutties.

      1. No, Trump has his issues too, but he has done far more to GROW the voting base with America First policies than any other Republican. He brought in blue collar, latino, black, etc. He grew the base. Without Trump, they will surely lose working class, minority voters — and GOP leadership will be fine going back to ‘same as it ever was’ Republican party, before Trump.

Biden gave his Mussolini speeches. Democrats ran on, “Trump is bad, MAGA is crazy election deniers” — when in FACT it is the Democrat policy platform that is truly crazy. They made sure the media was not talking about “Democrat crazy” –only Trump/MAGA crazy. Take a look at Fetterman’s ‘crazy’ policies. That is truly crazy. Nearly seventy-five percent of voters say the country is headed in the wrong direction under Biden’s crazy, harmful policies! But look over there! Trump/MAGA is the crazy stuff! It’s a lie.

Republican establishment (gloabalists, Never Trump) are blaming Trump saying “Trump is poison” etc, while not revealing their own inside maneuvering to prevent Trump/MAGA candidates from winning. McConnell actively worked against MAGA candidates. LIndsay Graham’s nonsense abortion bill gave Biden and Dems a big juicy, FEAR-mongering talking point: “They’re gonna take away your right to have an abortion!” They will ban abortion nationwide!” That alone motivated masses of young Democrat voters to get out and vote. Who put Graham up to it is my question. Who put him up to it? He will never be asked.

Trump did more to rally the base, grow the base, to get out and vote, he was fundraising he was out there working for candidates. What did McConnell do? What did the rest of the establishment types do? They actively worked AGAINST Republican candidates. McConnell is quite pleased with the result of his “campaign work.” “Never Trump” is fully activated. The talking points have gone out.

        1. Grow the base? All he did was pander to the most gullible bunch and that is a very small group of folks. Just because they are loud does not mean they are a bigger crowd. Don’t forget the he also shrunk the Republican based of actual conservatives.

Establishment republicans are blaming trump precisely because he is damaging the party beyond recognition. That is why republicans didn’t have their “red wave” and the disappointing quality of the candidates running on the republican ticket. Which included nut jobs, walking contradictions, and the clueless. All were turn offs for other republicans and they made their ire known by voting AGAINST Trump or not voting at all. That giant sucking sound of disappointment from republicans is all due to Trump. Trump is a liability for republicans and clearly they are not going to tolerate it if they keep getting these kinds of results.

          1. “….he also shrunk the Republican based of actual conservatives.”

No, Trump grew the base. The “actual conservatives” you speak of are the Never Trump coalition of Bush-Cheyny era Repub loons like the Lincoln Pedo Project, etc, who would rather grow the Democrat base than have America First policies/candidates elected to Congress.

            1. Nope, the base has been shrinking. His rallies have been smaller, and his supporters have dwindled to just the zealous fans and the nutties who get out of their basement only to go to the rally.

              1. The red wave failing is entirely on the national GOP’s fault. They kept pulling funding in crucial races at the last minute and they kept putting candidates in uncomfortable position. McConnell tanked his party just so he could remain, minority leader and put the blame on Trump

              2. GOP “McLeadership” circulated post election talking points: Blame Trump and MAGA.

They do not want America First/MAGA populists in Congress. They prefer to lose to Democrats.

The GOP just went through the entire midterm campaign cycle. They let Biden and Dems falsely paint MAGA and all Republican candidates as “extremists” and “threats to democracy.” No pushback from GOP.

Meanwhile, does anyone in the country know what’s in the GOP’s Commitment to America? No. How about what is in their Parents Bill of Rights? Nope.

                Succintly put:

                McCarthy
                McConnell
                McDaniel

                = McFailure (Intentional strategy)

          2. “quality of the candidates” That is another lie (talking point) being pumped out from the Never Trump/Blame Trump coalition of the establishment GOP.

            1. Anonymous, yes the quality of Republican candidates was very poor. Hershel Walker who is literally a walking Republican contradiction. Then there’s Mhemmet Oz who was no real Pennsylvania native. In Arizona you have a literal MAGA nut job vying for the governorship.

They were so bad, especially Oz who lost to a stroke victim. That’s pretty bad.

              1. Yes and that is more Dem/media lies. The truth is that Oz was a quality ‘moderate’ candidate, certainly compared to his brain damaged, utterly dishonest, radical opponent who campaigned in hoodies and basketball shorts. Democrats vote by Ideology above all else.

Contributing factors like the media helping to build sympathy for ‘stroke victim’ Fetterman as they hid the reality of his incapacity from voters. They painted his as ‘moderate’ when he is a radical extremist. No mention of fact that he can’t put a sentence together or even *think* normally due to brain damage.

There was no debate until most of “his” voters had already voted. There are many ways the Dems/media and Never Trump worked to “suppress” the vote. Oz and other MAGA were quality candidates, and certainly compared to ‘Democrat radical crazy’ they successfully shoveled down America’s throat as “moderate.” Democrats lie and deceive voters. It’s what they do very well, indeed.

                1. Dems can lie with abandon, because the media is in the bag working *with* them. Dems and their lies are rarely challenged by anyone in the media. Biden lies far more than Trump, certainly on major issues, yet we never hear the media panels talking nonstop about Biden’s flatout lies, do we? It’s not because the Big Guy doesn’t lie every time he opens his mouth; the media don’t want to make it an issue. They save that talking point to take aim at Trump and Repubs.

                2. You know, I’m thouroughly sick and tired of MAGA losers calling Fetterman “brain damaged”. Following his stroke, he has an impairment with processing sounds that causes sounds to be garbled. This is why he needed a teleprompter during his debate with Oz. That’s it, and it may go away and improve with time. His cognition and thinking processes are just fine and he expresses himself very well. This impairment is relatively minor and in no way would prevent him from serving as a Senator. Pennsylvanians believe in him and chose him over a TV performing quack who doesn’t even live in Pennsylvania. Attacks on his cognition are mean-spirited and unfair.

                  1. “I’m thouroughly sick and tired of MAGA losers calling Fetterman “brain damaged”.”

He is brain damaged. He had an embolic stroke that destroyed a portion of his brain. It is likely that his stroke affected other parts of the brain and he might have had more than one at various times. Because it is already almost half a year it is unlikely he will have much cognitive improvement. Without a direct interview you don’t know what his mental condition is and you are foolish for rendering a medical opinion when you have insufficient knowledge and information.

              2. What is worse is that Democrats demonstrated how stupid they were to listen to the press instead of replacing Fetterman with someone that functioned better. Everything was known in time to select a candidate without such problems

All the word now knows that idiots and voting Democrats are the same thing.

                1. Democrats will vote for a tree stump as long as it is has D for Democrat attached to it. Ideology above country, above all. It’s sick. It’s indoctrination.

      2. Dems and their media insisted their candidates and their policies are “moderate.” That is a lie. They successfully painted MAGA cadidates as extremists! That is false. Democrats/Biden policies today *are the crazy* extremists! Biden is unpopular and his extreme policies are even more unpopular. Yet it was Never Trump Republicans and corrupt media who helped ‘extremist’ Democrats win and moderate MAGA candidates lose. That is a fact.

        1. Biden is unpopular and his extreme policies are even more unpopular. Truth right there.
Democrat policies are radical and extreme. Truth right there.

MAGA candidates are dangerous extremists. Lie.
Trump is to blame for everything. Lie.

GOP Never Trump “McLeadership” is to blame. 100% Truth.

      3. “So you’re saying Trump is completely blameless?”
Find credible evidence of a crime.
That is what you need to investigate.

“What about the MAGA nutties who ran on stupid for a Trump? They certainly helped didn’t they? Republicans didn’t get the midterms they wanted BECAUSE of Trump and his MAGA nutties.”
You have jumped to the election ?

I will wait for the election to be over to start a post mortem.
        Republicans have clinched the house.
They have done incredibly well in NY – despite Zeldin falling short.
They have scared the Crap out of democrats in many places.
The purportedly absymal Trump candidates have done better than republicans in those states in many recent elections.

The Oz lost to a basket case is disappointing.
Democrats got wiped out in FL. Democratic strongholds that never voted republican flipped.
        Vance did better than expected.

AZ is still far from over – purportedly MAsters is still in contention – though That requires him to take something like 2/3 of the remaining votes.
The NORM – as in PA is that democrats and democrat mailin ballots show up late.

But aparently based on comparisons to 2020 the expectation from people who claim to know is that a significant portion of oustanding AZ ballots favor Republicans. Hobbs is only barely in the lead against Lake.

I am not holding my breath. But I will atleast wait until the dist settles.

As things stand right now the GOP is flipping NV completely – house, senate, Governor.
But by a very small margin.

If masters does not pull off AZ – GA is going to be one of the most expensive runnoffs in history.

  6. “The likely Republican takeover of the House could yield a slew of investigations in the months to come.”

Sure, the last time around they launched at least a half dozen investigations into Benghazi and cost the taxpayers tens of millions and other than some “gotcha” clips these congressmen could play on FoxNews yelling at witnesses the hearings produced nothing. But one of the former chairmen of these failed hearings has a regular gig on FoxNews. They had no real scandals to investigate under Obama so they pretty much made them up.

An investigation into influence peddling in Washington would probably be a good thing – but an investigation into Hunter Biden is like “I am shocked, shocked there is gambling going on. Your winnings, Senator McConnell. Thank you.”

    1. “They had no real scandals to investigate under Obama so they pretty much made them up.” Wrong. Plenty of Obama scandals, but they chose to not blow them up. They did a little show for the people, and per usual and never exposed the real scandal.

        1. Here are three. There was a big scandal when Obama did not release his birth certificate. Then when he released his birth certificate and contemporary newspaper birth announcements there was another big scandal that it was not the long form birth certificate. Then when he released the long form birth certificate there was still another scandal that this was Obama’s fault somehow because Trump had investigators in Hawaii and “you would not believe what they are finding.”

          1. “There was a big scandal when Obama did not release his birth certificate. Then when he released his birth certificate and contemporary newspaper birth announcements there was another big scandal that it was not the long form birth certificate.”

That wasn’t a scandal. Trump was making racist insinuations that Obama was not born in the U.S. The scandal was of Trump’s own doing. Obama didn’t have to provide his birth certificate to prove he was a citizen. The scandal was Trump making the claim that Obama was not a legitimate president. it was a racist claim by Trump.

            1. Svelaz……….Obama started the lie. At the beginning of his career in politics he “wrote” a book about his life up to that point. In the publisher’s promotion, it stated that Obama was born in Kenya.
I read that it was meant to add a texture to his story that would make him sound interesting.

              1. And the Truther thing was actually started by Clinton Aparatich Sydney Blumenthal.

Trump piled on, but I always got the sense he was tongue in cheek – he was just trying to tweek Obama.

        2. Fast and Furious, Lois Lehrner and the IRS and allowing his VP to take over the Ukraine portfolio making his kid rich. Or does a quid pro quo not count any more?

          1. Hullbobby, HUh? Those were not his scandals. LOL!!!

Fast and furious began before Obama was elected to office. Lois Lerner? What was the scandal. That she invoked the 5th? That was no scandal Obama wasn’t the one in front of the committee.

VP, Ukraine portfolio? That was not even a thing LOL!!

The fact that you had to struggle to search for very poor, I guess you can call them examples, shows just how fake your attempt was. That was pretty bad. Nice try though.

  7. Expose the cottage industry of influence peddling? Seriously?

When Hillary Clinton was Secretary of State, she ran the Clinton Foundation which collected money from foreign governments, companies and private individuals. And do you know why she got away with?

BECAUSE THEY ALL DO IT. IT’S EXPECTED. IT’S COMMON.

Hunter’s laptop is just small potatoes and a clownish effort by the Biden’s to play the game. At most, It’s an embarrassment to the elite.

    1. “When Hillary Clinton was Secretary of State, she ran the Clinton Foundation which collected money from foreign governments, companies and private individuals. And do you know why she got away with?”

      Because…it’s…legal.

  8. Is that a defense? Everybody does it. Thats like Russia where everyone wanted his piece of the action and there was no money left over to actually bring their military up to state-of-the-art or even close to that level in material and training and there was nothing apparently in their training for logistics. (Remember amateurs talk tactics and pros talk logistics) That 40 mile long traffic jam would have been annihilated by AAA suppression and a few A10 and F15 Strike fighters.
Maybe that “immunity thing” for politicians has run it’s course. Just finished reading Netanyahu’s autobiography and discovered that politicians in Israel have no immunity from prosecution. Of course then you can go overboard and a hostile “left wing Press” (sounds familiar) can hector the Attorney General to start investigations. Strangely Netanyahu pointed out that every investigation over the decades always involved Likud or their allies and not one was launched against Labor or it’s later iterations.
Seems to me there should be separate and independent corruptions task force that is permanent and focuses on congress , the executive , and Supreme Court and none others. A single law to establish the task force, bipartisan appointments and legal staff that is only hired for specific terms (5-10 years) and no extensions. They must then leave federal and state service for 10+ years after. (We don’t want performance affected by promises of lucrative appointments at the state and federal level)
Of course we could also let Twitter have access to all the records and charges just for transparencies sake. That alone might be sufficient.

  9. Yes, investigations can expose the more than the people could dream what is really going on. The grift coming out of Ukraine into the pockets of Senators and Representatives is massive. Its not just Hunter with 10% for the Big Guy. Multiply that by 100’s of others getting theirs. That’s just the grift coming back to US politicians.

    But investigations might expose “things”

Here in Iowa, a Dem incumbent Conceded yesterday, despite her falling just 2000 votes short. Well within the margin to ask for a state paid recount. She lost every county except the The County of the Capitol. Polk County, where she won by 26,000 votes. But the Democrat Party did not ask for that recount. To examine what happened in the Capital city is more scrutiny than the seat is worth. She lost every other county by 30 to 40+points. She would have to find more votes in Polk county, and she knew the cheat was already on in Polk County, so not interesting in exposing that.

  10. A cottage industry patronized by nation states involving billions of dollars, and resulting in vast intrusion by foreign interlopers working to destroy our ability to resist.
    What do you call that?

  11. Then let the box be opened…I don’t care what rats go down with the ship – they’re still rats. It is just one of many side-shows in D.C. that cause politicians to ignore the citizens they’re supposed to serve.

  12. Give me a break. Influence peddling amongst the political class? Just like Casablanca, I’m shocked, shocked there is influence peddling among our politicians.

Sure Joe helped his son. Along with about every other member of Congress, Governors, state legislators. Ad infinitum. The question I want answered is how many spies were shown secret and top secret documents by the orange beast formerly known as a president? And not just in his mary a logo fantasy land. How many times did he pull out documents in the White House to show off how “important” he is?

Sheeeeeeeeeeeeesh. Shocked, shocked there is gambling going on behind those closed doors.

    1. I’m fascinated . . . do you have evidence that Trump showed anyone without the proper clearance classified documents?

      1. There’s also no evidence that he didn’t. That’s why the DOJ raided his property because he lied about not having any more documents and he refused to hand over documents that did not belong to him. Can’t trust a liar can we?

          1. The DOJ sought and obtained a search warrant because Trump left them with no other choice. He stole classified documents, returned some, lied about them all having been returned, so the NARA got the DOJ, its lawyer, to obtain the warrant, which the FBI executed. They did everything they could to avoid the necessity of doing this, but he had no right to take the documents in the first place, to keep them after being asked to return them, to lie about returning them, but is now fundraising over it. And, people are stupid enough to give him money that he is free to spend however he wants until he declares his candidacy. The so-called “deep state” isn’t going to let some former television performer keep classified documents in a beach club just because he wants them.

  13. Standby for the Lying Troll Svelaz to once again tell us SCOTUS ruled that influence peddling is legal.

Then Svelaz should fully support an investigation that proves everything the Biden family has/is doing is legal.

    1. Olly, oh my how righty you are! I do fully support an investigation. I never said I didn’t. Can you say the same for the Trump family?

You have not been able to refute my claim that SCOTUS ruled influence peddling is legal. It certainly narrowed the definition of what corruption is. They did so because the government was applying the definition of corruption so broadly that it posed a serious conflict with the right to free speech. So by narrowing the definition of what the government can define as corruption they made it much, much easier to make influence peddling legal. Turley knows this and he’s only focusing on the Biden’s because that is the narrative that Fox News likes to peddle despite the fact that ALL politicians engage in the practice. Ironically Ted Cruz successfully argued that bribery is a form of free speech before the Supreme Court.

“The Court’s decision in FEC v. Ted Cruz for Senate is a boon to wealthy candidates. It strikes down an anti-bribery law that limited the amount of money candidates could raise after an election in order to repay loans they made to their own campaign.”

…”The idea is that, if already-elected officials can solicit donations to repay what is effectively their own personal debt, lobbyists and others seeking to influence lawmakers can put money directly into the elected official’s pocket — and campaign donations that personally enrich a lawmaker are particularly likely to lead to corrupt bargains. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) manufactured a case to try to overturn that $250,000 limit, and now, the Court has sided with him.”

      https://www.vox.com/platform/amp/2022/5/16/23074957/supreme-court-ted-cruz-fec-bribery-campaign-finance-first-amendment-john-roberts-elena-kagan

Again thanks to SCOTUS even bribery in this form is legal.

      1. Svelaz – I absolutely support investigating credible allegations of bribery.
        Not made up ones.
If you have a claim regarding Trump or his family that is illegal and credible – go ahead and investigate it.

But so far that is NOT what you have had. Trump continues to be criminally investigated for non-crimes.

We have Batschiff AG James and a Batschiff judge going off in lala land.

Literally lying to the IRS, The State, or the Bank about the value of assets – is NOT A CRIME.
Assets are not taxed. Profits on the actual sale of assets are – and you can not lie about that.
Actual lies to banks about the value of assets – are not crimes – Banks are required – both by borrowers, and by government rules, and by shareholders to do their own due dilligence. That is the business I am in.
But lest say they do not. Trump tells DB that some property is worth 400M and it is only worth 250M. He gets a mortgage for 300M 75%, the normal limit, and he pays off that mortgage over time – no crime. The bank lent money, received it back with interest.
Lets say 5 years in Trump defaults – and the Bank takes over the property. The 250M property has likely appreciated to atleast 300M
But even if it does not – the Bank sells the property for whatever it can get, and then it seizes Trump assets to pay off any balance if there is any.

Now this is not bribery no matter what.

With respect to Trump and Biden’s family – I am far more concerned about Trump – while president or Biden while Senator, VP, or president, than their families.

If you have evidence that Trump was enriching himself using the powers of the president either through his family or directly – go for it.
So far I have only heard ludicrously stupid claims.

Conversely there is a growing pile of evidence that VP Biden and possibly President Biden was acting corruptly.

I do not want to investigate Biden or Trump’s family to go after the family.
In both cases the legitimate target is Trump or Biden.

I am not interested in Hunter’s “influence peddling” – unless Joe was a part of it.

      1. Hullbobby, it’s quite defensible. That’s why you’re so frustrated. What is not defensible is your claim that the Biden family is criminal. What proof do you have that they have committed crimes according to the law? This should be simple since you know somehow.

By the way do you keep an excel spreadsheet keeping track of all my posts or do you include everyone else?

          1. I thought it was 100. Your math is atrocious. You’re posting as much as I am. Crazy ain’t it?

  14. In an earlier comment I expressed hope that 65% of Americans would vote for the country.

    I was hopelessly optimistic.

Dems voted party over country (in PA, they elected a vegetable and a dead man!!!).

I have my doubts that the people who voted “D” in this election really care about integrity.

Even if there are hearings that expose rampant Biden corruption, the lefties will ignore them.

    1. You poor snowflake, so precious and fragile. How about asking people what they think and respecting their opinion?

Yep, Fetterman had a stroke, Can you justify voting for Walker in GA? By his own admission, he should be a felon for paying for abortions. He has committed felonies against his family members.

      1. Bob, paying for the abortions you love is not a crime! Crimes against his family? You mean like Warnock running over his own wife?

So a person like Bob thinks that Walker is brain damaged but Fetterman just had a stroke??? Arguing with a liberal is like trying to gather water with your hands.

    2. @monumentclorado

Someone asked the other day how bad things have to get, and it would appear literal, abject fascism is the only thing that will make them up. When parents and grandparents can no longer afford to support their millennial and gen z kids and those kids have no opportunities in a wrecked country and *everyone* but the elite are suffering and struggling, if not being actively persecuted in some fashion – then, and only then it seems, looking around at the ash and the rubble and the empty cupboards, will they get understand. It is madness. And the trolls here (svelaz, anonymous, ad nauseam) are so adamant and prolific every single day regardless of what happens there is no question they are paid anymore. They are. Once again, that one man who is introducing actual free speech, which is guaranteed in our Constitution, to one silly web 2.0 platform where most people share what they had for lunch kind of says it all.

  15. We don’t need to open Hunter Biden’s laptop to learn about influence peddling. Trump and his family does it out in the open! Ivanka and China. Trump and his boys and Russia. Jared and the Saudis. You seem to have amnesia. Oh I know …..influence peddling is holy if Republicans do it.

    1. Justice (????!!!), it is YOU who seem to have amnesia. Wealthy Trump created and owned multinational corporations years before he became president. Biden was a nobody before he got into politics (and lied and fabricated his credentials in order to get into politics).

      1. Trump has a long history of grifting and scamming vendors. He’s also a cheater at heart with money AND his multiple wives. Trump’s kids have been doing what Hunter Biden has been doing too and it’s all perfectly legal. Trump has been relying on foreign banks to bankroll his real estate deals for years because American banks won’t lend him money.

Making deals with foreign firms is not illegal nor is making money. Turley loves to peddle this Hunter Biden “scandal” ad nauseam because he is pushing the narrative that the Biden’s “corruption” is somehow a crime or something nefarious desire the fact that the Trumps and nearly every politician in Washington has engaged on it. The sad fact is it’s legal and it’s common. Thanks to SCOTUS for whittling down anti-corruption and bribery laws because corrupt wealthy individuals successfully lobby SCOTUS to narrow the law as much as possible so they can continue to profit from the money they get from bribes and deals. So if you are upset about what Biden has been doing don’t blame him, blame the conservatives on SCOTUS.

        1. Svelaz is alone in not just ignoring the Biden corruption but actually denying it exists. Imagine being so politically blind that you cannot see what is happening right in front of your eyes because you just don’t want to see it.

          1. Hullbobby, you have NOT been able to articulate EXACTLY what is criminal about what the Biden’s did. What law specifically does it say that what they did was a crime or illegal? Even Turley can’t point it out. Can you do better than Turley?

            1. MAGA mavens don’t need proof. All they need is Hannity, Carlson, Ingraham and Levin to tell them what to believe. When you confront them with facts, they call you name or accuse you of being stupid, lying or both.

        2. Svelaz: Apologizing in advance for interjecting here, and with any due respect, SCOTUS did NOT rule as you say. This is the danger of open blogs that can harbor personal opinions represented as law or fact.
SCOTUS, in McDonnell v. United States, merely said that the jury instructions in the trial against former governor McDonnell, expanded the definition of “official act” requisite to a finding of fraud, influence, Hobbs Act violation, etc. (McDonnell and wife had accepted >$175,000 in loans and gifts from one party). The Court struck the jury instruction.
          Said the Court:
“To qualify as an “official act,” the public official must make a decision or take an action on that “question, matter, cause, suit, proceeding or controversy,” or agree to do so. That decision or action may include using his official position to exert pressure on another official to perform an “official act,” or to advise another official, knowing or intending that such advice will form the basis for an “official act” by another official. Setting up a meeting, talking to another official, or organizing an event (or agreeing to do so)—without more—does not fit that definition of “official act.”

As usual, it was the MEDIA that presented the decision as SCOTUS saying that ‘influence peddling was legal.’

Please stop getting your information from MEDIA. Go to the Court decision. Thanks anyway.

          1. Lin, I’ve read the entire McDonell ruling. Yes they are talking about the instructions to the jury and the term “official act” What you are not getting and the legal experts analyzing the ruling are saying is that SCOTUS narrowed the definition of corruption so much that it precisely defined what an “official act” entailed. The reasoning behind their ruling was very lengthy and complicated, and sometimes contorting. The government was using the definition of “official act” so broadly that anything involving gifts or money to gain access or influence would be illegal. SCOTUS made sure that mere influence peddling is not alway part of a politician’s “official acts”. They included the fact that peddling influence CAN be defined as exercising one’s freedom of speech and that criminalizing it would be a potential violation of the right to free speech.

I’ve read that ruling three times already and the legal experts are not wrong about what the ruling says. While they WERE talking about jury instructions they were also discussing the general problem of using anti-corruption laws so broadly. They did make it easier to freely peddle for influence and much harder to prosecute it. So much so that it’s nearly a waste of time to even try and THAT is why such “crimes” are never prosecuted UNLESS there is clear intent and motive. Mere influence peddling without those clear requirements are legal.

            1. Svelaz Svelaz Svelaz Svelaz:
THIS is what you said: “Thanks to SCOTUS for whittling down anti-corruption and bribery laws”’…blame the conservatives on SCOTUS..” (you also co-mingled “bribery” with “lobbying”)
-I merely took your VER BATIM words and pointed out what the Court VER BATIM said and ruled on.
If you were referring to a different SCOTUS case, please tell me. Thanks in advance.

        3. Svelaz mentions Trump scamming vendors and failure to pay them. Just deliver healthcare in an HMO to a state supported University. This is prepaid “healthcare” but the university would pay 90-120 days late and it often required threats to cease all payments to contracted physicians and hospitals to get them to act and pay and it was never about quality issues. Discussion with other non health vendors revealed the same thing. The University was the biggest thing in town and pushed power to the limit and beyond. Finally the town grew large enough and some vendors would forego contracts of any type with them because of non payment . It’s not just Trump. Remember size matters.

          1. HMOs scammed the American people. Sometime around the 90s, the GAO did an audit to see if the HMOs made more than allowed. There was a limit to the amount of profit permitted, and all sorts of controls existed but predictably didn’t work.

I think the profit margin was supposed to be 5%, but the audit showed around 68% profit.

Trump dealt with individuals, smaller entities, and banks. All those deals were transparent and based on contract.

Svelaz is ignorant of everything, so he will continue to spout mistruths and then say the opposite elsewhere. One cannot deal with such an empty head.

            1. Banks:
Chase and other banks are willing to loan to Trump. It is a matter of risk, interest rates, government regulation, and the proper disbursement of risk. At different times different banks in other parts of the world can provide less expensive loans.

              Other entities:
Contracts dominate the business world. Trump is careful in writing contracts and covering all his bases. Vendors want to maximize their income.

The buyer and seller negotiate and determine a price while signing a contract. As an example of the misinformation written by some on the blog, one member accused Trump of not paying his bill for paint. There was a contract, so the case went to court.

Who owed the money for the paint? A subcontractor hired the painter and bought the paint but left the job. I guess that Trump claimed the paint shop was suing the wrong entity. There were legal reasons that both sides had reasonable claims. Trump lost that case, but he could have won in another court. Those hating Trump don’t care about the truth. They only wish to feed their hate.

However, unlike Svelaz and a lot of leftists, not all people think that way. That is the reason this story is notable. The paint shop owner ended up voting for Trump. He stated that Trump was the right person for the job of POTUS.

        4. You want evidence of fraud – it is happening right now in front of your eyes.

If elections are incredibly close, the results are essentially random, as I noted when I suggested settling any election where the winner can not get 51% of the vote with a flip of a coin.

In the past 20 years there have been an incredibly large number of elections decided by less than 1% of the vote.

I am hard pressed to think of a single one that Republicans won.
I told you before that in 2020, MI, WI, PA, NV, AZ, GA were all won by Biden by less than 1% – often much less.
Do you know what the odds of flipping a coin and getting heads 6 times in a row are.

Fetterman beat Oz, Kelly has just been called over masters, Laxalt will likely lose next, and then Lake.
There are innumerable other close statewide races over the past 20 years withing 1% – can you name a single one republicans won ?

There are rare wins of razor close races by Republicans in house districts – but those are rare. Democrats still win overwhelmingly when an election is razor thin.

In GA the Walker Warnock race is razor thin. In the Runoff, the libertarian will be gone. Libertarians vote 60:40 republican.
Do you want to bet that Walker still loses in GA ?

When the actual fascists call those calling for LESS government fascists – You KNOW they will cheat to win.
When you tell others that democracy. life as we know it, …. are all gone if republicans win – you KNOW they will cheat to win.

You want people to beleive that the PA SC’s complete disregard for the PA Constitution and election law is really just the actually correct interpretation.

You do not seem to grasp that you, the left, democrats have repeatedly proven yourself dishonest.
You are constantly willing to do ANYTHING to get the outcome you want.

          Of course you would cheat.

We know that the Biden admin worked with Social Media to censor 120M posts.

Different country but the hearings in Canada right now are exposing the fact that the Trudeau Government KNEW that they did not need to invoke the emergency powers act to end the Ottawa truckers protests – that is presume that you even accept that there was a need to end the protests at all. The hearings are exposing that Trudeau invoked the emergency powers act with the INTENTION of provoking the protesters into violence.

The entire left is no different. None of you have any idea what morality is. Your just a bunch of brownshirts.

That said – you WILL lose in the end.
It is not an accident that Trump did well as president – despite YOUR lies and harassment.
It is the consequence of having sound principles, and constructing policies based on those principles.
In is not an accident that Biden is a failure – and that failure will grow worse.
It is the consequence of bad principles and constricting policies based on those principles.

      2. I don’t think Holmes has amnesia. He never had anything in his head in the first place. He thinks Sotomayor is a man.

    2. Homes, name one thing that a Trump kid did that is illegal. Now think of al the things that Hunter Biden did and then try commenting again. Here is a hint: If they are doing something in the open when the media hates them then it is probably legal whereas is Hunter is doing something in the shadows with a media that loves him it is probably illegal.

The fact that guys like Holmes will defend what the Bidens have done is why we have 53% of the voters in PA voting for a guy with medical mental issues who never held a job and can’t wear a suit properly against a heart surgeon. It is guys like Holmes that are ruining our country with their partisan selective outrage and ridiculous and short-sighted political outlook.

        1. Upstate, Biden Fetterman starts off with about 47% of the population in their pocket. Svelaz will say that they are brilliant, Anonymous will say that they are clean (Biden) and Holmes will say that they are better than Trump, even if Trump isn’t on the ballot.

      1. Hullbobby, what did Hunter Biden do that is illegal or criminal? Nobody has been able to articulate exactly what law or statute did he violate? Some say he failed to register as a foreign agent but that doesn’t apply to him. Others say he submitted a false claim on his background check paper work but those kinds of things are rarely enforced because prosecutors would have a hard time proving intent.

I can defend what the Biden’s have done because I can defend what he Trump’s have done. Both done things that are legal. Influence peddling is legal. Here’s a direct quote from Turley in an interview on Fox News,

“I mean, he was engaged in influence-peddling, perhaps one of the largest influence-pedaling schemes we’ve seen in Washington, which is considerably a long list of examples.

But influence-peddling can be done legally, but it is corrupt. It is perhaps the most damaging form of corruption in Washington. ”

He tacitly acknowledges that influence peddling is legal. He THINKS it’s corrupt, but that’s simply stating his personal opinion and not citing what the law says and that is the problem because he KNOWS the law on influence peddling makes it legal thanks to SCOTUS. Notice that he never mentions what laws or statutes the Biden’s are violating and he’s a law professor.

The biggest irony is that SCOTUS has continually eroded anti-corruption law in the name of free speech or limiting the government’s overreach by interpreting the definition of corruption so broadly. Turley doesn’t talk about that because it will undermine his carefully prepared narrative around the Biden “scandal”.

    3. Wake up and DO the research or take the ‘Justice’ off your moniker… the research shows the Bidens make the Trumps look like little kids in the influence peddling game while the Bidens are Decades long Elders and money masters to the point of selling our national security……..

    4. Holmes – You are funny!! You write words of rage and provide no logical or rational information. Let’s all go around just screaming like you
      – Hunter and his boy The Big Guy! SINOHAWK James Biden And Chinese foreign nationals with his boy VP Joe! Hunter Drugs and his girl prostitutes… Obama and Clinton’s from middle middle class to $15Million dollar mansions….

      Hey this is fun.

  16. LOL…sure. Like the DOJ, FBI, NSA, CIA, IRS, DHS, etc aren’t 100% corrupt for Democrats
Just admit…DC is lawless for Democrats
