No Laughing Matter: John Cleese Holds Line Against Calls to Cancel Scene in Life of Brian

We have previously discussed how comedians have been objecting that woke activists are killing comedy. The complaint is that a group of perpetually pissed off, humorless people are remaking the world in their own image. It began with college campuses which comedians are now saying are dead as venues since you cannot safely make any joke that insults any group other than white straight males or Christians or conservatives. Others have objected to hate speech laws limiting comedians, particularly after some comedians have been prosecuted for “malicious communications” or insulting groups or religious figures. Six out of ten students view offensive jokes as hate speech. This week, however, activists appear to have met their match in a legend of comedy who has opposed the cutting of  a scene from the movie The Life of Brian. No, activists are not upset with the endless jokes about Italians, Christians, and Jews. It is the scene involving a man who wants to become a women and have a child. John Cleese is refusing to yield.

In The Life of Brian, the scene involves “Stan” who announces that he wants to be a woman named Loretta and have babies.  Activists objected that it made fun of transgender people and demanded that it be cut from the film.

The scene shows Stan declaring “I want to be a woman… It’s my right as a man. I want to have babies… It’s every man’s right to have babies if he wants them.” After Cleese’s protest, the character snaps, “Don’t you oppress me!”

Some reported that Cleese had agreed to cut the scene. However, Cleese tweeted out a correction of the “misreporting.”

What is interesting is that Rob Reiner is reportedly working on the reboot. Reiner is known as someone who is a champion of the left in Hollywood. This may be an inauspicious start for the reboot effort.

Cleese is not alone in raising this alarm. Comedians including Chris Rock blamed “unfunny TV shows” on the fact that “everybody’s scared to make a move”. Ricky Gervais objected that the BBC is now paralyzed in fear of offending anyone.  Jennifer Saunders said people now “talk themselves out of stuff now because everything is sensitive.”

The same complaint has been made in the age of woke advertising that funny commercials seem increasingly rare as opposed to corporate virtue signaling.

The director of the classic comedy Airplane! observed that humor is being squeezed out of Hollywood and the movie today would have virtually every joke removed. David Zucker called it the “death of creativity.”

They are now set upon by a legion of humorless people who seek to reduce the world to their own narrow range of acceptable levity or irony.  These comedy giants are set upon by an Army of Lilliputians who have contributed little to culture beyond chilling artists and writers into obedient silence or compulsive comedy criteria.

Of course, Cleese could always use the line from Bryan’s mother: “He’s a very naughty boy! Now, piss off!”

  1. Jonathan: Boy, did I get a sharp reaction to my last post. “George” thinks I am a “mortal enemy of the American republic”. “oldmanfromkansas” calls me a “tormented soul”. “LeeVail” goes one step farther. He says “death is the only cure for his ‘tormented soul'”. Wow! Death threats are nothing new on your blog. But I thought such personal threatening language violated your “Civility” rule? Maybe you need to have a conversation with Darren Smith who can then advise “LeeVail” that death threats on this blog are not allowed.

    1. No one threatened you with death. LeeVail merely noted that death might relive you of your anxiety. He is right.

I would prefer that LeeVail did not express that – while not a death threat it is less than civil.
Your posts are all less than civil – should you bee banned ?

You characterized Trump’s post as a call to violence. It was not. Is it civil to LIE about what others have said ?

    2. You do seem to me to be a tormented soul. That’s not a threat, it’s an observation based on the things you write, such as: “That’s why I continue to say that as long as Trump is a free man he is a danger to our Democracy.” Since you wrote that, I assume you mean it, and as such, I feel sorry for you.

  2. In the spirit of ‘Orange Is the new Black ‘
“Perpetually Pissed Off” (New Generation) is the new “Sarcastic” (Old Generation)

  3. I remember hearing back in 2014 that Chris Rock no longer performed on colleges campuses because the students were too easily offended by jokes, but in the article I read, he blamed conservative students. Quote: “colleges have gotten way too conservative”. Now THAT’S funny!!

  4. Jonathan: By the way, this is Memorial Day when we honor those who gave their lives to protect our Democracy. No mention by you. Just total silence. Well, one guy who did speak out on this day was Donald Trump. In an unhinged tirade this is what the Trumpster had to say:

A call to arms? Yep. Trump knows he is the “nail” and Alvin Bragg, Fani Willis and Jack Smith are the “hammers”. And Trump knows that Stuart Rhodes and Enrique Tarrio are going to prison for a long time. So Trump is appealing to the new leaders of the Oathkeepers and the Proud Boys and other far-right neo-Nazi groups to load up and protect him from the “communists, Marxists and fascist ‘pigs'”. “Circle the wagons guys because they are coming for me!” That’s Trump’s call to his MAGA supporters and other far-right groups. What is Trump hoping for? Another insurrection? You betcha. That’s why I continue to say that as long as Trump is a free man he is a danger to our Democracy.

“[We gave you] a [restricted-vote] republic, if you can keep it.”

      – Ben Franklin

The American Founders eradicated dictatorship and the dictatorship of the monarchy.

The American Founders established a restricted-vote republic.

One man, one vote democracy IS the “dictatorship of the proletariat.”

You are a direct and mortal enemy of the American republic.

    2. So you’re implying Oathkeepers and Proud Boys are far-right neo-Nazi’s. Man, you need to quit smoking whatever dope you are smoking, if it’s not that then you are a moron.

    3. What part of Trump’s remarks is it that is unhinged ?

You impeached Trump for allegedly using the power to government to go after political enemies.
If Trump should have been impeached for asking Zelensky to look into the Biden crime syndicate – should we have a firing squad for those who used the IRS, the DOJ, the FBI to go after political enemies or protect political freinds ?

Honest I can not make sense of those of you on the left. You have no standards except double standards.

As to Marxist and communists – Where in the world has that worked out well ? Where in the world has that not resulted in millions of dead ?

Are you honestly going to claim criticizing communists and Marxists is wrong ?

And if your not a communist or a Marxist – why do you care ?

I hope and expect that The left in this country can be overcome without violence.

But there is no moral prosecription against the use of violence to defend against tyrants.

This country was born in violence. Concorde and Lexington were not peaceful protests.

“Whether ’tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles
      And by opposing end them.”

I hope and do not expect that we will have to take up arms against the left.
But the more tyranical you become the more likely that is.

Should the people of italy have taken up arms against Musollini ?
Should the people of Germany have taken up arms against Hitler ?
Are the members of the French resistance freedom fighters or terrorists ?
Should russians have taken up arms agains Stalin – or Putin today ?
Should the Chinese have taken up arms against Mao ? or Xi today ?

Should our founders have taken up arms against King George III ?

Are you saying that we should just sit back and take it as those in power censor us ?
Arrest us for protesting abortions ? For protesting the rape of our children ? For protesting the indoctrination of our children ?
For protesting a lawless and rigged election ?
For protesting covid policies that had no foundation in science – and those imposing them KNEW it ?

The problem is not with what Trump said.

The problem is that things have gotten so bad it needed to be said.

      1. All True! We have been beaten down to the point we are afraid to speak the most obvious truths in public. That man with a beard in a dress is merely a cross-dresser!

        1. I am libertarian. If you want to wear a dress that is fine with me. If you want to call yourself a woman – go ahead.
If you want to inject heroin – go for it. If you want to hire a prostitute – your business.

I do not have to approve of your choices to understand they are your right.

I draw the line when your conduct and demands harm or involve force to others.

You may not FORCE those who disapprove of your choices to bake you a wedding cake.

You may not FORCE yourself into womens lockerrooms, or sports.
You many not FORCE your self on our children against the wishes of their parents.
Children are not tiny adults capable of making their own choices – if you tell them they can fly they will jump off garage roofs.
          They are also not YOURS

You can call yourself whatever you want – you can not FORCE others to call you what you want.
Is that a lack of respect ? Yes, Respect, is earned it is not a right.

Nor is this unique to “trans” issues – they are just one battleground in a civl war that is already raging against a left that has gone beyond individual liberty and into tyranny

      2. The Constitution contains the framework to save a Democracy. It is being perverted to destroy one. The People have been mis-educated so as to not recognize the threats to their freedom, indeed that there are threats, and the only way back is to elect a great president. Good luck with that.

        1. The Constitution supposedly established a Republic, a democracy was never considered, the founders saw the dangers inherent in a democracy and opposed the idea.

        2. I fully understand your remarks, but I respectfully disagree.

Much of what we are dealing with is more fundamental than the constitution.

There is value in “bigness” – big business, big societies.
Bigger is often more efficient, but it is also more fragile.

History is the story of our figuring out how to sustain the value of ever larger tribes, towns, cities, states, nations.

We have gone too far with regard to “bigness” and it is failing. That failure is just a matter of time.

What is unique today is that we had a chance in 2016 for a natural small reversal of course, and the left pulled out all the stops to thwart what natural small reversal,
and the longer they succeed at holding back the tide the larger the tsunami that obliterates them will be.

The left WILL fail – that is inevitable. The most important question is what will replace them.
The longer the left resists their own failure the more draconian the backlash.

In 2024 it could be Trump cleaning house in the Federal government.

If that or something like it does not happen – the backlash will be larger and worse.

It is conditions the left is leading us to that produced Hitler in Germany.

          1. “It is conditions the left is leading us to that produced Hitler in Germany.”

John, that is the most important statement that can be made on this blog.

            1. I am not predicting anything specific – beyond that history teaches us that the combination of failure and chaos that the left is sewing today always ends BADLY,

And typically in some form of tyranny. That could be right tyranny, that could be left tyranny – does it honestly make the slightest difference ?
Is there consequential difference between Hitler and Staliin and Mao ?

Those on the left should be PRAYING for a Trump victory in 2024. 70% of americans think that a 2nd Biden term would be disasterous – and they are correct.
The worse the left does, the more they fail, the more chaos they sew, the more people will be willing to grasp for any strong leader that promises a return to order – ANY order.

Sewing chaos and failure is how we end up with despots.

              1. “does it honestly make the slightest difference ?”

Yes. What we worry most about is non-benevolent fascism or dictatorship. In today’s world the left is acting fascist without benevolent tendencies. The left is moving closer to those seen in the twentieth century such as Stalin, Mao and Hitler all of which increased government power, took control over property and censored their people.

                1. Those Aholes Biden Handlers are out of Beta now, going for full Global control & take over.

They call it innovation because they are confident that our pain and desperation will some day give birth to an innovative new solution.

      3. John Say,
You and I have had this conversation before about a civil war.
I agree with you statement: “I hope and do not expect that we will have to take up arms against the left.
But the more tyranical you become the more likely that is.”
I have stated before, we must avoid a civil war.
But the left seems hell bent on forcing their ideology down our throats. At some point, some one will do something incredibly stupid and will start the war.

“The problem is that things have gotten so bad it needed to be said.
        That, ^^^, needed repeating.

        1. To an extent we are already in the midst of that civil war. Elsewhere Turley has a post on the AHB fiasco.

That is a skirmish in the war. AHB accidentally gave “the silent majority” the means to SHOUT. Rather than fading this “boycott” is spreading.

Nor do I think this is about Trans Ideology – that is just the tip of the spear.

What I see is millions of people angry about the destruction of their country being given an easy means of expressing their anger.
And they have taken it, and this is spreading.

A part of my point is that it is not 1776 or 1860, we are likely already in a civil war. It MAY turn violent – though I would bet large amounts of money that the left engages in large scale violence first.

Absolutely there will be more and more people with serious mental health issues doing random acts of allegedly political violence, with disturbed manifesto’s that appear to lean right or left or both. I am not talking some guy with a swastica tattoo, or some disturbed trans person shooting up a school.
Those are mental health issues – though I would note that the mental health of the LEFT is far worse than that of the right.
Anxiety and depression in left leaning women under 30 is about 70%. for those in the right it is about 25%. Rates of anxiety and repression are near double a decade ago – but the rates of those on the right are nearly unchanged. We have an epidemic of anxiety and depression among those on the left,
and that CAUSES increased violence. So we will likely see larger amounts of LEFT wing violence rather than white – even among those who are nuts.

We have two centuries of experience with political revolutions – and civil war. It does not ALWAYS result in violence. And even when it does, it OFTEN is violence By those in power, against those opposing them.

Look at Iran or Hong Kong. or Tienanmen Square or the Berlin wall collapse and the subsequent sudden collapse of the USSR. Or Solidarity in Poland.
Or the Anti-Xi protests in China.

These were/are revolutions. Some were violent, some not. Some were successful, some not, Some have not been successful YET.

The AHB and spreading boycott is a HUGE deal – it circumvents all the left’s tools for controlling people.

You can not “cancel” someone for quietly boycotting a bear, or not shopping at Target. You can not call them out by name as a Bigotted, racist, sexist, homophobic transphobic nazi. you can not ruin their lives.

It is ALWAYS a mistake to try to control power by one way or another silencing people.

The left was terrified by J6. And while many on the right are correct – most of those being persecuted – and make no mistake this is persecution, are innocent.
No one is being jailed for actual acts of violence. they are being jailed for wrong think. And most people get that.

Regardless, the MESSAGE the right is getting is NOT – the election was legitimate. It is that did not work. We will have to find another way.

The current “boycotts” are ONE other way.

Big businesses are fragile. They need near perfect decision making to eak out small percentage profits.
Generally BIG is much more fragile than small. Big government is more fragile than small government.
Big cities are more fragile than small ones.

Leftist ideology requires the fragility of bigness.

Do not look at the AHB boycott as THE answer. Look at it as a new successful tactic in the civil war that we are already in.

Look for those not on the left to find new ways to bring the left to their knees.

The real danger of violence is from THE LEFT. Those in power who are losing control tend to act dangerously and without serious thought about holding power.

THAT is what all the anti-Trump nonsense has been about – NOT Trump.

2016 was a NORMAL return swing of the political pendulum, A slight right swing back from the failed leftism of Obama.
But those on the left instead of accepting and adapting WENT TO WAR. Since they have been repeatedly “doubling down”.

They have power – but their hold on Power is weak. You can beleive whatever you will about the 2020 election.
But there is ONE absolute truth – absolutely everything had to go for democrats to eak out out win against Trump.
While 2022 was not the Red Tsunami that the GOP hoped for, it still a very negative sign for democrats.

Once again EVERYTHING had to go for democrats – in this case just to barely hold on to power.
Unlike 2020 – Republicans WON the popular vote – by a fairly large number.

It is highly likely that as people are increasingly fed up with democrats and the left that at some point – everything going in democrats favor will no longer be enough. Possibly 1/4 of all House seats were determined by less than 1% of the vote. Nearly all significant democrat victories were by 1% or less of the vote.
Though they did not win – Republicans gained share – not just in battlegrounds – but in deep blue states.

I beleive that 2024 will be the Red Tsunami that was missed in 2022, But if not, then 2026 or 2028 – regardless, it is coming.
All trend lines are red. No amount of fraud, election rigging, etc can fix that.
There is a limit to how much you can game the system – and democrats are very close to that limit.

In 2024 the only question is Who will beat Biden. RFKjr is doing as well against Biden as DeSantis against Trump.

Some polls have 70% of americans who Do Not want Biden.

    4. The only time in the last 200+ years democracy has been in any semblance of danger has been in the last 40 years with open borders. Other than that it’s been the US policy to stick our nose in other people’s business. We were never in danger of vietnames, koreans etc.

    5. Three prosecutors with NO crime and no case – is your idea of a hammer ?

Do you not understand that when you bring garbage cases – whether you win or lose – you Make the argument that YOU have weaponaized government and that YOU are corrupt ?

This is nothing you could do that more effectively undermines trust in democrats than keeping up this nonsense.

    6. Yes, you have convicted people whose Crime was disbeliving YOUR nararative of saying so publicly.

Exactly what is it that these people actually did ? You do understand most of them were NOT at J6 ?
That they are NOT white supremecists or neo nazi’s.

That they did NOT plot anything -= except protesting an election that does not deserve our trust.

This is your idea of insurrection and sedition ?

Any you wonder why no one is buying Bud Light or buying from target.

YOU are a tyrant. YOU are a threat to peoples rights.
YOU conflate disagreement with your opinions with criminality.

Please tell me I am wrong.

Tell me that it is Trump who concocted a cockamamie store about Clinton colluding with Russia to steal and election and stood back as the FBI investigated what she and they KNEW to be a hoax ?

Please tell me it is Trump who has been lying to everyone about his families corrupt dealings with with foreign spy’s ?

PLease tell me that it is Trump that demanded that Social media censor damaging stories about him and his family ?

Please tell me that it is Trump who used the IRS to go after enemies ?

Please tell me that it is Trump that used the DOJ and FBI to go after enemies ?

Please Tell me that it was Trump sending SWAT teams to arrest prochoice protestors ?

Please tell me that it was Trump that sent the FBI to infiltrate catholic churches ?

Please tell me that it was Trump who took office with 6% growth and 1.4% inflation and within 2 years flipped that to 6% inflation and barely 1% growth ?

Please tell me ANYTHING trump has done that is comparably bad or corrupt compared to Biden and Democrats.

        1. “The response to bad speech is If there be time to expose through discussion the falsehood and fallacies, to avert the evil by the processes of education, the remedy to be applied is more speech, not enforced silence.”
          Whitney V California

    7. Enrique Tarrio is a far right, white supremecist neo nazi ?

Do you actually think before you post ?

Regardless, lets presume the Proud boys were an actual white supremecists neo-nazi group openly advocating for the overthrow of the US government.

So What ? We speak out against people with bad ideas. We do not silence them. And we do not jail them.

We jail people for actually violent ACTS.

No one entered the capitol with a gun, or a laser, or a rock, no one tried to burn it down. No one Maced a cop, or threw Molotov cocktails anywhere – much less in a police car.
No one used lasers to blind police.

The only murders on J6 were of protesters.

In short no one did they think that BLM and ANTIFA did accross the country for atleast 100 straight days in the Summer of 2020.
Over the summer there were thousands of arrests – many for far more serious offenses than anything that occured on J6.
in 91% of all cases – charges were dropped.

TODAY 2 years later DOJ is STILL trying to make sure that every grandmother who walked through the capitol on J6 is arrested, charged, prosecuted convicted and sentenced as harshly as possible. They are prosecuting people who peacefully walked into and out of the capitol. They are prosecuting people who did not enter the capitol.

Two Lawyers in NYC who through Molitov cocktails into a police car have gotten 15month and 18 month sentences respectively.

Chansley who NEVER did anything violent – received a 48 month sentence and spend nearly a year in solitary waiting for trial.

You would be wise not to talk about J6 – you are oblivious to the facts, and YOUR conduct and that of democrats should make you ashamed.

Eugene Debbs was before I was born – but I was still outraged over his political persecution. I looked on the MacCarthy era as a dark part of our past that we should be ashamed of. I supported the ACLU’s efforts to assure that Nazi’s could march through Skokie – and that the KKK could march through my town – and then I peacefully protested their marches. I have spent my life standing up for the first amendment rights of people – often ones I deeply disagreed with.

I have defended the free speech of Marxists – despite the fact that Marxism is the most repugnant and bloody ideology that has ever existed.
Responsible for over 100m murders in the 20th century.

And you are too fragile to tolerate people protesting a rigged election ?

“At long last – Have you no Shame ?”

If there is any justice in this world – you will be remembered with as much disgust as Sen. Joe MacCarthy.

  5. “When Comedy is Outlawed, Only Comedians will be Outlaws”
If so, then there’s a lot of Clowns in Washington D.C. in Big Trouble.

“Comedians don’t kill People, People kill People”
Just ask; Robin Williams,Phil Hartman, Andy Kaufman, and Lenny Bruce …
They’re all laughing at you now Kid.

  6. Jonathan: I think “Anonymous” got it just about right in describing your addiction to the “anti-woke” agenda: “Turley is paid to normalize a drastic shift right toward authoritarianism. I’ve spent much time wondering whether he’s truly cognizant of the sum total of his actions or inactions, or whether he’s just chasing the latest paycheck” I think it’s both. You have decided to sell your soul to Rupert Murdock for a generous paycheck. This column makes that relationship pretty transparent.

Gov. DeSantis is the current personification of the “authoritarian” style of politics. His current fight with Disney’s “wokism”, his banning of books and his attacks on teachers reflect these tendencies. Now that “DeSaster” has announced his candidacy on Musk’s Twitter he has declared (like Trump) that if he becomes the next President (no matter how unlikely that is) he will pardon most of the Jan. 6 insurrectionists. That probably includes Stewart Rhodes, the leader of the Oathkeepers, who just got sentenced to 18 yrs in prison for seditious conspiracy. DeSantis pardons will also most likely include Enrique Tarrio who was also convicted on the same charges. When it comes to the rule of law Trump and DeSantis are the outliars. Both remind me of S. American “caudillos”–strutting around declaring: “I am the law!”

Anti-woke is a modern-day mixture of McCarthyism and white grievances. DeSantis has incorporated this into his rule in FL and now his campaign for the GOP nomination. If DeSantis were to get the nomination and win the election next year ( as farfetched as that sounds) he would impose his “Stop Woke Act” nation-wide.

Who will you back in your columns during the coming 2024 presidential campaign? I suspect it will be DeSantis. Why do I say this? Because you have never criticized DeSantis for his attacks on “free speech” in Fl schools. Book banning by DeSantis has never seemed to find its way into one of your columns–despite the fact this constitutes a severe threat to the “free speech” rights of teachers and students. It’s a sad day when a well-known “constitutional scholar” can go to the “Crossroads”, like the Blues legend Robert Johnson, and sell his soul for a Murdock paycheck.

    1. “Jonathan: I think “Anonymous” got it just about right in describing your addiction to the “anti-woke” agenda: ”

A left wing nut statement about Turley that is likely correct.

Turley has taken the same oath that Thomas Jefferson has

I have sworn upon the altar of god eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man.”
      – Jefferson to Dr. Benjamin Rush, September 23, 1800

Hostility to “wokeness” is a virtue.
I can not fault Turley for an addiction to the truth and animosity towards those who seek to silence it.

The anti-woke “agenda” – which is nothing mere than “eternal hostility towards woke tyranny is a virtue

    2. Holy crap, the projection is amazing in this one.

Face it, you and the rest of the left simply want to tell people what to do and how to do it. Given their record of success in doing anything beneficial for mankind, America, or any non-political-profiteer, O-fer, you’d think they’d stop, but apparently they know nothing else. They are the totalitarians, they are the censurers, they are the anti-freedom coalition, and they must be purged because they fail to learn or yield.

    3. You’re so stupid it’s funny. You should rant and rave like that on stage. It’s comedy gold.

    4. Some Books have always been banned in America–by conscientious and discriminating Librarians. The books were there, for Mature audiences.

      1. Banning books is NOT the same as curating what is available in a school for kids.
It is also NOT the same as deciding what a public library will spend its limited resources on.

Censorship is when Government uses actual or implied force to restrict what private people are free to say and more importantly to hear.

    5. I wish that you could state what you are trying to relay a bit more concisely. I believe you can do so without bringing up DJT or any person for that matter that has nothing to do with this mindful op-ed about free speech. I, too, have to bite my tongue and refrain from blaming “any politician” for the world’s woes.

“In The Life of Brian, the scene involves “Stan” who announces that he wants to be a woman named Loretta and have babies.”

    – Professor Turley

Now there’s a novel idea: American women having babies…

…in numbers sufficient to grow and defend the nation.

Where in the world does that bit of madness come from?

NEWSFLASH – The American fertility rate is in a “death spiral,” more Americans die than are born.

    Where’s the future is disappearing?

Illegal aliens are zero “…days away from fundamentally transforming the United States of America…” from a European “melting pot” into an inscrutable global goulash.

  8. Before the election of Trump in 2016, we did not know how far the left was willing to go in denying their fellow Americans the rights protected by the Constitution, including freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom from unreasonable searches and seizures, the right to due process, and equal protection under the law. We now know that none of these rights are sacred to the left. The re-election of Trump in 2024 will be a massive victory for the Constitution and freedom. Vote Trump.

    1. Wouldn’t it be even more wonderful if the country could recover from this divisiveness utilizing our Constitution and legal freedoms Without Trump?

      1. carolechuck, we owe Trump a debt of gratitude. Without him we would not know about the sell out of the Main Stream Media to the government complex. We would not know how far the left has gone to keep you from saying or hearing what you want to say or hear. It was Trump who correctly called it fake news. If your looking for a Pope as President you will be sadly disappointed. Who else would have stood up in the face of the totalitarians? Jeb Bush? Mitt Romney? Some Republicans say they like Trump they just wish he wouldn’t tweet so much. Without Trump those who operate in the shadows would have never been exposed while they slowly but surely took your freedoms away. The likes of Jeb Bush and Mitt Romney would have stood idly by. Make America Great Again has never had more meaning.

        1. Trump is a con artist, and his is the face of a wannabe totalitarian. His supporters prefer his con to the truth.

          1. We supporters of Trump want to know the truth, but you naysayers are only copy and past with minimal reading comprehension.

Why not tell us why Trump was more of a totalitarian than any president of the 20th century? Let’s see if you have a brain equal to the size of your mouth.

          2. “Trump is a con artist, and his is the face of a wannabe totalitarian. His supporters prefer his con to the truth.”

            How so ?

I do not like some of Trump’s policies. But it is beyond any argument that to the extent humanly possible Trump- delivers what he promises.
That is pretty much the opposite of a con artist.

As to being a wannabee totalitarian – it is not Trump that games the laws all over the country to win an election.
It is not Trump that engaged in massive censorship – both through government and through big tech to silence those voices he disagreed with.
It is not Trump who used the government, the IRS, the DOJ, the FBI to target enemies and favor friends.

What is it that Trump has done – beyond stalling YOUR efforts towards authoritarianism that you deem to be wannabee totalitarianism ?

Are you so steeped in newspeak that words no longer have any meaning ?

What does “con artist” mean in your world ? In mine it is those who are deceptive – who say one thing and deliver another.
Trump delivers what he says – that is the OPPOSITE of a con artist.

And it seem that is what you actually hate about him – that he is NOT a con artist.

What does totalitarian mean in your world ? In mine It is those who use power to infringe on the actual rights of others.
What actual rights has Trump infringed on ? Has he silenced your speech ?

          3. One of the reasons RFK, who was a Biden voter in 2020, is running for president in 2024 is his observation that the FBI, the DOJ, the CIA, the Pentagon, the FDA, the CDC, Big Tech, Big News, Wall Street, and Big Academia share a common desire to suppress information that hurts the left, and to amplify—and sometimes create—information that hurts the right, The information suppressed by the left includes, but is far from limited to, reports showing that Ukraine is losing the war against Russia, reports on the negative side effects of COVID vaccines, video of the massive illegal immigration on our southern border, data showing the crimes committed by illegal immigrants, data showing mental illness among transgender people, and reports on the influence peddling for cash engaged in by the Biden family. The information amplified by the left includes, most notably, the false 2016 Trump-Russia collusion story, which was manufactured by the Clinton campaign and for which the NY Times won a Pulitzer Prize. Also taking note of the rampant manipulation of the truth by the left are 2020 Biden voters Elon Musk and Tulsi Gabbard.

      2. Hi Carol,

Wonderful, but not likely! Ideally, Trump will be the candidate with DeSantis his VP running mate. In any event, drastic actions will be required to restore sanity to our nation after this Hellish Biden-Woke nightmare.

      3. Those who are attacking Trump will attack anyone seeking to protest our constitutional and legal freedoms.

Trump is not the problem for those on the left, it is our constitutional and legal freedoms that are the problem.

Look around – anyone that stands up to woke tyranny is smeared in exactly the same way as Trump.
Replacing Trump will just change the target.

If Trump dropped out of the election – do you think that DeSantis would face less bitter and virulent attacks ?
If DeSantis dropped out – it would be Scott or Halley, or whatever other Republican dared to stand up for our rights and freedoms that was viciously attacked ?

Look at the bitterness of the attacks the left wages on its own who dare deviate from woke dogma.
Alex Berenstein, Matt Taibbi, Glenn Greenwald, Tulsi Gabbard, Michealk Schellenberger, Barri Weis, are ll on the LEFT.
Even JK Rowling is not spared the vicious attacks of those on the left.

Anyone who stands up for individual rights and freedom will be bitterly attacked.

What is most disturbing is that we are actually divided over freedom.

    2. “Crazy Abe” Lincoln threw the baby out with the bathwater. Lincoln seized power and threw the Constitution out with reprehensible slavery. His socialist (“The goal of Socialism is Communism,” Vladimir Lenin) successors chose a path Progressive toward communism. They took the ball and ran with it all the way to the present-day Union of American Socialist States (UASS):

      – Central Planning (EVs, solar panels, electric stoves, etc.)

      – Control of the Means of Production (i.e. unconstitutional regulation)

      – Redistribution of Wealth (From each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs)

      – Social Engineering (Affirmative action, forced busing, non-discrimination (discrimination is the first step of freedom) and fair housing laws, DEI, etc.)

The rights, freedoms, privileges and immunities provided to Americans by their Constitution and Bill of Rights are gone.

They are “Gone With The Wind” in the name of the “Party,” the Communist Party.

    3. “Before the election of Trump in 2016, we did not know how far the left was willing to go…”

      – specos

      Wait! What?

All Americans didn’t know how far the left (i.e. then republican) and “Crazy Abe” Lincoln were willing to go as far back as 1860?

Lincoln threw the baby out with the bathwater; he threw the Constitution out with reprehensible slavery, which must have been abrogated by legal means.

      1. Lincoln a leftist? Tell that to the local governments and school districts across America who, in 2023, are removing Lincoln’s name from public buildings and tearing down his statues.

Now, Lincoln certainly suppressed various Constitutional rights of southern sympathizers during the Civil War, which was illegal. And, during WWII, FDR certainly suppressed the Constitutional rights of Japanese-Americans, which was also illegal. In both cases, however, was there a wartime environment. In neither case was there a simultaneous effort by federal law enforcement agents, federal prosecutors, federal judges, federal spies, local governments, corporate leaders, and journalists to bring down a sitting president.

        1. ANTE UP, COMRADE!

Lincoln coined or adopted the Marxist terms “capitalists” and “fleece the people” in 1837, at least:

“These capitalists generally act harmoniously and in concert, to fleece the people.”

          – Abraham Lincoln, from his first speech as an Illinois state legislator, 1837

“Everyone now is more or less a Socialist.”

          – Charles Dana, managing editor of the New York Tribune, and Lincoln’s assistant secretary of war, 1848

“The goal of Socialism is Communism.”

          – Vladimir Ilyich Lenin

“The workingmen of Europe feel sure that, as the American War of Independence initiated a new era of ascendancy for the middle class, so the American Antislavery War will do for the working classes. They consider it an earnest of the epoch to come that it fell to the lot of Abraham Lincoln, the single-minded son of the working class, to lead his country through the matchless struggle for the rescue of an enchained race and the reconstruction of a social world.”

          – Karl Marx and the First International Workingmen’s Association to Lincoln, 1864

Letter of congratulation and commendation from Karl Marx to Abraham Lincoln:

“The clause in the Constitution which authorizes the suspension of the privilege of the writ of habeas corpus is in the ninth section of the first article. This article is devoted to the Legislative Department of the United States, and has not the slightest reference to the Executive Department.”

“I can see no ground whatever for supposing that the President in any emergency or in any state of things can authorize the suspension of the privilege of the writ of habeas corpus, or arrest a citizen except in aid of the judicial power.”

“I have exercised all the power which the Constitution and laws confer on me, but that power has been resisted by a force too strong for me to overcome.”

          – Chief Justice Roger B. Taney, May 28, 1861

“ON DECEMBER 3, 1861, a former one-term congressman, who had spent most of the past dozen years studying dissident economic theories, mounting challenges to the existing political order and proposing ever more radical responses to the American crisis, delivered his first State of the Union address as the sixteenth president of the United States.

“Long before 1848, German radicals had begun to arrive in Illinois, where they quickly entered into the legal and political circles in which Lincoln traveled. One of them, Gustav Korner, was a student revolutionary at the University of Munich who had been imprisoned by German authorities in the early 1830s for organizing illegal demonstrations. After his release, Korner returned to his hometown of Frankfurt am Main where, according to historian Raymond Lohne, “he was one of about fifty conspirators involved in an attack upon the two main city guardhouses and the arsenal at the police facility and jail. This admixture of students and soldiers had planned to seize cannon, muskets, and ammunition; free political prisoners accused of breaking press-censorship laws, and begin ringing the great Sturmglocke (storm bell) of the Dom, the signal for the people to come in from the countryside. At that point, the democratic revolution would be announced…. Unfortunately, they were walking into a trap…. Betrayed by both a spy in their midst, and the reluctance of the common people to rise, nine students were killed, twenty-four were seriously wounded, and by August 3, 1833, Gustav Körner found himself riding into downtown Belleville, Illinois.”
“Within a decade, Korner would pass the Illinois bar, win election to the legislature and be appointed to the state Supreme Court. Korner and Lincoln formed an alliance that would become so close that the student revolutionary from Frankfurt would eventually be one of seven personal delegates-at-large named by Lincoln to serve at the critical Republican State Convention in May 1860, which propelled the Springfield lawyer into that year’s presidential race. Through Korner, Lincoln met and befriended many of the German radicals who, after the failure of the 1848 revolution, fled to Illinois and neighboring Wisconsin. Along with Korner on Lincoln’s list of personal delegates-at-large to the 1860 convention was Friedrich Karl Franz Hecker, a lawyer from Mannheim who had served as a liberal legislator in the lower chamber of the Baden State Assembly before leading an April 1848 uprising in the region—an uprising cheered on by the newspaper Marx briefly edited during that turbulent period, Neue Rheinische Zeitung—Organ der Demokratie.

“Even as they agreed on homesteading, Greeley and Lincoln wrangled over the timing and scope of an emancipation proclamation. The editor joined Frederick Douglass in demanding that the president take steps to make the Civil War not merely a struggle to preserve the Union, but “an Abolition war.” Even as Greeley and Lincoln exchanged sometimes pointed letters, the Tribune’s longtime managing editor Charles Dana was now working for Lincoln. Officially assigned to the War Department — where he would eventually serve as assistant secretary — Dana’s real role was as an aide and adviser to the president on questions of what the former newspaperman described as the “judicious, humane, and wise uses of executive authority.” That Lincoln spent much of his presidency reading dispatches from and welcoming the counsel of Marx’s longtime editor—like the fact that he awarded military commissions to the numerous comrades of the author of The Communist Manifesto who had come to the United States as political refugees following the failed European revolutions of 1848—is a shard of history rarely seen in the hagiographic accounts that produce a sanitized version of the sixteenth president’s story. In the years following Lincoln’s death, his law partner and political comrade, William Herndon, complained that Lincoln’s official biographers were already attempting “to make the story with the classes as against the masses,” an approach that he suggested “will result in delineating the real Lincoln about as well as does a wax figure in the museum.”

          – ISR International Socialist Review

        2. “These capitalists generally act harmoniously and in concert, to fleece the people.”

Specos, Georges quotes on Lincoln are wrong, taken out of context or twisted. I provided the complete quote many times and corrected George’s mistakes. Unfortunately, George is in competition with Pinochio to see who can make his nose longer.

Lincoln protected the people’s money from being spent to fund private quarrels. The quote follows and then another quote by Lincon .

“I am decidedly opposed to the people’s money being used to pay the fiddler. No one can doubt that the examination proposed by this resolution, must cost the State some ten or twelve thousand dollars; and all this to settle a question in which the people have no interest, and about which they care nothing .
***************These capitalists generally act harmoniously, and in concert, to fleece the people,******
and now, that they have got into a quarrel with themselves, we are called upon to appropriate the people’s money to settle the quarrel.”

          Another Lincoln quote:
“It is best for all to leave each man free to acquire property as fast as he can. Some will get wealthy. I don’t believe in a law to prevent a man from getting rich; it would do more harm than good.” ___Abraham Lincoln

    4. Trump is an expert at waging public frauds, which is one of the weak spots in our Constitution. So, until we fix that, no way. But, I’ll vote for an honest, ethical public servant who is committed to a post-racial meritocracy, diligent enforcement of immigration law, fiscal conservatism, collaborative problem-solving, excellence in education, and responsible environmentalism. No-nothing blow-hards need not apply.

      1. “Trump is an expert at waging public frauds, which is one of the weak spots in our Constitution.”

Pbinca, If Trump is such an expert you should be able to name a few big ones and defend your premise. I will wait.

  9. Good for John Cleese. Good for J.K. Rowling. They are refusing to comply with the woke bullies, and in so doing showing us all that it’s possible to resist the woke’s particular brand of fascism.

  10. Mayor Rudy Giuliani slaps Trump & calls him a dirty boy. Donald is a gentleman because of that special scent. Smell matters!

    1. Hilarious!!! That’s in the spirit of Milton Berle, Jack Lemon, Walter Matthau and great comedy and burlesque in the past.

        1. Almost no one cares about “drag”.
Further most people accept that we should not make law precluding adults form altering their bodies to resemble the other sex, or taking hormones.

Our individual liberty – whether that is to alter our bodies, or to smoke, take drugs, engage in prostitution – all of which are no business of the law,
does not and can not require that others must accept and even condone our choices, or that we can compel others to support or encourage our choices.

Compelled speech is a violation of the individual liberty of others. You are free to call yourself whatever you want. You can wear a name tag, and most of us may politely choose to call you what you wish. But you can not require other people to use or not use any words in the way that you demand.

Your rights to do as you wish as an adult – so long as you do not harm others, do not include imposing your wishes on other – much less the children of others.

If you have a penis – stay out of restrooms and locker rooms where girls are present.

If we are going to allow the exclusion of men from some things we choose to reserve for women – such as women’s sports, that must exclude all those with Y chromosomes, other wise nothing is actually exclusive to women.

Your right to attempt to live in a reality of your own making does not allow you to FORCE others to live in that same reality.

  11. Humorless. Joyless. Empty. Sad. Pathetic. Soulless. All descriptors of the woke left.
Tonight I think I will watch Blazing Saddles followed up with Airplane.
