“You Don’t Listen to the Press . . . I’m Telling You”: Post Columnist Philip Bump Strikes Out at Those Questioning Prior False Claims

I recently wrote how the Washington Post issued a statement that declared that the newspaper was “standing by” columnist Philip Bump on his proven false claims on subjects ranging from Lafayette Park to Russian collusion. Bump’s prior claims have not only been conclusively shown to be false but other major media outlets have now rejected those claims. However, the Post claimed this week that they are in fact true in response to one of my earlier columns.

Now, Miranda Devine at the New York Post has written about a meltdown by Bump in a podcast interview with Noam Dworman, owner of New York’s own Comedy Cellar. Dworman had asked Bump to explain some of his claims and Bump offered one of the most vivid examples of the new media and it is chilling. After declaring that “I’m gonna lose my mind,” he stormed out of the interview after refusing to address the contradictions and dubious claims in his prior columns.

Dworman’s podcast interview stands as one of the most revealing and vivid examples of how the media has changed in the age of rage.  Bump moves quickly from the conversational to crazed when simply asked about the basis for his claims in the Washington Post.

Dworman was asking about the mounting evidence and contradictions in the Biden corruption scandal. Some of us have said that there is evidence of obvious corruption and influence peddling, but more investigation is needed to establish any basis for impeachment or criminal charges involving President Biden.  Bump, however, will have none of it. The Post writer (who demanded investigations of a wide array of Republicans on false stories with little evidence) is vehement that there is nothing to see here . . . and the public just has to take his word for it.

Dworman remains polite and pushes Bump to simply engage him in explaining some of the countervailing evidence. Bump responds “I just I’m gonna lose my mind. I’m gonna lose my mind.”

As the interview shuts down, Dworman asks “is there nothing we can talk about … half the country believes this stuff.”

Bump: “I know, because half the country doesn’t actually dig into the issues.”

Dworman: “Here’s your chance to disabuse people. They don’t read the Washington Post.”

Bump will have nothing of it as Dworman continues to try to get him to explain his controversial writings: “There’s just no point, because all you want to do is you want to have me here as the putative expert so that you can present me with things that have been debunked multiple times that I’ve written about.”

Dworman: “What’s been debunked?”

Bump: “These, these claims. I’ve written about this, this argument about his dad calling him. I’ve written about this. Did you read what I wrote?”

Dworman: “It’s not debunked. Neither of us were there.”

Bump: “Well, I debunked it in the standpoint that I’ve already addressed this and presented the counterarguments to it.”

Of course, Bump has been repeatedly shown to have pushed false claims and then refused to admit to his errors. Moreover, he has repeatedly been criticized for not honestly presenting the counterarguments.

Dworman makes another valiant effort: “I have two issues here. One is Joe Biden’s behavior and one is the issue of the press. The press actually bothers me more than Joe Biden.”

Bump, however, has all but left the building: “Because you don’t listen to the press. I’m sitting here and I’m telling you, you’re wrong about these things, and you don’t listen, and you continue to insist upon things that are, you know, parsing of language. And it’s just, it’s this is why I keep saying it’s silly.” He then says that he is leaving.

Dworman responded “Well, it’s a shame because this is a good conversation.”

Bump: “It’s not a good conversation, because you refuse to listen to what I’m saying to you. You asked me on to present evidence. I keep telling you.”

However, what he “keeps telling” Dworman and the public is to just accept his conclusions and not question his support and analysis.

Bump then walks out with a statement that captures perfectly the new media. He first attacks independent journalist Matt Taibbi and says that he has “an agenda.”

Dworman delivers a haymaker in response and states “You have no agenda.”

That is when Bump delivers his exit line that foreshadowed the Post statement on my column: “I do have an agenda … My agenda is to do my best to try and present accurate information to the public. And I have an institution behind me to hold me to account when I don’t do that, which I think is an important consideration.”

Indeed, the Post would then stand entirely behind Bump and claim that all of his false statements were true.  Even when other media have acknowledged that these claims were false, the Post insists that they remain true. Thus, the Post is now saying that the following are true despite findings by inspector generals and special counsels to the contrary: (1) Bill Barr did order the clearing of Lafayette Park for the Trump photo op, (2) Barr also lied when he denied the use of tear gas by federal personnel in Lafayette Park, (3) there was never any spying on the Trump campaign by the FBI, (4) Hunter Biden’s laptop was seeded with Russian disinformation, and (5) the Clinton campaign was not behind false Russian collusion claims. It is all now deemed true by the Post. It appears that, if “Democracy dies in darkness,” journalism more often dies in the light of day.

After all, the problem is not that they are false but that people just “don’t listen to the press. I’m sitting here and I’m telling you, you’re wrong about these things, and you don’t listen.”

Update: Bump later objected to the coverage as misleading and unreflective of the interview as a whole. In the interview, he states that the interview had gone longer than originally planned. I added this video version of the interview posted by Live From the Table to help viewers reach their own conclusions. Notably, around the 13 minute mark, Bump is asked about how the Ukrainians were supposed to take the involvement of Biden’s son on one of the most corrupt companies in the Ukraine and a company then under investigation for corruption. Bump admits that the “entire reason that Hunter Biden was on the Burisma board was absolutely too present the image of the Bidens being involved in Burisma.” Bump also admits that this was an influence peddling operation by Hunter and others, but insists that there is no basis to suggest that President Biden was part of the scheme.

    Too late!

  2. The Clintons started the whole “debunked” canard whenever one of their scandals was emerging. They also used the old “that’s old news” or ” that’s already been litigated”, two things that actually never happened.

I repeat what I stated earlier, what the liberals need is the dreaded follow-up question. KJP never gets the follow-up after one of her blatant lies. Or how about someone ask Biden about his “house fire” or his “oil cancer” or talking Strom Thurmond to vote for the Civil Rights Act in 1965 while HE WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL?!?!?

    1. Please remember that Bill Clinton, the HUSBAND OF AN FBI TARGET, met with the AG at the time at an out of the way airport in AZ weeks before the FBI DID NOT INDICT his wife. He said, and I quote, “we talked about our grandchildren”.

I guess if we were stupid enough to let the press lie to us then we deserve the beating we are taking from our press today.

One thing I love is that the Bump story is gaining traction, the NY Post is on it and it will show the world how vapid the WAPO and Philip Bump truly are.

      1. Follow up question to bill should have been, “really, how many grandchildren does she have and what are their genders?”

      2. HullBobby,
The question I have is as this story gains traction, will the WaPo via Bezos dump Bump as a liability?

    2. I’m not a defender of Joe Biden but in1965 he was 22 years old, and still seven years away from his first Senate term. Of course he was lying, it happens every time he opens his mouth.

    3. I mentioned before this very thing about follow up. The last time biden said he never talked to anybody about hunters business, Ducey should have asked him what he and Arthur talked about for 2 1/2 hours at the White House. what I didn’t realize was the White House had already “debunked” that, saying that archer was visiting on behalf of his son and his school project. Problem is, they had already refused to release any visitors logs that were “strictly personal”. Archer was listed on the official business call log.

  3. It’s coming down to the wire with these obfuscating propagandists for the prog/left. They have, literally, lied themselves in to a corner and are melting down when they realize they either have to admit that they were, and still ar, mere agents for the prog/left spewing whatever falsehoods that are needed to quell their sheeple base, OR they need to admit that the conservatives were, and still are, spot on about what has been happening since Woodrow Wilson first used the executive office as a pipeline for socialism into the very infrastructure of our government and education industry.

    1. Maybe RFK Jr will be the one to show the left how their leaders and media have lied to them for years and years and years.

It took the many on right a while after Iraq II to start to buy the fact they were lied to. The fact the establishment gop wouldn’t let go of power cost them the 2008 and 2012 (and 2020) elections. Only Trump ripping power from it saved us from the nightmare scenario of 16 years of obamma, obamma, clinton, clinton. Imagine where we’d be if Trump didn’t break that up. Stolypin’s Coup and then the Russian Revolution – one hundred years later…

      1. I am more certain that the prog/left will annihilate RFK Jr before they would allow that to happen. These mis-educated progressives have been indoctrinated into believing that they, alone, hold the answers to that timeless quest for human utopia created by mere human endeavor and they enjoy the power that this delusion gives them, they will not relinquish that believe willingly.

  4. There are comments herein decrying Turley and in support of Bump which bring us, once again, to argue the question of how beautiful the Emperor’s new clothes are.

  5. The L Park was not proven to be untrue, because there is no way to disprove it, but no evidence has shown it to be true. Same thing with the Russians working with Trump. But both were strongly suspected and it was worth investigating. At this time neither is likely to be true.

    1. Well, thats a start at least. The truth is regarding LP, it doesn’t really matter. The conduct of the protestors there warranted clearing them, long before they did.

    2. The L Park was not proven to be untrue
      priove
The trolls here need a 9 week coarse learning the difference between ‘prove’/=’evidence’

  6. Bump lied on the podcast. He stated he is “going to lose my mind”.

Fact: Bump, WaPo, MSM Left have LOST their minds, past tense, if they ever had one.

  7. I believe most liberal “Lost Their Minds”! They are incapable of Debate or logic! They are just hate filled, greedy and HYPOCRITES!

  8. I shall qualify my comments by stating I greatly admire and respect Professor Turley and very much enjoy his articles, comments, and views even when I sometimes disagree with his political views. When it comes to his discussion of the Law, Constitution, and Legal Procedure I hang upon his every word with certainty of his being correct.

That being said…..the Professor is talking about the political party that he has admitted as being the one he supports by his vote…..which certainly is his right to do…both in talking about the Party and voting for its candidates.

The Professor fails to note the similarity between Bump’s reaction to being even remotely challenged or being told his writings/opinions….and WaPo articles being ….well…..less than meritless.

The reaction seen is exactly like that of people with mental disorders when confronted with the evidence of those disorders….they absolutely reject any notion of being disturbed (mentally disturbed. by means of some mental disorder).

Bump among other gross displays of patent bias and false information being peddled by the WaPo is why it has earned the nickname and status of……the Compost.

Once we all accept that notion and just ignore the drivel being proffered by the Compost the better we all will be.

To engage people like Bump is a Fool’s Errand pure and simple…..it accomplishes nothing in trying to convince or prove to them the error of their ways…..just like any Dementia sufferer.

    1. “The reaction seen is exactly like that of people with mental disorders when confronted with the evidence of those disorders….they absolutely reject any notion of being disturbed (mentally disturbed. by means of some mental disorder).”

I call it sticking their fingers in their ears and yelling “Lalalalalalalala”

Gigi is the best at it, but it’s a lefty affliction for sure. You see it on college campuses almost daily.

  9. If Bump’s insistence on the truth of his statements has influenced ANYONE to take action based on Bump’s statements, how is that different from claiming that Trump’s comments ‘inspired’ a response from zealots??

    1. Anon, nobody is suggesting Bump knowingly induced crime, and no, Trump didn’t intend to start an insurrection.

  10. Bump: “you refuse to listen to what I’m saying to you.”

That is textbook projection and a defense mechanism — one used by all intellectual bullies.

Translated, it means: Stop asking questions. Stop challenging me. Blindly accept and obey. That’s what it means to “listen” to me.

  11. Question Turley…………Have you ever watched the “news” network that pays you?

    1. Which story did they get wrong? Hunter? No. Russia collusion? No. Nordstream pipeline? No. Trump lost? No. Please explain, without saying something like “Trust Me”.

      1. GWU
If you are waiting for Fishlips to say anythinng intelligent, or add anything to this blog other than baiting, don’t hold your breath.

        1. The point being is, Turley pointing out mistakes in other news outlets and not even concerned when the network he gets paid by paid out over 700,000 million dollars because of their willfully lying to their own viewers is the point, and quit being stupid, it’s not a contest.

          1. “quit being stupid, it’s not a contest.”

Trust me, i would concede that one to ya.

We can whataboutism all day. Nick Sandmann comes to mind, among many others.

            1. Good catch.

Fishbreath confuses the amount of money his employer, George Soros, invests in destabilizing the Western World. Given his minimalist vocabulary, simpleton sentence structure and low IQ, it would be a fair wager to surmise he is a bottom dwelling type that likes to be petted

  12. “It appears that, if ‘Democracy dies in darkness,’ journalism more often dies in the light of day.”

Actually, “journalism” was strangled to death by “journalists” as it choked and kicked with crowds of people standing around and watching, not really interested because “journalism” as it exists SHOULD have died decades ago, and the disreputable clowns that call themselves “journalists” should have had to go out and get USEFUL jobs, like selling shoes or canning tuna or baking bread instead of going to “journalism” school in order to perpetrate shabby frauds on a gullible public as the postmoodern medicine-show hucksters that they are.

  13. don’t really care about the press. I care that the DOJ and FBI are 100% Corrupt!

    1. Don’t you see? If you want to continue your corruption and prevent an actual, warranted insurrection with massive public support that would end that corruption, you need an army of people needing to confirm their biases. Bump and the wapo, et al sate the true believers with the lies and misdirection that confirm the biases.

  14. A prime example of why two things never happen, the Democrats will never give an interview with any reporter or media outlet that will actually use the dreaded follow-up question and the Democrats do not want to debate.

As for the dreaded follow-up question it is easy to claim something is “debunked” when all they really do is announce their conclusion, but when the dreaded follow-up question occurs they actually need something a non-partisan might call EVIDENCE. Bump is just claiming he debunked these issues by simply opining on them, never really giving any evidence of these items not being true.

This Bump character seems like a perfect microcosm of today’s “journalists”, he decrees his opinion, mocks those that disagree, yells at those daring to question him and then scoots out the door rather than engage.

Philip Bump is the perfect WAPO “reporter”, he spouts the company line, he gets backed up by the company, he hides in darkness and he is wrong about all the issues he writes about.

    1. “Debunked” has been a favorite tool of the left for years now. The word should be banned from journalism. Individuals use it as one of their several tools to shut down debate, when they don’t have a legitimate argument. Just look at how many times Gigi has used it on this very forum. If that doesn’t prove it indicates a lack of intellect and a viable defense, nothing does.

In fact, maybe Trump should just use that as his defense…”That’s all been debunked”. Case closed.

      1. And in the owrds of olly, we’ll soon see this ignorant post swept out with the rest of your garbage, leaving only the ridicule of you behind. But, you seem to like that.

tell you what, bug boy, you go find all the videos you can of Trump saying the word “debunked” and I’ll go find videos of hilary saying it. We all know how that goes, delusional one.

        1. In fact, why don’t you tell the class who used the word “debunked” at the Trump/Clinton debate?

We can leave it at that if you don’t want to look more like a fool.

        2. …leaving only the ridicule of you behind.

Tom, just remember, if your comments are in a thread where they get scrubbed, your comments go as well.

          1. Olly

You might want to look up and see that is not necessarily true. Note that the very comment you quoted is still here, as are other responses of mine to that idiot.

What i really like is when he calls me a troll. Truly rich.

  15. I always liked the “We report, you decide” principle of reporting. I find the Biden corruption “lack of evidence” similar to the election irregularities “lack of evidence”. Arizona provides a perfect example of the lengths that the legal system will go to avoid actually looking at the problem. There are real problems here, and declaring them “debunked” is not addressing them.
