“You Don’t Listen to the Press . . . I’m Telling You”: Post Columnist Philip Bump Strikes Out at Those Questioning Prior False Claims

I recently wrote how the Washington Post issued a statement that declared that the newspaper was “standing by” columnist Philip Bump on his proven false claims on subjects ranging from Lafayette Park to Russian collusion. Bump’s prior claims have not only been conclusively shown to be false but other major media outlets have now rejected those claims. However, the Post claimed this week that they are in fact true in response to one of my earlier columns.

Now, Miranda Devine at the New York Post has written about a meltdown by Bump in a podcast interview with Noam Dworman, owner of New York’s own Comedy Cellar. Dworman had asked Bump to explain some of his claims and Bump offered one of the most vivid examples of the new media and it is chilling. After declaring that “I’m gonna lose my mind,” he stormed out of the interview after refusing to address the contradictions and dubious claims in his prior columns.

Dworman’s podcast interview stands as one of the most revealing and vivid examples of how the media has changed in the age of rage.  Bump moves quickly from the conversational to crazed when simply asked about the basis for his claims in the Washington Post.

Dworman was asking about the mounting evidence and contradictions in the Biden corruption scandal. Some of us have said that there is evidence of obvious corruption and influence peddling, but more investigation is needed to establish any basis for impeachment or criminal charges involving President Biden.  Bump, however, will have none of it. The Post writer (who demanded investigations of a wide array of Republicans on false stories with little evidence) is vehement that there is nothing to see here . . . and the public just has to take his word for it.

Dworman remains polite and pushes Bump to simply engage him in explaining some of the countervailing evidence. Bump responds “I just I’m gonna lose my mind. I’m gonna lose my mind.”

As the interview shuts down, Dworman asks “is there nothing we can talk about … half the country believes this stuff.”

Bump: “I know, because half the country doesn’t actually dig into the issues.”

Dworman: “Here’s your chance to disabuse people. They don’t read the Washington Post.”

Bump will have nothing of it as Dworman continues to try to get him to explain his controversial writings: “There’s just no point, because all you want to do is you want to have me here as the putative expert so that you can present me with things that have been debunked multiple times that I’ve written about.”

Dworman: “What’s been debunked?”

Bump: “These, these claims. I’ve written about this, this argument about his dad calling him. I’ve written about this. Did you read what I wrote?”

Dworman: “It’s not debunked. Neither of us were there.”

Bump: “Well, I debunked it in the standpoint that I’ve already addressed this and presented the counterarguments to it.”

Of course, Bump has been repeatedly shown to have pushed false claims and then refused to admit to his errors. Moreover, he has repeatedly been criticized for not honestly presenting the counterarguments.

Dworman makes another valiant effort: “I have two issues here. One is Joe Biden’s behavior and one is the issue of the press. The press actually bothers me more than Joe Biden.”

Bump, however, has all but left the building: “Because you don’t listen to the press. I’m sitting here and I’m telling you, you’re wrong about these things, and you don’t listen, and you continue to insist upon things that are, you know, parsing of language. And it’s just, it’s this is why I keep saying it’s silly.” He then says that he is leaving.

Dworman responded “Well, it’s a shame because this is a good conversation.”

Bump: “It’s not a good conversation, because you refuse to listen to what I’m saying to you. You asked me on to present evidence. I keep telling you.”

However, what he “keeps telling” Dworman and the public is to just accept his conclusions and not question his support and analysis.

Bump then walks out with a statement that captures perfectly the new media. He first attacks independent journalist Matt Taibbi and says that he has “an agenda.”

Dworman delivers a haymaker in response and states “You have no agenda.”

That is when Bump delivers his exit line that foreshadowed the Post statement on my column: “I do have an agenda … My agenda is to do my best to try and present accurate information to the public. And I have an institution behind me to hold me to account when I don’t do that, which I think is an important consideration.”

Indeed, the Post would then stand entirely behind Bump and claim that all of his false statements were true.  Even when other media have acknowledged that these claims were false, the Post insists that they remain true. Thus, the Post is now saying that the following are true despite findings by inspector generals and special counsels to the contrary: (1) Bill Barr did order the clearing of Lafayette Park for the Trump photo op, (2) Barr also lied when he denied the use of tear gas by federal personnel in Lafayette Park, (3) there was never any spying on the Trump campaign by the FBI, (4) Hunter Biden’s laptop was seeded with Russian disinformation, and (5) the Clinton campaign was not behind false Russian collusion claims. It is all now deemed true by the Post. It appears that, if “Democracy dies in darkness,” journalism more often dies in the light of day.

After all, the problem is not that they are false but that people just “don’t listen to the press. I’m sitting here and I’m telling you, you’re wrong about these things, and you don’t listen.”

Update: Bump later objected to the coverage as misleading and unreflective of the interview as a whole. In the interview, he states that the interview had gone longer than originally planned. I added this video version of the interview posted by Live From the Table to help viewers reach their own conclusions. Notably, around the 13 minute mark, Bump is asked about how the Ukrainians were supposed to take the involvement of Biden’s son on one of the most corrupt companies in the Ukraine and a company then under investigation for corruption. Bump admits that the “entire reason that Hunter Biden was on the Burisma board was absolutely too present the image of the Bidens being involved in Burisma.” Bump also admits that this was an influence peddling operation by Hunter and others, but insists that there is no basis to suggest that President Biden was part of the scheme.

  1. We finally have our answer. Matt Gaetz will be the POTUS from 2024 through 2032. What a time of rejoicing that will be. He is smarter than all liberals and is nearly as educated as George Will and can debate anyone out of their pants in 3 minutes. Here he is Jon!. Mark my words.

I submit that it is time to give Dennis McIntyre the pink slip.
Yesterday, he violated the civility rules by calling a commenter a racist. He did this without any basis or explanation.

He has subsequently been given opportunities to explain himself or retract his statement, but refuses to do so.

I and others have been sanctioned (and rightly so) for personal attacks and name calling. However, lets be honest. When i have called Dennis a liar, a coward, an imbecile, or a moron, i always endeavored to provide evidence (actually, he provided most of it himself). But which is worse, being called an idiot, with plenty of reason, or being called a racist for no reason at all??
Not to mention that he has been busted for plagiarizing the copyrighted intellectual property of others and using it here for monetary gain.

Surely this type of behavior cannot be tolerated here.

  3. Mock him if you will, but Philip Bump possesses the perfect combination of writing skills and business connections to write the testimonial I need to get my anti-aging elixir approved for peddling on Amazon. Anyone know his going rate?

  4. Jonathan: This must be your third column in your personal squabble with WP’s Philip Bump. What is it about Bump that sets your hair on fire? What I find remarkable is you cite an article in the NYPost by Miranda Devine that conveniently reinforces your claims against Bump. Rather than be distracted by the back and forth claims between you and Bump let’s address the more important issue. What caught my eye was Devine’s claims about the Biden family alleged “scandal”. The title of Devine’s piece is “Americans are getting wise to Joe Biden’s corruption–despite his media gatekeepers”. The title itself tells you all you need to know about how the NYPost treats the news. It’s all about sensational headlines with a lot of speculation, misinformation and innuendo but little in the way of facts.

Take this example from Devine’s piece: “Once people with eyes and common sense see the evidence about the influence-peddling racket operated by Joe’s son Hunter and brother to make millions of dollars from shady characters in China, Ukraine, Russia, Romania, etc., while Joe was vice president, it is impossible not to grasp the corrupt nature of that business and Joe’s role in it”. And: “You don’t need a bank statement with Joe’s name on it or a secret recording of the Big Guy shaking down some Ukranian oligarch to know what is going on”. Devine seems to think all you need to do is watch the “Godfather” movie to know the “Big Guy” is guilty.

I’m curious. Did you see any actual facts or “evidence” in Devine’s piece? I didn’t. Just unproven allegations and descriptions of “shady characters”. That’s not EVIDENCE. Now it’s pretty clear you share Devine’s view about the alleged Biden family “corruption scandal”.and why you are calling for a House impeachment inquiry. But where is the proof? Chairman Comer’s theory in search of crimes has resulted in a lot of hearings but no actual FACTS or EVIDENCE to prove Joe Biden was receiving payoffs or was involved in his son’s business dealings.

So where does that leave your call for Joe Biden impeachment? My “eyes and common sense” tell me neither you, Devine nor James Comer have proved a case against Joe Biden–enough to justify an impeachment inquiry. No bank statements and no “secret recordings”. Even if David Weiss decides to prosecute Hunter will that have any appreciable effect on the 2024 election? Hunter won’t be on the ballot. The contest will be between President Biden and, if it happens, DJT who is facing 4 criminal indictments and the possibility of at least one conviction. Will voters want to vote for a convicted felon who wanted to negate the legitimate votes of millions of American voters? I think you know the answer.

    1. Fascist Why did Ukranian Burisma Energy give $20,000,000.00 to eleven different Biden crime family members thru a series of international bank transfers that baknks dutifully filed Suspicious Activity Reports?

You support this thug, you have ZERO morals.

      1. The fact you think biden will be the democrat nominee, alone, proves what a lala land you live in.

        LMAO

Someone said your post will age like milk. I say more like a full diaper in the hot sun.

    2. “I’m curious. Did you see any actual facts or “evidence” in Devine’s piece? “

Are you blind. She has provided it continuously and linked you to some more. We understand. She didn’t link you to the Washington Post that lies in agreement with Bump. (Lies in bed and lies in agreement.)

Do you have a problem with the truth?

“Hunter won’t be on the ballot.”

His co-conspirator intends to be on the ballot.

I would vote for Trump even in jail, because the left is using justice as their play toy indicting ham sandwiches and giving them names of conservatives running for election.

I’d like a show of hands of anyone who believes what Dennis says.

      1. I’d like a show of hands of anyone who believes what Dennis says.

Bill Clinton introduced basketball to provide an activity for black kids to keep them out of legal trouble. Dennis provides ….um…hmmmm……I’m not sure what Dennis or any of the paid DNC trolls provide. However, his posts do keep male retirees breathlessly out of bed so that they can hammer Dennis. Alas their wives are angry because their husbands aren’t in bed hammering making love to them. You could call it a bromance: Dennis is their bro as he mances other limp men. IOW, there is Viagra for amorous men and then their is Dennis for old retirees.

          1. Or maybe those unmarried retirees are hammering your wife while you’re at work…just sayin’

    3. FACTS? You mean things like 170+ bank reports sent to the Treasury Dept.regarding suspected money laundering activity by Biden family members, including his granddaughters, with DOCUMENTED transfers of millions of dollars wired in from Ukraine, Romaine and China into holding companies set up by Biden family members? And the recent testimony from Hunter’s business partner, Devon Archer?

All of this has been revealed in House Subcommittee hearings. Just because the mainstream media refused to cover any of this doesn’t mean it didn’t happen in the real world; it just means that it didn’t happen in your world.

So when Miranda Devine says “You don’t need a bank statement with Joe’s name on it or a secret recording of the Big Guy shaking down some Ukranian oligarch to know what is going on”, she actually HAS the bank records and the sworn testimony of someone who participated in those secret phone calls.

As for old Joe not receiving any of this cash, his 2017 tax return shows several million $$ of income from a couple from ‘S’ corps, and no explanation has ever been ventured as to what those ‘S’ corps did or where that money came from.

Bottom line? If you really think that Joe Biden’s granddaughter had anything of value to offer a Romanian billionaire, aside from her grandfather’s influence…you should ask your doctor to adjust your medications accordingly.

    4. Dennis, when in doubt, ask your mommy for the truth.

Mom of 4 slams ‘oblivious’ AOC sharing inflation ‘propaganda’ clip — and ignoring how American families are struggling

A mother of four struggling to keep money in the bank accused lawmakers of being “oblivious” to how much high inflation is affecting families across the country.

    5. Dennis

If they do a proper prosecution of Hunter, Joe will be called as a witness, and you will get your wish, big mouth.
Under oath he will be forced to answer followup questions. He wont be able to brush them off with “thats a terrible question” or “where’s the money” or his favorite “thats been debunked”. He will be forced to answer if he is the big guy, so then you’ll know its not tony soprano. He will be forced to explain why hunter was copied on emails showing his scheduled call with ukraines president. He will be forced to explain why he lied and said his family made no money from china. He will be forced to explain why hunter rode air force 2 with him 16 times. He will be asked about amos hochstein. He will be asked why he lied about ever having met zlovchevsky. He will be asked why he claims he wanted shokin fired because he WAS NOT investigating the company paying hunter millions. He will be asked why he met with Devon Archer for 2-1/2 hours at the white house. He will be asked under oath if he ever benefitted in ANY WAY from Hunters earnings. He will be asked why Hunter claimed to have paid him half his salary. He will be asked if eric shwerin ever paid his bills from hunters accounts. He will be asked if has ever met tony bobulinski and what the purpose of that meeting was. He will be asked why he sent hunter a draft copy of the speech he made in ukraine. He will be asked if Archers statement to congress, that it was joe that hunter and zlovchevsky called from dubai, was true.

Miranda has cited the evidence before. If you’re really interested you can easily find her prior articles. But you’re not. No more than you’re interested in honest debate. Just plagiarized keyboard diarrhea.

    6. Dennis – why do you continue to say that there are no “actual facts” suggesting corruption of the Biden family? That horse left the stable a long time ago.
Sen. Grassley has bank records showing that Chinese entities delivered $5m to one of the Biden controlled entities. I quote from Grassley’s letter to the DOJ:
“Notably, my September 2020 report with Senator Johnson and our floor speeches from this year made public bank records and financial data that showed that Hunter Biden and James Biden profited from a $5 million wire from a company connected to CEFC in August of 2017, indicating that it could have been the money originally intended for SinoHawk. However, based on records, that money was not transmitted to the SinoHawk joint venture, rather it was transmitted to Hudson West III which could partially explain SinoHawk’s eventual failure. As noted in our report and our floor speeches, the money from the wire was transferred from Hudson West III to Hunter Biden’s firm, Owasco, and James Biden’s firm, Lion Hall Group, apparently circumventing SinoHawk.”
      https://www.grassley.senate.gov/news/news-releases/fbi-possesses-significant-impactful-voluminous-evidence-of-potential-criminality-in-biden-family-business-arrangements
In addition to the Chinese payments, we have the combined testimonies of Devon Archer and Tony Bobulinski that Burisma sought help “from DC”, through Hunter, in getting Victor Shokin off their backs. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12370729/Burisma-executives-used-amorphous-term-asking-Hunter-Biden-help-D-C-heat-constant-pressures-specific-reference-big-guy-Joe-Devon-Archer-testimony-reveals.html Hunter called his father, says Bobulinski. The VP later flew to Kyiv and got Shokin fired. Hunter was paid millions by Burisma. These dots are easy to connect.
We may not have confessions yet from the Bidens, but we have ample “evidence” to begin an impeachment proceeding. Anything less would be a dereliction of duty.

  5. After listening to the podcast, for me the tell regarding Mr Bump and his lack of truthfulness was that although he repeatedly billed himself as the expert on all things related to Hunter Biden’s business, he conveniently didn’t know when Joe Biden attended dinner with Hunter’s known-to-be-corrupt Burisma business partners. This was March 2015 approximately coincidental to the start of the Obama administration deciding that the prosecutor was corrupt and needed to be removed. But this does not fit with his “nothing to see” theory so he feigns ignorance hoping to slide by.

What is particularly interesting to hear is that Mr. Bump continually attempts to keep Joe Biden out of the narrative when in fact that is the story to be investigated. It is also telling regarding Mr. Bump’s mind set is that unless one buys into his story he claims that you haven’t listened. He clearly is not objective if that is how one assesses listening to ones arguments.

    1. Arnold

Well said. Just like the dweebs here, who keep wanting to make this about Hunter. Dennis does it again today, not surprisingly. “Hunter’s not on the ballot”. No sh!t sherlock. My guess is, joe wont be either.

  6. Court Jester

This clown is as bizarre and just plain wrong as the equivocating deceivers who claim that hurricanes and summer heat are only recently “climate crises” and anthropogenic phenomena.

Now you know why the Founders severely restricted the vote in 1789, to try to show future Americans the correct path of this and all other republics – the path of the severely restricted vote.

You don’t listen to defective dependents, parasites, equivocators, propagandists and despots.

  7. Mr Turley is man who has always had his eyes wide open to the truth

and now, in this darkness, those eyes have a renewed meaning

    thank you Prof

  8. I listened to the whole interview. It was over an hour long. Noam was well prepared. I also thought Bump made one or two valid points.

But what struck me was how emotional Bump is. Not at all a dispassionate neutral reciter of facts.

Bump did himself no good. Being so emotional in defending Biden makes me think he can not be trusted to be a fair and neutral “reporter”. He’s going to be prone to cherry picking facts and framing them based on a story he wants to tell – which is exactly what he accused Noam of doing.

  9. In addition to being an Ace WaPo reporter, Bump is also an expert rock climber. Here he is climbing the north face .. .

  10. It is time to bypass the employees of the Washington Post and ask Jeff Bezos to explain.

  11. Hoplw would we define an attorney who is outraged by a French law requiring schoolchildren to conform to a dress code but has nothing to say about a man who is sentenced to 17 years hard time for walking peacefully through the Capitol after having been ushered in by police, whose shaking of the fence, briefly, earned him a terrorist enhancement? We would define that attorney as a hypocrite, an immoral and amoral person, and a charlatan.

  12. Imagine one media company having Philip Bump, Taylor Lorenz and Jennifer Rubin on the payroll. Looks like Bezos is spending a little too much time on his yacht.

Taylor Lorenz is a scold pretending to be a young tech watcher when instead she is a screaming Covid fascist the demands we all mask up while she flits from party to party maskless. Her latest foray being at Kathy Griffin’s “salon” ( her term for luncheon) with the like of Rosie O’Donnell and Dylan Mulvaney.

Rubin is a so-called conservative who supports Biden over any Republican because…Trump or something.

Bump is WAPO’s version of the Japanese warrior on an island in 1974 still fighting WWII. Very few partisan hacks are still claiming Trump-Russian collusion (which under today’s standards is criminal) or that the laptop is Russian. It is only fitting that he ran screaming from the podcast due to the DREADED FOLLOW-UP QUESTION. Democrats cannot handle a follow-up question. Please have someone ask KJP a follow up.

Anyone that pays for the WAPO or the NY Times is either a partisan Democrat or a pretentious New York or DC fool.

    1. Bezos spends so much time on his yacht because the WaComPost employs Bump, Lorenz, and Rubin.

  13. ” Consider the latest wacky revelations on the nom de crook. In response to a Freedom of Information Act request, the National Archives admitted there are 5,400 emails Biden apparently sent under fake names including robinware456 at gmail com, JRBWare at gmail com and Robert.L.Peters at pci gov. ”

The national archives have been fighting the release, of course !
I hear there are more emails and the national archives won’t be releasing thousands of them.
Then there’s the redacting, of course !

” A few of those emails have trickled out from other sources, revealing messages tied to Hunter Biden’s Ukraine hustle. But the Archives is refusing to reveal thousands of other messages despite disclosure demands from the House Oversight Committee. ”

    1. Shakdi,

You might not be aware, but it seems the wordpress system counts email addresses as hyperlinks when it comes to the number of permitted links in a comment. I edited those email addresses so that the comment would be visible.

  15. you want to have me here as the putative expert

Well, there’s the problem right there. You’re not an expert. You’re a journalist. Just as a communist is somebody who has nothing, and wants to share it with the world, a journalist is somebody who understands nothing, and is tasked with keeping the world informed about it.

  16. “But don’t worry, unlike pop, I won’t make you give me half your salary.” Hunter Biden

Bump: “I have no idea what that means. I don’t know what that means. I have nothing to say about it.”

    A demoncrat analyzing evidence.

  17. I’m glad we keep sending the whiny likes of Bump the fire they deserve for their shamelessness and cowardice, and it’s why 1A is the cornerstone other countries don’t have (and why totalitarians unceasingly work to destroy it), followed by 2A, but if this is a surprise to anyone in 2023, particularly from the likes of the Washington Whatever-the-**** – come on. He may as well be wearing an armband at this point, he’s p*ssed that doesn’t impress or intimidate anyone, and to be fair and honest, the left is so far, far the more egregious of American political parties in 2023 it can’t be calculated with numbers or math. That would break the universe.

What a peon, and paying money for that paper is pretty much like pe*-pe*ing on a fire at this point; an instant indicator of low IQ, even if wealth and connection bought an Ivy League education reciept. The media is dead. Dead, I tell you. Trust them as far as you can throw them with a pinkie finger, on both sides. Even the conservative press, with exceptions is now doing propaganda depending upon whether or not they support Trump or Desantis – let’s throw ALL of them on the fire. Your own two eyes and the brain you were born with, if you care to use it, are all you need. If we all end up living in teepees or in camps, no one can say they were not warned repeatedly and ad nauseam, for years and years.

  18. I no longer consider the Washington Post to be a credible source when it comes to politics. The Post does advocacy journalism, they spin Democratic narratives while simultaneously coveing up the corruption of the Democrats – like MSNBC or CNN do. Not as bad as those outlets, but still pretty bad. I believe newspaper political reporters should be non-partisan, they should tell both sides of the story – the GOP has proved the Biden family is engaging in corruption, the Biden’s monetized Joe Biden’s name, that’s corruption, weather it is “legal” or not. I think the Post many years ago would have exposed this corruption, but today they have all these “woke” partisan journslists who believe the GOP is the evil empire. The “woke” journalist told us – for years – Trump colluded with the Russians, that was complete nonsense, I never beleived it for one minute. Carl Bernstein, I should mention, was on MSNBC and CNN all the time claiming the Russian collusion story was “real”, a bigger corruption scandal that Watergate )Woodward, in contrast, sasid he cpould find nothing that supported the Russian collusion theroy). The cable news networks only put Berstein on the tube because he backed up the phony Russian collusion narrative – by this time Bernstein was old, washed up, he hadn’t been a hot commodity for years – so he was able to get on TV by paroting this Russian collusion nonsense. That was sad to see. A key reason I lost all respect for the POST is they actually believed this chronic liar Adam Schiff – any news outlet that would believe anything Schiff says it not credible, in my view. Schiff is soemthing out of a comic book, a partsian hack like I have never seen.
