Are Rep. Tlaib, the New York Times, and Other Media Guilty of Disinformation on the Hospital “Strike”?

The NY Times Should Answer for Some of These Photo Choices
The New York Times and Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D., Mich.) have long denounced disinformation on social media and called for censorship of those spreading false information. They and various other media outlets now find themselves accused of immediately spreading false images and accounts of the recent explosion at the hospital in Gaza. The NYT picture above is not even the hospital and the Biden Administration has concluded it was not only a Palestinian missile in the incident but it struck the parking lot rather than the hospital itself. While there is still debate over the origin of the missile that struck the hospital, United States intelligence and the Biden Administration have concluded that it was not an Israeli missile but a Palestinian missile. I am open to evidence on either side and investigations continue., However, it was not (and has not been) established that this was an Israeli missile.

Moreover, the missile did not destroy the hospital but appears to have landed in the parking lot. Finally, the actual death toll remains in dispute.

While the caption on the photo above acknowledged that it is not the picture of the hospital, it created a powerful image with the headline. The more important question is why the New York Times would simply repeat the accusation from Hamas on the origin of the missile when there are thousands of missiles going back and forth between Israel and Gaza.

The New York Times not only immediately declared Israel as the source but said that hundreds were killed. The BBC completed an investigation with the assistance of experts, who said that the evidence was not consistent with an Israeli missile strike and further suggested that the death toll was lower than widely reported.

Likewise, Foreign Policy magazine is still showing a misleading picture of a huge crater that turns out to be from an entirely different location. Actual drone footage does not show the type of large crater that would have been left by an Israeli missile in the parking lot.  The Wall Street Journal showed this crater in the parking lot:While the New York Times can claim that it later covered the countervailing findings of Israeli and American intelligence, that is not the case with Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D., Mich.). Last night, after the Biden Administration released its own findings that the missile came from Palestine, Tlaib led a mass protest while denouncing Israel for the strike:
“People think it’s okay to bomb a hospital where children, you know, what’s so hard sometimes is watching those videos and and the people telling the kids, ‘Don’t cry.’ And like, let them cry!”And they’re shaking [INAUDIBLE] they keep telling them not to cry in Arabic. And they can cry, I can cry, we all can cry. If we’re not crying, something is wrong! And so I’m telling you right now, President Biden, not all of America’s with you on this one. And you need to wake up and understand that! We are literally watching people commit your genocide and killing a vast majority just like this. And we still stand by and say nothing. We will remember this. But all of you, you need to know, I swear to God [INAUDIBLE] You are on the right side of history! You are! You’re doing everything possible to save lives! What is wrong with that? Stop it!”

Tlaib wrote on social media that “Israel just bombed the Baptist Hospital killing 500 Palestinians (doctors, children, patients) just like that” on X.

She later refused to apologize for repeating the claim viewed as false by the Biden Administration and others. What is striking about Tlaib’s protest speech is that she is denouncing the loss of First Amendment rights in this controversy in making these claims.I have repeatedly said that I oppose censorship of those who are making these claims. That will come as no surprise to regulars on this blog. However, Tlaib has not been a voice for free speech. While objecting to the censorship of Palestinians, Tlaib has supported the push of Democrats to get greater levels of “content moderation” on social media. Tlaib cut off Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg when he tried to defend policies to minimize censorship as protecting “hate speech.”Likewise, the New York Times has been unrelenting in attacks on Elon Musk and Twitter for restoring free speech protections on X and supporting broader censorship of disinformation, misinformation, and malinformation.

Of course, NY Times, Tlaib, and others can count on the free speech community will continue to support their own ability to speak even when they are accused of spreading disinformation.

This controversy shows, again, how selective the media has been in its calls for bans and censorship. That includes various journalistic and scientific figures banned for expressing skepticism over pandemic claims from the origins of the virus to the efficacy of certain treatments. For example, when many people raised the possibility that the virus may have been released from the nearby Chinese virology lab (rather than the “wet market” theory), they were denounced as virtually a lunatic fringe. Even objections to the bias of authors of a report dismissing the lab theory were ridiculed. The New York Times reporter covering the area called it “racist” and implausible.  Now, even W.H.O. admits that the lab theory is possible and Biden officials are admitting that it is indeed plausible.

Fortunately for the reporters of the New York Times and Democratic members like Tlaib, free speech values should protect their right to continue to post these views despite their truth or veracity. One can only hope that they might want to consider showing others the same consideration.

    1. There was no insurrection. People went into the Cannon Building (not the Capitol), went through the security checkpoints, protested peacefully, and were arrested.

        1. The FBI needs to go after every single one of these insurrectionists, their families and their employers. Next they all need to be sent to jail for at least ten years.

  1. Recent comments regarding HAMAS notwithstanding, the essence of what we are seeing globally is a worldwide Jihad being enabled by Islamists of all stripe, be they Sunni, Shiite, Salafi, Wahabi, or any other subset one can mention. Geopolitical events of the past several decades have resulted in mass migrations of individuals whose cultural and religious philosophies embrace the aforementioned. They have insinuated themselves into societies both foreign and domestic even to the halls of Congress where they have found representation by individuals who espouse hate and divisiveness, without censure whatsoever. These migrants seek to remain aloof, within their own ‘ghettos’, with no interest in the assimilation which was the motivation of the great migrations from Western Europe in the 19th and 20th Centuries which brought a common Judeo-Christian ethic with them, shared by their predecessors. We see this in countries such as France, Belgium, German, and the USA as examples. These ‘Jihadists’ eschew any idea of submitting to anything other than Islam and have been known to have lobbied to have Sharia law decide matters within their locales. This ethic, completely contrary to our Western societies and cultures, is exerting itself in the 21st Century. The philosophy, intent and goal of Islam subsuming and converting or, if not, eliminating all non-believers[infidels] is key. In the effort to achieve these ends they slaughter innocents, demonstrating a debased moral compass and moral and ethical turpitude which they state that their faith justifies. In this, the JCPOA endeavors to enable them with the most fearful device yet conceived by science. There isn’t anything the Biden administration or its predecessors from the dawn of the 21st century have undertaken to effectively counteract this movement. Consider that the President of Egypt publicly stated that the Palestinians are incompatible with Egypt’s culture, Egypt doesn’t want them in their midst, Alarms should go office in the Oval Office and the Upper and Lower Chambers of Congress. But NO!! We keep feeding this ‘beast’ in a host of different ways, expecting it to be satiated while ignoring the fact that a dog will continue to eat to its death if continually fed. Time to wake up and smell the coffee!!

  2. Professor Turley,,

What, exactly, did NYT say that was false?

The caption for the photo refers to a city in the South (not the location of the hospital).
The title does not say that Israel was responsible. It clarified, “Palestinians say.” Because it could not independently verify the claim. This is akin to Fox News arguing that reporting on Trump’s election lies is “newsworthy” because it is the President’s perspective, however erroneous. Same thing re: Gaza hospital.

Given the siege, there are very few resources available to verify claims. Within two hours of Israel’s rebuttal, NYT changed the title.

Literally nothing you pointed out was factually incorrect. You should attack Al Jazeera as they have yet to report the events correctly. NYT actually had an article this morning recounting all of this.

    1. In fact, the only false statement in any of this is yours. You stated, “The New York Times not only immediately declared Israel as the source but said that hundreds were killed.” This is CLEARLY FALSE.

You, sir, are spreading disinformation about NYT with such a statement. Do you really not know the difference between the above statement, and “Breaking News: An Israeli airstrike his a Gaza hospital on Tuesday, killing at least 200 Palestinians, ACCORDING TO THE PALESTINIAN HEALTH MINISTRY”? Or, do you feign ignorance to spread misinformation about the NYT, your employer’s competitor?

    2. The title does not say that Israel was responsible. It clarified, “Palestinians say.

The Steele dossier was news fodder for years, yet never did anyone say it was factual.
The Hunter Biden Laptop was deep sixed by all the media, and yet today some say its not real.

Yet when a terrorist cabal decapitates infants and burns entire families, alive in their homes, NYT find the credible.

Its just the double standard, that has become the Standard for the Main stream media.

The question is why did the NYT run a story lacking any corroboration? Why did the NYT take the word of a terrorist organization, the requires massive amounts of propaganda to advance their cause of killing all the Jews and Eliminating the Jewish State? “From river to sea” is their mantra.
Why not believe Hamas when the tell us all exactly who they are?

ps, your attempted justification of the acts of these evil organisms, is disgusting.

  3. No need to ask about the NYT. They have a long record to rely on including covering up the Holocaust, covering up the Stalin mass murder in the Ukraine, the undermining of the US in foreign policy from Vietnam to the Soviet Union in the 1980s. And they are no different from Al Jazeera in their coverage of Israel. Some 20 years ago, they revealed the details of the SWIFT program that was created to prevent the financing of terrorism because they believed their readers had a ‘right to know”. If I recall correctly even the egregious Pelosi tried to convince them not to publish. The NYT is literally a terror supporting propaganda outlet that is devoid of any morality. It is despicable. I subscribed to that newspaper throughout the 1980s and 1990s and would now I would not even use its plastic delivery bag to insert the deposits of my dog! Evil is the word for those people.

    1. The NYT “revealed the details of the SWIFT program . . .”

If only they were so vigilant about revealing the details of Iran’s ideological, financial, and military support for Hamas and Hezbollah terrorists. The world would be a much safer place.

  4. Mean while back at the ranch

President Dementia, was informed the Hospital strike,(hospital parking lot strike) was an errant hamas missile, offered advice that Hamas has to learn to shoot straight in order to maximize dead Jews.

  5. Tried as we might, more and more of us objective, anti-Rep / anti-Dems registered voters are concluding there is no stopping this train wreck of a nation so helplessly bent on self-destruction. OTOH, that means Congress can no longer meet, the MSM will no longer exist to stoke hatred and incite violence, and the trolls, God love them, will be left to fend for themselves if they hope to survive.

Perhaps this is a call for a celebratory dance

  6. Actually a very good article was done by the BBC online which showed the actual parking lot that was hit, not the hospital. There was a small mark on the concrete of the parking lot which was shown also by the BBC and it was so small that it was almost impossible to see. The BBC then consulted multiple experts who gave them their considered opinion that this was not a bomb strike but more likely a missile and there was little blast damage but more burned out cars surrounding the area of the “incident”. Their general conclusion was that this was a missile misfire with a wide area of fire likely caused by the missile fuel. Since the missile traveled such a short distance, it was basically full of fuel. This is often characteristic of missile strikes such as when ships have been hit with a certain amount of blast damage and then intense fires from the rocket fuel. This was apparent in the Falklands war when several British ships were hit by missiles. The HMS Sheffield was lost to fire and not blast effect since the Exocet missile failed to explode. Most of the wounded or dead were from smoke inhalation and burns and not blast effects. Many accounts suggested it was the missile fuel that was the accelerant.
This mimics WW2 when much of the damage was fire from kamikaze planes loaded with fuel and one bomb. Especially when larger ships were struck like Essex Class carriers. Smaller destroyers usually in the range of 2000-2500 tons however could be sunk by the impact damage of the suicide plans although one destroyer survived between 7-10 suicide hits.
There is obvious data and history out there to use as a reference for events such as this. Too bad almost no one bothers to look.
BBC might be left wing but their work here was excellent

    1. GEB, thanks for the summary. It is unfortunate that Biden can’t call out the Hamas lies for what they are and instead gifts them $100m of borrowed money.

  7. If communists took over the United States, they would not need seize control of the NY Times or most other so-called news outlets.

  8. The amount of disinformation about the hospital strike is massive, and coming from all sides. The truth is going to be one of two options, and no amount of disinformation or lying now will change what actually happened. It is best to ignore all of it and wait for actual verified facts to emerge. Doing anything else is a waste of time.

    1. it’s cute how you upvote your own comments, much like Ralph de Millennial did. Troll harder cupcake.

  9. When asked about Tlaib’s statement Minority Leader Jeffries stated, “I haven’t heard or read it” and Pelosi said the same. They need to be asked this question every time they pop their heads out of their Democrat tent.

Tlaib is getting people hurt, she is causing untold damage to THE UNITED STATES all around the Globe. This congresswoman is an enemy of the state and she needs to be censored if not expelled. Frankly I would expel her for treasonous actions taken in support of our enemy. We have designated Hamas as a terrorist group and therefore they are an enemy of the US and she is furthering their agenda.

Again, ask Jeffries what he thinks about Rashida’s comments and keep asking him every darn day. Ask KJP the same, make her repudiate this loathsome person from the WH.

  10. Commenters here were quick to support the Hamas narrative. I pointed out Israel was quick to deny any strikes even close to those coordinates, and none of their missiles had missed their assigned targets. Yet the commenters here on this site, believed Hamas, even after evidence started to validate the facts Israel cited. These are same commenters that justified the decapitation of infants and burning alive in their homes entire families.

    1. Have you seen any evidence of decapitation of infants? Talk about misinformation. Israel lies about civilian deaths, the US lies (weapons of mass destruction), Hamas lies, BTW it wasn’t a Hamas missle but another groups that struck the hospital area. Every protest by Palestenians are portrayed as Hamas supporters including the protest including many Jewish people at the Capitol.

        1. I’ve seen reports that were later walked back. I’ve heard stories about 40 decapitated babies. Yet I’ve seen no proof except people repeating what they heard somewhere else. What you are reporting has a legal term called hearsay. Is that proof?

          1. Actually, hearsay is sometimes admissible. In any event most of what we hear and read is hearsay. That doesn’t make it untrue, just not usually admissible in court.

            1. This is your claim of proof? It might be true because sometimes what you hear is true? In this case there would be documentation if true, pictures and videos. Many of the first claims said they existed but now they don’t. You must want people to lie to you.

      1. I wasn’t there when the camps liberated in 1945 either, but I believe the nazis were exterminating people. I feel it’s a safe bet that hammas commuted atrocities.

      2. ” Israel lies about civilian deaths,”

Israel’s reporting of this type of information might be the best in the world. Many times after Israel is slandered and they have time to reconstruct events Israel is proven right. Because of this unfounded hatred , demonstrated by your libelous remark, Israel uses a lot of cameras in all operations. You should check your own sources, Enigma, since you have been proven more times to be wrong than right.

“BTW it wasn’t a Hamas missle but another groups that struck the hospital area. “

What other group is firing off missiles in Gaza? If you can’t provide proof then one must assume it is another of your fairytales.

  11. President Trump has been indicted more times then Carter has liver pills for nothing. Surely the fed can break away from mom’s for educating their kids to check this critter out?

  12. That isn’t even up for debate, they are prog/left democrats and their propaganda arm – of course they lie.

  13. Send Tlaib back to the dung hole she can from. I just can’t wait to celebrate more diversity. These people hate this country and want to turn it into the crap hole they came from.

    1. She represents a district that has a high number of Muslims.
Same for the ilk in MN. But in MN she’s got a Muslim challenger for her seat in 2024

  14. “The NYT picture above is not even the hospital . . .”

    No comment necessary.

    “. . . according to the Palestinian Health Ministry . . .” (the NYT)

The PHM is the propaganda outlet for Hamas terrorists (and by extension, for Iran).

At what point do decent people conclude the obvious: The NYT is not a news organization. It is a propaganda rag.

    1. I stopped reading it a few years ago. Its only use now is to get the latest party line.

    2. People with a free mind, know that. Those who have surrendered their brains to the progs will never know, nor will they care. Oblivion and free stuff is all that matters. That and their sanctimonious self-righteousness.

      1. I cancelled my subscription to Time magazine around 1977 or 1978 when they printed “Begin (rhymes with Fagin)”. The grandchildren of those Time-Life employees work for the NYT today.

    3. “Dominion Voting Systems sued Fox for $1.6 billion, claiming the news outlet repeatedly aired allegations that the company’s voting machines were rigged against Trump in 2020 while knowing the accusations were untrue. Fox contended that it was reporting newsworthy charges made by supporters of the Republican president.”

      https://apnews.com/article/fox-news-dominion-lawsuit-trial-explainer-trump-fbd401a951905879d837a8860b3bec5e

How do you distinguish the two?

For me, the difference is that reporters cannot actually get into Gaza to factcheck accusations made by an interested party. No issue, on that front, re: Trump’s election lies.

Do you similarly think that Fox is a propaganda outlet for MAGA?

      1. “Do you similarly think that Fox is a propaganda outlet for MAGA?”

        Yes, no, maybe.

Whatever my reply, it’s irrelevant to my argument. (But, then, you already knew that.) And your deflection (yet again) is disgusting.

        1. No, it is central to your argument.

Your comment: “The PHM is the propaganda outlet for Hamas terrorists (and by extension, for Iran)” because it reported that PHM’s claims regarding the event.

Fox parrots claims from conservative politicians/organizations, even when it KNOWS the claims are false. And it justifies this by stating that their perspectives are newsworthy.

If you are fine with the latter, then you must be fine with the former, especially considering NYT would have no way of knowing the falsity of the claim, given the uncertainty of the claims made by the PHM due the lack of ability to independently factcheck what actually happened in Gaza.

What part of this is too difficult to understand?

          1. “No, it is central to your argument.”

            No. It’s ad hominem.

And I have no desire to waste my time by explaining it to you.

  15. Tlaib is a hard in-the-paint committed supporter of Hamas. Her hatred of Israel, and by extension the United States, is absolute. When the Mullahs in Iran shout death to Israel and death to America as they have for many years, their girl stands in front of her House Office with a Palestinian flag. Pretty much tells you everything you need to know about Ms. Tlaib.

  16. “We are literally watching people commit your genocide and killing a vast majority just like this.” (the America hating, Hamas loving Tlaib)

That is the same tissue of lies told for years that triggered and rationalized the “summer of love.” When you spread such lies, you are morally responsible for the violence they unleash.

  17. Lock them up! They are anarchists, neo Marxists, and traitors and they should be prosecuted to a greater degree than anyone related to the January 6th incidents…
    How bout that payback🧐
