According to the study by the Institute of Labor Economics, the overturning of Roe v. Wade in June 2022 may have resulted in the birth of 32,000 additional babies. After the decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization births rose by an average of 2.3 percent in states enforcing abortion bans or restrictions. That may be less than many pro-choice advocates suggested, but it still amounts to tens of thousands of babies.
It is not clear how other factors may have affected this increase from increased immigration across the Southern border to changing economic conditions. Even before Dobbs, the rate of abortion had been falling steadily in the United States.
Roughly a quarter of women of reproductive age face increased driving distances due to states with bans on abortion.
Overall, the increase for women in that age bracket went up roughly three percent.
In a related story,Carson City District Court Judge James Russell has ruled against putting a constitutional amendment on the ballot for 2024 to make abortion a constitutional right. In his opinion, Judge Russell found that the amendment violated the “single subject rule” by including various issues beyond abortion:
“This Court agrees with Plaintiffs that the Petition embraces a multitude of subjects that amount to logrolling,” Russell wrote. “Subsection 1, alone, embraces the following subjects: prenatal care, childbirth, postpartum care, birth control, vasectomy, tubal ligation, abortion, abortion care, management of a miscarriage, and infertility care … Thus, it is improper to characterize these broad categories as a ‘single subject’ because there is no explanation as to how these provisions are functionally related.”

The Justices in the majority did not take a position on what regulations (if any) should be placed on abortion. They only took a position on whether the federal Constitution governs the issue (they said it doesn’t, which is consistent with the actual words of the Constitution).
It would be helpful if some of the Republicans in the House and Senate (or even Ronna Romney McDaniels and/or her sponsor Trump) would be helpful in explaining to Republican voters why they don’t take exactly that position: elective birth control abortions are not a federal issue which EITHER party can pass federal laws either restricting elective birth control abortions or allowing them up to the moment of birth. Doctors alone shouldn’t make the choice because in many areas of the nation, church affiliated hospitals have a monopoly on hospital care. A woman living in such an area has to drive hours to reach a non-religious hospital. Driving hours to a hospital can make bacterial infections lethal to the mother or other complications.
Surgery requires a “team” of medical professionals. In some states, this surgery team must gain approval by the hospital’s attorneys (Legal Dept) to treat women in urgent medical distress. Simply delaying urgent medical treatment can be lethal to the mother. The entire surgery team won’t risk criminal penalty or revoking medical licenses if the attorneys say no.
That’s why Republicans keep losing elections – petty politicians shouldn’t be involved in these choices!

If you actually look at the study that Turley references, you will probably be a lot more than just dubious. If you even don’t get any further than the summary at the top of the published study, you just might start by going ‘WTF’ when the three authors of the study claim Dobbs resulted in TOTAL bans on abortion.
If you want to waste more hours of your life than I should at my age by reading that ‘study’ with your university stats courses in mind, you’ll notice that how now data testing is ever mentioned.
Nor is there any question of whether the greater number of births since Dobbs might be because Bribery Biden started importing Illegal Aliens into the country on steroids immediately before the Dobbs decision. So Texas abortion restrictions on elective birth control abortions based on time periods are found to be the root cause of a 5.1% estimated increase in births in Texas (p. 12). The reason some states are passing restrictive abortion is laws is because the lawmakers don’t believe it is ethical to murder the unborn. If you make it harder to get an abortion, there will be fewer abortions. If you make it easier to get an abortion you will see more abortions. In other states lawmakers are enthusiastic supporters of the murder of unborn, but only because being pro-choice is a proven vote getter in some geographical regions. If you compare the two positions, Republicans wanting to make it more difficult to get an abortion, even outlaw the practice, for moral reasons – because they believe it is a barbaric practice (which it is), with the Democrats reasons for championing abortion (abortion gets our party more votes on election day), you can only conclude the Republicans are “right” on the issue, in my view. The GOP takes a stand you can admire – murder of the unborn is wrong. So when I read Professor Turleys story – that 30,000 kids escape getting aborted because of the Dobb’s decision, it made my day. I think some of the justices who voted to overturn Roe did so because had they not voted the way they did more kids would die needlessly. If I was a SCOTUS Judge that’s the way I would have voted. My thinking would be ” I am not going to use my vote on the court to put more kids to death.” I think Coney Barrett voted to overturn Roe for that reason – to save the lives of the unborn. All the Judges that voted to overturn Roe are heroes of mine!
Behind of all that meandering: SCOTUS said this is NOT a federal issue; it is an issue for STATES individually and the stats’ voters to decide. Maybe the ones who voted for Dobbs did like Scalia voted: based on the Constitution, not whatever religious beliefs they adhered to. Imagine that!

Not having intercourse before you are ready to have a family is a 100% effective means of birth control.
You are correct – there are many forms of birth control and all of them are readily available.
If your condom fails – there are multiple morning after pills. Or you can have an abortion prior to your states limit,
or you can travel to a state with a later limit.
Or you can have the child. Many many wonderful children were “unwanted”.

Yet, they still have had parents who did want them and take care of them through their entire lives.

We would all like to know what factors actually increase crime, and which actually decrease it.
We have seen crime declined steadily for 40 years and then suddenly rise again precipitously.
That are lots of claims regarding why rates declined, and why they have spiked recently.
I strongly suspect we have enough data now to determine which of those claims correlate and which do not.
I highly doubt that the unwanted children claim holds up.
If you do not want your child – put it up for adoption – there are more than enough people who want those children.

Children are a gift that serves to moderate our tendency to self indulgence. They humble us and teach us, more about ourselves than the child itself. The child also helps to develop our capacity for love in its most unselfish manner. There is a vast gulf between those who have chosen to have children and those that have not. It requires sacrifice and long term thinking, to put aside the immediate gratification in order to serve the needs of the child you have produced. A sense of purpose and need outside of ourselves. To put some of your dreams aside in order to make sure that this fragile being in your care survives and lives to achieve some of those same dreams. They focus us and help us to love others and to sit sometimes and watch as the children around us discover all that is new to them and to love them as they discover life. It also means there is something there that we will surrender our life to protect. It takes a lot but the gifts a parent usually receives anre incalculable. The self indulgent, the self centered, the nose that sticks above the crowd would do well to learn this simple truth. Children makes us complete. We exist primarily to produce them and teach them.

Sam, though some might feel that way, you misunderstand why a person against abortion might permit the states to have that power.
Some people recognize that perfection does not exist, accepting something less. I believe in federalism and that abortion is mostly murder of the unborn. I cannot stop another from doing many bad things, but I can support the Constitution and federalism as part of that Constitution.
My goal is not to eliminate abortion but to contain it and make people recognize the inhumanity. Such recognition, by itself, reduces the numbers.
Abortion is not a federal issue. It is a state issue and always was until Roe.
