Robot Racism: Pittsburgh Professor Sounds Alarm Over “Interacting with White Robots”
In today’s academic environment, there often seems a race to racialize common practices or terminology. Publications clamor for such articles and discovering another hidden racist element in society can bring academic accolades. However, others have already staked out many such areas such as mathematics, astrophysics, statistics, meritocracy, climate change, dieting, tipping, skiing, chess, and organized pantries. Most recently, the American Psychological Association declared that merit-based hiring may be racist. However, University of Pittsburgh sociology professor Mark Paterson has raised the alarm over robotic racism due to the fact that many robots are white.Dr. Paterson teaches in the College of General Studies (CGS), Gender, Sexuality and Women’s Studies (GSWS), Urban Studies, and Center for Bioethics and Health Law.In The Conversation, Paterson noted the rise in “socially assistive robotics” and the dominance of robots with white “skin” made of “shiny white plastic.” As a result, he frets that black children (particularly those requiring assistance) “could end up interacting with white robots.”It is all part of the “poverty of the engineered imaginary”:

The cultural imaginary that enshrines robots as white, and in fact usually female, stretches back to European antiquity, along with an explosion of novels and films at the height of industrial modernity. From the first mention of the word “android” in Auguste Villiers de l’Isle-Adam’s 1886 novel “The Future Eve,” the introduction of the word “robot” in Karel Čapek’s 1920 play “Rossum’s Universal Robots,” and the sexualized robot Maria in the 1925 novel “Metropolis” by Thea von Harbou – the basis of her husband Fritz Lang’s famous 1927 film of the same name – fictional robots were quick to be feminized and made servile.

Of course, making black robots as “servile” would seem to raise other concerns. Nevertheless, others have joined in seeking a review of how robots may be pushing “patriarchy, colonialism and capitalism.”As I recently wrote, these concerns extend to the increasing numbers of “sexbots.”For feminists, the sexbots are allowing men to objectify women and to pursue domination fantasies. In The Guardian, journalist Jenny Kleeman denounced new bots that can hold conversations and even joke precisely because they are “a dream woman” for men who “exist only for men’s use.”

Kathleen Richardson, a robot ethicist at the De Montfort University, wrote that “the development of sex robots will further reinforce relations of power that do not recognize both parties as human subjects.” A supporter of the Campaign Against Sex Robots, Richardson warned “technology is not neutral. It’s informed by class, race and gender. Political power informs the development of technology.”

In Paris, feminists opposed sex-doll brothels on the basis that the dolls cannot consent and allow for violent fantasies. Lorraine Questiaux of the feminist group Mouvement du Nid (Nest Movement) called the brothel a “place that makes money from simulating the rape of a woman.” In Sweden, feminist organizations moved to ban sex bots as advancing the “objectifying, sexualised and degrading attitude to women found in today’s mainstream pornography.” They object to the right of men to create artificial women who “obey their smallest command” and “cannot say no to something that the man wants.”

Notably, Elon Musk could prove the great emancipator from racist robots. While Paterson was raising the alarm, Musk unveiled his robot:

  1. In the mid-1970’s, the English historian Robert Conquest wrote that America’s educated class was the silliest in the world. Whether that statement was true then, it certainly is true now.
    It is a nice question whether Germany in the ’30s or America at this moment is the more obsessed with race. My guess is that we would win that contest. The difference is that our racism is the opposite of Hitler’s: white people good vs. white people bad. One is not better than the other.

                Enigma, what was known as the New World, is a large area, so you realize most of the deaths are not applicable to the US. You also must recognize that each slave exported from Africa involved killings in Africa and black people enslaving their own, placing them on ships to be sold as enslaved people somewhere in the world. More future black slaves started their trek into slavery due to black people than all the other races in the world.

              2. I am not sure that slavery was even “evil” back in those days. It was just a thing, and pretty much everybody did it. Chinese had slaves, Native-Americans had slaves, Muslims had slaves, Africans had slaves. Greeks had slaves, Romans had slaves, Goths had slaves, Israelites had slaves and Hindus had slaves. When defeated in battle, it was probably better than getting a sword run through you. Then, as Mankind got to thinking about it, and led by White People, more specifically, the British Christians, they decided that it was just morally wrong for one person to outright own another person. That idea began to grow over time, and gradually, slavery disappeared from most of the world, except in Africa, where Africans still engage in the practice. About 7 million slaves still exist in Africa. Frankly, black slaves in America were pretty lucky compared to black slaves in the Mid East or Africa, and today, are much better off than most blacks in Africa today.

          Some UK defence minister claimed we have “moved from a post-war to a pre-war world.”
          Thing is, who is going to fight it? We have already seen Americans are not enlisting and even some have gone on TicTok and said they would not enlist or they would dodge a draft if the draft was reinstated. There is a similar sentiment in the UK and other EU countries.
          Again, what if there is a war and no one showed up?

          1. Upstate, if the EU leaders actually cared about doing their job right, they would instead be putting all their efforts into making sure another world war doesn’t happen. It kind of seems like they are resigned to the idea that WW3 is inevitable (if they don’t actually want it, which I wouldn’t rule out), and are just thinking about how to act now in light of that inevitability. To me that is totally unacceptable. It reminds me of how Europe sleep walked into WW1 and precipitated the two greatest catastrophes in human history. If Europe had had better leadership in the 1910s that all could have been avoided. It seems the same low quality of leadership is in power now.

We are headed for some deep doo-doo, one way or another. I confess I’ve had some sleepless nights over the entire West’s lurching into fascism. That this has all been brought about with such intention is maddening.

Upstate, I am reading a book about the times right before WWI and the population was going crazy, anarchists were bombing everything, the young were aimless etc etc and the leaders worried about them not showing up for a potential war. The bad news is that the war came and it was horrific but the good news is that the young of every country showed up and fought valiantly.

            The parallels of the early 1900s to today were frightening to read and it sure seems like we are in a pre-war time right now.

            A few decades ago, a ‘neo-con’ was just that: a new conservative who had been formerly a liberal… a reformed liberal who had learned a life lesson, if you wish. Without really searching my memory for other possible candidates, Ronald Reagan is possibly the last actual converted liberal, neo-con I can think of in government. Trump certainly isn’t conservative, he’s overwhelmingly a moderate and definitely not conservative when it comes to government spending that is a reminder of his Democrat roots.             At one point, lesser actual neo-cons outside of elected public office willingly accepted the label:

            It’s hard to have rational discussions when populist language is used by all involved to set an emotional space for the discussion instead of a rational space. It then goes on to define “on the soil” as including children of citizen parents sent to foreign countries on government business such as military deployment or on a foreign flagged vessel within national waters and other situations. The SCOTUS is ignoring this issue which is a sad way to interpret the Constitution.
