McCaskill: Media Must Stop Fact Checking Joe Biden

MSNBC contributor and former Democratic Senator Claire McCaskill has been one of the most vocal voices attacking critics of Joe Biden and opposing any investigations into his family or his policies. She attacked journalists and others who spoke in favor of free speech, calling them “Putin apologists” and Putin lovers. Now she is lashing out at the media for fact checking Joe Biden’s false claims . . . any false claims.

McCaskill called The New York Times “ridiculous” for a story correcting Biden’s false claims about the economy. She warned the media that they are only helping Trump by pointing out Biden’s false or misleading claims:

“What everyone says when you travel, ‘Well, you wouldn’t elect him again, would you? Hasn’t the country learned? You wouldn’t ever give this guy power again, would you? Tell us that he’s not going to be re-elected. Please, tell us you’ve learned your lesson.’ So The only blemish on the great country of America worldwide is, in fact, Donald Trump.”

She then added,

“Can I make a suggestion? I move that every newspaper in America quits doing any fact checks on Joe Biden until they fact check Donald Trump every morning on the front page. It is ridiculous that The New York Times fact check Joe Biden on something. I mean, he vomits lies, Trump vomits lies. And he, every day over and over and over again. And it’s just ridiculous that The New York Times is doing a fact check on Biden while they let Trump- they’re numb to the torrent of lies coming out of Trump’s mouth.”

It is that easy. Just stop fact checking. Of course, the media has always fact checked Trump with a certain glee. Such fact checks are a good thing and Trump has been legitimately criticized for many claims. However, McCaskill and others believe that the media must fall in line with the effort to reelect Biden.

The Washington Post previously gave Biden a rare “bottomless Pinocchio” for his false claims. According to McCaskill, that must stop at least until after the election. The public simply does not need to know such facts when democracy is at stake. It appears that ignorance is bliss when it comes to politics.

Of course, it was Benjamin Franklin who said “being ignorant is not so much a shame, as being unwilling to learn.”

But, since Turley is paid to attack Democrats and mainstream media, he, as usual, takes comments out of context to create a false narrative. And, as usual, the gullibles buy it.     Here Turley poo-poos the labels being tagged on MAGA Republicans. As though cutting-off Ukraine is part of some wise strategy. Perhaps Turley would like to explain ‘what’ that strategy is. Like, ‘How does cutting-off Ukraine advance U.S. interests’???

    Has anyone heard Donald Trump explain how cutting-off Ukraine will strengthen America’s position in the world? Has Mike Johnson explained it?? Has any Fox News pundit explained it??? The answer to all three of these questions is a resounding ‘NO!!!’

    American’s status, as a global superpower, rests largely on our friendships. We have more economically powerful friends than both Russia and China combined.

    But these friendships have been built on America’s perceived reliability as a functional bedrock of democracy. That perception, however, is being severely tested.

    It is widely known in Washington that aid to Ukraine has enough Republican support to pass in both the Senate and House. House Speaker Johnson knows this. But he refuses to call a vote because Donald Trump has ordered him not to.

    So here we have an ex-president facing 91 felony counts, after fomenting an insurrection, yet he’s the presumed Republican nominee despite a calender full of court dates. And this ex-president is ordering the House Speaker to prevent a majority of Congress from honoring U.S. commitments.

    This same ex-president ordered an impeachment inquiry into the current president. And while that inquiry has crumbled, MAGA Republicans now want to shut-down the government unless Democrats accept a long series of budget riders demanding far-right policies.

    All this chaos, generated by Donald Trump, has convinced our allies that the U.S. is a super clown show. Not only are we cutting-off Ukraine, we’re going to cut-off our own government!! How utterly stupid can we get???

    Those of us who grew up in the post-war era can scarcely comprehend how dysfunctional the U.S. has become. Therefore, to think the world hasn’t noticed is dysfunctional in itself. Trump is a stooge for Putin and he has all but admitted it! Historians will look back and say, “It was treason in broad daylight but apologists kept denying.”

He says they have no desire to govern Ukranian’s that are hostile towards Russians. They had already learned that lesson. Zelensky is corrupt, he’s selling off the fertile land of the Ukraine to the highest bidder Blackrock. I would tell you to listen to his multiple podcasts on the issue. He is a well respected military analyst with alot of contacts in Europe. I don’t hide, I have other things to do.

        1. From what I understand, America has provided over $300B to Ukraine since 2014 in support of the Ukraine and a war that could NEVER be won. There have been 500,000 Uranians killed fighting and 10M civilians leaving without desire to return. Russia is the victor and will write the terms for ending the conflict with whoever replaces Zelensky.       SOMETIMES, they quote them out of context and deceptively edited.
      Close to universally when you get the actual quote in context the meaning is different – often extremely different.

      Contrast this to Biden – who is damned by his own words. Adding context only makes it worse and more self evident how significant his cognitive impairment is.

      My father went through three years of cognative decline prior to his death. I have great sympathy for what Biden is going through.

  7. Jonathan: Speaking of fact checking. On Friday DJT appealed to Black voters before the primary today in S. Carolina. He compared the 91 felony charges he faces to what Black people face: “A lot of people said that’s why the Black people liked me, because they had been hurt so badly and discriminated against. And they actually viewed me as I’m discriminated against…”. DJT went on to say his mug shot, the one when he was arraigned in Fulton county, is being worn by Black people on T-shirt–a sign they are embracing him: “I’m being indicted for you, the Black population”.

    FACT CHECK: A recent Quinnipac poll shows Biden leading DJT among Black voters 79% to 19%. Not exactly embracing DJT. And the reason some Black people are wearing the T-shirt with DJT’s mug shot is because they are mocking him–not embracing him.

    Black people have long memories. They remember the Black Lives Matter protests over the killing of George Floyd when DJT said “When the looting starts, the shooting starts”. They also remember when DJT dined at Mar-a-Lago with Nick Fuentes, an avowed White supremacist. They also remember when DJT falsely claimed Obama was born in Kenya and he referred to Haiti as a “shithole” country. None of this will be lost on Black voters when they go to the polls in November. They are not about to vote for a racist.

  12. Jonathan: I am a big proponent of fact checking. I try to do it every day on your blog. Cudos to “Anonymous” (the sane one) for being the pre-imminent fact checker here. This is necessary because your blog has turned into a fact free universe where conspiracy theories abound.

    The worst offender lately is John Say. In several very wordy comments in response to your column yesterday (“Bad Times at Black Rock”) and my comment he claimed, for example, that the charges against Alexander Smirnov were “MINOR”. A simple fact check shows the contrary. Under 18USC1001 lying to the FBI is a federal crime carrying up to 5 years in prison. Say then claimed the man arrested in SD for threatening election workers in Arizona was just an exercise in “free speech”. Nope. Fact check: 18USC245(b)(1)(A) makes it a federal crime to threaten election workers. I could cite other of Say’s false claims but you get the point.

    But on to Claire McCaskill’s criticism of the NY Times. That was prompted by the Times article (2/21) “Fact-checking Biden’s Recent Economic Talking Points”. Every President, especially during an election year, wants to take credit for economic gains during his administration. Biden is no exception. So I don’t fault the Times for trying to put Biden’s claims “in context”.

    This election year DJT can’t and won’t run on the economy because by most metrics the economy is doing fine. His campaign is focused on his false claims he is a “victim” of an out of control Biden/ DOJ that is prosecuting him solely to prevent him from being re-elected. It’s all about “election interference”. A fact check shows that is false. DJT is being prosecuted because he led the insurrection to overturn the 2020 election and then refused to turn over top secret documents. And DJT can’t blame Biden/DOJ for the criminal prosecutions in NY and Georgia. Those are state prosecutions over which neither Biden nor the DOJ has control.

    Then, we have the $355 million civil judgment in NY by Judge Engoron against DJT. That civil case was brought under NY state law. Can’t blame that on Biden or the DOJ. And what about the civil defamation award of $83.3 million to E. Jean Carroll? DJT can’t blame Joe Biden for that. It was again brought under NY state law. So as the Presidential campaign heats up fact checking is important to expose the lies DJT keeps telling about his criminal and civil cases.

    3. Looks like you’re the one that needs fact checking on claims that on most metrics the economy is doing fine. Inflation is a tough one to nail down, because the Biden admin will use a number on inflation that doesn’t count food, housing, and energy, the three major expenses for people. Still, inflation is up 18% and wages just 15%. which means 1) non-seniors are worse off now than when the evil orange man was president, and 2) seniors who haven’t had a 15% increase in SocSec are really hurting. Anyone who goes to the grocery store knows things aren’t fine.

      You say that 18 US 1001 is significant – is it more significant that possessing crack cocaine ? No.
      Until recently (changed under Trump) f you are convicted of possession of small amounts of crack cocaine, you would be guilty of PWID – that is possession with intent to deliver. Did you need to actually try to sell any ? Nope, just have more than about a days personal supply and you will be convicted as a drug dealer and you will go to a federal prison for a long time.

      George Papdoulis was convicted of violating 18 US 1001 – like AS, he got a date wrong in communicatiosn with the FBI.
      Papadoulis plead guilty and was sentenced to 30days.

      Van Der Zant also accepted a plea to 18 IS 1001 – he also got 30 days.

      DOJ was recomending no jail time for Flynn in his 18
      US 1001 plea deal until it all blew up – because there was no actual investigation at the time Strrzok interviewed Flynn and DOJ withdrew the charges and in more proof of the political insanity and corruption in DC the judge tried to appoint himself prosecutor.

      The Flynn case was a real mess – there is excellent evidence – like emails from McCabe that Flynn was actually targeted because he had provided a letter in support of a top Female FBI agent who alleged that her boss – none other than McCabe had sexually harrassed her.

      Your “5 years” claim is the MAXIMUM sentence. Outside the J6 witch-hunt that is reserved for people with egregious prior records. Prior crimes like kidnapping and murder.

      Trump’s is 6pts higher today that he was in 2020 – where he allegedly lost by 44,000 votes.

      You laugh at Trump’s appeal to black voters – claiming there is no way they will vote for him.
      Yet he has likely picked up 1M black voters since 2020 – that is more than the 44,000 needed to flip the race.

      A year ago Trump was behind Biden. Trump has caught up and gone ahead concurrently with your lawfare camapign.

      The big deal with now is that Trump’s lead is outside the margin of fraud.
      That means that the dubious tactics used in 2020 – and often reused in 2022 will not work in 2024,
      and they are potentially not worth the risk.

      You got away with an awful lot in 2020 because covid made people tolerate way to much meddling in elections.
      Because even when the claims of fraud are highly credible it is politically a hard sell to claim you lost the popular vote but had the election stolen by fraud. Trump is currently winning the popular vote by more than any fraud that can be pulled off.
      So long as Trump is ahead in the popular vote – the risk to democrats of Fraud being taken seriously is too high.

      The Biden administration is practicing more censorship today than in 2020, but Twitter is out from under the government thumb, it is unlikely that anyone is going to censor the new york post for a week again.

      And frankly we are past the point of censorship working – Biden has already LOST the hearts and minds of the majority of voters.
      You can not censor them back.

      The election is months away and lots could change. But the most likely changes favor Trump not Biden.

      Peace is not going to break out all over, and even if it did it will not be a peace that makes people happy and celebrate.
      The economy is highly unlikely to get significantly stronger, but it could easily get worse.
      Aside from everything else elections tend to drive the economy down.

      In truth the economy is in a form of the doldrums similar but not identical to the 70’s every increase in growth is matched by an increase in inflation, so the FED is stuck in mildly tight policies that constraine growth AND inflation.

      Put simply there are many many possible reasons for the economy to go south – and in truth the FED should have forced a recession to clear inflation 2 years ago. But it did not, so Biden is stuck with Blah headed into an election.
