It often seems like there is nothing left today that is not a battleground over our political and social differences. We can now add Easter. The Biden White House triggered a firestorm by picking Good Friday to announce that Easter Sunday will now be the “Transgender Day of Visibility.” At the same time, families objected to regulations on Easter egg designs, barring children from including any religious imagery or references on this religious holiday. There are even objections to the use of eggs at the annual White House egg roll.
Despite the criticism from various politicians, including Speaker Mike Johnson, Jean-Pierre went on X Saturday to reaffirm that Sunday is to be designated as the “Transgender Day of Visibility.”
Transgender Visibility Day actually began 15 years ago and many have noted that the overlap with Easter Sunday this year is a coincidence.
President Joe Biden has made no comment on the controversy and issued his Easter proclamation , which can be read in full here.
White House spokesperson Andrew Bates did respond on Saturday:
“As a Christian who celebrates Easter with Family, President Biden stands for bringing people together and upholding the dignity and freedoms of every American. Sadly, it’s unsurprising politicians are seeking to divide and weaken our country with cruel, hateful, and dishonest rhetoric. President Biden will never abuse his faith for political purposes or for profit.”
In the meantime, the White House’s annual Easter Egg Roll is being called a celebration of “National Guard Families.” The 2024 “Call for Youth Art” flyer states that “Children should depict on an egg template (see Art Submission form) a snapshot of their life – a favorite activity, scenery in your state, your military family, a day-in-your life, etc.” The same warning has appeared in prior years. However, under its restrictions list, the flyer noted, “The Submission must not include any questionable content, religious symbols, overtly religious themes, or partisan political statements.”
One can understand the desire to bar “Let’s Go Brandon” eggs. Moreover, the Easter egg event has long been treated as open to people of all faiths and background. It has been treated more as a celebration of spring. However, some families have objected that the holiday does have a religious origin and that the bar on any religious references like a cross or other symbols is an affront.
As a legal matter, there is no bar on religious displays in such White House events, which have included such symbols in celebrations of Christian, Jewish, and Muslim holidays. Nevertheless, this limitation has existed in prior administrations.
On the positive side, the egg roll will involve eggs. PETA has asked the First Lady to substitute potatoes for the eggs. PETA President Ingrid Newkirk objected that:
“Children love animals and would be sad to learn that the eggs used for fun and games at the White House come from tormented hens whose lives are spent in cages that afford them less space than a standard sheet of typing paper. Easter should be a time of renewal and joy for all sentient beings—and that means hens, too.”
By having children decorate and roll spuds, Newkirk suggested, the First Lady could remove these little “cholesterol bombs” from the diet of children. Besides, she added, “potatoes are cheaper and healthier than eggs and leave birds in peace.”
The head of Britain’s National Health Service (NHS) added his own warning to people not to eat whole eggs and to cut back on the sweets to protect their health.
However, the Easter Bunny appears to have been vindicated this week in a scientific study that found that eating 12 eggs a week did not increase one’s cholesterol. Indeed, it found possible heart benefits to egg consumption.
That proposal was clearly rejected for now.

Marilyn Lands soundly beat her GOP opponent 62.4% to 37.6%. Lands ran on a platform of protecting women’s reproductive rights. This comes after the Alabama SC ruled last month that embryos are “children” and suspended IVF procedures. Land’s decisive victory sent shockwaves through the GOP dominated state–fears that the GOP’s anti-abortion position will have adverse consequences in November.
–Then, 40 former officials in the DJT administration have come out opposing him this November. Never before have so many former officials opposed the leading GOP candidate. The list includes Mike Pence, Bill Barr, Nikki Haley, Jim Mattis, John Kelly, Mike Mulvaney and now Mark Esper, DJT’s former Defense Secretary. All say DJT is a “threat to our Democracy”. When that many former DJT officials say they will not support the GOP candidate you know there is a problem.
—And in London town an appellate justice refused DJT’s request to appeal the ruling of a lower court dismissing his case against Christopher Steele and ordering DJT to pay 300,000 pounds in legal costs. Whenever DJT sues someone he loses.
–And all those who helped DJT peddle the lies about the 2020 election are getting their just desserts. John Eastman and Jeffrey Clark are about to lose their law licenses. Sidney Powell and other lawyers will probably also lose their law licenses as well as being prosecuted for the crimes they committed. And Ronna McDaniel, who thought she had a cushy $300,000 job with NBC, just got dispatched because she pushed the attempts at election sabotage. As MSNBC host Rachel Maddow put it: “You wouldn’t hire…a mobster to work at the DA’s office, right?”
–Finally, the day of reckoning is coming for DJT on April 15. He is facing his first criminal trial before Judge Merchan. All of DJT’s attempts to get the trial dismissed or delayed have been soundly rejected by the Judge.
So, yes, MLK was right–the arc of the universe does “bend toward justice”. Sometimes it takes the arc time to bend but finally the fraudsters and cheats are being held accountable. At long last!
Have you noticed that the primary witness in that trial is a convicted perjuror, and that recently a federal judge just said that he lied in court not long ago. The woman to whom the money was paid owes DJT over $600000 in legal fees. This case is bogus and politically motivated, as was the one with Judge Engoron which will soon be overturned. Then Letitia James will be sued for civil rights violations. She has a big mouth.

During his first term (and hopefully ONLY term), President Biden has had 4 Easters. Easter did not fall on March 31st in any other year except for this year. He could have issued a presidential proclamation in any of those other March 31s to commemorate the day. No, it isn’t. The rules for the Easter egg design competition were set years ago and haven’t changed. I’m not sure how old the contest is. I saw one reference saying that Jill Biden introduced it in 2021, but I’ve seen other references to a contest of some kind in 2017 and in 2011. Maybe they were different. But at any rate, the rules are set by the Egg Board, and apply only to that one art competition. They ban overtly religious designs, and also partisan political designs, and “inappropriate” ones, which I assume means sexual. Also any design that disparages the Egg Board, which rules out anything PETA-inspired or promoting veganism.

Funny, part of my job in federal government before I retired in 2017 was keeping track of White House press releases so that I could inform my agency of any that seemed agency-relevant, and I do not recall seeing any about Trans Visibility Day.
