For the second year in a row, Harvard University is ranked dead last among universities and colleges on the annual survey of free speech on campuses by the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE). Harvard shares a score of 0.00 with Columbia University. They are followed by New York University, University of Pennsylvania and Barnard College.
In my book “The Indispensable Right: Free Speech in an Age of Rage,” I discuss free speech on campuses and note that public universities could prove the last line of defense for this right. It is not that faculty members are necessarily any more protective of free speech or intellectual diversity at these schools. However, they are directly subject to the First Amendment as state schools and thus can be taken to court more readily for denials of the right.
Conversely, at schools like Harvard, Columbia, Penn, and NYU, the faculty appears unconcerned about their dismal records on free speech. There is still a growing anti-free speech movement on our campuses. It is notable that these schools also have largely purged conservative and Republican faculty from their ranks. A past survey found that over 75 percent of faculty identify as liberal or very liberal. Another survey found that many departments do not have a single Republican.
I was disappointed that my alma mater University of Chicago has fallen from number 1 to 44, though it still gets a shout out from FIRE as being a consistently strong free speech environment. The concerning fall has occurred under with the presidency of Armand Paul Alivisatos. He replaced one of the greatest advocates of free speech in academia, the late Robert Zimmer.
My proudest moment came when Zimmer sent a famous letter to the class of 2020. The letter warned students that they will not be shielded from views that upset them or given “safe spaces” on campus.
In the letter, the university declared that “our commitment to academic freedom means that we do not support so-called ‘trigger warnings,’ we do not cancel invited speakers because their topics might prove controversial, and we do not condone the creation of intellectual ‘safe spaces’ where individuals can retreat from ideas and perspectives at odds with their own.”
It was a moment of clarity that is missing in today’s environment of speech codes, microaggressions, and cancel campaigns.
When Zimmer stepped down in 2021, there was a virtual panic in the free speech community. He was our champion and placed one of the premier academic institutions in the world on the side of free speech.
Notably, Barnard College (unlike the other schools at the bottom) has joined other schools in adopting the Chicago Principles. It released a statement committing itself to a new course. We will have to wait to see if faculty will honor such a commitment.
George Washington University, where I teach, is 161st out of 251 schools with a below average ranking.
What was surprising this year were the schools receiving a “warning” about anti-free speech policies. They include Pepperdine University, Hillsdale College, and Brigham Young University. FIRE found that all “have policies that clearly and consistently state” that they prioritize “other values over a commitment to freedom of speech.” The President of Hillsdale responded in this column.
If there will be substantial improvements in the anti-free speech environment in higher education in private colleges, they will only come from donors refusing to support these schools until they change their policies and culture. Administrators and faculty feel little pressure to reverse these trends. However, they will respond if their intolerance begins to threaten their own budgets and departments.
Higher education has already plunged in trust among citizens under the current administrators and faculty at our colleges and universities. They are destroying the very institutions that sustain them.
In the meantime, public universities can be a strong line of defense for free speech, offering students not just free speech environments but the direct protection of the First Amendment. What is missing is greater diversity of viewpoints on faculties. I have written about how taxpayers and legislators can exercise their own power to demand more diversified and tolerant environments at these schools.
While some professors have argued that free speech and intellectual diversity are not essential to higher education, most of the public disagrees and has a right to expect a diverse and tolerant environment at state-supported schools.
In my book and past congressional testimony, I have also encouraged Congress to adopt ten basic prerequisites for federal funding for colleges and universities on free speech. If these schools want to continue to deny free speech to students and faculty, they should do so with their own funds and contributions from donors who share their anti-free speech agendas. Taxpayers should not be supporting schools which deny a right considered “indispensable” to our constitution and culture.

What they want to do is pit Americans against one another… .’ McMaster writes that the “fragility” of Trump’s ego and “his deep sense of aggrievement” would never allow him to make this kind of distinction.
McMaster felt it was his “duty” to point out to Trump that Russian President Vladimir Putin “was not and would never be Trump’s friend.” McMaster warned Trump that Putin is “the best liar in the world” and would try to “play” Trump to get what he wanted and manipulate him with “ambiguous promises of a ‘better relationship.’”
The final straw that ended McMaster’s tenure in the White House seems to have been when he publicly said on February 17, 2018, at the Munich Security Forum — the annual gathering of top Western foreign policy officials — that the indictment of a group of Russian intelligence officers for their interference in the 2016 US presidential election was “incontrovertible” evidence of Russian meddling in that election.
Trump soon tweeted, “General McMaster forgot to say that the results of the 2016 election were not impacted or changed by the Russians….” Once the commander-in-chief started publicly castigating him on Twitter, it was obvious that McMaster would not be long for the White House.
McMaster’s account of the Trump team is not pretty. Steve Bannon, Trump’s “chief strategist” early in the presidency, is portrayed as a “fawning court jester” who played “on Trump’s anxiety and sense of beleaguerment … with stories, mainly about who was out to get him and what he could do to ‘counterpunch.’”
Meanwhile, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Secretary of Defense James Mattis were often at odds with Trump, McMaster says. Tillerson, who had previously run Exxon, is portrayed as inaccessible to top officials in Trump’s administration, while Mattis is described as an obstructionist. McMaster writes that Tillerson and Mattis viewed Trump as “dangerous” and seemed to construe their roles as if “Trump was an emergency and that anyone abetting him was an adversary.” Trump himself also contributed to the dysfunction: “He enjoyed and contributed to interpersonal drama in the White House and across the administration.”
Notice how many decorated military leaders formerly in his administration have spoken out against Trump–and they all say the same thing–he’s lacking in knowledge of history, lacking in patriotism, is petty, vindictive, doesn’t listen, and is hell-bent on getting revenge and appearing to be in control of the situation. Of course Putin wants Trump to win–for some of the same reasons he wanted im to win in 2016–to remove sanctions, try to get Russia back into the G-7, but now, to pull funding for Ukraine. This is why Republicans keep trash-talking Zelenskyy and Ukraine. There is, in fact, no one weaker than Trump–a petty, narcissistic egomaniac who craves power, attention and adulation and who will do anything necessary to get it and keep it. Former President Donald Trump wants to spend trillions of dollars on tax cuts. His plan to pay for that is alarming some mainstream economists.
Trump proposed sweeping tariffs on all $3 trillion worth of imports into the United States, including a 60% tariff on imports from China and a 10% across-the-board tariff on imports from other nations.
Recently, Trump doubled down on the threat, saying he is considering tariffs of up to 20% on most imports in a bid to protect working-class jobs and punish what he labels unfair trading practices.
In theory, the unprecedented tariff hikes could raise trillions of dollars, funds that would help cover the cost of the tax cuts. However, many economists warn that those tariffs could backfire – badly – by raising prices on American families, killing jobs and setting off a global trade war.
It’s part of the reason Goldman Sachs in an analyst note this week said Trump’s economic policies – particularly on trade – would cause America’s economy to shrink. By contrast, Vice President Kamala Harris’ economic policy proposals would grow the economy, Goldman Sachs predicted.

The Urban Institute Brookings Institute of Tax Policy calculated the cost to be $1,800/year;
The Center For American Progress estimated the cost to be $3,900–assuming the 20% figure;
The Peterson Institute of International Economics puts the loss at $1,700.
Trump refuses to back down or admit that imposing tariffs would essentially amount to a sales tax because the increased cost of imported goods is paid by the consumer in the form of higher costs for goods and component parts–not by the exporting country. The above is not taking into consideration reciprocal tariffs that likely would be imposed by countries to which we export goods. Then, there’s what would happen to perishable agricultural products like fruits and vegetables if Trump incarcerates and deports the millions of migrants who pick and pack our produce. We don’t have replacements for them. Trump does not understand economics.

When an institution has that kind of power, diversity of thought is a moral obligation. At this point, one would have to burn most colleges to ground and start over to meet that obligation. The group think has become impenetrable.
When I was in college, I politely challenged my professors, and I was fortunate in that they magnanimously rose to the occasion. I never fully adopted their outlook, but I did come to accept some of it after I left graduate school. My thinking has continued to evolve.
This is an outlook most of my relatives will never care to understand. They’re still trying to body snatch my brain, so I listen patiently, but if I know–with metaphysical certitude–that if I challenged them the way I used to challenge my professors, Thanksgiving would go bye-bye 🙁

More accurately, places where young people can be gathered together for indoctrination. Not always schools. Wherever the place or the supposed function, there is a central theme.

The hajjis prowled through their occupied Christian lands, forcibly taking the biggest, strongest boys from their parents. These very young boys were then grouped together in camps that the hajjis had styled after Sparta: an unending program of physical hardening and teachings of the skills of war. Denied every normal thing in adolescent life: play, sexual attraction to girls, etc. They were indoctrinated that their only goal in life was to be the shock troops of the Caliph of the day, that if they did die in battle, there was no better way to die.
Then you have the Hitler Youth Movement of the 1930’s and 1940’s. No focus on education: instead, National Socialism and anti-Semitism being the focus of that youth group.

Not a college or university – a youth movement sold as being similar to our Boy Scouts, 4-H, etc. As Hitler used his youth group to indoctrinate into the National Socialist version of Marxist-communist theology, the USSR indoctrinated youths to become faithful followers and believers in the Soviet Union versioin of Marxist-communist theology.
The central theme in this is that whether a “school” of some sort or a youth group that supposedly helped children grow to be strong, wide adults, whatever was involved, the central theme was to indoctrinate to serve mindlessly a theology that rejected independent thought, family, church, etc.
There is very little to differentiate between the hajji terrorist Muslim theologies and youth indoctrination than the Marxist theology and it’s youth indoctrination that also rejects loyalty to the load bearing walls of a civil society.

If a person takes a look at what is going on in the UK, they will see an alarming trend where everyday common citizens are being harassed and in some cases arrested for making an offhanded remark, posting something on Facebook, or reposting. The police have been given a great deal of authority and lack common sense. In one case a 14 year old autistic child was visited by the police an told that because he told a girl, who dressed like a girl,, and was a girl and said she was a boy, “No, you’re a girl.” He was told that if he persisted in his radicalized ideology, he could end up in prison.
Citizens are given an option to sign a confession of a “Non crime crime” and pay to go to a reeducation seminar or they will face having their “hate” be put in a permanent record (for their employers to see) and face arrest.
Harry Miller, a former police officer was visited by the police a few years back and was told they were there to “check on his thinking” because of a Facebook post. He was so alarmed, he filed suit and took his case to the high court and won. The government employees hundreds of bureaucrats and he stood alone and won his case.
Meanwhile, the police who now have an added component to their oath swear to defend “human rights” but this additive statement allows them to act as a law of their own.
Not everyone has the fortitude and forbearance and quite frankly the time to take on the state. It is frightening how common sense seems to have flown out the window and the masses follow in lockstep with the loudest voices of activists groups as opposed to knowing and understanding their rights and the law.
Human nature is human nature. If an institute such as a school, police, government etc. choose sides, then those who have been inculcated with a radical ideology will often view any other point of view or those that hold these views as the “enemy.”
This election will not be about personalities (both candidates are lacking in many aspects) but it is about policy. Voters must look past the personalities and see what policies will be best in the long run. It doesn’t matter if a person hates the former President, they should be concerned that his opponent will not and cannot sit down for an interview that is not scripted nor can they face hard questions with difficult follow up question. Both candidates should be subjected to hard and difficult questions that are being hurled at them in force. If they cannot stand up to such scrutiny, then they need to go home

My first degree in criminology back in the 1970’s is now well behind me. But I was obligated to take at least one psychology course every single year of that degree. One thing I do remember well from way back then was a discussion that IQ tests were badly flawed in that the test questions had an unintended cultural bias baked into the cake. Back then in the early 1970’s, nobody was disputing that fact – the IQ tests being discussed were from the 30, 20 years earlier, etc.
So with the IQ tests of the day being constructed by the intelligentsia of Harvard, Stanford, etc., if the people surrounding you were from that milieu as you grew up, the IQ test was essentially written to test people like you. If instead you grew up in a small sharecropper community in Georgia, Alabama, the oil patch in Texas, a Montana ranching community, no matter what your skin color, the environment you were brought up in was a handicap to your comprehension of questions originating in self-appointed elitist minds.
Black Americans as far as this specific subject goes, were very much justified in attacking IQ tests of the day that determined that black Americans as a race were just glorified monkeys, not as intelligent as white Americans. (Part of George’s belief that third and fourth generation black Americans should be “compassionately repatriated” to countries they’d never set foot in)

I do not recall who it was, some former CEO of some tech company, but he stopped his hate for Trump, looked at what Trump did, his policies, his record as president objectively and made his own conclusion: Trump’s presidency was not all bad, a lot of good and the COVID part so not his fault.
Looking at Harris and Waltz records, not much there or that which is really good. If they think tampons in boys restrooms is good progress someone needs their head checked.
