Get Musk: Leading Investor Calls for the Prosecution of Elon Musk for “Undermining” the Federal Government

Silicon Valley investor Roger McNamee this weekend went on MSNBC’s “Last Word” and called for the arrest of Elon Musk for “undermining” the federal government by sharing his opinions on X.

McNamee is the latest denizen of the global elite to call for criminalizing speech to silence those with opposing views.McNamee is the founding partner of Elevation Partners and has a colorful history as a band member, a volunteer for Eugene McCarthy and a protester against Vietnam.

As discussed in my book The Indispensable Right: Free Speech in an Age of Rage, he is like many liberal baby boomers now joining the anti-free speech movement. They have decided that free speech, once the defining right for the left, is now an existential threat.

McNamee’s rationale for criminalizing speech is chillingly shallow and irrational. He declared that somehow Musk’s political views made him a danger as the head of companies of major importance to the United States. It does not bother him when CEOs adopt far left views, just Musk opposing some of those views:

“You have somebody who runs a really strategic defense and aerospace projects for the federal government who’s actively undermining the government that’s paying him. And somewhere in that is a legal case that needs to be prosecuted.”

Perish the thought that a CEO might undermine the government.

McNamee is using the government contracts with SpaceX as a reason to censor Musk’s political and social views.

“The critical element in thinking about Elon Musk is that, like any American, he has a right to his own opinion, and he has a right to express his opinion. However, that right is not unlimited. He is under some special limitations that would not apply to normal people because his company, specifically Starlink and SpaceX are government contractors and, as such, he has obligations to the government that would, for any normal person, and should for him, require him to moderate his speech in the interest of national security.”

So, according to McNamee, if your company makes something that the government wants (including rescuing the currently stranded astronauts in space), he must give up his right to express political views, including against censorship.

McNamee embraces the power of the government to dictate viewpoints or at least silence certain views as a matter of national security. It is no accident that the overriding objective is to “get Musk.” Musk has proven the single greatest barrier to the global anti-free speech movement.

As with the effort in Brazil to block X entirely for refusing to censor political opponents of the government, McNamee’s call for state-driven censorship is where the movement is going next.

Notably, after Musk purchased Twitter, Hillary Clinton called upon European officials to force him to censor American citizens under the infamous Digital Services Act (DSA). Recently, Democratic leaders like Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison praised Brazil for its action to prevent citizens from having access to unfettered news sources.

What is most striking about these efforts is that they occurred after the failure of Plan A: to get Americans to embrace censorship.  Facebook even ran a creepy campaign to try to get young people to accept censorship, or “content moderation.”

The commercials show people like “Joshan” who says that he “grew up with the internet.” Joshan mocks how much computers have changed and then objects how privacy and censorship have not evolved as much as our technology. As Joshan calls for “the blending of the real world and the internet world,” content moderation is presented as part of this not-so-brave new world.

Joshan and his equally eager colleagues Chava and Adam were presented by Facebook as the shiny happy faces of young people longing to be content modified.  They were all born in 1996 — the sweet spot for censors who saw young people as allies to reduce free speech.

It did not work. Despite some erosion of free speech among young people, it takes a great deal to get a free people to give up their freedoms. Plan B is now to accomplish this objective of speech controls through national and global regulation. Figures like McNamee and Bill Gates are ready to support this brave new world of speech regulation by global censors.

While claiming unprecedented threats from “disinformation,” these are the same voices and rationales discussed in my book that have been used for centuries to limit the speech of others. They are selling the same defective product with the promise that less freedom will lead to a better life.

For global elites like McNamee, free speech is not just dispensable but distracting. Only fools would listen to these voices in trading away our indispensable right.

    How much money is being paid to companies by the Federal Government to spy on its citizens.
    Does Roger McNamee mean that these companies are not telling the American citizens about what they are doing for the good of the government, because “government knows best”?
    Wouldn’t you like to know how much the government pays companies like Microsoft, Apple, Google, Verizon, Comcast, Amazon etc., and what they do for that money?

    1. As the founding partner of Elevation Partners, which prior to co-founding the firm, McNamee co-founded private equity firm Silver Lake Partners and headed the T. Rowe Price Science and Technology Fund.

      I’d say it’s entirely possible he’s in business competition with Musk. Follow the money.

      Bono, who is the Former Managing Director of Elevation Partners, is also a cofounder of The Rise Fund, a global social impact fund established in 2016 which invests in seven sectors aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

    2. Government may not pay a third party to do what it is not allowed to do itself.

      As a separate matter – with extremely rare exceptions – everything that is done ACTUALLY privately – is private – Government has no right to spy on companies or individuals or demand or even buy information from them. Conversely with very few exceptions almost everything government does MUST be transparent – open to the public. Government has powers NOT rights. Government has no right to privacy.

        When government fails to secure our rights. When it loses our Trust, it is our right to alter or abolish it.

        The purpose of elections is to obtain the consent of the governed – without that – government is not legitimate.

        Elections are conducted lawfully – because otherwise they do not bestow the consent of the governed and government is not legitimate.
        While 2020 was not conducted lawfully, lawfully alone is NOT sufficient.

        The left jumps up and down and demands that elections are easy, convenient, impose no burden on the electorate.
        But efforts to accomplish that that undermine the trust of the people – whether accomplished lawfully or not, mean that the election does NOT convey the consent of the governed – and the government is not legitimate.

        In 2020 polls have between 45% and 66% of people beleiving that there was serious election misconduct in some form.
        While again – election laws were not followed, it is worse than that. What is most important is that the election did not assure the consent and trust of the people.

        Myriads of people NOT part of government lied about the Hunter Biden Laptop to get Biden elected. That is legal, but it also undermines the trust of the people in the election and in government. Therefore the government is not legitimate.

        Those of you on the left do not seem to grasp the importance of truth in what you do.

        You have ranted and ranted about Trump’s lies – but the FACT is that the overwhelming majority of people TRUST trump.
        That does NOT mean they agree with him. It just means they know he will do most of what he says in some form. he may make inaccurate predictions, he may exagerate – but he does NOT outright lie.

        But those of you on the left LIE all the time. As a result few trust you. Without trust you are not fit to govern. Withoput trust – even if you win an election you have NOT secured the consent of the governed.

        The declaration of independence is significant because it is THE moral argument for VIOLENCE against government.
        The declaration of independence is the moral and “law of nations” argument for using violence to overthrow government.

        We are not there yet – though the left falsely believes Republicans reached that point on J6 – if that were true, if that were a “Right of the people to altrer and abolish it” moment – the J6 protestors would have come with tens of thousands of AR15’s and Trump would be president.

        But they did not. There was no “insurrection” – claiming their was is ludicrously stupid left wing nut word games.

        But there WAS a protest against an election that did not convey “the consent of the governed” and therefor Congress should NOT have certified that election.

Protested Viet Nam at 12 but objects to Elon Musk having the same free speech, Ba from Yale in History and MBA from Dartmouth but pushes hard driving Anti Trust actions under Biden (would wonder if he even cared about anti – trust until he got very wealthy), Invested in Facebook yrs ago and then wants a monitor on them now to make sure, I suppose, that they don’t stray. Father an investment banker, and mother was a feminist in the 1960’s. Born, raised and indoctrinated in the northeast.
    Too young to be an SDS militant like what I saw in the 1960’s. Many were smart and well off but crazy as loons. Some got better while others died of what they injected. I am not sure whether this guy has multiple talents or is just manic.
    Taking political advice from this guy would be like asking for investment and business advice from a doctor.
    Being a doctor myself I can tell you that doctors have been notoriously awful at making investment and business decisions by themselves. A few are very capable but I stress “very few”. The best hire a pro.

  10. When an ‘R’ is in power, many liberals have bumper stickers saying “Dissent is the highest form of patriotism” and “Question authority.” When the Left is in power (like now), those bumper stickers suddenly disappear. I haven’t seen either bumper sticker since the 2020 election.

    In the Vietnam War days, Roger McNamee’s favored apparatchiks were out of power, now they’re in power. That is the reason for his 180-degree turnaround on free speech. The phrase “nitwit cry-bully” comes to mind.

    1. The far left, Stalinists, New Left, and others use our freedoms to fracture the nation and its culture, but then, instead of supporting free speech, deny it to others when they are in power. That was their mechanism during the Vietnam War and is the same today.

And he is not “undermining the government”, but instead doing what a wealthy and privileged Roger McNamee should be doing by holding it accountable to American taxpayers.

    1. * Not everyone pays taxes. Do you mean voters? With or without principles? Which principles?

      1. I of course mean taxpayers. Government has no money to pay anyone but for the money it forcibly extracts from productive people. What it doesn’t extract it borrows and what it doesn’t borrow it prints. The former puts economic hardship on future generations of Americans to repay, and the latter causes inflation that afflicts all Americans present and future.

  15. The reason this sort of thing is happening more and more is because we have too many twits in this country who think, “Oh, that’s ok. No big deal.” These idiots have no idea what it’s like to actually be tyrannized by a corrupt (Biden crime family), decadent (men menstruate?), and inept state ($34 trillion in federal debt).

    Murdering Elon Musk in prison is certainly thinkable with that level of voter incompetence. I hope I’m wrong, but I haven’t been wrong lately.

  17. MacNamee would benefit from learning about what happened to the Old Bolsheviks in Stalin’s Great Purge. And to Lin Piao and hundreds of other veterans of the Long March when Mao initiated the Great Cultural Revolution. And Ernst Roehm in Hitler’s Night of the Long Knives.

    He is quite expendable once the key forces consolidate power.
