The Enchanting Beauty of Naples, Florida

Tonight, I have the pleasure of giving the keynote address at the annual Venetian Carnival night held by the Ave Maria School of Law in Naples, Florida. I will be discussing my book, The Indispensable Right: Free Speech in an Age of Rage.” In addition to participating in this legendary celebration, the trip allowed me to return to Naples with its gorgeous beaches and sunsets. I never fail to be awed by beauty and power of sunsets in Naples. I wanted to share a series of photos of this nightly wonder.

It is the greatest show on Earth as the sky lights up with the coming of nightfall. Moving from blue to pastels to deep burnt orange, the light show is enchanting. I hope that everyone on the blog will have an opportunity to visit Naples and experience this firsthand. In the meantime, here are a few pictures.

  1. Many thanks for the photos, Professor Turley. We were staying at Marco Island for the month of February and enjoyed the same sunsets on The Gulf of America. We spend our summers in Door County, Wisconsin. Please consider a visit, perhaps address the Northern Door Conservative Club and enjoy the spectacular sunsets on Green Bay at one of our receptions on the Ephraim Yacht Harbor dock.

  2. Excellent and lovely photos. What photographic equipment was used to create these art works?

  3. Wonderful photos, Professor. Honestlawyermostly’s sister lived there for 30 years……we always loved visiting such a gorgeous environment.

BTW, when you walked through the doors of the Ave Maria School of Law, did you happen to shout out:
“Ave Maria! Gee, it’s good to see ya!”?! 🙂

  4. It’s a pity that the Ave Maria Law School is in Florida. It used to be in Michigan, just east of Ann Arbor. The hostility of local authorities drove it away. That explains why Florida has a brighter future than Michigan.

  5. Glad you vould make it to SWFL. While you’re down here, be sure to check out Captiva and Sanibel

  6. Florida is beautiful. No doubt about it. I was born in South Georgia, raised on Army bases from Yokohama, Japan to San Luis Obispo, Ca and Mannheim, Germany and finally Atlanta, Ga. Spent a lot of time in the Bradenton area beaches over the years as well as time in Tallahassee, and beaches near Alligator Point. My parents honeymooned in Miami in 1945. Just really don’t like being in Hurricanes, and I’ve been in a few so I’d rather freeze my a— in Indiana than live in Florida, but I will visit because of the beauty and the nice people there.
Nothing like watching a huge storm (not a Hurricane) role in from over the ocean and onto the beach, exciting yet beautiful to watch raw nature exhibit it’s power.

    1. Please keep the secret that the Central Coast enjoys the only perfect climate in the world.

  7. I remember standing in waist deep water at the beach in naples with my 6 yo daughter on my arm while hundreds of small stingrays “flew” past us. They moved like a flock of birds while I just stood very still. Pretty cool actually.

  8. We live in Naples, on Gulf Shore Blvd. Glad you’re enjoying the beautiful weather. As an M&A, corporate and International lawyer for 40+ years, and a part time historian and political philosopher, I thoroughly enjoy and appreciate your work

  9. Beautiful. Was inland north last time I was in Florida (Gainesville), will have to go to Naples someday. Florida beaches are so nice.

  10. A copy of the book should be sent to Putin.
If anyone needs to enlightened about freedom, it is Putin.
I’m sure he would eat it up.

  11. You’ll see Father Time standing on a pier or boat. He is a reminder of how precious is the one thing we cannot manufacture or expand. Time squandered can never be recouped. That’s why dispassionate, engaged, meritocratic debate — steeped in careful listening and open-minded inquiry — will always outperform expressions of militant rage.
Thus, there is a sweet spot for freedom of thought and speech which is known as Socratic dialog, driven by well-formed questions, and devoid of boisterous, unqualified assertions. Training youth in collaborative problem-solving, leadership, individual contribution, and conflict resolution becomes the most important function of education.

We are in the political mess we’re in exactly because the left took up militant tactics of argumentation. There is simply no path back to normalcy if the right takes up a mirror-image of rage and militancy. We must, like a competent parent, patiently nudge progressives back from their flirtation with brittle, accusatory, dogmatic patterns of thought.

  12. Just missed you again! We are driving around the Southeast this winter in our RV and have happened to be near you during recent speaking engagements, first in Saint Simons and now in Naples. We did take up your suggestion to visit the restaurant you recommended in the former, but, alas, tickets are sold out for your talk in Naples and, camping as we our, we left our black tie attire at home. 🥴

  13. Absolutely spectacular, Dr. Turley. Thank you for sharing these. You could be a photographer, too!

  14. Yes, Jonathan, we who live here in Naples certainly agree with you. Our beaches are nice (but can’t really measure up to those on the East Coast) and we do have those gorgeous sunsets over the Gulf of America. Welcome to you and we hope you enjoy your stay.

    1. I think the beaches in southwest Florida are really nice. I have lived in MA (mostly) and CA (a very short time) and to my mind SW FL has the best beaches.
