The New Jacobins: Guillotines Return as Form of Political Expression

“We got the guillotineyou better run.”

Those words could have easily been expressed at the turn of the nineteenth century as French Jacobins and other groups called for the heads of the wealthy and privileged classes.

Indeed, for some of us, it was a bizarre sense of déjà vu. As the scene unfolded with this chant and a full-sized guillotine in Portland, I was putting final touches on my forthcoming book, Rage and the Republic: The Unfinished Story of the American Revolution. The book, published by Simon & Schuster, will be released in 2026 as part of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. It explores the American and French Revolutions and why one became the most stable democracy in the world and the other became the blood-soaked “Terror.”

The appearance of guillotines is becoming commonplace in protests by the left. From protests against Trump to those against Israel, the symbol of the Terror is being rolled out as a warning to those with opposing views: “We got the guillotineyou better run.”

It is the ultimate expression of an age of rage. There is no question that it is protected speech. However, it is part of what I have called “rage rhetoric,” and it is meant to inflame others. It suggests that the only solution to these issues is what the French called “the razor of the Republic.”

In the French Revolution, the irony is that those who turned the guillotine into the symbol of revolution were themselves beheaded on the same platforms. Robespierre and others would ultimately be dispatched in the same atmosphere of rage and revelry.

As my new book discusses, most revolutions are driven by establishment figures who seek to capitalize on the wave of popular rage to gain power. We are seeing that today with many Democratic leaders using rage rhetoric to appeal to the far extremes of their political bases.

Former Republican Rep. Adam Kinzinger called on people to get ready to “take to the streets” because the political system is failing them. (This is the same Adam Kinzinger who previously denounced Trump and others for reckless rhetoric: “Look, violent rhetoric is wrong, and has no place. But MAGA pretending they didn’t light this fire is gaslighting to the 100th power.”).

California Governor Gavin Newsom declared, “I’m going to punch these sons of bitches in the mouth.” It follows other violent rhetoric from Democratic leaders. 

One House member explained that there is a “sense of fear and despair and anger” among voters that “puts us in a different position where … we can’t keep following norms of decorum.” One House Democrat told Axios, “Some of them have suggested … what we really need to do is be willing to get shot.” House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D., N.Y.) posted a picture brandishing a baseball bat.

Yet another admitted that constituents have told them to prepare for “violence … to fight to protect our democracy.” Others reported that liberals are talking about the need “to storm the White House and stuff like that.”

One explained that “They’re angry beyond things.” Another said, “It’s like … the Roman coliseum. People just want more and more of this spectacle.”

Some are discussing triggering or staging violence. One member said, “What I have seen is a demand that we get ourselves arrested intentionally or allow ourselves to be victims of violence, and … a lot of times that’s coming from economically very secure white people.”

In one encounter, a lawmaker told Axios: “I actually said in a meeting, ‘When they light a fire, my thought is to grab an extinguisher’. And someone at the table said, ‘Have you tried gasoline?’”

Some have. Protesters are burning cars, dealerships, and even lawyers and reporters on the left are throwing Molotov cocktails at police. We have also seen a massive increase in attacks on ICE officers, who are now covering their faces to avoid doxxing or retaliation against themselves or their families.

In the end, today’s pseudo-revolutionaries are likely to find themselves tomorrow’s reactionaries. Leading mobs is rarely a safe place to be as more radical elements take hold of a movement. The result is an inexorable pattern that runs throughout history as revolution devours its own.

These Democrats are not the descendants of prior generations of Democrats, they are the direct continuation of the same old racist bigots that caused a war when they did not get their way. They are the Party of the Regulators, the White Liners and the Klan. When the Democrats did not get their way they sent those paramilitary groups into the streets and countryside to intimidate and carry out violence. Left to themselves, the Democrats created Jim Crow Laws, red limning and segregation always with the implied threat of violence. Undoubtedly, the Democrats viewed themselves as carrying out their revolution on Q.T. Violence and the threat of violence has always been part and parcel of the Democratic Party. This is not new. Do not buckle to their threats and tantrums as that is exactly what they are counting on.

    1. France was never a ‘beacon of freedom’. France is merely an example of a country/people that wanted change and had no long term goals or plans to achieve those goals. I didn’t see the professor talk about Trump supporters building gallows during the Jan 6 rioting and the constant talk of civil war from the right when Biden or Obama were in office.

      What we do know is that it was a work of art, not a working gallows that could have been used to hang anyone. And that it was intended to be perceived as a symbolic statement, just like these guillotines.

      Remember that hanging people in effigy is an honored tradition in the history of protest in America.

      1. @Millhouse: I believe the “gallows” was only maybe a 1/3 sized prop…not large enough to hang even a dwarf. Much of the media avoided showing it with the nearby people so the scale could not be noted.

  7. It’s worth remembering that Jefferson and the Founders – with the exception of Thomas Paine – were absolutely horrified by the French Revolution. As for the rest of us, forewarned is forearmed – as the aristos who sympathized with the “republicans” learned to their sorrow, there is no making common cause with lunatics.

  9. Apocalyptic descriptions of the Soviet Democrats’ political street theater in Marxist controlled major cities is a bit of an attention grabber that will earn a few clicks. We don’t see that political theater being organized, funded, and carried out in the vast majority of American cities… there is a reason for that. Probably also not a reason for not pointing that out in an opinion piece.

    This is still America. A very well armed America, where very few who choose to exercise their Second Amendment rights are Democrats, much less those either directing and paying for or participating in the political street theater. Those exercising their Second Amendment rights are also those most likely to have served in the military in combat arms over the last 40 years and having taken part in fighting those wars.

    If the Soviet Democrats ever DO decide to unleash their streetthugs and actually act out their rage and hatred in the everyday cities of America, in states like Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Texas, etc, the most likely response is going to be “Do you accept appointments to come here and make house calls?”

    Does anyone think they’re naive enough to bet their lives on the response they’ll get if they ever leave the safety of Portland, Seattle, Washington DC, New York, etc?

    The last thing those of us who fought through foreign cities overseas want to see here in America is that same destruction and chaos right here at home – one reason WWII politicians and veterans who fought in that war set up NATO (and remain guiding NATO) is those WWII politicians and veterans didn’t want to fight any future war against the USSR on OUR streets. We wanted to fight it on the land and cities of our European allies, among their civilian populations – far better than doing that here in America, among our homes and families.

    Americans will not tolerate immediate threats to their families, even if some distant politicians living in safety will. Whether the threat is external or here on the streets where our homes are and where our kids and grand-kids play.

  13. We’ve had many a violent riot in our nation’s past. The only difference this time around is an ensconced progressive cadre that has taken too lenient a tact when dealing with the current cause de jour. Even Eisenhower and Kennedy had sent in National Guard troops to quell riots and protest because they knew that the continuation of The Rule of Law was imperative in order to maintain a control over civilian actions when they cause potential or real harm to citizens.

    The progressive view that they peddle; is that unrest is a result of oppressive application of the rule of law is the main reason for said unrest. That is categorically wrong in that those with grievances should be made aware of the cause of, let’s say inordinate arrests of blacks in a community, was not because of being black, but acting in inappropriate manner because of a fault within the culture of the black community.

    How many are old enough to remember pre-welfare America? If you are, you can attest to the fact that it wasn’t until there was a seismic shift in culture that arrived with The Great Society legislation where the government became the focus of our needs and wants rather than that of ourselves and our communities. Now if there is a problem we look to a large entity – whether a political party, a religious group or governmental agency as the source rather than taking individual assessment of the closer cause of our disfunction.

    Now the very source of so much of our nation’s discontent (the progressive political left) have turned to the last remaining tool in their box to maintain power and are using the threat of danger and lethality to attempt to recapture their power. It is deplorable and pernicious and will, undoubtedly, lead to general chaos if a strong message is not sent that such behavior will not be tolerated and there WILL BE consequences. Only the use of force at that point will this cease, but the progressives have moved this paradigm to such a point that now there will, also, be pain and loss in order to restore order and safety.

The rest of us just look at them with a side glance and say, “Whatever.” They really think there is some kind of threat, and they are going to rise up and fight for our country. Guess what, loser.     Take the No Kings Day, protests. Looking at the videos, the majority of them were old, white people. Really think people like Dennis, are an actual threat? So, go ahead and tout that guillotine around and spout off your hate and rage. Only makes you look dumber.

  15. Professor Turley missed one example – in what was once England, trans activists display guillotines along with banners bearing the exhortation “Decapitate All TERFs!”

    And this, apparently, is entirely lawful, while a tweet suggesting women, when confronted by a ball-bearing male in a “females only” space, make a scene or call the police, and, “if all else fails, punch him in the balls.” Note that there is no individual identified. Even trans, as such, are not all included – only those males encroaching on women’s spaces.

    Once there was a magazine called The New Yorker (there is an entirely different publication now using that name), and it had a little recurring item among the gems filling spaces at the end of features, “There’ll Always Be An England,” little idiosyncratic and utterly #English absurdities.

    That England, alas, is as extinct as The New Yorker. Sigh.

  16. All of this because they lost an election. The Left forgets that the Right is well armed. Some on the Left have armed up but I’m not sure they really understand what they face. Since so much of the people out there in the left have no concept of history, they fail to see where this is leading them.
    The Left right now is the wealthy who pay for the for and subsidize the movement. Those in the streets are simply the cannon fodder that will fill the streets with their bodies when confrontation gets violent.
    The most likely time for the US to have had a revolution (since the civil war) was during the depression but it never happened and Viet Nam never tipped off a revolution even with all the support on some college campuses.
    The depression forged the nation that won world war 2 and Viet Nam led to Nixon-Ford-Reagan-HW Bush with a light breather with Carter.
    If I were Trump and the DOJ I would focus on the Financiers of the Rent-A-Mobs and put them under pressure or out of action. Then where would the mob rental business go. You then have to systematically remove their tentacles from education, finance and other aspects of modern America. Probably through the tax code, and ending public unions, and installing national right to work
    A nice, really smart AI could probably reveal the whole seething mass of money movement under the surface. Turn over the rock and see what you find. DOGE was only a start.

  17. It’s remarkable how quickly we jump to apocalyptic descriptions when discussing something like this. The left has run out of policies and people that anyone might care to support, and so their last resort is to display rage in ways designed to shock us. But it’s folly. That guillotine looked real but was fake, just as the promises of the left. There is no ideology, per se, among most demonstrators. Most are useful idiots hoping to meet kindred spirits and share a sandwich or two, or, if really lucky, make it into the evening news or TikTok, where they might become famous.. To be sure, there are managing idiots behind them who are being sponsored by the usual anti-American funding sources like George Soros and the Teachers’ Unions, aka Communes. Most are losers trying to save face by defining capitalism and conservatives as the “enemy,” when, in fact, the enemy is their own stupidity. Turley gives them more credit than they deserve. At least the French “terrorists” had a plan and an ideology of sorts. Like our modern-day losers, it didn’t work, and they lost their heads in the end.

      We don’t have those recall elections. However, we DO have the previous president, Bribery Joe Biden, who was allowed to go free on return to work probation rather than being charged. He’s no longer working, and that parole can be revoked at any time and indictments filed. How about “there should be an indictment of my father (now referred to as ‘The Oval Office House Plant’) for corruption, tax fraud, influence peddling and bribery… and then an impeachment of him while he’s out of power. Just like we did to Trump after he left office.
