“I Believe that Creature is a Changeling”: Hillary Clinton and the Lose of Shame in American Politics

Charlotte Bronte once wrote “I believe that creature is a changeling: she is a perfect cabinet of oddities.” No quote better captured the chilling curiosity that is Hillary Clinton. This week, Clinton (without any sign of shame or self-awareness) attacked others for seeking censorship and blacklisting political opponents through government and corporate collaboration. Clinton is one of the most anti-free speech figures in the United States and actively campaigned for the censorship of opponents. Today, my column in the Hill discusses the hypocrisy of many on the left this week after the suspension of late-night host Jimmy Kimmel. However, there is simply no one in the same class as Clinton in hitting hypocrisy’s rock bottom.

This week, Clinton declared: “I think this is a very clear example of using the power of the state to suppress speech. It is a direct government action to try to intimidate employers, organizations, corporations, much of which we’ve already seen, to remove an opponent, even though it’s a comic.”

For many in the free speech community, the statement led us to spit out our morning coffee.

Clinton and her allies have long shown contempt for the intelligence of the voters, often denying facts or flipping positions while denying any inconsistencies. It was a record that produced not only polling as one of the least popular American politicians but also record lows in the public’s view of trustworthiness and authenticity. Clinton’s campaign routinely lied about major issues, including denying to the media that it funded the infamous Steele dossier.

For the record, I have repeatedly criticized Administration statements from recently on free speech and some of the actions taken against critics as threatening to our core values of free speech. This has included threats to prosecute hate speech and flag burning despite countervailing precedent. However, the last person any of us in the free speech community wants to see in this fight is Hillary Clinton.

As I have previously written, Clinton heralded the growing anti-free speech movement and noted that “there are people who are championing it, but it’s been a long and difficult road to getting anything done.”

In my book, I discuss the challenge for anti-free speech champions like Clinton is that it is not easy to convince a free people to give up their freedom.

That is why figures like Clinton are going “old school” and turning to government or corporations to crack down on citizens. One of the lowest moments came after Elon Musk acquired Twitter, promising to restore free speech protections. Clinton called upon European officials to force Elon Musk to censor American citizens under the infamous Digital Services Act (DSA). This is a former democratic presidential nominee calling upon Europeans to push the censorship of Americans.

Clinton praised the anti-free speech efforts in California and New York and called for the rest of the country to replicate the approach of those states.

Clinton added a particularly illuminating line that said the quiet part out loud. This is all about power and the fear that she and others will “lose control” over speech:

“Whether it’s Facebook or Twitter or X or Instagram or TikTok, whatever they are, if they don’t moderate and monitor the content, we lose total control and it’s not just the social and psychological effects it’s real harm, it’s child porn and threats of violence, things that are terribly dangerous.”

Clinton continues to offer a textbook example of the anti-free speech narrative. While seeking sweeping censorship for anything deemed disinformation, Clinton cites specific examples that are already barred under federal law like child porn.

Not surprisingly, when I spoke in Berlin on free speech, Hillary Clinton also spoke to call for greater speech limits to a highly appreciative European audience. She has been a major voice in fostering the government-corporate alliance that carried out massive censorship of political opponents.

As Bronte noted, this “creature is a changeling: she is a perfect cabinet of oddities.” Fortunately, the public has never been deceived by the changeling. They have always seen her opportunistic attacks as a sign of contempt for them as a bunch of chumps. Both Clinton and the media have learned in prior elections that these narratives are falling flat with most Americans outside of the core Democratic base.

There has to be some lingering residue of shame left; some modicum of decency in refraining from such raw hypocrisy at these moments. Yet, we seem to be living in an era of post-shame politics. The only thing missing is lawyer Joseph Welch:

  1. Chapter 1……..The Transition of Hillary Clinton into the Ultra Leftist/New Reactionary.. a Transformation so mind-boggling.. an Enigma that leaves one truly perplexed…. the Clintons were the ‘new’ JFK Democrat ‘Light’ when they came to Power…then.. slowly….. the descent… yet even up to the entrance of Obama they held on, vehemently opposed to Obama & what he stood for… then.. o BAM a.. it was all downhill.. and deeper into the Deep State.. (Read the well-researched ‘Clinton Cash’ by Peter Schweizer) and their lightening fast conversion during the Obama.years.. onward to 2016.. carrying on the way beyond Watergate Dirty Tricks activity now with seasonedsoroscash, and, sealed with the contamination of the Bernie Sanders BS……………….. thus the launch of Hillary as a Deep State standard bearer.. and the Clintons’ once good friend & donor DT now cast as the dragon… Chapter 2 in process……………..

  2. When late-night TV became Left-night TV, the hosts were no longer funny or entertaining, at least half their audience disappeared, and their propagandizing had no meaningful effect on the politics of the voters as a whole. All that money wasted, all the opportunities for brining America together à la Johnny Carson or Jay Leno wasted. It’s a shame. And for what?

  3. Here Are Final Late Night Ratings for Q1 2025
    By Jed Rosenzweig
    APRIL 15, 2025

At 11:35pm, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert once again took the top spot, with Jimmy Kimmel Live! coming in second among total viewers and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon edging out Kimmel among viewers in the demo. Compared to Q4, all three 11:35pm shows saw similar decreases of -7 to -8% among total viewers; things were less even among younger viewers, with Fallon down -14%, Colbert slidding -17%, and Kimmel posting the greatest losses at -24%.

  4. No billionaires have stepped up to suggest and fund a lawsuit by Jimmy Kimmel’s against ABC.
Kimmel isnt serious because he hasnt filed a lawsuit against ABC. File a lawsuit or STFU

Disney’s Decision to Fire Gina Carano

Carano’s exile began in early 2021. After the second season of The Mandalorian, Lucasfilm labeled her social media posts “abhorrent and unacceptable.” Carano had compared the treatment of conservatives to how neighbor turned against neighbor in WW2-era Germany. She also reportedly resisted pressure from Lucasfilm to list pronouns in her bio.

The fallout was severe. Disney terminated her contract, scrapped a spinoff series centered on her Cara Dune character, and her talent agency cut ties. What followed was a near-complete Hollywood freeze-out, with Carano herself describing the aftermath as a coordinated blacklist.

  5. The is no crime so heinous as to be beyond the capacity of a drug addict. This almost everyone knows. Hillary Clinton is addicted to power, money, and celebrity. And, as she has demonstrated repeatedly, she is unhampered by any respect for decency, operating with the same lack of shame and credibility as any other strung-out desperado. She is a national disgrace, and so are her enablers.

  6. From the standpoint of having an atmosphere favorable to Republicans in coming elections beating Democrats like they’re evil little red-headed stepchildren, the last thing I want to happen is for vile, obvious liars and hypocrites like Clinton, Kimmel, et al for any reason (including incompetence and the failure of your show) stopped from commenting, posting, having their shows, etc.

I’m happy that the Democrats here defending and deflecting from those liars wanting these stars of their party right out there in front as the face of the Democrat party!

Happy to have that as what Republicans run against in coming elections!

  7. ABC is caving. Reports this morning indicate that ABC and Kimmel are in talks to bring back the show as soon as possible. I suspect that ABC Execs are telling the carriers like Sinclair and others to get in board or lose ALL ABC programming.

    1. @Michael

Does anyone beyond the fringe care? Were you watching him? I wasn’t. I don’t think there has ever been in history a bigger bunch of entitled crybabies than the modern dems. If they want to light money on fire, let them, though I doubt they will, ultimately; I tend toward the opinion that his ratings sucked, he was headed for the same fate as Colbert, he likely knew, and because Kimmel is an emotional midget, he did it all on purpose. Whatever.

The rest of us move on, and without them. People like him don’t concern me, he is a wealthy tool; people that still listen to his puppetry do. I am almost at the point where I think the prejudice predating the civil rights movement was tame by comparison to these globalist morons and whatever ‘vote blue no matter who’ morons that are in mindless lockstep. It’s truly unreal.

  8. Dear Prof Turley,

I’m at a ‘loss’. Other than a few preening, pompous, clinging Euro Trash .. . who gives a furry rat’s behind what Hillary says about anything?

This message is approved by president DJT. And that’s what matters, presently. .. ty for your attention to this matter.

Presently, this country is the Hottest country in the world.. . and that’s what we should be talking about.

*not a lot of ‘oversight’ going on at the Oversight Committees . ..

    1. Sorry DG
Sometimes you need to fight back. Kash is doing a great job.
Remember when Schumer threaten our Supreme court. Loons like yourself said zip or supported it.
Suck it up butter cup. Thanks have changed.

    1. ^^& the changeling is a common thief with uncommon huge opportunity but no one does anything about her. She loots the US and then leaves. Over and over…

  9. “Clinton and her allies have long shown contempt for the intelligence of the voters, often denying facts or flipping positions while denying any inconsistencies. ”

And her voters deserve every bit of contempt that she gives them. As does anybody still voting for Democrats.

    1. Q. What’s the difference between a Democrat and a Republican?

*answer. one is a scum-sucking bottom dweller, and the other is a FISH

    1. “trump said that if they talk bad about him, that is illegal speech. Everyone OK with that?”

Trump did not say that while condemning the Democrats’ propagandists in the media lying about him. It is a lie to claim he did.

Clearly you’re okay with attempting that lie as the media was okay with attempting their lies during the 2016, 2020, and 2024 elections.

How do you think that lie is going to work out for you here?

    2. Trump can say whatever he wants.

That said – no one beleives what YOU say.

Wolf, Wolf, Wolf, when there was no wolf.

Now the wolf has come and it is feasting on our bones.

    3. Actually, in the US one can criticize the President’s policies with decorum. The President himself is not maligned.

There are no words for Obama’s rabble. It defies description. Changeling is a good attempt.

Do a good and honest job of good will when at task. That’s all it takes.

      1. Did you forget when PREZ (o-DUMBER) used the IRS to kill free speech. I do, it was the IRS to shut down the Tea-party.
        Under his orders.

  10. From Matthew 14:

3 For Herod had arrested and imprisoned John as a favor to his wife Herodias (the former wife of Herod’s brother Philip). 4 John had been telling Herod, “It is against God’s law for you to marry her.” 5 Herod wanted to kill John, but he was afraid of a riot, because all the people believed John was a prophet.

6 But at a birthday party for Herod, Herodias’s daughter performed a dance that greatly pleased him, 7 so he promised with a vow to give her anything she wanted. 8 At her mother’s urging, the girl said, “I want the head of John the Baptist on a tray!” 9 Then the king regretted what he had said; but because of the vow he had made in front of his guests, he issued the necessary orders. 10 So John was beheaded in the prison, 11 and his head was brought on a tray and given to the girl, who took it to her mother. 12 Later, John’s disciples came for his body and buried it. Then they went and told Jesus what had happened.

  11. The REAL Crisis for the left is NOT Kimmel’s firing.
Or the firing of various professors.

    It is what that MEANS.
Which is why it is critical for them to “recontectualize”
to make themselves the victims of first amendment violations.

It is unlikely that these professors or Kimmel would have been fired as little as two years ago.
Turley has written repeatedly of professors whose conduct was more egregious who experienced do conduct – or none until they went after someone with a machette.

Yet, NOW left wing nuts are being fired – often by others on the left
This is happening not because colleges or ABC or Disney have decided they went too far.
It is not happening because they have crossed some new line – gone too far.

All that is happening is those on the left are NOW being held accountable for bad conduct that they were not held accountable before.

Why ? Because “the people” are finally FED UP. Because “the people” are finaly acting.
Before they elected Trump, they punished Anheiser Busch, and John Deere, and Harley Davidson.

What little trust people have of the left – is gone.

The left is ranting hypocritically about free speech When the people are telling the Woke Left – we do not want you teaching our kids, or polluting our airwaves.
We do not want your nonsense.
We do not want Trans beer.
We do not want DEI racism.

Was Kimmel fired for his remarks ? Because FCC Carr tepidly threatened ABC ? Because Trump suggested he be fired ? Or because his ratings sucked and he was losing money ?

    We can argue for hours.

But what should be crystal clear is that barring a miracle – Kimmel was history.
If not today, then tomorow, or the next day.

With near certainty he was going to be fired because he said something stupid – just like Colbert.
But the BIG reason he was fired – was he was losing money.
And the reason he was losing money is there is no longer an audience for left wing claptrap large enough to support these shows – or even whole networks.

The left rants that professors are being fired for free speech.

I suggest that LEFT WING college presidents and administrators grasp that their institutions are way to far to the left – not as a matter of ideology but as a matter of attracting students, and parents, and donors. And that those colleges are using the stupid remarks of various professors as the means to cull the most extreme and move the balance in a direction that appeals more to students and parents and donors.

And it is THAT, that has the left terrified right now.

I do not think Kirk’s assassination is a “Turning Point”. But I do think it is publicly exposing that general tolerance for the left has declined dramatically.

The left MUST paint all of this as a Trump driven violation of their rights.
Because the reality that public support for the left has radically eroded is so much worse.

With specific respect to Trump – Trump has NEVER been a leader – what he is is the most politically attune political surfer that we have ever had. Many have noted the incredible political abilities of Bill Clinton – But Trump is far better. He senses political waves when they are miles from shore and no one else sees them, He is up on his board, ready to catch the leading edge long before others no there is a wave.

    1. John Say – I think your analysis about what this all “means” is a accurate. It’s a good point.

  12. *. Oh God, now they’re destroying the interior of St. Patrick’s Cathedral with the horrible wall “art” they do. Spray paint next? Tag it.

    Fight, fight, fight…

    1. I am presuming you are refering to the recent mural.

St. Patricks can do as it please within its church.
Further, I would EXPECT that the church would be supportive of immigrants – legal or otherwise – that is their job.
I have no problems with churches offering sanctuary, or providing aide to the less fortunate – no matter who they are.

      That is THEIR job.

My family – through various churches over the years has paid for, cooked and served thousands of meals – to the homeless, or to people who just need a little help.

Postive morality is an individual obligation.

It is NOT however the job of govenrment.

      1. That may be all true, John Say, and your virtue stands alone. These are permanent paintings within an historical cathedral and the architecture does not lend itself to the style.

As you say, it is the church’s decision, the diocese? A pity , a pity…

      2. Perhaps lady liberty would be better if she were clad in Bermuda shorts carrying her luggage. Replace that crown with a ball cap.

        A pity…

They cheated out in the artistry little better than graffiti. Wth are those dripping golden rays.

Perhaps the archdiocese should pay taxes. It’s the biggest landowner in 🗽NYC. It’s a Gothic Revival syle…

        Ah, virtue. Ah, money…

        1. *. ^^^ cheaped out. Not cheated out.

😂 what an eyesore in a Gothic revival building. The archdiocese didn’t even have the interest to pre-approve the cartoons.

Dolan requested 60 million to be put aside for improper conduct and lawsuits. Could have gotten Michelangelo for that price.

Anyway John Say, historical preservation is a thing. That’s a daggone nimbus on Liberty’s head.

      3. John Say, I was censored. Btw I said nothing about the content of the sprawling murals.

Is it true Dolan requested 60 million set aside for priestly indiscretions?

Ya gotta laugh with the postage stamp style of the lamb. I’d want to walk through that mess for my wedding.

        Historical preservation is the topic.

  13. I agree completely with these comments and assessment of Hillary Clinton. She was so very bad, dishonest, manipulative etc. throughout her political career. We are fortunate that she never made it to top level.

  14. What is a Democrat?
How many classifications of a Democrat are there: Anarchist, Communist, Socialist, Democratic Socialist, illegal immigrant, criminal, and of course all classes of democrats worship at the feet of Epimenides, which I’ll modify in terms of the modern age ‘all statements made by Democrats are false’.

I’ll go a little further in a Democrats description, tyrant, assassin, self-righteous (pharisaic) in the belief The Declaration of Independence, The Constitution and more so the Bills of Rights should be treated as an idea with their purported implications.

In addition to the above they’re incapable of showing repentance; Kimmel is just the latest example.

These fools must be shown the door to irrelevance; they should take any door they find on the road to HELL before the FIRES of hell consume them.

  15. With Democrats(sic) and the Clintons, there is never a “rock bottom”. There is always yet another, lower level of subbasements of thuggery and depravity.

  16. And Gov. JB Pritzker, who now wants boycotts of ABC and Disney, said two years ago on CNN: “You have a right to free speech, but you don’t have a right to lie.” He went on: “There ought to be a private right of action for anybody that’s dissuaded or told something that’s false, that’s the important thing. What they say to people, that’s fine, as long as what they’re doing isn’t deceptive. And we have laws against that. It’s fraud in our state and we’re going to prosecute people for that.”

  17. How on Earth is the hideous lump of completely discredited semi-human offal that calls itself Hillary Clinton rate this much column space? Is that solely up to Prof. Turley? Absolutely, this blog is his property. Nevertheless it appears to be a legitimate question to ask.

    1. Clinton is a near perfect mirror for the left today.

      That is why.

What Turley says of Clinton – applies quite well to the rest of the left.

    2. Anon @1:01
The answer to your question is very, very simple.
Turley is desperately trying to avoid talking about the Jimmy Kimmel matter.
This blog is supposedly devoted to the defense of free speech, but apparently he is not willing to defend speech that is critical of the Trump administration.

Instead he is just shovelling chum to the MAGA mob as a distraction to keep them inflamed about other stupid, irrelevant issues.

      1. “Instead he is just shovelling chum to the MAGA mob as a distraction to keep them inflamed about other stupid, irrelevant issues.”

Speaking of the use of chum… are you going to next claim the only reason you Bolshevik Boys are here every day to defend Democrat orthodoxy (like celebrating murder) is only because every day Professor Turley throws lines out that trolls you from the Democrat depths of human depravity?

      2. The Kimmel Matter is trivial.

Kimmel lied on TV – he defamed millions of people, as well as the dead.

He was already toast because his ratings were in the tank.
But he made himself instant PNG.

Did Trump demand his firing ? Absolutely.
Did millions of people ? Yup.
Were Sinclair and Nexstar overrun with complaints ? Yup.
Was Iger facing a billion dollar lawsuit ?
Did Kimmel refuse to apologize for false statement ? Absolutely.
Did Kimmel double down ? Absolutely.

Regardless, Kimmel was gone long before he went on stage and defamed half the country.
He was gone when his already bad ratings tanked in January.

The only question was WHEN he was leaving.
People left and right are now talking about who is next ? The View ? …. ?

The answer is simple – the left wing MSM must either do something to appeal to a much larger audience, or cut costs to the point that it is no longer losing money hand over fist.

Either way that means LOTS of left wing nuts in the MSM are either headed out the door, or taking huge pay cuts.

Bezos has been telling those at WaPo the same for YEARS.

Those of you on the left have not been listening.

You are too busy biting the hand that feeds you.

        1. As usual, John Say obfuscates, deflects and rambles incoherently without understanding the issue.

The issue is not whether Kimmel lied. He is perfectly free to say whatever he wants. Trump lies on a daily basis. If Kimmel defames someone then he can be sued.
However, as you repeatedly point out, the First Amendment prohibits the GOVERNMENT from punishing someone for exercising their right to free speech.
The issue is that Trump demanded that he be fired for daring to exercise his First Amendment right to free speech. Trump has also said it is “illegal” for TV personalities to criticize him.
This is a classic example of the government suppressing free speech.
          THAT IS THE ISSUE !!!!!

The other nonsense you bring up about ratings, and potential lawsuits, and alleged complaints is completely and utterly irrelevant to the matter. You are simply trying to rationalize the illegal actions of the Trump administration.

This is an absolute violation of Kimmel’s First Amendment rights by the government.

      3. Turley is desperately trying to avoid talking about the Jimmy Kimmel matter.
This blog is supposedly devoted to the defense of free speech, but apparently he is not willing to defend speech that is critical of the Trump administration.

Chump Kimmel can be critical of Trump-or anyone else his little heart desires to be critical of- just NOT on ABC (a private corporation, NOT gov!).
        Next question Junior🥰
