“We May Be Nearing” when “the Resistance Looks Completely Different”: Democrat Leaders Ramp Up Resistance Rhetoric

Despite calls for many Democratic politicians and pundits to temper their inflammatory rhetoric, this week has proven a further escalation in this dangerous form of rage rhetoric. DNC Chair Ken Martin just told MSNBC’s “The Beat” that “we may be nearing” the moment when “elections don’t matter and then the resistance looks completely different.” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called on people to “forcefully rise up.” With political violence on the rise, these leaders are clearly fueling the mob in hopes that they and their party can ride the wave of rage back into power.  History suggests that it is a foolish delusion. Today’s revolutionaries quickly become tomorrow’s reactionaries.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., who pictures himself brandishing a baseball bat has previously called upon people to “fight in the streets.”

California Governor Gavin Newsom previously declared, “I’m going to punch these sons of bitches in the mouth.”

Virginia Democratic gubernatorial nominee Abigail Spanberger  called upon her supporters to “Let your rage fuel you.” She then refused to withdraw her support for the Democratic candidate for Attorney General, Jay Jones, who once expressed his desire to kill his political opponents and his children.

In his podcast with co-host Al Hunt, James Carville was again spewing unhinged hate. He returned to treating Trump and others as Nazis and their supporters as “collaborators.” I previously criticized Carville for that analogy. He later attacked me.

Doubling down, Carville declared

“You know what we do with collaborators? I think these corporations, my fantasy dream is that this nightmare ends in 2029 and I think we ought to have radical things. I think they all ought to have their heads shaven, they should be put in orange pajamas and they should be marched down Pennsylvania Avenue and the public should be invited to spit on them.”

To be sure that his menacing words were not lost, he then added “The universities, the corporations, the law firms, all of these collaborators should be shaved, pajamaed and spit on.”

There was no later push back by his co-host Hunt or anyone else associated with the podcast.

As one of those Carville has already attacked, I expect he has a haircut and public humiliation in mind for me and a significant number of others deemed insufficiently committed to the resistance.

Even with the assassination of Charlie Kirk and the attempts on Trump and Justice Brett Kavanaugh, these politicians and pundits are still fueling the madness. Even with the sniper attack on ICE officers, they are still calling these law enforcement officers “Gestapo” and “Nazis.”

In my book, “The Indispensable Right: Free Speech in an Age of Rage, I write about rage and the uncomfortable truth for many engaging in rage rhetoric:

“What few today want to admit is that they like it. They like the freedom that it affords, the ability to hate and harass without a sense of responsibility. It is evident all around us as people engage in language and conduct that they repudiate in others. We have become a nation of rage addicts, flailing against anyone or anything that stands in opposition to our own truths. Like all addictions, there is not only a dependency on rage but an intolerance for opposing views. … Indeed, to voice free speech principles in a time of rage is to invite the rage of the mob.”

The appearance of guillotines has become commonplace in left-wing protests. From protests against Trump to those against Israel, the symbol of the Terror is being rolled out as a warning to those with opposing views: “We got the guillotineyou better run.”

It is the ultimate expression of an age of rage. There is no question that it is protected speech. However, it is part of what I have called “rage rhetoric,” and it is meant to inflame others. It suggests that the only solution to these issues is what the French called “the razor of the Republic.”

In the French Revolution, the irony is that those who turned the guillotine into the symbol of revolution were themselves beheaded on the same platforms. Robespierre and others would ultimately be dispatched in the same atmosphere of rage and revelry.

As my new book discusses, most revolutions are driven by establishment figures who seek to capitalize on the wave of popular rage to gain power. We are seeing that today with many Democratic leaders using rage rhetoric to appeal to the far extremes of their political bases.

Some have. Protesters are burning cars, dealerships, and even lawyers and reporters on the left are throwing Molotov cocktails at police.

In the end, today’s pseudo-revolutionaries are likely to find themselves tomorrow’s reactionaries. Leading mobs is rarely a safe place to be as more radical elements take hold of a movement. The result is an inexorable pattern that runs throughout history as revolution devours its own.

  1. Democrat Pols like Schumer better realize that if their actions cause violence against Christians, Republicans, Conservatives that it is a 2 way street and they and their families will be held responsible for that violence.

  2. I’m old now. Not much time left. I have useful skills and the will to apply them. And I’m one of many.

You will.meet us if you continue down this road. As you have throughout history.

  3. It’s the desperation of a party whose crimes are going to put a good many of them in jail. They stole trillions, enriched themselves, stole elections. I guess if they want a civil war they can have it. It won’t be pretty for them.

    1. I don’t see how it’s not necessary at this point. They are going to ramp it up until they are punished, then they’ll use that as an excuse to become even worse examples of human beings.

  4. Thanks to Carville and his Boy Clinton we got our economy arc-welded to China. China executes people with less concern than we do animals at the dog pound. They did exactly what Carville advocates to the last people practicing journalism in Hong Kong and the Biden administration said nothing (Boy Biden of course OWNED by CCP). Did you all forget the biggest bailout ever that came 10 years after Clinton got bank deregulation passed? Did yu enjoy ZERO (really negative CD rates on your savings for 10 years). Every time I see Clintonites like Carville and Reich whining about inequality (that was made much worse by THEIR policies) I feel nauseous. The self-absorption of these types should qualify for inclusion in that DSM0-5 psych book of recognized mental disorders.

      1. That old decrepit wannabe important still is not only physically ill, he is also spiritually ill. It’s written on his face. Look at him.

  5. What is wrong with the democrats?
Why are they escalating their acts of intolerance into violence?
Are the rest of us going to be forced to carry firearms for personal safety?
They are destroying our society’s sense of civilized behavior and moral expectations…

  6. Democrats sound just like the Confederacy. California, Washington, Oregon and Illinois are seeking to separate from the Union by not obeying federal law. This is a Fort Sumter movement and Trump should not flinch. He should arrest the Confederates for obstruction of federal law and sedition

  7. I’ve been practicing for the day when you libs do get violent-will be a sad day for every Democrat politician in this country too because I’m not the only one-Follow the
Law and leave others alone-don’t wake the sleeping dog

  8. The reason for the panic is – in Washington people are about to lose their jobs. Much, most technical work in government can and will in the near future be done by AI. So think of the economic base there being sliced in half. Thus, panic from all sides. What they miss, however, the more technology replace handcraft, the more people gain. How so? We do not know. We don’t know the future but must accept it. We’ve gotten this far.

  9. The strategy of using the inflamatory rhetoric is to incite rioting and attacks o the stree that the leftist media will brand as “chaos” caused by DOnal Trump. They have used this at Charlotssville, also during his campaigns and , of course, at the fedsurrection.

  10. Unfortunately, I see that ugly R word getting closer and closer to reality. Stock up on dehydrated survival food, water, and ammunition. I think we’re going to need it. I don’t want to be an alarmist, but I’m reading the tea leaves and they’re not looking good. Fortunately, our side has most of the guns and the expertise to use them. I’m ready, willing, and able to dispatch any hooligans or miscreants who think I’m an easy target.

  11. Crapocrats are very unhappy and awwwwwwwwwwwww. We have the most popular president we have had in YEARS, and that just burns their heinies every day LOL.

  12. The rhetoric we are witnessing today is similar to the rhetoric the South used just prior to the Civil War. After all, it was a Southern newspaper that described Abraham Lincoln as a guerrilla. Another commonality between today and the pre-Civil War era is that it was democrats spewing such hatred.

  13. I do not think people are surprised by the hatred of the socialist Democrats. The Democrats started the first Civil War by firing on federal troops. The reason they did that was because they wanted to keep their right to have slaves. Now they are wanting to start another civil war For the same reasons.
The main problem with Democrats is that they do not care what the majority want. They cannot be swayed by logic or public opinion. They are just like any other communist socialist country. If you look at the communist dictators all over the world, such as North Korea, China, Russia, Cuba, Venezuela, Iran, they are willing to sacrifice the general public in order to maintain their power. Americans know, in their heart that communist socialist will never change voluntarily. They will pretend to until they become so angered that they will start another war. That’s what they’re doing now, starting another war, Americans and better wake up and realize the only way to peace is to fight in the same way the enemy fights..You cannot cure a rabid dog by patting him on the head and giving him a bacon treat.

    1. The civil war started as a war about states rights and economics. Congress signed a bill increasing tariffs 30% which hurt the south and their trade with Britain- mainly cotton.

The war was really about industrialization in the north and agriculture in the south.

Only later did Lincoln make it about slavery. Only 10% of Americans owned slaves, people were not willing to die for slave owners.

  14. It’s true that revolutions tend to devour their own. Also they tend to devour quite a few of their enemies. The winners, if there are any, tend to be people that had never been heard about before.

But the thing is, it’s kind of late to realize that maybe it’s time to cool down. More than five years late. By the time that you have said that it’s OK for free speech during a deadly pandemic to include skepticism about the instructions of the doctors, and you haven’t been extraordinarily upset about having a political rally where people could get infected with a deadly virus (and almost certainly some were, and did die), you have effectively said that it’s OK for free speech to call openly for the four horsemen of the Apocalypse. So don’t be too surprised if the four horsemen actually come and destroy all that you hold dear. I understand why you ask people to cool down, but don’t be surprised if the calls aren’t heeded.

And don’t assume that the current government shutdown is ever going to end. Or to be more accurate, not while maintaining the current form of government.

    1. The Gain-of-function developed virus was fortunately not all that deadly. Only the most infirm were in major danger.from it. The hospital protocols, unfortunately, were more deadly. To criticize those that questioned the response at this point is to affirm that lies and collusion must be more important in the defense of authority than the lived of the proletariat.

    2. Trump won the primary campaign. Trump won the Electoral College, the popular vote, all seven swing states. There were a lot of irregularities in the 2020 election not the least of which was shutting down the swing state voting machines in the middle of the night. States Trump was winning by a wide margin. Harris was selected by Democrat Kings and Queens. No primary voting. Your side has corrupted the legal and judicial process. All the law fare against Trump is bs. Your side tried assassinating him. Twice.

    3. as Elmer Fudd once said to Bugs Bunny, “be vewy, vewy careful”. what you think you can do compared to “us” sparky just might not work out the way you think it might. the right my be quiet right now, but we carry a big stick. Bigger than yours.

  15. “Whoever incites, sets on foot, assists, or engages in any rebellion or insurrection against the authority of the United States or the laws thereof, or gives aid or comfort thereto, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than ten years, or both; and shall be incapable of holding any office under the United States.”

  16. James Carville is becoming increasingly unhinged as is the rest of his party. Ironically he is starting to sound like David Duke who was also on the LSU campus in the early 70’s. The extreme behavior of the Democrats is what happens when there is an expectation of no accountability which is the condition we find ourselves in today. There is nothing democratic about today’s Democrat Party. Expect violence to accompany the next election in ‘26 as voter intimidation becomes widespread.
