Baptist Minister (and former second vice president of the Souther Baptist Convention) Wiley Drake reportedly said that he is offering an “imprecatory prayer” for the death of President Obama.
Drake reportedly said on June 2 on “The Alan Colmes Show” that, unless Obama repents, he is praying for God to kill him — referencing the killing of Dr. George Tiller as an example of such divine retribution. Drake has his own program, “The Wiley Drake Show” on Crusade Radio, where he has been holding forth on Tiller’s murder. With Colmes, Drake said “I’ve been a Baptist pastor for a long time, been in the pro-life fight, been face-to-face with Tiller, told him about Jesus, and I’ve seen many, many others tell him about Jesus over and over and over again. And I’ve seen horrific things that go on in those death abortuaries — and that’s what they are — and so my initial response to those people, they said, ‘Well what was your response,’ and I said, ‘Well, in all honesty I have to just respond directly and say I am glad that he’s dead.’”
Drake repeated the view that Obama (who he refers to as “B. Hussein Obama”) is not an American-born citizen and called him a “usurper.” Drake was praised in extremist websites after he filed to block Obama from taking the oath of office. He also said that Rev. Rick Warren would be punished by God for offering a prayer at the inauguration.
An “imprecatory prayer” is usually a reference to Psalm 35 where David calls upon the Lord to kill his enemies. There are a variety of imprecatory psalms containing curses or prayers for the punishment and death for one’s enemies. Psalms 7, 35, 55, 58, 59, 69, 79, 109, 137 and 139.
Drake is a big believer in death-dealing prayers . . . and he is not afraid to use them. Previously, he called for the use of imprecatory prayers against a religious watchdog group. He was upset over an IRS investigation. On August 14th he wrote:
In light of the recent attack from the enemies of God I ask the children of God to go into action with Imprecatory Prayer. Especially against Americans United for Separation of Church and State. I made an attempt to go to them via Matt 18:15 but they refused to talk to me. Specifically target Joe Conn or Jeremy Learing. They are those who lead the attack. (You can see their press release attack at www.au.org )
Imprecatory prayer, is now our duty
Now that all efforts have been exhausted, we must begin our Imprecatory Prayer, at the key points of the parliamentary role in the earth where we live.
John Calvin gave the church its marching orders from Scripture. The righteous have dominion, but only through imprecatory prayer against the ungodly.
David as our Old Testament shepherd gives us many Imprecatory prayers, and can be found to be in best focus in Psalm 109. Also chapters 55, 58, 68, 69, and 83
Pray these back to God and He will answer.
Jesus in Matthew 23: 13, 15, 16, 23, 24, 27, and 29 gave us our New Testament marching orders as well.
Let us join Paul and declare anathema upon anyone” who loves not the Lord Jesus.” I Cor 16:22
Church father Martin Luther, led us by saying…”If any of the enemies of God’s people belong to God’s election, the church’s prayer against them giveth way to their conversion, and seeketh no more than that the judgment should follow them, only until they acknowledge their sin, turn, and seek God.”
During his interview with Colmes, he was asked directly about his death-dealing prayer for the president:
“Are you praying for his death?” Colmes asked.
“Yes,” Drake replied.
“So you’re praying for the death of the president of the United States?”
“Yes.”
Colmes then asks him if he is worried that the Secret Service might come knocking and Drake insists that this is his right. That is the only thing upon which I agree with Drake. As I discussed on this segment of Rachel Maddow Show, such violent speech (and prayers) are protected under the Constitution. You are allowed to make hateful prayers for the death of a president.

Crazy old white guy leading crazier old white guys. We used to call them Grand Dragons, now we call them reverends.
who quotes the psalms that make the whole world sting
who writes the psalms, who quotes the psalms
So much unchecked hatred and predjudice, its really a scarey time in our history.
It what makes it even worse is that people seem to be numb to this type of thing.
From a legal standpoint, Rev. Drake is cleverly developing a defense to potential civil liability. Less sophisticated haters such as the Ku Klux Klan directly exhort their members to violence. Rev. Drake relies upon God for that purpose, thereby breaking the chain of causation should his prayers be successful.
Quite a few Baptist preachers (and even more non-denominational protestant pastors) live in the land of cognitve dissonence – insisting he has accepted Jesus (the “Prince of Peace”) as savior while at the same time harkening back to the Old Testament to exhort God to smite his enemies. I don’t know what keeps these people’s heads from exploding…God’s grace, I guess.
If there is a God, the human race must afford Him an unending source of amusement.
The preachers are drinking spiked baptismal water. Isn’t he practicing witchcraft with “imprecatory prayer”? Well with all the “Jesus hits” he’s put on people, he’s proved prayer just doesn’t work, much like the man who challenged the Indian sorcerer to strike him dead.
Both my friend and I had written against torture and got the “religion phone call” on how torture wasn’t torture and was justified even if it was torture because the cause was just in the Lord. Religion often deals in unethical behavior by claiming the end justifies the mean. In fact, our govt. practicies this same thinking/behavior. It is scary and dangerous whenever it occurs.
The Psalmist prayed in anticipatory gratitude to God for the joy he would experience in the killing of Babylonians:
“O Daughter of Babylon, doomed to destruction,
happy is he who repays you
for what you have done to us-
he who seizes your infants
and dashes them against the rocks.” (Psalm 137)
Perhaps Rev.Drake would pray for that opportunity, too? After all, if praying for something is a good thing, then being an answer to one’s own prayer must be an orgasmically wonderful thing! Whose children would you kill to further smite President Obama, Rev. Drake? Obama’s daughters? Perhaps some of his younger African relatives? And what kind of rocks do you think it might be best dash their heads against? Or perhaps you could use the driveway to your house or the front steps, instead?
The Old Testament is a cruel tool in the hands of Christians who have summarily rejected the Jesus of Matthew 5, 6, and 25, in favor of the blood-thirsty, angry, vengeful God they find in Leviticus and elsewhere- the God who so perfectly reflects their own jealousies and anger.
You motivate me, Rev. Drake, you do..
What about “Put away your sword, Peter.”? Love one another as I have loved you.”? Where was this clown who pretends to represent The Prince of Peace when BUSH DID NOTHING TO STOP ABORTION, AND tortured those who Christ called us to love?
You know, where was he when we TORTURED? TORTURE — what we did to Christ on the cross!? Where was he when people were losing their jobs and going hungry? Where was he when babies in the wombs of mothers in Iraq were being killed by bombs and bullets?
Where were his self-righteous “imprecatory” prayers against the evil HAWK OF WAR and destruction?
Lest you forget, preacher man, many people LOVE and support President Obama and we despise ignorant hypocrites like you.
I pray the Lord keeps our president and his family safe from hateful idiots like you. You are called to see Christ in your fellow man, and you want him killed. You are despicable. We were told there would be many false prophets. I imagine there’s a special place in hell for your kind and the people who follow you.
I fear for the life of our President because this insane fringe is ginning up the rhetoric, with the “prayer” that some crazy killer will come along to do “Gods” bidding. The memories of JFK, MLK and RFK are still vivid in my mind and these pseudo Christians today are even crazier then the haters of the 60’s.
And his name is “Wiley”?
Ha. It’s stranger than fiction.
No one should ever question why I hate religion with a passion.
It is nothing but organized crime that are allowed to spew hate and for that benefit is tax exempt.
I seriously believe religion eats away rationality.
As Prof. Bloom so poetically put it, we live among those who “wrap themselves in the flag and the fetus.” While it may be protected speech, praying for the death of President Obama negates entirely all the unctuous claims of respect for human life and reveals the evil and utterly godless heart of Rev. Drake’s operation.
Encouragingly, polls among young people indicate a shrinking pool of successors for these vipers. Considering the passing of Jerry Falwell and D. James Kennedy, one needn’t have bruised the knees making supplications for their demise: the laws of nature are inexorable.

Great men give their life willingly. I’m certain he made that decision long ago.
I know I have.
Church is a place for sinners
- don’t you know?
We hope people like this and people that listen to people like this are not our planet’s future. That would be a sad, short, doomed, future. What parent would ever want their child to grow up into a person like this? Sad. Sad. Sad.
P.S. We mean the lunatic Wiley Drake if you couldn’t figure that out.
I’m not surprised by this at all. We have Rush on the radio everyday calling for something just short of this. so some people are taking it to what seems like a logical conclusion.
Maybe they should reconsider. Would they really prefer Joe Biden if their prayers work??? Nancy Pelosi if thet start wishing for Biden to die?????
“As I discussed on this segment of Rachel Maddow Show, such violent speech (and prayers) are protected under the Constitution. You are allowed to make hateful prayers for the death of a president.”
______________
And I trust that those First Amendment free speech rights are never diminished.
A quick viewing of the linked video illustrates all of the non-governmental commonsense speech control needed to effectively silence religious charlatans like ‘ol Wiley, the ORdained minister of god Almighty.
GWLSM,
I fear that with Biden or Pelosi the vitriol would find a new target. These are people who don’t like losing and really have minimal investment in a system of laws.
i think the guy should have to right ot the ten commandants like 100 times…then, read them outloud in front of a mirrow…if that doesn’t work…ah, maybe make him say those words in front of a mirrow so he can see how he looks saying it…

“So much unchecked hatred and predjudice, its really a scarey time in our history.

It’s an odd phenomenon; they see the world as changing and have become radicalized and numb to the violence that they think will put it right. On the other hand, I’m sure many folks like me saw the last election as the opportunity to choose change but don’t see it coming anywhere near being implemented and similarly start wishing people we deem as central to the maintenance of a proto-fascist state, dead by assassination as a good start toward a solution.
The normal venues no longer seem to work and ’sane’ methods appear ineffective. I recognize these impulses are not healthy in a society but historically they have been effective. (I see the MLK assassination as the exception.) This is greatly disturbing to me.
I think politics is making some of us nuts, literally.
Food for thought and a site for people that just need some rudeness on ocassion:

Jesus came to bring life, not hate. He came so that we could have life more abundantly. Jesus is the way, the truth and the life. There are SOME BUT NOT ALL “Christians” out there, even ministers who do not know the love of God. They have not experienced His Joy, His Peace, His Love, and so they say and do things that make people turn from God. Do not let the fools fool you. Jesus is love. This guy obviously is not speaking on behalf of Jesus. NO WHERE in the New Testament, does Jesus say we need to pray that people we don’t like or agree with should die. I didn’t vote for the President, I don’t like the choices he’s making, however, I’m a born again believer who prays for my President for great success and wise decisions.
Colossians 3:12-14
Stacy:
“NO WHERE in the New Testament, does Jesus say we need to pray that people we don’t like or agree with should die. I didn’t vote for the President, I don’t like the choices he’s making, however, I’m a born again believer who prays for my President for great success and wise decisions.”
***********
I applaud your sentiments, commonplace thought they may be, however I do fault your memory of the Bible. Actually Jesus had no problem with people dying including disobedient children so praying for that would not seem so extreme to a person of your faith. Here’s the passages for your Bible study:
“And he said to them: “You have a fine way of setting aside the commands of God in order to observe[c] your own traditions! For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother,’[d] and, ‘Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.’But you say that if a man says to his father or mother: ‘Whatever help you might otherwise have received from me is Corban’ (that is, a gift devoted to God), then you no longer let him do anything for his father or mother. Thus you nullify the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And you do many things like that.” Mark 7:9-13 (NIV)
“Then Jesus began to denounce the cities in which most of his miracles had been performed, because they did not repent. 21″Woe to you, Korazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! If the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. 22But I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you. 23And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted up to the skies? No, you will go down to the depths.[d] If the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Sodom, it would have remained to this day. 24But I tell you that it will be more bearable for Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.” Matthew 11:20-24 (NIV)
“Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35For I have come to turn a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her motherinlaw—36a man’s enemies will be the members of his own household.” Matthew 10:34-36 (NIV)
“That servant who knows his master’s will and does not get ready or does not do what his master wants will be beaten with many blows.” Luke 12:47 (NIV)
Tell me Stacy have you ever actually read the book, or do you just rely on others to tell you what to believe?
I would respectfully agree with JT on the constitutionality of Wiley’s right to pray to god for Obama’s demise.
However, I believe that a criminal case could be made against Wiley, based upon a charge of attempted murder.
All the elements of that crime are there:
First, it was the defendant’s purpose to cause the death
Secondly, the defendant Purposely engaged in conduct which was intended to cause the death of the victim, if the attendant circumstances were as defendant would believe them to be, or
Did or omitted to do anything with the purpose of causing the death of the victim without further conduct on (his/her) part.
It does not matter that the defendant was frustrated in accomplishing (his/her) objective because the facts were not as a reasonable person would believe them to be; it is no defense that the defendant could not succeed in reaching (his/her) goal because of circumstances unknown to the defendant.
As the Baptist minister honestly believes in God, and believes both that God answers prayers, and that God has the prerequisite capability to cause the death of another human being, and that the Minister has taken the affirmative step of invocating God to effect this murder . . .
The minister has prima facially met all elements of the crime of attempted murder, and could be arrested and charged thereon.
Boy, am I glad I’m not a Baptist anymore. What hath God wrought, indeed?
.
Q U E S T I O N:
Who did Christ pray for to be smitted?
.
GaryT:
thank God for separation of church and state.
Please answer…
At what point in the law, does freedom of speech turn into hate speech?
If all of us are so concerned about this hate speech protected by the law, then We all have the responsibility to raise our voices and strongly condemn this type of hate.
Not only here, but anytime or anywhere we are able to.
It is not enough to complain about it here, we must make our voices heard too.
Indentured Servant:
Well, we should thank providence at least, and the founding fathers at most
Diane:
“At what point in the law, does freedom of speech turn into hate speech?”
*************
You may hate to your heart’s content and say so and your speech is both hate speech and protected by the First Amendment. You may not incite to riot, defame another living person, or place others at risk to their physical safety by uttering words designed to disrupt public order: the classic yelling “Fire” in a crowded theater. Other than those modest restrictions, you are free to say the most insolent, stupid, hateful things your mind can imagine (and the most sublime, as well) and the government is powerless to render any harm to you –and democracy is the better for it.
In the unlikely event that Jesus does indeed exist, I’m betting he would be un-receptive to prayers calling down even more violence in his name.
First of all, you cannot say that this Wiley person is a minister. Everyone is a Christian, but my Bible tells me that you will know them by the fruits they bear. His ignorance of the scripture speaks for itself.
Should charge him with attempted murder.
As he believes that god is real and will carry out his prayer without fail, it’s the same as hiring a contract assassin.
Of course he’s assassin is completely inept and doesn’t exist, but he thinks the assassin is real and will carry out his will.
Put him in jail!
Actually, he can be charged and jailed, perhaps even shot for treason. Free speech ends when it comes to threatening the presidents life, even simply asking god to do it. Because we all know that there’s way too many religious wack-a-doos out there who think they are god or at least an instrument of him… It… Whatever.
See law here: http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/18/871.shtml
Well, I pray to god that Wiley Drake is hit by a bus, and then by another bus, while crossing the street. Now we’re even.
I really am glad that God`s word does not tech us to hate each other but to hate sin. I have not read anywhere in the bible where the Lord said hate them because they are Chinese, or they are black, or they have strips. I read that we are to love one another as he has loved us.He also ask the question how can you say that you love me and have not seen me, yet you hate your neighbor whom you see daily. I strongly feel that any Pastor that takes Gods pulpit to teach hate against anyone in any form is preaching his way to hell , and any of his congregation that sits and listens or practice what he preaching or teaching is setting in the same hand basket to hell. What is really sad is that every soul that he is leading down the wrong path the blood is on his hands, so his torment in hell will be ten thousand times worst. I will be praying for his harden heart and the redemption of his soul.I think that he and his congregation should be watched closely from here on. I also think that he should be forced to make a retraction statement, if the minister were black this would have been done without and option. If this man is trying to pass off what he said to comply with any part of Gods word I ask that he show the scripture. I think this man should have his minister`s license taken from him. I thank God that He is God and not man.
Jamesetta:
“I have not read anywhere in the bible where the Lord said hate them because they are Chinese, or they are black, or they have strips..”
***************
Then, my dear Jamesetta, you need to read more. Here’s a few verses to get you started:
“If a man lies with a male as with a women, both of them shall be put to death for their abominable deed; they have forfeited their lives.” (Leviticus 20:13 NAB)
“A man or a woman who acts as a medium or fortuneteller shall be put to death by stoning; they have no one but themselves to blame for their death.” (Leviticus 20:27 NAB)
“They entered into a covenant to seek the Lord, the God of their fathers, with all their heart and soul; and everyone who would not seek the Lord, the God of Israel, was to be put to death, whether small or great, whether man or woman.” (2 Chronicles 15:12-13 NAB)
“So God let them go ahead and do whatever shameful things their hearts desired. As a result, they did vile and degrading things with each other’s bodies. Instead of believing what they knew was the truth about God, they deliberately chose to believe lies. So they worshiped the things God made but not the Creator himself, who is to be praised forever. Amen. That is why God abandoned them to their shameful desires. Even the women turned against the natural way to have sex and instead indulged in sex with each other. And the men, instead of having normal sexual relationships with women, burned with lust for each other. Men did shameful things with other men and, as a result, suffered within themselves the penalty they so richly deserved. When they refused to acknowledge God, he abandoned them to their evil minds and let them do things that should never be done. Their lives became full of every kind of wickedness, sin, greed, hate, envy, murder, fighting, deception, malicious behavior, and gossip. They are backstabbers, haters of God, insolent, proud, and boastful. They are forever inventing new ways of sinning and are disobedient to their parents. They refuse to understand, break their promises, and are heartless and unforgiving. They are fully aware of God’s death penalty for those who do these things, yet they go right ahead and do them anyway. And, worse yet, they encourage others to do them, too.” (Romans 1:24-32 NLT)
“This is what the Lord of hosts has to say: ‘I will punish what Amalek did to Israel when he barred his way as he was coming up from Egypt. Go, now, attack Amalek, and deal with him and all that he has under the ban. Do not spare him, but kill men and women, children and infants, oxen and sheep, camels and asses.” (1 Samuel 15:2-3 NAB)
That should get you started. Now, tell me again why thirsting for the blood of your enemies isn’t sanctioned in the Christian Bible?
I wonder If this so called preacher, pray for the death of ex-president George Bush when he got us into the war we are in now. Did he pray for the of the CEO’s of all the big companys that gave them self raises after laying of millions of people? Or how about all the people in the banking industries when they got their bail out money went out and partied? No matter what version of the Bible is read it states to respect authority, this so-called preacher is the one who is wrong and should repent for disrespecting the office of our national leader.
what kind of minister would preach and teach hate, death, and destruction. i feel sorry for his followers, be careful who you follow. God would never teach hate. God is love.
I ran this situation by my on minister who is conservitive. His comment was this behavior has no place in christianity
