Obama Embraces Al Sharpton With Major Appearance

President Barach Obama launched his reelection bid this week with a video announcement on the Internet — which generated fewer hits than a parody by the Republicans. Now, in his first major appearance since the announcement, Obama will be appearing with Rev. Al Sharpton and speak at the annual convention of the National Action Network which Sharpton founded. Sharpton’s history of race-baiting and demagoguery has made him one of the most divisive figures in American politics. Yet, the President is about to share a podium with him. For liberals who denounced Republicans for their association with Sarah Palin, the question is whether they will be heard with equal vigor in the association with Sharpton.

The NAN website is all about Sharpton, featuring numerous pictures of Obama with Sharpton (including one in the Oval Office). The Republicans are likely to be featuring the same photographs. The website proclaims that Obama will be appearing with Sharpton. Strangely, NAN posted a press release on Obama’s decision to join Sharpton but added “***THE INFORMATION BELOW IS FOR PLANNING PURPOSES ONLY AND NOT FOR DISCLOSURE***” Notably, also joining Sharpton is “MSNBC PRESIDENT PHIL GRIFFIN,” who will be “honored” by the Reverend.

Sharpton has a long history of alleged corrupt practices , tax disputes, and federal investigations. He came to fame with his infamous role in the Tawana Brawley hoax that led to civil liability for Sharpton.

Obama, however, is willing to embrace Sharpton in anticipation of a tough reelection — another example of politics overcoming principle.

  1. He’s thrown in with the divisive fascists. That his encore is to throw in with the divisive race baiting charlatan? Ehhh, can’t say it is exactly shocking.

  2. This is an outstandingly bad judgment. By the way I don’t dislike Sharpton and he displays brilliance at times. However, he has also obviously shown himself to be
a publicity hunting charlatan and thus has earned public scorn. The other problem is I don’t think he has a much influence in the Black community as is supposed by many whites. Most black people are more politically savvy than their White peers, oppression and racism tends to increase insight. however, given some of the unfair opprobrium heaped upon Sharpton they have little choice but to not add to the cacophony of bad press.

  3. ” The other problem is I don’t think he (Sharpton) has a(s) much influence in the Black community as is supposed by many whites. Most black people are more politically savvy than their White peers, ….” (Spindell)

    Bingo!

  4. Sometimes you find yourself in a position that as I can see by the comments will put me at odds with those whom I consider to be friends, you may not believe this but IMO the Rev has more clout and respect than President Obama in the Black Community.

He has with stood the test of time, again I may be going against the grain on this one but I must stand up and call it as I see and know it to be.

    Just a little FYI:

“Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, Rev. Sharpton join forces to aid black church summits
    BY MICHAEL MCAULIFF
    DAILY NEWS WASHINGTON BUREAU
    Monday, January 17, 2011
WASHINGTON – Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand may be raising her profile, but she’s also sinking grass roots – and that will be on display soon in a new partnership with the Rev. Al Sharpton.

Gillibrand, an upstate Democrat who will be a guest at Sharpton’s House of Justice for Martin Luther King Day, was met by deep suspicion downstate – especially among Latinos and African-Americans – after then-Gov. David Paterson selected her to replace Sen. Hillary Clinton.

That suspicion is long gone, said Sharpton, who is co-chairing a push with the senator to link black churches with federal agencies and programs.

“A lot of us had never heard of her. Then we heard a lot of things that were disturbing,” Sharpton said. “But as she remained almost omnipresent, she has won a lot of people over, because she’s been there and she’s been there over and over again.”

NY1′s Erin Billups reports that the Rev. Al Sharpton delivered a fiery sermon this morning, accusing lawmakers of forgetting why they were elected, and calling on them not to impose drastic budget cuts without asking the rich to pay more in the form of taxes.

“You get elected and act like your only job is to get re-elected. (applause) As soon as you get in you’re worrying about how to get back in rather than how to do the job that people sent you up here for.”

“You cannot cut working class people and the poor and talk about you love them. You cannot spare the super rich and penalize those that are helpless and vulnerable, and act like you did what you had to do. You did what you wanted to do!”

The speech comes on the day that Governor Andrew Cuomo is expected to attend the annual Black and Puerto Rican Legislature’s Conference. Cuomo’s budget calls for cuts across the board, including $2.85 billion to Education and Medicaid. Cuomo has said he is opposed to extending an income tax on those making more than $200,000.

    Sharpton And Bloomberg Venture North
    DEC 21ST – 2:38 PM

YNN’s Tamara Lindstrom caught Mayor Bloomberg and the Rev. Al Sharpton this morning after their brief visit to the Louis Gossett Jr. Finger Lakes Residential Center in Tompkins County, after which they returned to NYC to propose an overhaul of the state’s juvenile justice system.

Bloomberg and Sharpton were full of praise for the staff at the center – the mayor went so far as to say the people working there are doing “God’s work.” But also said they’d like to see the kids incarcerated closer to home, noting most of them come from the five boroughs.

In a press release outlining his plan, the mayor called the state-run juvenile facilities “relics of a bygone era, when troubled city kids were stripped from their families and shipped to detention centers in remote rural areas.”

It would be more humane – and possibilty cut down on the recidivism rate – Bloomberg reasoned, to let NYC further develop its own juvenile justice system where kids won’t just ”

Just a few examples,Hillary Clinton when she was running for President also spoke at House Of Justice.

  5. Maybe the President’s just trying to win the support of people who made appearances on Boston Legal. You know, for the Shatner fans’ votes.

  6. Here.s the Grio Blog. Their take on the subject and their website, get their take on this and** OTHER** subjects coming from a Black perspective, please.

“PHILADELPHIA (AP) — He avoids race, so the story goes. He can’t afford to alienate white voters, black people will vote for him again anyway, so he has little to gain by approaching such a volatile subject.
Yet on Wednesday, President Barack Obama is scheduled to make a foray into racial territory by speaking in New York at the Rev. Al Sharpton’s national convention — an early step on the tricky path that Obama must navigate in order to engage black voters who are crucial to his re-election.”

  7. Gyges,
    that is hilarious!
I am not a big fan of Sharpton, but I cannot compare him to Palin. At least Sharpton knows what is going on in the country and the world. Palin has to write it down on her hand to remember. I wish Obama had not chosen Sharpton’s event as his first stop after announcing the reelection big, but I think it will be a short lived “romance”. He is definitely into his political phase again. Now, if we can just get him to tell Boehner and Ryan to take a hike on their so-called cuts, I would then care less about Sharpton.

  8. Nothing to add other than I initially read the headline as “Obama Embarrasses Al Sharpton With Major Appearance.”

  9. eniobob,

I was going to agree with you until you referenced the juror…I agree with SWM said about agreeing with you….

  10. President Barach Obama launched his reelection bid this week with a video announcement on the Internet — which generated fewer hits than a parody by the Republicans. (JT)

I posted the videos yesterday on another thread along with the hits each generated. After thinking about it for 24 hours and in Obama’s defense the reason is he sent out his video to all who supported him so there was no need for them to go to youtube to watch it. Just sayin.

  11. We knew he wasn’t going to make an appearance with minister Farakahn so I guess the reverend Sharpton was a good second choice :)

  12. Bdaman, If Georgia is in play as the polls show, I don’t think Obama has to worry about the video.

  13. you may not believe this but IMO the Rev has more clout and respect than President Obama in the Black Community.

Eniobob that’s a fact. Especially now they have seen Obama’s actions over the last two plus years. Obama had it on January 20th 2009.

  17. Weeks after President Obama took office, John Gage, the head of the largest union for federal workers in the country, gave a speech hailing the new administration as a champion for “transparency, accountability and good government.”

But in a sharply worded federal lawsuit filed last week, that same union, the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), accused the Obama administration of keeping important government records secret.

Representing more than a half-million federal workers, the union sued the White House budget office and its director, Jacob J. Lew, in U.S. District Court in Washington over what it called the office’s “unlawful” failure to respond to an expedited Freedom of Information Act request.

The union filed the information request last month because it wants the Office of Management and Budget to turn over contingency plans on how federal agencies will handle a potential government shutdown, including a list of all federal employees who will continue to report to work “to protect life and property.”

The choice may be crsytal clear one candidate may represent high gas prices, while the other may have you pushing you car.

  19. “Most black people are more politically savvy than their White peers, ”

I agree, I have been listening to more and more blacks saying they are tired of being ignored by the democratic party. They are leaving the high tax liberal north eastern states in large numbers and heading for the south.

Democrats ignore this at their peril. I for one am tired of being taken for granted. Sucking up to me once every 2 years isn’t enough for my vote anymore.

Al Sharpton is a race baiting bunghole. And is a caricature of himself.

  20. Eniobob Obama spoke today and said Americans of all types are struggling to make good. But he also said the black community faces higher unemployment than other groups. And he said the poorest in society had to sacrifice the most during the recession.

The black and minority groups have suffered the greatest. First they lost their jobs because most were in construction or some type of trade. Now with food and gas prices going up it’s the double wammy. Luckily for me growing up my father was a chef so he always brought home leftovers so we ate good. I got a feeling though that like some of my friends growing up manayse sammiches is gonna be the only thing to eat for alot of disadvantage people’s.

If a Republican wins 2012, unions may not have anyone to sue …

  22. He also said “If you’re complaining about the price of gas and you’re only getting 8 miles a gallon, you know,You might want to think about a trade-in.”

Most minorities drive the poorest cars with the worst conditions. They can’t afford to put food on the table. Probably have a terrible credit rating due to foreclosure or late pays and yet he wants them to trade up for a Chevy Volt, He picked the wrong crowd to say that. What a jerk!!!!!!!!!

  23. All Obama has to do is allow us to drill off the coast of California and the east coast and in the GOM and allow a couple of new refineries to be built and guess what? Gas prices come down about $20/barrel in about a week and start heading south as the rigs come on line and ground is broken for the refineries.

Those would be real jobs paid for by oil and gas. Help a lot of folks with jobs and lower gas prices.

  30. The betrayal of the vast majority of ordinary black women and men by both Obama, Sharpton and many other black “leaders” has been appalling. The shredding of the rule of law (Bruce Fein has just drafted articles of impeachment), the shredding of the social safety net under Obama has had a profound, disproportionate effect on black women and men. His lack of prosecution for his friends, the financial “savvy business men” who have wiped out entire black neighborhoods through mortgage fraud is stunning. The incarceration rate for black men has gone up, in part also to the gutting of the real economy by Obama’s policies. It is Obama who has stripped the right to abortion from the most vulnerable, poorest women in our society. It is a disgrace to embrace such a man for office. Racism can and is being committed by a black man. Racism committed by a black man does not make it correct or less harmful. Racism seems to have been reduced to “are you for or against Obama”. While true that some people do not like Obama because of his race, to allow this racism to end all talk of racist policies being perpetrated by Obama is absurd.

I certainly see how both men, who show no sign of a conscience, only a will to power, have come together so easily. People of conscience need to stand up to the illegal and immoral behavior on Obama’s part. I recommend the Black Agenda Report for a good understanding a much greater, deeper understanding of racism in America.

  31. ” Obama has had a profound, disproportionate effect on black women and men. 32. “you may not believe this but IMO the Rev has more clout and respect than President Obama in the Black Community.”

Actually Bdaman and Eniobob I do believe it. Sharpton happens to be a brilliant man, an excellent speaker and someone who has the pulse of the issues. I would think the black community respects him more than Obama because the Rev has had the courage to speak out, whereas Obama has rarely made statements that are politically unpopular and from my point of view hasn’t used the “bully pulpit” effectively or forcefully.

My dislike of him doing this is twofold. First, because the Rev has been so slandered by the MSM in great disproportion to his alleged sins, he has become a symbol of fear to white America. It is ridiculous that he faces such opprobrium, in the light of media darlings like Palin, Bachman, Trump etc., who don’t hold a candle to Al in intelligence, integrity or knowledge of substance. Yet the reality is that Obama will find himself villified by this action, the reaction which is understandable given the corporate MSM, to me only heightens the disingenuity of his refusal to back others (like his own Reverend) when faced with criticism.

Secondly, as brilliant as Reverend Al is he does have his venal side as does Jesse Jackson. Certainly the good that both men have done outweighs their personal failings
especially when compared to the likes of those who would villify them, while being far more corrupt. Nevertheless,
black people, being exceedingly more sophisticated politically than their white counterparts will overwhelmingly support Obama, despite his failings, because the alternative is at least disaster in the short run and most probably the long run too. Given this all Obama is doing is giving the Corporate MSM and those that control them another opportunity to engage in a feeding frenzy. Were it not for the ever present racism in many, many Americans, this political move would be seen as strengthening his base. Unfortunately, I think it will play out by giving justification to the unadmitted but ever present racism that runs through our country.

  33. Once monolithic, blacks’ support for the first African American president is still. . . . immense. But for unclear reasons it’s declined about 7% from well above 90% to 85% in March. That’s a new low since Obama’s inauguration 26 months ago.

Equally ominous for Obama in 2012, his approval among Hispanics, the nation’s fastest-growing demographic, has also fallen to again tie his term low of 54%. That’s a drop of 11 points from its early high of 65%.

  34. Oprah Winfrey reportedly does not plan to publicly support Barack Obama in the 2012 US presidential election.

Winfrey supported Obama’s campaign in 2008, holding a highly publicised political rally for him during his presidential challenge.

According to a Gallup poll conducted before the rally, Winfrey’s favourable ratings fell from 74 to 66% while her unfavourable ratings jumped from 17 to 26%.

Her TV show ratings also fell following the event.

A source has told PopEater that Winfrey doesn’t want to do anything to alienate viewers now that she has launched her OWN network.

Not all Republicans think a potential government shutdown would be good for the GOP.

  36. I don’t think there should be a government shutdown either. What I want to know is how to avoid this in the future. Could you imagine being a soldier with bullets flying at you and not getting paid?
I think in the civilian world most would say fuck it, I quit. Now if my boss said hey, money’s a little tight and I can pay you till next week, might be o.k. with me.

  37. Bdaman:

I’m looking at the Dems holding a press conference right now as to why there may be a shutdown, they got out the gate first,so we will see as the day progresses who will be wearing the **albatross** for the shutdown.

  38. Swathmore Mom he’s fixin to lose alot more than that.

Even before Gail Collins was with the New York Times, she has written nasty and derogatory articles about me. Actually, I have great respect for Ms. Collins in that she has survived so long with so little talent. Her storytelling ability and word usage (coming from me, who has written many bestsellers), is not at a very high level. More importantly, her facts are wrong!

As far as her comments on the so-called “birther” issue, I don’t need Ms. Collins’s advice. There is a very large segment of our society who believe that Barack Obama, indeed, was not born in the United States. His grandmother from Kenya stated, on tape, that he was born in Kenya and she was there to watch the birth. His family in Honolulu is fighting over which hospital in Hawaii he was born in-they just don’t know.

He has not been able to produce a “birth certificate” but merely a totally unsigned “certificate of live birth”-which is totally different and of very little significance. Unlike a birth certificate, a certificate of live birth is very easy to obtain. Equally of importance, there are no records in Hawaii that a Barack Hussein Obama was born there-no bills, no doctors names, no nurses names, no registrations, no payments, etc. As far as the two notices placed in newspapers, many things could have happened, but some feel the grandparents put an ad in order to show that he was a citizen of the U.S. with all of the benefits thereto. Everybody, after all, and especially then, wanted to be a United States citizen.

The term used by Ms. Collins-“birther”-is very derogatory and is meant in a derogatory way. Had this been George Bush or almost any other President or Presidential aspirant, they would never have been allowed to attain office, or would have been thrown out of office very quickly.

For some reason, the press protects President Obama beyond anything or anyone I have ever seen. What they don’t realize is that if he was not born in the United States, they would have uncovered the greatest “scam” in the history of our country. In other words, they would become the hottest writer since Watergate, or beyond.

Open your eyes, Gail, there’s at least a good chance that Barack Hussein Obama has made mincemeat out of our great and cherished Constitution!

Cosby was on the show to discuss education, but his segment was following Vieira’s interview with Trump about his presidential aspirations. Besides the buckets of controversy Trump has caused with his descent into birtherism, he has also been very cagey about his presidential aspirations.
