What is often missing in the political debate over the environment is the direct cost of pollution on the health and lives of Americans. While the Bush Administration was attacking environmental regulations across the board, officials rarely acknowledged that the lower standard meant more children with asthma and earlier deaths of hundreds of thousands of people. Indeed, most citizens fail to understand that pollution shortens their lives. They need to read this week’s issue of The New England Journal of Medicine.
The study found that the average drop in pollution seen across 51 metropolitan areas between 1980 and 2000 appears to have added nearly five more months to people’s lives. For example, Pittsburgh’s clearer air meant people there could expect to live nearly 10 months longer.
Long-term exposure to dirty air — specifically, the tiny specks known as fine-particulate air pollution — shortens lives and contributes to cardiovascular and lung disease.
This study reinforces earlier estimates on the health impact of smog, truck emissions, and other environmental problems. Indeed, some studies have suggested that a nonsmoker living in a polluted city has about the same risk of dying of heart disease as a former smoker.

Always try to figure out what the end result is, where will a policy lead, does it lead to a good outcome or a bad one. How do you define good and bad, personally I define it as what does it do for the individual – does it make him more free or less free. If the answer is more free then it is most probably a good thing, if less it most probably is a bad thing.
So based on that can you tell me one liberal policy that has made you more free? And I consider taxation to be another word for slavery. When you have to work 4 or 5 months to pay your taxes you are not a free man or woman and this shackle while it might not sting constrains you none the less.

Church and state? The constitution is pretty clear on that – the establishment clause. But did you know that in the early days (pre-republic) there were hundreds of different religious communities that were at odds with each other? The reason the founders wanted no state sanctioned religion was so everyone could do their own thing and the government would not be subserviant to a pope or other religious figure as England was. They did not mean no religion and the founders, while they may have been playing to the masses, were talking about God an awful lot and asking for his blessings.
If anything the seperation of church and state is to protect religious freedom not to protect the government from God.
And no I do not want a theocracy, Christiam fundamentalists are probably just as bad as Muslim ones. I have no desire to burn Catcher in The Rye or Huck Finn or censor Playboy (I dont even read the articles). And if you want to be gay that’s your business not mine.

Suffice it to say, as a general rule, EPA is not in the business of putting entrepreneurs out of business who, so far as they knew, were adhering to every federal and state regulation for years until it was determined they were in violation of the new rules.
The ‘object of the exercise’ is to bring them into compliance AND also for them to be able to continue their chosen pursuits and remain productive to the local community, if at all possible.

EPA has Regional Enforcement Divisions which employ hundreds of inspectors and assistant regional counsels to bring and settle penalty matters, but who are also capable of trying them before administrative law judges, EPA also has Criminal Divisions which work with the FBI and local US attorneys for prosecution by the Justice Department when warranted.
These actions result in large fines, abatement, clean-up costs, jail time and other remedies but do not include individual actions also taken in the private sector.
