Senate Prepares for the Sotomayor Confirmation Hearings

humorous-060_smallWith the virtual absence of any objective review of Sonia Sotomayor’s opinions or positions by members of Congress, the Senate Judiciary Committee appears to be gearing up for another confirmation process with little substantive content. As noted previously with regard to the Roberts and Alito hearings, confirmation hearings have become little more than extended photo ops for Senators.

On this occasion, it will be the Democrats trying to avoid any difficult questions for the nominee and the Republicans demanding answers. The latter demands will be a bit awkward given the lack of probing questions or substantive answers in the last two hearings for Republican nominees. The “Ginsburg rule” remains the controlling precedent where nominees are allowed to refuse to answer questions in areas where they may render decisions — leaving the discussion at a meaningless level of generality punctuated with discussions of baseball and movies.

  1. Mike, you are an ignoramious and every post you have written that I have read proves it.

  2. LOL!!! This is just more proof BUSH WAS RIGHT:

Obama argues to keep Uighers in GITMO

    May 31, 2009

Barack Obama has decided to fight the release of the 17 Chinese Uighers at Guantanamo Bay into the US, Jake Tapper reports — and he’s choosing an interesting argument to use.

While Obama has wasted no opportunity to paint Gitmo as a stain on the nation’s reputation and all but the gulag Dick Durbin called it a few years ago, the administration paints quite a different picture of it in court:

The Obama administration asked the U.S. Supreme Court Friday to reject a request for a hearing from 17 Chinese Muslims currently being held at Guantanamo Bay Naval Base, arguing they have no right to come to America despite a district judge’s orders last Fall that they immediately be brought to the U.S. and released.

Not to worry — the Obama administration says the Uighurs’ detention isn’t so bad, considering:

“petitioners are being housed under relatively unrestrictive conditions, given the status of Guantanamo Bay as a United States military base,” The Government writes, saying they are “in special communal housing with access to all areas of their camp, including an outdoor recreation space and picnic area.” They “sleep in an air-conditioned bunk house and have the use of an activity room equipped with various recreational items, including a television with VCR and DVD players, a stereo system, and sports equipment.”

  3. Mary meet gunderson and BVM. I suspect you are all going to be judged harshly in heaven for your vitriol and for your inability to understand Jesus’ beliefs.

  4. gunderson meet BVM. BVM meet gunderson. The two of you have so much in common I would think it is a match made in heaven.

“Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” (Luke 6:31, NIV)

“When they persisted in questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “Let the person among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” (John 8:7, International Standard Version)

Many Christian Fundamentalists (gunderson/bvm perhaps?) find these pronouncements of Jesus inconvenient, so they ignore them in their daily actions and political activities. That way they can support all kinds of hateful behavior and pretend to justify it under Jesus’ teachings. All they prove in the end is their total inability to understand the Gospel they preach. They are the worst kind of hypocrites and blasphemers. No doubt Jesus will judge them harshly if their view of heaven is true.

Finally gunderson, the existence of Nazi Germany was made possible by about 1,600 years of anti-Jewish rhetoric coming from Christianity, Islam did their part but not in Europe, where it was forgotten that according to The Gospels, Jesus practiced Judaism until the day he died. Read your bible. Look at history if you really want to be saved, because it isn’t going to happen with the path you are now on. To be pious, one first must understand the meaning of piety and humility.

  5. SOTOMAYER NEEDS TO WITHDRAW. SHE IS A RACIST, THE LEFT KNOWS SHE IS A RACIST, AND THE LEFT DOESN’T CARE SHE IS A RACIST.

LEFT WINGERS WOULD HAVE VOTED FOR ADOLF HITLER IF THEY THOUGHT HE WOULD FURTHER THEIR AGENDA.

  6. Fr33dom:That was funny,and on point.
I’d add that I’m sure gunderson can imagine many things that he cannot know.

And Buddah, has it down, you know telling people to go to hell and making them feel happy to be going.

  7. Mespo and Buddah,
Good work in responding to the latest far-religious rightie to try to spread their “word” on Prof. Turley’s site. These are the same people who are in favor(generally) of capital punishment and have no problem with killing thousands and maybe millions of Iraqi citizens due to a war that was intitiated on one of their fellow born again Christians lies. Buddha, you comment about conrol is right on the money. Most major religions concern themselves with the control of the congregation, including their money.

  8. BVM:

Under your logic Obama’s chauffeur is likewise culpable for war crimes since he/she was hired by the President. Wonderful world you live in. Do you see Alice and that big rabbit often?

  9. gunderson:

“She needs to disqualify herself for her racist statement(s) and anti-2nd Amendment beliefs.”

    ***********

Thank god we have the ultra-right Christian crowd to tell everyone how to think, what they should do, and when they should do it. Whatever would we do without them? Boy, things were a lot better (and simpler) in the 12th Century. I see you guys are trying to take us right back there.

  10. Very well said Buddha Is Laughing.

I’d add that I’m sure gunderson can imagine many things that he cannot know.

  11. Sotomayor is unprincipled and a fool in conspiring with the War Criminal Obama. Obama is an unindicted U.S. criminal in many crimes. Sotomayor and Obama are traitors to the American people.

  12. So, does this version of the Christian God tell you these things directly or does the message come via a guy in a nice suit playing a bunch of rubes?

Strange thing about it is simply this: a world dominated by the Christian God, or any god for that matter, looks a lot like Nazi Germany. Theocracy doesn’t work for the same reasons fascism doesn’t work. Both require intolerance and repression, both of which can only be applied so long before an explosion happens. There is a reason our Founding Fathers created free exercise and prohibited endorsement and it was to prevent some of the stupid things that they had seen done in Europe in the name of state endorsed religions.

Your right to your god ends with the insistence you also have the right to force that belief on others. That’s a lesson both Christians and Muslims need to learn. If your true concern is ethical behavior, the topic can be addressed without resorting to appeals and threats from the Sky God. But historically, whenever someone wants to bring their God into it, it’s not about right, it’s about control.

  13. Anonymously Yours,

Look at you, you can’t even make a clean determination of what is right or wrong regardless of there being a God or not.

I can imagine what the world would have looked like had there never been the Christian God guiding us……it would have looked a lot like Nazi Germany.

  14. gunderson,

I am not Pro Choice or Pro Abortion. I am for Individual Personal Choices. It is not my right to play G-d with anyone. I guess you know better because your deity told you so.

  15. Of course, now that it is apparent Sotomayor is anti-abortion, maybe the lives of millions of unborn are more important than her being a racist gun banning reversed-on-appeal know nothing.

  16. She needs to disqualify herself for her racist statement(s) and anti-2nd Amendment beliefs.

  17. The Dallas Morning News was silent about her standing on abortion. It did indicate that she is a Catholic and this will just add one more to the numbers that they have on the court. I think it stands at 5.
