Chavez Shuts Down 34 “Bourgeoisie” Radio Stations

200px-Hugo_Chavez_in_Brazil-1861250px-The_PVRVenezuelan President Hugo Chavez continues his authoritarian crackdown in Venezuela with the closure of 34 radio stations for alleged violations of government regulations. Despite the reluctance of some liberals to denounce an obvious dictator in the making, Chavez continues to consolidate power and punish critics — particularly in attacks on the free press.

Media groups have denounced the move by the government as an obvious crackdown on critics of the Chavez, who has previously threatened to shutdown television, radio, and print operations that do not adhere to government dictates.

Chavez offered a curious defense: “We haven’t closed any radio stations, we’ve applied the law. We’ve recovered a bunch of stations that were outside the law, that now belong to the people and not the bourgeoisie.”

For the next attack on the free press, Chavez may find this clip of “You, Me and the Bourgeoisie” to show the other side of the issue:

  1. Told off by whom?

My family is in the Radio business – AM/FM and FCC licensed rock n’roll Radio stations, numb nuts…

We are NOT in the ‘telecommunications’ business! The term wasn’t even in use when we started.

  2. Left wing, or right wing has never been the issue when it comes to freedom and a just society. Political philosophy’s are only as good as those governing, despite what they profess. Economic systems represent the same mind trap and are merely used for the justification of those with power to oppress those without power. As long as we humans continue to organize ourselves in hierarchies, where the odds favor sociopaths rising to the top of the heap, oppression will continue. Chavez said some true things and evinced splendid aims for the “people” of his country. Venezuela was for many years a wholly owned subsidiary of Standard Oil and the Rockefeller’s. The problem is that while that may no longer be true the people there are being just as ill-served by their latest “savior.”

  3. Patty C aka numb nuts,

Looks like you have been told off. However you are too insecure in your being to see it.

So what do you really do for a living? Suck live mountan oysters dry? Nah, some thing a bull won’t let you do.

  4. telecommunications – the networks that support or the act of communication across a distance through telephone, cable and radio signals.

  5. My family is indeed in the radio business and has been for decasdes, numb nuts.

BTW, telecommunications pertains to ‘telephone’ companies…
    ;p

  6. Patty C,

If you only knew what I know, mespo, about certain radio towers. signals. and ‘mariachis’… 😉

I am, even now, forming my investment group to open up “aristocratic” radio stations all over the world. I plan to fly to Caracas today to enlist Presidente Hugo into my syndicate. We’ll play Mariachi music which I believe to be the “king” of the airways.

  8. And in this corner…

“The scope — and dangers — of GE’s control of NBC and MSNBC

I want to return to the subject of GE’s silencing of Keith Olbermann both because there are new facts I’ve obtained that shed light on what happened here and because this is one of the most blatant examples yet of pernicious corporate control over America’s journalism. The most striking aspect of this episode is that GE isn’t even bothering any longer to deny the fact that they exert control over MSNBC’s journalism. They’ve brazenly dispensed with the long-held fiction of the sanctity of journalistic independence from interference by the corporate parents that own America’s largest news organizations.

Instead, GE is now openly and proudly boasting of their editorial control over the news organizations they own, and publicly rubbing it in the faces of NBC News journalists that they’re subservient to GE’s corporate agenda. Look at this smug, creepy quote from GE executive spokesman Gary Sheffer explaining in The New York Times why GE issued its gag order preventing Olbermann from criticizing Fox and O’Reilly, all but mocking NBC and MSNBC journalists as nothing more than GE’s office of corporate spokespeople:”

Xenu, you’re the greatest dictator but watch the competition!

AY, are you purposely trying to be annoying with your never ending misspellings and grammatical errors or are you just illiterate?
    (eeeeee-lit-or-it)

I’ve said it before, but I seriously doubt you ever graduated high school much less college or law school!

The exclamation is spelled ‘Oops’, numb nuts… NOT opps which in shorthand means ‘opposite’.

Why can’t we still count on having intelligent, educated, well-spoken, regular posters here – as we did in the early days?

I think there should be a ‘Corrections’ page forthe newbies
which is needed and would be appreciated much moreso than the one directed toward JT!

I have asked you nicely to never comment on anything I say and I would respect the same. Since you cannot comprehend a simple request I must respond in kind.

I don’t doubt for a minute in your mind, or lack thereof, that you think that what you say is cute, comical and/or brilliant. What you are lacking in basic intelligence you try and make up in rudeness, which is not classy in any respect. I realize that this is the best that you as a freak from the circus can do.

Apparently, you must have not read your posting “too well” as you could have can you see the glaring mistakes that you made? I too must be a fool to respond to your stupidity and foolishness.

The professor makes mistakes in spelling, so does mespo and so do you. You must really feel challenged to have to respond to others peoples typing errors. I bet you were an English teacher for at least 20 years before you went to med school while you were general counsel for some insurance company that ripped people off unmercifully. So I take it you are in your 70’s and if you were a child genius, which I seriously doubt, you would probably be in your 60’s which means that you are still a hateful old hag that lives by the sea, If you really do?

  12. Your web site’s next Turley! End communication and adios!

  13. Sharing a thousand miles of border with a country at civil war for the past 40 years, Venezuelans have come to love Chavez, haven’t they?

Here, I hate that I rarely get my PBS channel in the evening, yet, so very close on the dial, the christians come in crystal Clear.

  14. While I admittedly found his insults of W highly amusing, the guys is pretty much a douche.

  15. The presidency of Mr. Chavez will ultimately end in failure, if not chaos. As we were able to observe during the prior administration in this country, megalomania and leadership are not synonymous terms.

  16. Opps forgot this:

“Earlier this year, Chavez had seized sea ports and air strips in at least four states in the country, which are governed by politicians known to oppose Chavez, an action criticised by opponents, who claim Chavez is working to silence his opponents.”

Did Dick Cheney assume leadership of this country as well? Four Dead in Ohio, how many more?

  17. Hummmmm. if you disagree with the Republican Party did they limit your ability to gain access to the Whitehouse? Did the FCC investigate for Violations of its license? Did you get an Audit by the IRS? Did Dan Rathers get fired?

I think that at least Chavez is being more upfront and honest. At least you know where you stand. I still don’t like it, but you can chose to make a choice.
